Jeff, quick hello before doing some gardening on this lovely Spring day.

Hi Outies. Only here a short time today. On time, for a change.
  9:06am John from Florham park:

@Doctorjazz are you working
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Stanley:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am doctorjazz:

Today is actually a strange combination; my anniversary, and my mother in law's unveiling. (Officially placing the stone on her grave...it's usually about a year after they pass, though some do it differently). Plus, all the other stuff going on...
Avatar 9:14am Brian in UK:

Been given a 90s vintage Panasonic (other makes are no longer available) tape walkman or whatever they called it. I can dig out those tapes that need to be heard. Bunny Wailer here I come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Jeff Golick:

That's a lot to take in @doctorjazz! Congratulations on the anniversary! What number is it, is it the vinyl anniversary?
Avatar 9:15am Sem:

Hello and good morning, Jeff the G, and greets D.O-ers gone to ground during this time of uncetainity, and all.

Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Aw yeah, it's @DJpeterDE and @Uncle Michael!
  9:23am DJpeterDE:

Hey Jeff: Tuesday is the birthday of Kalapurusha Maurice McIntyre, who I know little about and so didn’t include him in my own (remotely produced) show for this Tuesday. By any chance can you explore his catalog sometime on this show? Would also welcome tips from everyone. PS I confess I had him humbled with Makanda Ken McIntyre, who I know much better, in my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am doctorjazz:

www.newyorker.com...

Found this New Yorker remembrance (you may have as well )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @DJpeterDE: sure I can try to do that, though maybe you could do the same for Makanda Ken M., as I am mostly ignorant of his work!
  9:29am DJpeterDE:

It’s a deal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

@DJPeterDE
Watch this documentary on Kalaparusha: vimeo.com...

It's not easy to watch, and it covers a period late in his life during difficult times. But essential knowledge to gain.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Doug Schulkind:

No yoga class today, but my beloved wife and daughter are forcing me to do yoga with them at home to a YouTube thing. I am powerless. Will have D:O on the background.
  9:34am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Doctor and Doug! (Officially proposing a 70s sitcom: “Doug and the Doctor”)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am WR:

Hello D:O denizens. Was listening from the start as I was rushing back from grocery (still no TP) and now I am late to work (IT is extra busy due to all the alternatives needed for work from home and other alternative worker support). Be seeing you. Thank you for the curated sounds Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

One's a hard-bitten dj of the old school, from the mean streets, one's an uptown doc to the stars. Together, they are "Doug and the Doctor."

They solve crimes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

  9:36am John from Florham park:

@Doug hope you make it out alive:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

I once had an office job that offered yoga in the basement gym, which is what it takes to get me to yoga (same building I'm already in). The teacher once admonished us: "It's called Warrior Post, not Schlumpy Pose."

You can guess what my adopted yoga position is now.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jeff Golick:

Hello there, @JtotheK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am WR:

Doug, regarding Kalaparusha, will have to watch that. I was very moved when he showed up at Vision Festival the year they honored Kidd Jordan. And of course big fan of all his work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Dave in Vermont:

Doug, my daughter is teaching yoga to far flung family via fakebook. And the studio she goes to is offering donation-based classes via zoom/insta which they post on youtube later.
  9:40am DJpeterDE:

@jeff exactly what I had in mind
  9:43am DJpeterDE:

Really into “Satoru” this is my jam

Dollar Brand! Took my wife to see him at the old Sweet Basils on our 1st date (she should have realized what she was getting into then...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Dave in Vermont
Really surprised our exalted yoga teacher here hasn't created a virtual practice yet. I find it comforting, actually.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Jeff Golick:

Wife Kate made chicken soup last night, for which I am eternally grateful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Tyshawn Sorey dropped this album, "Unfiltered," with zero fanfare a few weeks back, then played a sold-out run at the Jazz Gallery. Pulled a Beyonce, basically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Uncle Michael:

Peach. Colorado peaches prepped and frozen last season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am doctorjazz:

Great Tyner! (he set the tone for Trane's version as well). Takes it a bit further.
Swag For Life Member 10:45am zzz:

i’ve been in and out this morning so apologies if already brought up, but the mention of south african jazz and now mccoy makes me think of Nduduzo Makhathini, only heard a little bit from him but had very tyner/spiritual vibes,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am doctorjazz:

It was there when I lived in the Slope in the 80s.
Avatar 10:45am fred:

Instants Chavirés is in Montreuil, next to Paris. I think I was at that L'étau show

Hey Jeff, greetings from Corvallis, Oregon
Swag For Life Member 10:48am zzz:

@uncle michael, sounds terrible :( already a very weird vibe these days i find at grocery stores to begin with

Hello and welcome, @Yennifer and @zzz! I don't know Makhathini's work, I don't think, @zzz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

@fred: very cool. Amazing band. Does "Instans Chavirés" translate into anything in English?
Swag For Life Member 10:54am zzz:

check him out, i think he just had a record come out on blue note. i want to explore his stuff more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Weird doing downward facing dog, with a dog facing me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Will do, @zzz. Thanks for the rec.

@Doug: you will never outdo a dog at downward facing dog.

Avatar 10:59am Wolfgang von Stork:

This Ducret piece just left orbit. Wowzer.
Avatar 10:59am fred:

@Jeff: Sophie Agnel has a record called "Capsizing moments" that was recorded there, so I guess that would be the official translation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

Wow! Behold the power of radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Great to be here with all the WFMU gang. I think i might actually lose my mind if WFMU weren't here these days. Thanks for keeping it going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Jeff Golick:

@Dean! Keeping it real.
  11:02am DJpeterDE:

Interesting that Berne with Ducret sounds so different from Ducret with Berne
  11:03am John from Florham park:

@Granny morning would be losing my sanity too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @DJpeterDE; I find this version a little easier to grab ahold of.
  11:04am DJpeterDE:

Well until now
  11:05am Listener Gregory:

Ducret joined Berne's Snakeoil on their recent album, to good effect (IMHO).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am doctorjazz:

Found a great vinyl version a few weeks ago (at the Downtown Record Gallery, my 1st time there), Duck Baker, Spinning Song (the music of Herbie Nichols). Pretty red vinyl, beautiful sound, great playing! Recommended highly (even digitally)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

We are here for we, Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am doctorjazz:

The Ducret track was great!
  11:06am Dean:

Picked up that Baker Nichols record on CD at Down Home about a year ago. Down Home is shuttered these days, only temporarily, I hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

I'm feeling it Doug. Glad to see you here, JfFp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am doctorjazz:

  11:07am John from Florham park:

@Doug and the ye rest of the chatters thanks
  11:08am Dean:

Oh, nice! Couldn't remember if I'd already mentioned it here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

Toilet paper has been delivered. It's a modern miracle. I love my radio neighbors!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

@doc/@Dean: I need to find that one!
@doc: did you get out of DMG with only one item? If so, well done.
  11:10am Dean:

Take that, Amazon!

I emailed Jeff G. and Doug last night with this link to an interview conducted by a friend of mine with an Ethiopian filmmaker. Might be of interest to all: https://www.steveelkins.net/Interviews/Steve-Elkins-Interviews-Miguel-Llans%C3%B3/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

I knew Duck Baker as a ragtime/blues guitarist, though I read his reviews (think it was Jazz Times) of "out" jazz, so knew his interests had expanded.
  11:11am Dean:

I have a Duck Baker Christmas record, no kidding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am doctorjazz:

Jeff, you kidding? They have a large Tzadik section, picked up stuff from it. Managed to page down the pile, though, coulda been worse.
Avatar 11:13am Hams:

i've always liked the ending of that van number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am doctorjazz:

Avatar 11:31am Brian in UK:

After a TP shortage I would guess that is so.
  11:31am Dean:

man, i am really glad to have the WFMU streams still going while stuck at home. between you guys and the people still soldiering on at WHRB at Harvard (which is what i tend to tune to on my old KLH radio in the kitchen, especially now with all the other college stations off the air), i at least have good music to listen to. thanks for that.
  11:44am Listener Gregory:

I bought a used LP version of this album a couple of months ago. It came out before I was aware of McCoy and buying his records.
  11:45am John from Florham park:

Hey fellow drummers take it from me granny has good post cards
  11:46am rw:

Hey JG! Been drifting in and out for most of the show waking up slowly. Apologies for the lack of attentiveness, but the show has been perfect for drifting in and out. Thanks as always for doing this thing!

Bye for now, stream daddy-o!
Avatar 11:50am hyde:

@John the WHRB thing I do understand. their setup makes it sensible to just have one person go in and DJ pretty safely, and I think they made the decision that it was important to keep their regular programming going for the community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Jeff Golick:

Remember back when I got on my high horse to berate the dj that talked over Coltrane & Co.? Well, I'm about to dismount and do the same over this Tyner jam, I am sorry to say.
  11:52am John from Florham park:

@Hyde also KEXP out of UW is still going pretty strong

Jeff, talking over recorded music is different from talking over John Coltrane while he's playing live. I think you're allowed.

@Jeff, I think that dj was in the same situation as you: His show was coming to an end, and Coltrane Would Not Stop.
