And the many prizes and premiums. I realize what a monumental task it will be packing and sending them out. Paralleling the broadcast and streaming, the content may be not cost WFMU anything, the distribution still has significant cost.

PLEDGE HERE: pledge.wfmu.org...
Swag For Life Member 10:26am zzz:

this may be a little too ‘behind the scenes’, so fee free to now answer but just curious- someone at the station procures the albums/etc from labels, and do the DJs then pick what they want to offer or are they given a bunch and those are what they work with?
Avatar 10:28am DJpeterDE:

Good morning everybody -- I've been listening/lurking but haven't had hands free to offer greetings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Leonardo:

Been listening/lurking too but must jump in to say how happy I am to be part of the WFMU scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

@zzz
All the DJs submit to the WFMU music director a wish list of things they would like to give away as a marathon prize. The music director then reaches out to labels and artists asking for donations. Whatever she is able to procure is then apportioned to all the DJs based on what they originally requested. Additionally, there is a vast trove of great CDs, books, DVDs and other items that we still have leftover from previous marathons. DJs can supplement their prize lists with items from that trove.
Avatar 10:31am DJpeterDE:

@L Gregory, i've never seen any info on who/what Hattie Wall is/was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

LG, tried Google search, no luck on Hattie Wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Thanks so much, Leonardo, and WELCOME! We are so happy to have you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

No one ever tells DJs here what to do, what to play, what prize to give away, etc.
  10:33am Listener Gregory:

She was probably Hamiet Bluiett's next door neighbor while growing up, or something. Whoever she was, she is immortalized now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, DJpeterDE and Leonardo!
Avatar 10:34am fred:

@Doug: no dress code either I guess?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Clothing optional, as you would expect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am doctorjazz:

Is Hoof and Mouth still on?
Avatar 10:35am DJpeterDE:

@LG, @doc, I too tried Google and hoped that typing "Hattie Wal" would autocomplete but no luck. (It did autocomplete, to "Hattie Walker," but that doesn't seem significant)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Hoof & Mouth has, out of an abundance of caution, been cancelled.
Swag For Life Member 10:37am zzz:

very cool, thanks for the info! asked bc have been hearing the carl stone a bit and digging it. prizes have been awesome this year and turned me on to so much new great stuff- love hearing so much blue gene tyranny and also that dictaphone album rules
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Every marathon, there are always a few prizes that you hear a bunch. That is in part because the music is phenomenal, and in part because the artist or record label was extremely generous and gave the station multiple copies.
  10:41am Listener Gregory:

That Daniel Carter was exceptional.
Avatar 10:43am fred:

@Doug: I guess this year's marathon graphic makes that clear. I wonder whether that choice might explain the station being far behind the goal, or what exactly the target demo was for that
Avatar 10:47am DJpeterDE:

@Doug dropping knowledge! We are indeed the Blue Hens! (which sounds weird but it references the revolutionary war regiment from Delaware)
Avatar 10:49am fred:

In my case, if I have to dance, it's probably for the best if nobody's watching
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am WR:

The premium cover shows dancers at social distancing appropriate distance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
You are a lover of and surely a practitioner of fine dancing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

@WR: those dancers captured by the wonderful photographer Roy DeCarava.
Avatar 10:54am fred:

@Doug: lover, yes, but practitioner, definitely not
Avatar 10:54am DJpeterDE:

@WR well done sir! Social D(ist)ANCE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

We're at 60% of the goal. A pledge of $95 will get us to $1000, then on we march from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am doctorjazz:

Sorry to hear there's no Good and Mouth. Got notices from some NY clubs that they're closed. I see Downtown Music Gallery closed a show thru had this Tuesday, but still lists the Sunday night gigs (finally got there last Sunday night, saw Kurt Gottschaulk with his group).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 11:06am fred:

I'm so sad Jeff's Coltrane kazoo tribute won't happen this year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am WR:

Regarding Hattie Wall title, could not find anything regarding the title but did find this quote from Bluiett: Bluiett feels that he brings a unique, and much needed, melodic sense into the WSQ. “Tunes like ‘Hattie Wall,’ ” he explains, “I wrote those tunes to have something that we could come out and play, that people could catch and go home with, as opposed to some of the other stuff that’s written. I love it, but when you get through it, nobody can remember a note ’cause it’s not melody-oriented. That’s what makes music. Like ‘’Round Midnight’ [he sings the first two bars] – you know it’s a melody, right? The chords are one thing, but you gotta have some melodic entity.

Thanks, @WR. As you probably know, Bluiett was ejected from the band, which I thought was too bad. But getting four people to work and travel together requires that they're all on the same page, I guess.
