Avatar 10:22pm JakeGould:

What personally worries me is that despite living in a neighborhood with lots of laundromats, many are closed. And I strongly believe it is because of anti-Chinese sentiments. I mean, two take out places that are mainly doing delivery have closed as well. Very depressing that when crisis hits, racism scares harder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Daniel Blumin:

Wuthry, this show is all about rambling! You were just actively participating!

@JG: Having never experienced a laundromat owned my Chinese immigrants, I really thought that was a kind of Mad Magazine trope from the mid 20th century.

@βrian: Well, I lived in Madison, WI and all the laundries there were mainly non-Chinese. I don’t recall ever seeing one with Chinese owners. And the place I lived in in W. Main and another on S. Hancock had laundry in the building. Sio never had to deal with going outside for that there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Uncle Michael:

Does Bandcamp have toilet paper?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm ParUbi:

@Franco-- And beans were apparently a big thing

For those who care, workers in the Bryant Park Whole Foods and the one at Columbus Circle have tested positive for Coronavirus. What fun!
Avatar 10:36pm TDK60:

Some of the smaller bodegas/groceries have food, yet usually pricier than bigger supermarkets.
Avatar 10:36pm βrian:

If you're out of TP, do you want spaghetti or lasagna as your backup?
Avatar 10:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Got a shovel full of beans today!

trader joe's had a reasonable line this morning. i brought a book and only read 1/2 a page. woman in front of me was friendly and patient and not panicking. we smiled at each-other passing once within, like "yes, we'll get through this won't we"
they were only out of toilet paper and baking supplies.
  10:37pm CC:

even here in North Texas we???'re finding toilet paper really rough to find
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm ParUbi:

@Kat-- Nice! I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the code!
Avatar 10:37pm JakeGould:

@TDK60: Maybe that’s the case, but a lot of the small corner shops I have checked are very well stocked and the markup is not that much. I mean if this only goes on for a few months then whatever… Just buy food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Rory:

I think for things like TP and paper towels, just order a box online. They can’t really damage it in shipping, right?
Avatar 10:40pm TDK60:

Hell yeh, glad the small food groceries are running.

I will chop up all the old thrift store shirts that no longer fit if we run out of toilet paper.

The Uline industrial supply catalog's toilet paper was out until next month. They did have facial tissue, which might do in a pinch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Kat in Chicago:

I live alone so the toilet paper lasts awhile. Found out today that someone working in my office building tested positive. Not a coworker and I haven't been there for a week but I am practicing Extreme Stay The F*ck Home unless I absolutely positively have to be face to face with a human. I'm good on food, beer and laundry quarters for a couple of weeks, will just take walks if the weather ever improves.

I'd keep it for at least four days in a hot place before using it!!! you never know how long this new fancy virus can survive on something!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Pro tip, if you must use ripped-up T-shirts for toilet paper, bear in mind that it'll cause major clog-ups that someone is going to have to fix.

Froggy love back atcha, Wendy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Daniel Blumin:

Kat, this sounds like the sensible thing to do, especially since the beer situation is copacetic! And this show was practically made for invoicing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Handy Haversack:

I think burn parties for non TP!

We ... are going to need another liquor run. For safety!
Avatar 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 10:46pm JakeGould:

@Kat: The same goes for cutting boards and bacteria. The reality is people thing plastic cutting boards are better because they claim to be “anti-bacterial” but the reality is bacteria just collects on top of it. So it is technically correct; the plastic board is never toxic… Just wash it.

With wooden cutting boards the bacteria soaks into the wood, suffocates and dies as the board dries out.

Pro-tip from me!

I will say that back on February 14th. And on February 15th I had the worst fever ever: 103.5F all afternoon to evening. Sore throat and headaches. No mucus at all. Just sickness. And I was volunteering a week before and such stuffing envelopes…

So who knows… Maybe I was hip and got this stuff before everyone else got it!
Avatar 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

i got in the habit of cutting almost everything in my hands years ago, as a result of living in situations of no clean surfaces in the kitchen. and if i have to cut something like a winter squash or a watermelon i do it on a plate and just stop a millimeter or 2 before the knife touches the plate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Kat in Chicago:

That sounds nasty, Jake. The dry cough seems to be the classic symptom, did you have that? @coel that concerns me, seems like a good way to cut your hand :(

Boiling water is the best defense. I pour it on everything when I do the dishes. Every cutting board gets nuked with soap and a boil.

Avatar 11:00pm JakeGould:

FWIW, the thing with that 103.5F fever is it was lower — like 101F — but the way I fight stuff like that is a hot bath. Usually that helps raise body temp which helps your body fight back. And then the temp goes down in a few hours. That Saturday the temperature went up and stayed up. Crazy!
Avatar 11:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Sure it does, but I just sharpen it. I've got nothing else to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Kat in Chicago:

That is a scary high temp, Jake. Glad you got through it.
Avatar 11:02pm coelacanth∅:

Kat @10.58 same here. i use little soap but nearly boiling water. no sponges, which are disgusting, but a brush, which is easy to keep clean and keeps my hands somewhat out of the nearly boiling water.

@Scott: Meant to e-mail today, but what Ken said! Ready to lend my meager skill set to any tasks that can be done from without.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Fox:

This is a strange time for me, as the world is suddenly thrown into what is basically my life circumstance.

If anyone wants some help dealing with: Health anxiety, food instability, no idea where money will come from or the future will lead us, uncomfortably reliant on government assistance, being agoraphobic and stir crazy at the same time, facing weeks of solitude, no control over life circumstances, fear of eviction with no money for housing alternatives, being very aware of how little stability actually exists in the world...

Well, that's pretty much where I live.

So.... seriously, if anyone needs someone to talk to via email or chat or even the (gasp!) phone, please feel free to reach out to me.

I am lousy with coping mechanisms!

Avatar 11:29pm JakeGould:

FWIW, some very basic advice for anyone who is going outdoors in NYC: Some neighborhoods are so desolate it really feels like NYC in the 1980s and not in a good way. I’ve encountered a few extremely aggro hobos on the subway this past week. And I was in SoHo tonight and saw small groups of people slowly checking doorknobs on closed boutiques.

Take care of yourself from a personal safety point of view on top of everything else.

Remote working and half empty restaurants aside, it’s eerily normal in the Tokyo area so far. Very few tests compared to elsewhere. Maybe because of the olympics, the authorities are not taking the steps they should be taking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Handy Haversack:

Fun story: I tried checking out at Bandcamp, and then the bank freaked out because I think Bandcamp processes each transaction serially, so it cut off my card with half the cart bought. So I call the number and talk the nice person at the other end through restoring my access to money. And while doing so the dog unplugs the computer with a pillow, so the cart in the private window is unrecoverable.

It's cool. Just one more tiny spine ratchet. All cool.

He's still a pretty good dog.
