This week: WFMU station manager Ken Freedman

To discuss:

Clearview AI, the controversial facial-recognition company partnering with police, says its entire customer list was stolen in a breach (Business Insider, Feb 26)

Before Clearview Became a Police Tool, It Was a Secret Plaything of the Rich (NYT, March 5)

Google tracked his bike ride past a burglarized home. That made him a suspect. (NBC News, March 7): "the notice had been prompted by a 'geofence warrant,' a police surveillance tool that casts a virtual dragnet over crime scenes, sweeping up Google location data — drawn from users’ GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular connections — from everyone nearby."

Jealous Corona, a song from the Ministry of Health in Vietnam

Hello Mark! Techtonefactors!

LET'S SEE KEN'S TUSH EVERYBODY
  6:02pm John from Florham park:

hello fellow technoids
@Ruth oh hell no
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Handy Haversack:

Hi, Mark -- and Ken! And all the Techyon Particles.

The Tech Gin is poured. Just needs ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Howard Beale:

We definitely need streaming video for this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm chresti:

Hi Mark and techtonites!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm brycepunk1:

Hooray for Techtonic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I am going to self-quarantine in my Techtogesic dome for this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Mr. Pumpy:

Mark drew the short straw!

Hi Mark and Ken!

Hi Mark & Ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Mr. Pumpy:

heh heh
Avatar 6:06pm JakeGould:

@ruthgordon: No! Not without sanitizer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU makes great toilet paper!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm chresti:

And most of us has pledged multiple times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Handy Haversack:

Kate specifically told me not to give all our money to WFMU ... but she's out facilitating a people's theater group, so I've been left in charge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Ignatatus666:

Good morning Ken and Mark
2 items
1: Saturday NY Post cover
Rich person using FR to follow daughters date and she is an adult
My phone listening to me as I explain to one of my customers the text tone she uses is the sound of spitting into a spittoon, she of course didn’t know what a spittoon is. 3 days later it was installed in my phone with all notifications turned to off. It took a few days to find Apple installed it into FB messenger even with sounds turned off on both ends
  6:10pm melinda:

For real? Mainstream media really does suck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Folsom:

Since Ken is on the show maybe he can tell us about the trackers on radiorethink, the pop up player.
  6:13pm melinda:

Georgy Girl has great shows on Sheena’s Jungle Room.
  6:13pm Dave Miss:

Hello Marc and Ken. Made a pledge for Irwin’s show with Mark but unfortunately it showed up on 7 Second delay. Oh well. At least I got to hear Andy mad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm HOWARD BEALE:

I WANT YOU TO GET UP RIGHT NOW AND PLEDGE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm ultradamno:

Look at the bracelet of silence. LOOK AT IT. It wouldn't be more of absurd if it were in the movie Brazil. www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy...her statement can be interpreted many ways. Pull the trigger! Ha! I've added on to my SFL a few times in the past week or so, but I have to be realistic this year. I got docked about $2 Gs taking days off to take care of my dad, so I am more strapped than ever. It pains me, as I want to pledge more!
Avatar 6:16pm JakeGould:

FWIW, the fact that the new version of the app doesn’t automatically start playing when the app is launched is great. It annoyed me personal for years and I can imagine it helps save on bandwidth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm chresti:

It's steam punk, it looks heavy@ultra
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Handy Haversack:

I hear you, @Mr. P. We all do what we can with joy.

I *still* think I can figure out a way to let the dog eat music, though, and save some cash on his wildly fancy dog food ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm ultradamno:

Def 'chunky' accessory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Rand al'Thor:

Hello, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy...that would be some alchemy right there! And yes...we do. I don't mean to get too personal, but it helped to say it out loud. Fuck it...it's only money. The old man would make it right, but I'm not going to do that to him. I'm still standing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm chresti:

It looks like something that would get confiscated at the airport
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm HOWARD BEALE:

The white noise the bracelet produces rivals some of my favorite drones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy, there are so many avenues to go down. Perhaps the pup can chew on fat riffs, chunky guitar tones, tasty slabs...ah hell, you have some work to do. MAYBE...maybe it is in the song title. Don't try anything with chocolate in the title while beta testing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm chresti:

Growth and data
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Handy Haversack:

What SMK said -- I feel the exact same way. If it ain't getting talked about here, I don't care to hear about it.

Hells yeah, @Mr. P! And if any monopolistic bullies try to hassle *you*, you tell 'em Handy's coming for 'em!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm ultradamno:

This article has it projecting blue rays, which is frightening www.techgenyz.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm HOWARD BEALE:

Wait, is Brave a better (more private) browser than Tor?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Handy Haversack:

Brave is better than Firefox? Good thing I have a certain DJ Premium coming to explain why!
  6:23pm listener C:

Does WFMU support tips via the Brave browser tipping system?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Mr. Pumpy:

Ha! @Handy. Okay...heading to pops. Maybe I'll see ya'll later. Peace and love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Rand al'Thor:

Brave over Firefox, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Rob (Jerzcity):

re: that chunky bracelet...for my senior elec engineering technology project I used those modules (ultrasonic) to make a bicycle safety device. That was pretty ugly but it was mounted to a bicycle, not a wrist!
Avatar 6:28pm JakeGould:

We definitely live in the future. I mean a center of of the Coronavirus outbreak is a cruise ship named “Diamond Princess.” I mean that is some J.G. Ballard stuff right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Bas NL:

Ooww... I'm late! Hi Mark, Ken, all!
  6:31pm melinda:

FMU is a safe haven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm ultradamno:

...or maybe closer than Ballard, his buddy Martin Bax's Hospital Ship sciencefictionruminations.com...
  6:32pm Nacho:

I’m pretty sure you already know this song, or played it before, anyway, “NSA Blues” from Natural Child should be an anthem for this show. Good luck guys! Buena suerte!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm chinchilla:

Perhaps it would be appropriate to mention one of my favorite things about WFMU, that you've been ahead of the front on streaming tech and web availability of the archives? I remember when RealAudio was still relevant, and I'd wager FMU was ahead of THAT curve! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm chinchilla:

Thanks Mark and Ken for being bastions of media tech in such a valuable sense in 2020!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm JeremyB:

Go Mark! Go Ken! Get that money!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm listener 126464:

I have a lightphone
  6:36pm PJ:

@listener126464: How do you like the phone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm listener 126464:

love it
  6:39pm Tony:

I am not sure of the point of the light phone. It seems like if you want a phone that only makes calls and texts, you might as well just get a pre-smartphone flip-phone or something like that. But I do like that on the demo on their website, the phone has Alice Coltrane in the music library!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Webhamster Henry:

@chinchilla WFMY streamed and archived using RealAudio for a long time! We used to beam a signal up to a satellite and down to Texas where it would be streamed by Audionet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Webhamster Henry:

No WFMU app on The Light Phone. 8^(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm listener 126464:

Nope
Avatar 6:42pm dale:

tony - it's a pricey designer dumb phone for millenials who wouldn't be caught dead with a flip phone.
  6:45pm bridgettendaisy:

I I think the reason the show lifts us up while being grim is that it really celebrates our humanity and seems to rebuild or more genuine and non-automated ways of connecting and communicating. I pledged my budgeted amount to WFMU this morning but really appreciate this show and your commitment to helping us navigate our own sanity in the digital age
Avatar 6:46pm dale:

melinda - yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Webhamster Henry:

We're the longest running freeform radio station in America.
Now available at any decent, net-connected computer in the world.* -- WFMU website, June 29, 1997
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Handy Haversack:

Meant every word. Thank YOU!
  6:47pm melinda:

Hi dale
Avatar 6:49pm Fredericks:

I think Stashu may have played Listener Guy the other day.
Avatar 6:50pm dale:

my flush with money days are becoming a thing of the past. and by flush with money, i mean having more at the end of the year than i started with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm HOWARD BEALE:

Look at this belt buckle. LOOK AT IT pledge.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm chris:

if i were in for-profit tech, i'd ramp up to the big S4L program in a second. thanks, Mark for all you do. pledge early and often, techies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm ultradamno:

Never ask people if they want to hear the good news about anything, you won't get through the sentence before getting shut down.
Avatar 6:51pm dale:

howard - that is a computer simulation of said buckle. i can't be fooled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm HOWARD BEALE:

Yeah, that shadow sort of gives it away
Avatar 6:53pm dale:

but i never realized the MU had udders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Handy Haversack:

Andy has $8! Make him do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Webhamster Henry:

I as hoping you'd play Ghen Co Vy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm HOWARD BEALE:

That's a bingo
Avatar 6:58pm Fredericks:

I am glad Ken mentioned how difficult the lyrics to the song are to understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Handy Haversack:

Way to penetrate, Techyons!
  6:59pm P-90:

Thanks and congrats, Mark and Ken and Techtonic Crew
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm ultradamno:

That cartoon is making me sympathetic to the corona virus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm ultradamno:

Stamping is of questionable use.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Webhamster Henry:

(You can mash this up with Never Gonna Give You Up).
Avatar 7:01pm dale:

that just rolls off your tongue. there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Vietnamese, send Ken your dongs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Handy Haversack:

masterful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm chresti:

Thanks Mark and Ken and jealous corona!
