Avatar 3:02pm monkeyz:

this is why i only ride this train, the wonderful spam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Webhamster Henry:

The Internet term "Spam" literally comes from that routine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Phillippe Bastille:

Good afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Also: the computer language Python is named after them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm David Dichelle:

Hey Henry, Monkeyz, PB - fresh spam for everyone today.

Hello, David, and all aboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm David Dichelle:

Hello DocJ, Stanley, LOT, Sem!
  3:22pm Dean:

A Tony McManus track would fit well with this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm David Dichelle:

Hey Dean, staying in Brittany for one more track - then Roud 34.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Stanley:

Digging this Rai
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Stanley:

Now I'm confused!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Phillippe Bastille:

Damn. 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Jamaica, Tsunami warnings issued.
Avatar 3:32pm Sem:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Yvang:

EDF is also the french main power provider.
Avatar 3:36pm βrian:

That flora!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm David Dichelle:

Yvang: I knew I recognized those letters from somewhere. For some reason we have a deck of cards with the EDF logo on them at home.
Avatar 3:44pm northguineahills:

Knew that was Martin Carthy from the first utterance...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm David Dichelle:

Hey NGH, yes he is quite distinct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm David Dichelle:

PB: Yikes, just read your last comment now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Carmichael:

Whoa David, you're hitting all the great artist in one set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm David Dichelle:

Carmichael, this Roud series is indeed a good excuse to explore the repertoires of a few great ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Stanley:

A guinea is/was one pound and one shilling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm David Dichelle:

Decimalization really did away with a few gems - or coins, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Stanley:

Guineas had pretty much died out before then, David.
I got a shilling a week pocket money when I was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm David Dichelle:

Well at least got to use one-pound notes during my first visit to the UK.
Avatar 4:11pm northguineahills:

Wow, Stanley (since the pound got decimalized in '71....). My first visit was '93.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Stanley:

I'm surprised there are still 1 dollar notes in the US
Avatar 4:13pm Sem:

Stanley, I understand there was a dollar coin minted but it didn't catch on?
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

We have and still have dollar coins, but considering I only use cash at cash-only bars, I haven't seen one since NYC.
Avatar 4:15pm βrian:

They're still around but just not used so much. I own more loonies than I do US dollar coins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Stanley:

Hi Sem. I've been boning up on tipping etiquette in NYC, ahead of my upcoming first visit. Seems a minefield. I suppose those dollar notes are good for that though.
Avatar 4:16pm βrian:

Heh, I'd never heard of a cash-only bar before I moved to WI.
Avatar 4:17pm Sem:

I am led to believe they are popular in strip bars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm David Dichelle:

I used to get lots of dollar coins from train ticket machines. Once someone refused to take it and thought it was fake.
Avatar 4:19pm Sem:

Looking into the mysteries of the PATH train, and the pleasures of Newark Penn Station myself...
Avatar 4:19pm northguineahills:

@Stanley (dollar notes): that blow isn't going to snort itself (am I doing this right?)
Avatar 4:20pm Sem:

heh, ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm redkayak:

Good evening all! Checking in late - sorry I missed the Terry Jones tribute....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm David Dichelle:

Ahoy Redkayak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm David Dichelle:

Speaking of coins, it was announced today that the 1 and 2-cent euro coins may soon be taken out of circulation.
Avatar 4:22pm still b/p:

We periodically have it explained to us why dollar coins are more durable and advantageous, and we either just yawn or more directly resist introduction efforts. It's like Charlie Brown's teacher advising us to adopt the sensible money form..."Bwah-wah-waw Bwap-bwep-bwup-bwahhh!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm redkayak:

@David - Ahoy, captain!
Avatar 4:22pm βrian:

How often are euro cents used?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm redkayak:

@still b/p - it defies imagination that we don't have dollar coins - in use- in the US....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Stanley:

ngh- at these cash only bars, what is the usual tip per drink? I don't want to hand over a dollar to find it wasn't enough.
Avatar 4:27pm coelacanth∅:

greetings David and highly mobile freedom fighters of the subterrain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm David Dichelle:

Salutations, Coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm David Dichelle:

And still b/p!
Avatar 4:29pm northguineahills:

@Stanley: No matter the cost/drink, be it $3 or $14, I tip $1/drink.
Avatar 4:31pm northguineahills:

(If I'm flush[that was a forever ago], and the >$10 drink was really good and the bartender was cool, I might drop $2 every other one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm David Dichelle:

βrian: All the time, unfortunately, holding up many a cashier line. And cash continues to be used a lot more in Germany than many other places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Webhamster Henry:

This Grace Chang was on one of Ken's Marathon Premiums. It's a doozy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Stanley:

ngh - I hear you. I suppose it's a different game if you run up a tab and you get a bill with tax etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm David Dichelle:

Henry, sounds like my kind of premium!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Webhamster Henry:

They round everything physical to .05CAD in Canada.
"On March 29, 2012, the Canadian government announced that the 1¢ coin would be retired.[1] The Royal Canadian Mint stopped producing 1¢ coins in May 2012, and in February 2013 the Bank of Canada stopped distributing them, but the coins remain legal tender. Cash transactions are rounded to the nearest 5¢, while non-cash transactions (using cheques, credit cards, or debit cards) will continue to be rounded to the nearest 1¢."
Avatar 4:36pm βrian:

What about paper checks? A lot of places no longer accept them in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm David Dichelle:

I haven't seen a paper check here since the 1990s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Webhamster Henry:

There was a recent kerfluffle about no-cash stores that were forced to accept cash.
Avatar 4:37pm coelacanth∅:

i go to a cash-only bar, but there's an atm in the corner. $1. for beer, a shot or a barely over regulation neat; $2. for a decent mix drink or 3 if it's a double that's really more than a triple. (unless the bartender's an asshole but there are no asshole bartenders working there presently. asshole people maybe, but decent bartenders)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Webhamster Henry:

Happy Year of the Rat, BTW.
Avatar 4:39pm βrian:

There's a movement in the US, too, to require cash transactions to be an option in retail establishments. Amazon, naturally, wants to go cashless.
Avatar 4:39pm northguineahills:

I used paper checks for my last landlord until he finally got Zelle...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm David Dichelle:

Indeed, happy lunar new year one and all! I thought about doing rat songs, but...
Avatar 4:40pm northguineahills:

a 7.7 earthquake just recorded b/tn Cuba and Jamaica. No reports of damage yet... People in Miami felt it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm dutchtheo:

Ni hao, checkin in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Stanley:

Thanks coelacanth. I think I'll go with that.
Avatar 4:41pm coelacanth∅:

i agree, all businesses open to the public should be required by law to accept cash; conversely, any business that wants to have a minimum for a credit card purchase should be allowed to. (it's currently illegal)
Avatar 4:41pm βrian:

I expect they'll had the coronavirus to the lunar zodiac, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm David Dichelle:

Good evening, Dutchtheo!
Avatar 4:44pm βrian:

Minimum purchase requirements are allowed in the US, from what I know. And I think it was finally made legal to permit surcharges for credit transactions, but I'm not positive.
Avatar 4:52pm coelacanth∅:

last i knew there was either a law against requiring a minimum purchase; or the credit card companies were allowed to make the call, which always was no minimum obviously -since it's in their best interest. (even though it fucks over the small businesses)
maybe that's changed, not keeping track. i know businesses that have a minimum and i respect that; but i've been in there when a customer gave them a hard time about it.
Avatar 4:52pm Sem:

Always amazed at cover versions. Thank you, DD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm David Dichelle:

Thanks Sem, my pleasure!
Avatar 4:55pm Sem:

...especially from those formative 60s years.
Avatar 4:56pm still b/p:

The Sandie Shaw verse vocal is kinda easy and noddy, but the chorus'll getcha outa bed quick!
  4:57pm chresti - LA:

Shrill chorus
Avatar 4:57pm βrian:

I'd gladly pay a small surcharge to cover merchant costs rather than having to have cash on hand.
Avatar 5:04pm coelacanth∅:

not me! but i do think the business owner should have that right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm David Dichelle:

There are still many establishments here that are cash-only, and only some with signs indicating it beforehand.
Avatar 5:11pm coelacanth∅:

i'm never not okay with Eno
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm David Dichelle:

With Robert Fripp here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

The first place I recall refusing cash was a SCAN furniture store around us. One of their employees was murdered in a botched robbery and from that point forward you could only use a check or credit card. This was 25 years ago or so I think. Unheard of at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm doctorjazz:

Nice Eno album, pop-like, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm David Dichelle:

Sweden is close to being entirely cash-free at this point, or so I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm David Dichelle:

Doctorjazz, yes, although some wilder tracks on it as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Phillippe Bastille:

I hope the U.S. doesn't go all cash too soon. I've been sitting on that D. B. Cooper money for a couple decades now, getting to be time to start spending it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Phillippe Bastille:

cash-free I shoulda said... that makes more sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm David Dichelle:

Makes cents to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm chris:

Femmes! woot!
Avatar 5:34pm northguineahills:

Violent Femmes, reminds me of senior year of HS and freshman year in uni who saw w/ my best friend at the time (she introduced me to music, and was my French Horn section leader).
Avatar 5:35pm northguineahills:

Then after her BA, she joined the USOC cult, and cut ties w/ all non-believers, a weird twist me and my friends never saw coming....
  5:37pm melinda:

Hi volks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm chris:

saw the Femmes live a few times. their Add it Up tour show in SF (late 90's?) is still one of the most fun shows I've attended. looks like they're touring again soon, too.
  5:41pm melinda:

I made a conscious effort to use dollar coins for a while but gave up. Still like using cash though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm David Dichelle:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm David Dichelle:

NGH: That sort of thing is always very hard to understand. And that's not the US Olympic Committee, I gather.
  5:48pm melinda:

What is USOC?
Avatar 5:51pm northguineahills:

whoops UCOC, United Church of Christ (If memory serves).
Avatar 5:52pm northguineahills:

When I saw the Femmes, it was '94.
Avatar 5:52pm northguineahills:

Although the US Olympic Committee can be rather draconian....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm David Dichelle:

NGH: Could it have been the Moonies (Unification Church)?
  5:55pm melinda:

United Church of Christ is mainline Protestant, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm chris:

thanks, David. hopping off here. ciao, tutti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Phillippe Bastille:

Thanks David. Wife is under the weather so I inherited stove duties tonight. Catchya next week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Chris and Phillippe, take care!
  6:02pm chresti - LA:

Very nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm ParUbi:

The United Church of Christ is pretty progressive. The collaborate with the Unitarians a lot.
Avatar 6:04pm northguineahills:

it's one of the church of christs out there, and I remember one of my students in grad school trying to get me to join. Oh, it's the ICOC, International Church of Christ (yes, Gainesiville was where its modern incarnation started, go figure, Florida man strikes again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm ParUbi:

Oh, they're *way* on the other side of that spectrum. That makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm David Dichelle:

Hey ParUbi, yes I believe the Jeremiah Wright church is also UCC.
Avatar 6:09pm northguineahills:

Sort of like the differences b/tn the Presbyterian Churches, PCA & PCUSA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm doctorjazz:

Heading out, thanks, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm David Dichelle:

Thank you, Doctor J, have a great evening!
  6:12pm melinda:

@ParUbi that’s what I thought, they collaborated on a comprehensive sex/relationship ed program for youth.
  6:13pm melinda:

I find it fascinating that there are so many different Christian denominations in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm ParUbi:

@melinda That's right. And @David, that's Obama's church, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm David Dichelle:

ParUbi, yes exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm David Dichelle:

Melinda, not so many over here, but also not very many churchgoers to begin with, especially here in the East.
  6:22pm melinda:

I think separating church and state means that people don’t associate church with state and therefore don’t become disillusioned and drift away, as they have in some European countries. At least that’s one theory I’ve heard. Also the country was founded on a tradition of breaking off and starting your own thing, so it makes sense that there would be all these splinterings.
Avatar 6:25pm βrian:

Whew, I missed my stop on the way home. Back to subway, now.
  6:27pm chresti - LA:

America founded on splinters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm David Dichelle:

Hope it wasn't too much of a hassle, ßrian, welcome back in any case.
Avatar 6:31pm βrian:

Nah, it was an "aventure," as six-year-old says.
Avatar 6:37pm βrian:

Heard on the radio that London Calling is now 40 years old. Dear me.
Avatar 6:39pm coelacanth∅:

internet's giving me a hard time here, and i've been working; but before the show's over i want to once again compliment your playlist image.
(one of yours as usual, i presume)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm David Dichelle:

Children are great linguistic innovators - I wouldn't be surprised if that is where many language changes start.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Coel, yes I took that picture just a few hours ago, in fact. The rather grand entrance to a park just outside Leipzig. And sorry about your Internet.
Avatar 6:42pm βrian:

I'm really amazed not only by the vocab she picks up, but the seemingly thoughtful intonation and timing of her delivery.

(She likes to give advice, BTW.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm David Dichelle:

βrian: She does sound amazing, enjoy those special years! (Well they're all special, I suppose.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Martinibomb!
Avatar 6:48pm coelacanth∅:

40 years ago i was sadly disappointed when i heard the newest album from one of my favorite bands, the clash... but suddenly those in our circle and extended circle where more open to "punk rock", so i guess it served an important function.
...there are some good songs on it. the arrangements aren't very inspired, like what came before.
Avatar 6:52pm monkeyz:

time for some hayhitting, thanks for the ride!
Avatar 6:52pm Martinibomb:

Ah man just catching the end
Avatar 6:53pm coelacanth∅:

the end of the line! Thanks David!
Avatar 6:53pm βrian:

The Clash is what got me ready for my second daily shifty of waiting tables. Fourteen-hour days didn't seem so bad with their help.
  6:53pm chresti - LA:

Thanks David!
Avatar 6:55pm βrian:

(Meaning the first album.)
Avatar 6:55pm coelacanth∅:

"punk" was good for that! i remember going to apply for a job and feeling my usual "why would they hire me?" but listening to the sexpistols (who i didn't even like all that much) and going there like they'd be fools to not hire me.
they hired me!
Avatar 6:57pm βrian:

Thanks, David. I'm off to the kitchen to slave away.
