Avatar 8:09pm mariano:

Hi Gaylord! [Dorfman voice] This is gonna great!
  8:09pm Joe R.:

I will defend to the end that “I Must Be in Love” is a straight-up great song on its own merits, no pastiche qualifiers necessary
Avatar 8:09pm mariano:

Pfft. *...gonna *be* great, ffs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Consider the ambition of the whole Rutles enterprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm WR:

So he was such a bad shot people stepped back cause no telling who might get hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm WR:

The Beatles are a necessary but less developed predecessor to the Rutles just as the Everly Brothers were for the Beatles.
  8:17pm Chriss in London:

Rev Rabbit, music and comedy, like music-hall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm redkayak:

@WR - Remarkable insight there, lol....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Gaylord Fields:

Welcome, everyone! While Ira and I prepare the songs, feel welcome to discuss Neil Innes and his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm WR:

Innes Tiny Desk appearance is short but essential and sweet.
  8:22pm judy from croton:

Wonderful, wonderful; in the fullest sense of the word.
  8:23pm judy from croton:

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm chresti:

I love Intro/Outro.
  8:34pm Gary:

Bonzo Dog Band, between The Kinks and Spirit at the Fillmore East. A memorable concert experieince.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm WR:

I also made mistake of wanting Innes post Bonzos work to be more obviously funny, missing what great songs they are.
  8:34pm Joe R.:

thank you for the much better wording of my comment Gaylord :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm sugarwolf:

I believe the show was Blue Peter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm WR:

We are all here for the greater good. Isn't this from Do Not Adjust Your Set.
  8:39pm Chriss in London:

it was!
  8:40pm Chriss in London:

do not adjust your sets
  8:40pm Will:

Gary, you beat me to it. I was at that show and Spirit was great too but some reason I have no recollection of the Kinks.
  8:42pm Will:

RIP Neil Innes. Also Viv Stanshall. While we're at it, Terry Jones
  8:42pm V Priceless:

Woo!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm WR:

Ah, not so sure about Do Not Adjust Your Set. Bill Bailey not listed on the DVD package I have...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Blue Peter is correct! Verified!
  8:46pm Carmichael:

Oh my gosh, an Innes tribute!
  8:47pm Carmichael:

I also just saw the Viv bio, In the Canyons of His Mind.
  8:48pm rw:

Man, it sucks when people pass away, but it's so nice to hear this. I had only been vaguely familiar. Thank you Gaylord and Ira.
  8:49pm Carmichael:

The world can never have enough Rutles.
  8:49pm Chriss in London:

@sugarwolf Wow..Blue Peter. That is/was radical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Nardo:

I always liked the more straight up Neil pop tunes like "What do you do?" and "I want to be with you" from Keynsham, but all the Bonzo stuff is indispensable.
Avatar 8:51pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello gents. Thank you for this wonderful ode to A great man (or two).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm redkayak:

I hope you play Cheese & Onions....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm melinda:

That was me, didn't know anything beyond some Rutles songs but have really appreciated learning more from the tributes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm WR:

I was happy that WFMU had a special on Innes on his birthday in early December.
  8:54pm Carmichael:

I hope to hear Ouch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm melinda:

@Carm I started watching that on Youtube
  8:55pm Carmichael:

Did Innes do that odd Elton John character on Rutland Weekend?

  9:02pm Ken Thornton:

Hi Gaylord and Ira. Just tuning in. Glad to listen to you celebrating our friend's music. Ira, we met a time or two at Neil gigs in the States. Miss him.
Avatar 9:02pm mariano:

Oh yeah, Carmichael - I had no idea there was such a thing as Rutland Weekend TV till a few years ago, was such a happy discovery. The only post-Python show I was aware of till then was Ripping Yarns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Parq:

Love the arrangement on "Spontaneous" as much as anything else about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm WR:

Agreed on point that The Rutles are widely known. When visiting family recently, found that to be true. Several of them knew nothing of the Bonzos and little about the Pythons but felt The Rutles songs are great beyond being Beatles parody. Twas nice to find I had more in common with family than blood and penchant for beer and tequila.
  9:06pm Carmichael:

Agree that, the more you know about the Beatles, the more you appreciate the Rutles. The minutiae of the humor is staggering.
  9:07pm Joe R.:

“The champagne was Canadian” might just be the best opening line in a song ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm redkayak:

@Joe R - Indeed...
  9:08pm Ken Thornton:

A-Brac-A-Da-Bra. That bit in Spontaneous always makes me laugh. It was a bit of poking fun at how Frank Sinatra would break up words sometimes when he sang.
  9:08pm wendy del formaggio:

Hi Gaylord! I’m loving this. One of my fondest show-related memories was when Glenn L. took me to see Neil Innes at the Highline Ballroom. Musta been 2010 or so. His on-stage demeanor was sweet and fun. When he played “Cheese and Onions” my eyes teared up I was so happy.
  9:09pm bigplanetnoise:

Good evening, Gaylord and all Gaylordettes...
  9:09pm Carmichael:

Do I have to spell it out??
Avatar 9:12pm Gina Bacon:

Happy Sunday!
  9:12pm Ken Thornton:

This Love Of Ours was a nice choice, Gaylord! Neil loved the drums in that one.

I saw Neil 10 years ago for free at the Toms River Library.
He signed every LP I brought-- Bonzos, Rutles, Solo stuff and was very gracious.
We talked for about 10 minutes. Great guy and Great talent!
  9:24pm medson:

Tomorrow is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. So might want to ease up on the Hitler jokes for the day.
  9:35pm Carmichael:

Or double down, as Mel Brooks might.
Avatar 9:36pm JakeGould:

Yeah, if you see an elderly Jew who might have survived the Holocaust, might want to run up to them, high five them and say “Yeah! You beat those Nazis!” And then post a selfie on Instagram.

@rocco: You are a very good parent and your daughter has very good taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: No Hitler jokes were told.
Avatar 9:44pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: I realize that my post might have been a bit more stern in tone than intended as typed. Just general jokey advice that tomorrow is not a good day for Hitler jokes… Tuesday? Yeah, okay.
  9:45pm Carmichael:

But Hilter and Bimmler jokes? Certainly.
Avatar 9:45pm JakeGould:

I would love to go back in time and give Hitler a can of fancy mixed nuts… Oh boy would that guy be in shock when he twisted open the top of that can.
Avatar 9:46pm JakeGould:

God, my Hitler joke joke came off harder than intended. WhataschmuckamI!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm chresti:

  9:52pm Larry in Merrlin:

Great tribute. I was exposed early to the Bonzos as a teen in England. Neil did a great show in 1986 at the old 9:30 Club in DC.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Gaylord Fields:

Avatar 9:56pm JakeGould:

Thank you, guys
  9:57pm Carmichael:

Beautiful ending, Gaylord and Ira.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Nardo:

Thanks for remembering Neil!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm ParUbi:

Thanks Gaylord and Ira!
Avatar 12:38pm Brian in UK:

Thanks so much Gaylord and Ira.
I bought Gorilla just before Christmas '67 with my paper round money. I was amazed by the singer (Viv) who could sing in so many styles. Then wonder of wonders they were on the TV on Boxing Day in Magical Mystery Tour.
Subverting the pretensions of Pop music excited my fifteen year old self though ofcourse I would never have used those words then.
Avatar 12:48pm Brian in UK:

Gaylord, seeing your rendition of Intro/Outro sealed my love for FMU.
  5:14am William Kates:

This is amazing. Some deeply wonderful stuff I'm less than familiar with in here, and so beautifully set together. GREAT show. Thank you for doing this, Gaylord.
  5:38am William Kates:

And Ira, too, to say the least! Neil just loved you and Yo La Tango. Losing Neil has been so hard. Thank you guys for reminding us all of this incredible, joyous music.
  8:30am Arthur Adams:

Great programme with some rarely heard songs that deserve a wider audience. (I think, though, that the song you identify as Song For Yvonne is actually This Love Of Ours)
