Hi, everybody! The busted water main in Manhattan was right by my work, so I get to work from home and turn up the radio as loud as I want to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm bɿɒiniɒc:

"roiling boil" is hard to say 3 times fast. But not as difficult as "Arnold Palmer."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Phillippe Bastille:

Weird malady thing: I have what used to be mild misophonia related to a particular sound. We have a dog that is ill and is making that sound with a regular frequency, which is making the misophonia pretty intense. There is a particular sound in one part of Calling Jesus that approximates that sound that literally makes me crazy.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Madame Psychotique:

Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Krys O.:

Sorry, Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Krys O. Thanks. I can no longer be in the same room with the dog, it would be terrible if it got to that with FMU...

Hi Raviolis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm crateslinger:

That's a bummer, Phillippe, but don't worry about WFMU - like the weather just stick around it'll change. On a related note, my dog makes me leave the room too, but for another reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm olivia:

hey everybody! thanks for joining me today!

(say the letters like g-l-o-r-i-a) I'm sure she's never heard that one before...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm crateslinger:

It's an old song from the sixties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm crateslinger:

the Kinks or the Beatles or something like that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Phillippe Bastille:

@crateslinger. Fingers crossed! Never thought I'd see the day when a dog licking itself would immediately turn me into an arsehole, but that day done arrived. Got to be something unique about the sound with that particular dog, because the other pups in the house doing the same thing doesn't bother me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm crateslinger:

That's some obscure switch being thrown, Phillippe - like face blindness or something. I imagine once you notice it, then the obsession kicks in and it just gets worse. At least that's how I would deal with it.
  3:52pm Emily S:

Lizzo and Clipping in the same set? Today is a blessed day. Thanks Olivia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm crateslinger:

Well that's enough of me. Off to visit a friend in the hospital. I haven't said it in a while, but I have said it before - this is the best show on the radio.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm ParUbi:

Hi Olivia & everyone
  4:40pm Martinibomb:

It's not always raining but it is a good myth worth perpetuating. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm olivia:

isn't it always raining in portland?
  4:41pm Martinibomb:

^No, it's actually pretty mild and nice for the most part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i was praying for rain in portland that week it hit 106 degrees with smoke-filled air. Ay!
  4:42pm Martinibomb:

perfectly suited for humans. yes it does rain.. but it's like a fine mist. Nobody even uses umbrella's here
  4:43pm Martinibomb:

ohh yeh we get a hot day every once in a while and that fire a few years ago yeh that sucked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

you can tell the tourists in portland by their umbrellas and you can tell the tourists in SF by their shorts and tank tops
  4:45pm Netochka Nezvanova:

Portland (OR) has a January avergae high of 8 and low of 2. So, not too cold. However, 18 days a month have rain, which is extremely high.
  4:48pm Luisa24:

So very psyched to have won the Michael Hurley tix. They were sold out when I went to purchase! At leads I get to go to one show! Yay! Thanks Olivia! YOU ARE THE BEST!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Rich in Washington:

It's snowing at my house and I'm about 24 miles from Portland.
  4:49pm Martinibomb:

^break out the sled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Carmichael:

My daughter and brother both live in Portland. I should ask little Carmichael if it's snowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Rich in Washington:

Portland is famous for people who freak out when there's half an inch of snow. The oldtime Portlanders blame the recent transplants for bad snow driving in town but Pacific Northwesterners are inherently bad at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Rich in Washington:

@Martinibomb: I don't sled anymore. I am too breakable in my decrepitude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

golly, when i was growing up near Portland, half an inch would shut down the schools! Yet we could barely scrape together a proper snowball!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm RomanDogBird:

i like doom but what about gloom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Rich in Washington:

I did, however, stock up on coffee, cheese, beer, and wine. I can wait it out. As long as our power and internet hold out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Rich in Washington:

@Granny: and Longview would get more snow than Portland ever could, usually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

@Rich:and i never knew how good i had it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm mariano:

Hey Olivia, hey everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm coelacanth∅:

what? is it going to snow? is it winter already?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm mariano:

@Rich in WA: Remember a few years back when two inches of snow brought all of Atlanta to a standstill? Jason Sudeikis had a funny bit on SNL's Weekend Update on the incident.
  5:00pm Martinibomb:

^The weather reporters are threatening us with snow in Portland proper but it's only snowing at higher elevations right now.
  5:01pm Martinibomb:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Handy Haversack:

Gotta take the dog out, and Kate's going to start running her set, so this concludes radio time for me for a while -- great show today! Thanks, Olivia. L8r, everyone.
  5:03pm Netochka Nezvanova:

It's pretty amusing to hear people talk about anything "shutting down" with a little over a cm ("half inch") of snow. What specifically changes in life when that happens? Walking, bicycling and driving all happen on unlceared roads with 1cm of snow.
viz, yesterday:
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I don't understand how it can be snowing this time of year. in New York State. My grass is turning green.
  5:05pm Netochka Nezvanova:

I just keep moving 10 degrees closer to the equator every decade, so am obliterating season variance.
  5:06pm melinda:

Unless you have snow plows, sand trucks etc. I think it’s reasonable to freak out over small amounts of snow, if that means just staying home. Everyone driving on the snow packs it into ice, that happened here in Portland ME one year when the plows didn’t get out in time for evening traffic. Chaos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm mariano:

I lived in Nebraska for five years, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's how to drive on snow and ice. After six minor fender-benders my first winter there, that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm zopa:

yay boogarins!
  5:09pm Gygglez:

Blessings Olivia! Never thought i would hear them on the radio.
  5:11pm melinda:

If you don’t get regular snow a half inch is a good excuse for a snow day, everyone needs one.
  5:12pm Netochka Nezvanova:

A snow plow and sand trucks for a cm of snow? Come on, man! That's a bit bourgeois. Just walk, bike or drive over the ice.
Haha you guys are making me think Americans need to learn to drive better!! I've never heard of any of this.....and no Nepalese or Bulgarian is going to get in a car accident bc of small amounts of packed ice on a road. I guess wealth makes even 1 cm of snow scary, though....this is an interesting conversation. And it has a great soundtrack.
What happens there when the sun comes out? :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm coelacanth∅:

what melinda says makes sense; and i love an excuse to stay inside all day... still i can drive a 28-year-old rear-wheel-drive car through a few inches of snow &/or ice and not crash or get stuck.
  5:14pm Netochka Nezvanova:

Actually I take it all back: I'm staying in anytime it's below 5 degrees and just listening to Earthlogoff all day!
  5:14pm melinda:

@Nenotchka you’re right, the situation here in Portland involved more than a cm of snow.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My dear grandpa used to joke that one day he'd steal a snowplow truck and start driving south. When he found someone who'd ask "What's that thing?" then that's where he'd stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

snow was so rare where i grew up—not even every year— that no one had ANY experience in navigating it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm coelacanth∅:

well yes Netochka - most americans never learn to drive well...or do many other things for themselves for that matter. this is good for "handymen" and property managers!
Avatar 5:15pm thormagma:

y'all should see the video of a rush hour quantity of houston drivers on I-10 turning around to go the wrong way down an entrance ramp to avoid driving over an small icy bridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm RomanDogBird:

earthlogoff shred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Carmichael:

It snowed once here in the Sacramento Valley, and it was just a dusting. We all ran outside and danced like Snoopy.
  5:16pm melinda:

@coel right? I didn’t crash on that day either, most people didn’t, but it would be sad to live where there are no snow days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm coelacanth∅:

haha i want to dance like snoopy!
i don't think i can make my feet do that though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

coelacanth∅: it's ok, you can just do your best and FEEL the Snoopy dance!!!
  5:19pm melinda:

Americans tend to be in a hurry, staying home is a more fun (perhaps bourgeois) way of taking a break from that than creeping along on an icy road where someone else might be driving stupidly and crash into you.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm chresti:

I can't imagine driving in snow, driving in rain is bad enough in So Cal, with the roads flooding due to trash and debris clogging the gutters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm coelacanth∅:

yes i've had a few scary hydroplaning moments. depends on the tires. sometimes one's a fool to not slow down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm coco:

Have not played this in years....love love.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm mariano:

@Nenotchka: It's of course a pretty big country with a variety of different climate zones. Americans from the North and Midwest are as comfortable driving on snow and ice as anyone else from snowy climates. Besides, there are lots of places in the world where an unexpected fraction of an inch of snow would bring things to a complete standstill. I spent part of my childhood in Honduras, where temperatures in December would qualify as a heatwave in more temperate climes, and every so often when it goes down to about 60, you'll see people wearing ear muffs and bubble jackets. I can't imagine the pandemonium if there were a freak snowstorm in the city where I grew up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Carmichael:

Yes, Eddie Hazel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm bɿɒiniɒc:

@Carmichael: As a former Chicagoan, no snow is a big selling point. I was in charge of driving a van load of family members past Mt. Hood over the holidays. There were a few moments there that reminded me just how lucky I am.
  5:27pm Netochka Nezvanova:

When I worked in Malaysia and Laos, local people would wear HUGE NorthFace jackets in "winter" when the temp "plummeted" to.....15! At night!

Yes, it reminds us of the power nature has on our psyche and our emotions to see how differently humans from various geographies are affected by weather. It's incredible, really. But I'm still gonna try and scare an American from POrtalnd or Atlanta with a piece of ice now when I next meet one :P
  5:28pm melinda:

@mariano you are right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Ike:

15 C is about 60 F, right? Let's see, multiply by 2, subtract 10%, add 32... yep, 59 F.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Rich in Washington:

One of Eddie Hazel's finest moments.

once in the blue ridge mountains in n carolina in february we were part-way on a day drive up the mountains when it started snowing. i'm in a 1969 volvo (15-years old at the time) just kept going - passing people pulled over to the side, paralyzed by what had thus amounted to maybe .5" of snow.
then the access road was closed so we went home.

Oooh, I never knew the Funkadelic guitarist's name. Eddie Hazel? Can't believe I've never heard that name!
  5:38pm melinda:

Until you’ve driven in snow you don’t know how your tires will respond, so I can see people just avoiding it altogether. Though if you’re out on the road already it would be a time to experiment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm mariano:

@Ike: I've always used F = (C x 1.8) + 32, so for a quick estimate you can use 2 instead of 1.8. Trivia question: without looking it up, which would you guess is colder: -40C or -40F?
  5:40pm melinda:

Thanks Henry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm mariano:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm coelacanth∅:

melinda i think they didn't even have snowploughs there. more than a dusting of snow was very rare so people panicked. i might've done the same.
  5:45pm melinda:

@coel yeah, if you rarely get snow then a day of panic/avoidance is reasonable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm coelacanth∅:

when i was little my father took us to the empty college parking lot when it was frozen over. we took turns sitting on his lap, controlling the steering wheel while he controlled the pedals, which we couldn't reach yet. he flloored it and taught us how to steer into the skids.
