Matt Klinman on Techtonic - Feb 19, 2018 on "how Facebook is killing comedy"

In tech news:

Ring says it will introduce new security features after hackers broke into a camera in an 8-year-old's bedroom, where they could watch and talk to the child (Business Insider, Dec 13)

Somebody’s Watching: Hackers Breach Ring Home Security Cameras (New York Times, Dec 15): "Unnerved owners of the devices reported recent hacks in four states. [Amazon] reminded customers not to recycle passwords and user names. ... In Waterbury, Conn., Ed Slaughter told NBC Connecticut last week that he felt “violated” after a hacker started yelling obscenities and woke up his mother-in-law, who had been sleeping in the basement where he had installed a Ring camera."

To review...

1. Parents put Amazon Ring surveillance camera in child's bedroom

2. Ring device is hacked, child terrorized in her bedroom

3. Amazon reassures parents: don't worry, just choose a better password next time

Better solution: DON'T BUY AMAZON RING.

How do local Md. governments spend money from speed cameras? Here’s what AAA found out. (Washington Post, Dec 12): Fines from surveillance speed cameras "helps to pay for fingerprint scanners, law enforcement dogs, fees for data storage of body-worn camera video, and license plate reader equipment." Surveillance funds more surveillance.

My swimming pool sharing company may or may not be called Airpnp. Still thinking of a good name for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oops ... the bodily fluids sharing company (ewww!) has already claimed that name.
Avatar 6:06pm herb.nyc:

Ken Hyde Park mentions swimming pools - I learned of SWIMPLY. a pool sharing app. ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Carmichael:

I had to search for BirchBox.

Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Bas NL:

I get positively influenced scrolling down this comments board...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

The model is flawed, I believe. Toys R Us needs to also capture audio so they know why the parent drags the screaming kid away from the shelf. "Come on, honey, that costs too much" "You're not old enough for that" "Santa will bring it to you" "DON'T YOU TALK BACK TO ME!!! WE'RE LEAVING!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

OK, Swimply stole my pool idea. Don't tell me someone's already thought up a way for people to share their electric car-charging hardware in their garages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm ultradamno:

Yeah, that is not something you want to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Megaroni:

Yes, thank you for continuing to call out this horrible corporation!
Avatar 6:17pm herb.nyc:

hmm, for those who don't like their mothers-in-law, buy them a SURVEILLANCE device! I recommend AMAZON.

so funny, it's xmas season and we're told to buy things, but mark is stressing NOT TO BUY something.

I’ve seen a lot about the Ring story. In the future, can you look into Wyze.com cams. Greatly appreciated

e-waste, at a real site. or at pop-ups. www.lesecologycenter.org...
Avatar 6:29pm herb.nyc:

"how Facebook is killing comedy". I thought Carrot Top is doing that. (drum roll)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Phillippe Bastille:

@herb.nyc hey, here's an idea: we should develop a bluetooth showerhead mic so we can record those great thoughts and send them over our home network
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm melinda:

I thought Ring was designed for outdoor surveillance (which is bad enough) but people are surveilling their own families in their bedrooms?!
Avatar 6:33pm herb.nyc:

re blueteeth showerhead mic, let's give it a morality. like, any morality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Webhamster Henry:

Welcome to my job interview life! upshot: still unemployed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Phillippe Bastille:

The Ring story makes me think there's a need to update The Ring horror movie. Samara doesn't crawl out of the tv, it crawls out of the Ring camera. Product placement directly in the movie title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Phillippe Bastille:

*she not it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Mark Hurst:

@WebHen hope it turns around soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Bas NL:

Cameras and AI could detect emergent criminal tendencies in young children... hmmm.. good business model?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm ultradamno:

So did anyone, as a result of being a listener of this show, find the finale of HBO Silicon Valley (the creators kill Pied Piper because of it's inevitable catastrophic consequences) to be naive?
Avatar 6:39pm TDK60:

Sorry to be negative, Bas; bad freedom model.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Bas we kind of already have that in the U.S. All kinds of profiling going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Webhamster Henry:

Is the podcast available on Cassette? #hipstr
Avatar 6:45pm herb.nyc:

mark: "...dont leave me hanging, what are you working on next?". them: "well, I wanted to paint the 2nd bedroom, and..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Bas NL:

He, he... it would need some further study to add positive corrective technology.. Sub-dermal Bluetooth cattle prod? That could easily go to other markets..
  6:45pm P-90:

Now I’ll have to check out their podcast...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm ultradamno:

The Hallmark Christmas movie plot generator forgot elf sent by Santa to reignite someone's faith in the season.
Avatar 6:46pm herb.nyc:

I see the podcasts here - luminarypodcasts.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm ultradamno:

Oh, and that elf is either Bailee Madison, Amy Acker or Summer Glau.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm ultradamno:

...possibly Alicia Witt, though she usually gets the disillusioned career woman roles.

  6:52pm JakeGould:

Would machine learning decide to kill baby Hitler? Or kill baby Yoda?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Webhamster Henry:

cf. Minority Report...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm ultradamno:

I could see a Ring update where Sadako comes out of the screen when you go through the Amazon Prime free trial and try not to up to pay status.
  6:53pm spodiodi:

JakeGould, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Surveillence in the home for "safety" is sick.
Avatar 6:55pm Fredericks:

I only became "aware' of Ring when we got new neighbors a couple of weeks ago. They put a big sign out front advertising it. Otherwise I won't have known.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Bas NL:

Thanks Mark!
  6:55pm JakeGould:

Machine learning would see Hitler as a human baby and let it live. Baby Yoda would be euthanized on the spot. THERE YOU GO!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Michael 98145:

Philip K. Dick was a prophet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm melinda:

@tim I agree. People seem to be suckers for surveillance.
Avatar 6:55pm northguineahills:

safety? I don't even lock my house or car doors....
Avatar 6:56pm sbw:

Many of my family roll their eyes when I worry about surveillance. They understand the issue, but they "don't have anything to hide." I should just shut up, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Phillippe Bastille:

Andy Breckman needs to do a fill-in
  6:56pm spodiodi:

funny stuff -- thanks Matt & Sam! thanks, Mark Hurst!

It's like muppet babies and baby groot never existed. Selfish infant space buddhists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Webhamster Henry:

Andy spent half of last week's show shilling for tips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm coelacanth∅:

Fredericks don't wait for a self-driving car to take out that sign.
  6:57pm spodiodi:

lol Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Phillippe Bastille:
