I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, my radio family fred! Hallos rbrt, and james!
So sad to announce that today's show is my last show of 2019! I wanted to do a pre-recorded show while I'm away in Finland, but that plan fell apart due to my flight schedule.
Avatar 12:03pm Mayuko:

Hi, my radio faimly Sem! Good morning, chresti! Glad to have you all here.

I agree ted, however making irrational decisions is the only thing that makes us humans irreplaceable in this age of AI!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mayuoko, hi All! Finland--sounds exciting. Down and wool, wool and down...

Someone was playing theremin very loud the other day in my neighborhood, the first time it occurred to me to report 311 if it went on for too long despite it being my fav instrument too!
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

Hi Rich, happy to have you here!! Hi Marie, thanks for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Rich in Washington:

A rare Saturday that we don't have the grandkid over, so I'm free to listen to music.
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

@Rich Have you recovered from cold from last week? (or was it 2 weeks ago?)
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

@Ike I'm excited! In which month were you traveling there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm fred:

I hope Rego's temporary roommate has been carefully vetted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Rich in Washington:

I have recovered, thanks to some pills and sprays. It turned into a nasty sinus infection. Between that and my wife's surgery, I feel like we've moved into hospitals and clinics the last month.
Everyone's on the mend now!
Avatar 12:21pm Mayuko:

@fred Do you mean her bipedal roommate, or quadruped ones???

Good Morning (sort of) Mayuko & Vertiglowers
Avatar 12:23pm Mayuko:

@Rich oh I am so sorry that it was a rough month! Glad to hear you all are feeling better now.
Avatar 12:23pm Mayuko:

Good morning, Joe B! Welcome on board, coel!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Rich in Washington:

You must live in a somewhat cool neighborhood to be awakened by Theremin music! That's much better than what we encounter. Here, it's continuously barking dogs, the sound of chainsaws at 7am, or someone randomly shooting in their back yard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

I also once had a neighbor who would randomly play the cello. She once said something about it to us, somewhat apologetically, and I said that of all the things one hears out here in the country, cello practice is most welcome (except between 10pm and 7am).
  12:26pm Ike:

@Mayuko — June I think, and it still wasn’t very warm at all, heh! (This was many many many years ago, so hopefully the Finnish chocolate makers are all still in business.)
  12:27pm Clay:

i have a sneaking suspicion that Mayuko has dreamt of visiting Finland ever since she bought her first smartphone; The Nokia E72
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Rich in Washington:

This is lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm fred:

@Mayuko: I hope she gets along with the quadrupeds, the biped should be OK if you trust them.
I was actually thinking of her a few hours ago as there was a food drive for rescue cats at my local supermarket
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

@Rich I felt like that the theremin noise was coming from a cemetery, but not sure.
Chainsaws at 7am is too much!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Michael 98145:

Greetings, Mayuko, friends.
Avatar 12:31pm Mayuko:

@Ike So I guess it's never get really warm. I'm prepared for the darkness and coldness!!!
  12:33pm Clay:

In the south of Finland, u get 6 hours daylight in December
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm coelacanth∅))):

chainsaws at 7am? gunfire at 7am?
maybe the gunfire was someone shooting at the chainsaw player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm fred:

...and the Moomin museum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅))):

Mayuko is that < one of your creations?
to me it looks like it'd have to be the moon, not the sun, because of the lighting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Rich in Washington:

Theremin from the Cemetery sounds like a bargain basement halloween CD you could buy. In fact, I'd probably buy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm chresti:

Haha coel-shoot the chainsaw player

@rich lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm coelacanth∅))):

At night where I live, sometimes you'll hear a lonesome train in the distance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm fred:

Until a few years ago, I would often be waken up by crows (I don't even hear cars anymore). Sadly, they don't hang out here anymore. But I read that the playground downstairs will be renovated, so maybe they'll put back a slide. The crows liked to play on it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅))):

once there was a car parked right in front of where we hung out with the alarm going off incessantly -one that freaked out if you got close to the car. eventually a few of us got on the roof of the car and danced.

I love black tea, wish I could drink it all day but 1 pm is my cutoff point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm fred:

The last time I spent a night out of a big city, I was disturbed by a constant weird noise. I eventually figured it was the lack of background traffic noise
  1:00pm Marie:

@ coel--I would love to see that (laugh). I wonder if anyone has ever shown that in a movie, or something like that
Avatar 1:00pm Mayuko:

@chocolate monk Haha! I even had some new materials to add to the rants this year, but I have to do it in 2020!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm chresti:

Long ago when I lived in LA, I looked out the window and saw a bunch of kids climbing allover my VW bug, I yelled at them, that was my car alarm.

@Melinda--me too, with raw honey and a lot of milk :>)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅))):

chresti our feeling was if he/she was going to selfishly destroy our ambience we'd just work with it!
Avatar 1:02pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Thanks! Even if I suddenly decide to stay there forever (kinda like I did here in NYC) I could still do my show anyway, haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Mayuko and vertigo-getters.
Avatar 1:04pm Mayuko:

@Marie at 12:54 I think now I see why you started to listen to my show! (Which I am glad you did)
  1:04pm rbrt:

@fred that and a lack of light pollution are usually the two shockers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm chresti:

Marie, add cardamon and you got chai.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm coelacanth∅))):

chresti that pisses me off, people messing with your car when it's undeserved.

Avatar 1:07pm Mayuko:

Welcome, Ken from HP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm melinda:

I use agave in tea so it doesn't interfere with the flavor. I love honey on toast though.
  1:10pm Marie:

I am an ignoramus about chai--chai and I don't go way back--very interesting about the agave...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm chresti:

Marie, if you have any Indian snack shoppes nearby, you'll find chai
  1:16pm Marie:

i've been out and about on days when it is seriously subzero and the quality of light and the sky and the clouds are all unique to that (in December and January in Chicago)--it's really cool to see, uniquely beautiful. Probably Finland isn't that cold but will have its own unique and beautiful conditions (of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm coelacanth∅))):

i don't much like chai tea. i like all the ingredients though!
  1:17pm Marie:

You know, chesti, I've had it, and I am not a big fan--tastes kine of like cereal to me
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

@Joe B Oh yeah, if I don't go there my Japanese citizenship will be revoked. It's an obligation for a Japanese tourist in Finland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm northguineahills:

I loved the architecture in Finland although I know virtually zero about architecture.
  1:22pm Marie:

@ chresti--what about using mushrooms?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm northguineahills:

@coel: TBH in full disclosure, I first heard that as a lyric in a dancehall bass track.

@Marie: You should eat yogurt in a toga when doing yoga in Saratoga....
  1:24pm Ike:

If you need cheap decaf black tea, try decaf Luzianne. It is surprisingly good American stuff. Normally I do not drink the tea of my native land but that’s a solid one.
Avatar 1:25pm Jesse Kaminsky:

I've been thinking about this AI/art thing a lot, I feel like within ten years there will be an AI on faculty at an art school somewhere.

Douglas Rushkoff's Team Human podcast has been an inspiration to me in terms of resisting the idea that humans are completely replaceable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm fred:

Sony researchers have pretty serviceable AI-generated crap music, for commercials and such. The main thing for them is that AIs don't get royalties. Someone should sneak the idea of unions into training sets
  1:31pm Marie:

I say to AI fanatics, watch "Airplane" (the movie) or any Mel Brooks movie and know that we are NOT replaceable!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm chresti:

People will be mad as hell and won't take it anymore, (re-AI)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm coelacanth∅))):

i gave up on the idea of ever finding a decaf tea that's worth drinking.
a few years ago i tried "scottish breakfast tea" by taylor's of harrogate (sp?) and it's so robust and so delicious; and they also make my favorite green tea w/jasmine...so i thought if anyone makes a decaf that's good it'd be them.
it turned out to be the case. not the same of course, but worth having.
...i might have to check out this luzianne though.

Hi, Mayuko, and fellow listenerds.

Re AI, I've been reading this book THE AGE OF SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM (the subject of a Mark Hurst show), and I fear for our future. But I'm generally a pessimist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm fred:

Sadly, most of what Mayuko said make us unique apply quite a bit to AI as well. They're highly dependent on personal experience (aka training sets, which is why results are so hard to reproduce), they learn a lot from failure and adversity (adversarial networks are big these days). What they lack when it comes to art is a connection to us, the social, unmentioned side of it that is a kind of language without words.
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

@fred but do they have feelings for those experiences yet?
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

like fear for dying, aging, losing someone, etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm northguineahills:

I feel the code that made any AI that autonomously creates 'art' is more of the art itself then the actual product labelled as 'art'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm coelacanth∅))):

hi Jeff. there's a fashionable term for that -"philosophical pessimism". it's not actual pessimism, but knowing how bad things are.
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

@fred I guess that's what personally connect us to each other, like you said. > a connection to us
Avatar 1:43pm JosephB:

What we need is an AI that can come up with the perfect decaf tea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm fred:

Probably not, there are primitive things for now, really. But if they did, how could we know? We're having a hard time answering these for most animals, especially wild ones and non-mammals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm northguineahills:

I need a large meal before I drink tea, otherwise it makes me nauseous, and I LOVE tea...
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

@Jeff G The future sounded pretty bad in the program indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm coelacanth∅))):

the thing about "ai" is: there's no reason for it. it doesn't and will never make our world better.
it can only make the world worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm northguineahills:

@coel: It's called being a realist... now, time to get ready to break my back doing manual labor so I can make my bread, and no, I don't work in a colliery town in the 19th century....

You're a realist, @Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm coelacanth∅))):

Michael that's the harsh realism.
