With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Options November 17, 2019: Tusen takk, Herre Kongshaug
A little over half the show's a tribute to Jan Erik Kongshaug, who died on 5 November 2019, was a musician and self-taught engineer with over 4000 credits, many for the ECM label. We'll highlight his first recordings with Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett, and many other greats, and move on from there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Linda Lee:

soulful! good morning Mr. Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm fleep:

"At the time of the recording, Sinatra's divorce from Ava Gardner had been finalized, and Nelson Riddle (who wrote the album's arrangements) had recently suffered the deaths of his mother and daughter. Of these events, Riddle remarked: "If I can attach events like that to music...perhaps Only the Lonely was the result.""
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm doctorjazz:

Ditto to GST
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Linda Lee:

now John Barry! bravo! soundtracks are my favorite genre these days. always evocative & fun because of it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Where has Celia been all my life? Where have i been all her life?
  12:23pm Mark R:

There's some kind of weird noise where the stream sounds like it's cutting in and out. Is anyone else having this issue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Linda Lee:

the streams do this on occasion, Mark, but this time it could be what we're listsening to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Mark R.: my stream is steady
  12:26pm Mark R:

Well it's driving me crazy. I'll return later and see if it's still doing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Linda Lee:

using creative work as bed music is just another layer of creative! let no living work be sacred. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Linda Lee:

if it's still happening for the Stork's voice, then it was the piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Linda Lee:

if it's not happening for Stork, rather!
  12:28pm Mark R:

It was still happening for the Stork's voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Jeff Golick:

Kenny Wheeler loved a title pun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm ParUbi:

hey guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm doctorjazz:

I've come to really Like Jarrett's solo music (didn't used to).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm ParUbi:

@Linda-- I have a riff on that: "let everything be sacred, especially sacrilege"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Linda Lee:

beautiful! :-D
'course, one person's sacrilege is another's chit-chat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm ParUbi:

True enough! That's gotten me intro trouble countless times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Linda Lee:

as it will! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Linda Lee:

please don't worry about the board, Mr. Stork! the music is the thing :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Linda Lee:

what beautiful sets today. we're so lucky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm ParUbi:

It's helping me not be such a xylophobe.
Avatar 1:20pm Wolfgang:

You need a shot of Jay Hoggard, ParUbi. Next week, maybe..
Avatar 1:20pm Wolfgang:

Thank you, Linda Lee. You make a feller feel swell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

yes, this set is lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm fred:

@ParUbi: I had an interesting conversation with a researcher about machine learning. His take was that Kant's views are more applicable than my Wittgensteinian ones because we can't hope to understand AI extensionally, so idealism is a good way to deal with it. Not sure it helps, but it sure is fun to have more people agree with my view that coding is applied piylosophy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL doesn't hear THAT every day! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Linda Lee:

ahahaha!!! Granny knows. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Linda Lee:

'what could my task be in this wasteland on the other side of civilization?'
there's a t shirt for ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm ParUbi:

Is the problem that so much of AI development has turned the actual decision making process into something of a black box? Hence, noumenal in Kant's sense?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm fred:

@LL: I got a T-shirt this week with the illustration on the inside. One of a kind thing, but I can't show it up. He did it on purpose, because he thought I'd get it. I love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Linda Lee:

ha! that's good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

Old WFMU memory jogged loose; this Rypdal track was once the bumper music for the Dave Emory show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

brilliant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Linda Lee:

must say i do miss Dave Emory on fmu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm fred:

@ParUbi: That's it. But I'm still trying to pry open that box
  1:37pm melinda:

Hi everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Linda Lee:

hmm. i see recent FTR shows listed on the website, but have no clue when or where he's heard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm fleep:

Dave Emory is a podcast now, not on the schedule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Linda Lee:

right! just finding that out now! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

hi, melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm fred:

@ParUbi: And my job is to do the same, but faster, so I discard all that could happen but won't. Total extensional hammering at ideas, ruining things but also bringing focus. Wittgenstein should be taught in coding schools. Won't happen in France ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm fred:

@ParUbi: I think decision-making is in Kant's realm, but doing is not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Beautiful beautiful beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Linda Lee:

truly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Linda Lee:

wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm ifny:

Absolutely gorgeous set. You, Wolfgang, are pulling my day out of the whole hole. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm fred:

@ParUbi: I know next to nothing about all this, please point me to where I could learn, keeping in mind the bias I can't shed
  2:19pm Anonymous:

Today's show is moving through some magical musical times that I now long to revisit again. Cherished tunes that I have neglected for too long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm listener james from westwood:

LOL at the Emory memory!
Avatar 2:24pm duke:

Hello Mr. Stork and Stokletts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm fred:

This reminds me of E.E.K.
Avatar 3:32pm Wolfgang:

Hey all you fine speciminos! I know you've all wandered away, and so you can't see this too-late thank you, nor the genuflecting (really, it's a bit much, I have no dignity) that I'm doing from my knees in all your general directions at once. Thanks as ever for the floatatious nature of your support and simple presence. I so love to read the conversations - it was great that both Jeff and I had the same idea, and did it anyway!

Blessings be upon ye,
Stork
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm fred:

@Wolfgang: No need for hazardous knee bending, you and we know why we're here
Avatar 3:41pm Wolfgang:

Whew! Those knees will be happy to hear that.
Avatar 3:51pm Wolfgang:

Hey Jeff! Welcome to the last 90 seconds of my show - by far the best, if you ask me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am WR:

Archive listening and the first set was very interesting, I too am going to follow up further with Ms. Cecilia Condit. Just up to the first Jarrett tune. Thanks for the session details you put in the comments column for the ECM / Kongshaug segment.
