Any Oak Ridge Boys today Irwin?
  3:20pm Tim Spears:

Painting- weirdly specific (test tube, microscope, etc.); may have been a commissioned work for somebody's favorite OBGYN/other MD. Hi Irwin.

I must've passed the basic arithmetic test, I'm IN!!!
  3:21pm prudy:

love this Garfunkel cover...album has another interesting cover of the Water of Mars...
Avatar 3:23pm βrian:

Ugh. Now I have to stop working and clap along to Irwin's bed music. I canna control myself.
  3:24pm berbo:

who doesn't want to hear that?
Avatar 3:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Has thot that the Flamingos' best known version be a production / arrangement that prefigures Psychedelia in them ways...even the perception implied
...but wait - the tune is even older...
  3:28pm Alison Porchnik:

Art Garfunkel..wow, Irwin—you never cease to surprise me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Alison Porchnik:

Is that “right” as in “correct” or as in “not left”?
Avatar 3:33pm Itzall ClearD'me Nåu:

Dear AnAnonymousParty, easy mistake it is a horribly rendered microscope. I only figured it out after seeing the also quite badly done test-tube in his other hand. Also I very much like this "Alvvays". Punchy!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Alison Porchnik:

Oh right, it’s NJ. I’m in CA. And yes, IC, it’s hot as the right side of her neck. Tho still early...

I appreciate the positive portrayal of underrepresented peoples, such as well-dressed gentleman scientists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm chris:

Oh, AP. so sorry! was in Fresno earlier in the week. yuck.
Avatar 3:40pm Irwin:

Is there a Fresyes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Alison Porchnik:

Well chris, it’s just a normal summer here. Can’t wait to get back to the humid and slightly cooler East Coast though.
Avatar 3:40pm Listening Out There:

La La La La La. Don't mind me, just singing. How does it sound?
Avatar 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hypothesis?: Where Humidity is humanly reasonable - hotter when Sun is highest. Where more water - hottest @ sunset when kettle's been on to boil all day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm chris:

no, sir, Irwin. "normal" summer = double yuck and hell no for me (though i lived there for years. years too long.)
Avatar 3:44pm Irwin:

Regarding the painting on the playlist, does anyone have a clue whether it could represent an actual historical figure?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Phillippe Bastille:

I love every bloody thing about summer. High temps, thunderstorms, small craft warnings, beach traffic, rapidly melting soft serve ice cream, mosquitos, horseflies, its all good. Cuz its summer!
Avatar 3:47pm βrian:

  3:50pm Alison Porchnik:

@chris - I can’t take the summers out here anymore either, at least for more than a week at a time. I don’t mind it as long as there is a way of keeping cool during the day. At night it cools down nicely to the 60s, which is great. But how was it possible that I rode my bike around in 98 degree heat all summer as a kid without dying repeatedly?
Avatar 3:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@berbo: Caucasianized wouldn't be a huge shock right??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Phillippe Bastille:

...and now its found. I think you may be right!

Test tube contains urine
Avatar 3:52pm Irwin:

Test tube contains nectaplum extract.
Avatar 3:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Of course - continuous record temperatures & more moisture are the new abnormal...
  3:53pm berbo:

There is a seriously bizarre move where James Mason is abusing cortizone (first synthesized by Percy Julian!) - "Bigger than Life".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Phillippe Bastille:

Just my personal opinion, but I keep hearing how computers and cell phones ruined summer for tweens and teens (at least compared to the ones we fondly remember), but I think the real culprit is air conditioning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm chris:

there is something to be said for a midnight swim, coming out of the pool and laying on still-warm poolside concrete. that's pretty good stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Phillippe Bastille:

@chris agreed wholeheartedly

Berbo - Bigger Than Life is great, and features a still-weirdly shocking moment when James Mason shouts “God was wrong!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Alison Porchnik:

Nice west coast sounds, Irwin.
Avatar 4:06pm Irwin:

Indeed. That tune was "borrowed" liberally by Sun Ra for his composition "New Horizons."
  4:08pm ?:

Irwin, the painting seems to be a copy of this

with someone else's face. Probably done as a personal tribute or joke for some local scientist.
Avatar 4:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Truly sweet 'Birth of Cool' type arrangement...see Jazz ain't always cray cray...
  4:09pm ?:

(either that, or the copyist isn't good at likenesses)
Avatar 4:09pm βrian:

Lempicka! Yes.
Avatar 4:10pm Irwin:

I think it's an attempt to replicate the painting, including the face. Nice find!

But Irwin, we all know that hippies don't need to be Manson Family dirtbags for you to enjoy seeing them getting kicked around, because (armchair psychology alert!) you hate your own previous idealistic hippie self or something, before you were converted to the Good Word of the Free Market.

That said, sometimes those worthless hippies really do deserve it!
  5:06pm John in Bklyn:

A 30-something dude told me he had seen the new Tarantino film. I said "Oh, I read that it takes place at the same time as the Manson murders." He had no idea what I was talking about. I guess that horrific event looms larger in the late-Boomer psyche.
Avatar 5:07pm Irwin:

Tarantino doesn't make movies -- he makes live-action cartoons.
Avatar 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Far more people are slaughtered on an average afternoon in some Burger King these days...
  5:08pm John from Florham park:

  5:08pm John in Bklyn:

I couldn't sleep for weeks after seeing the TV movie Helter Skelter with scary Steve Railsback.
  5:08pm Listener Robert:

That was an extremely enjoyable movie. I was stunned just by the assemblage of all those vintage cars on the street.
Avatar 5:08pm mb:

  5:09pm John in Bklyn:

@Irwin: I'd love to see Tarantino remake Sigmund and the Sea Monsters for the big screen.
Avatar 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm ⓘⓚⓔ:

@JfFP, not what I meant to imply. This was all before I was born and its cultural importance is beyond me. And now Manson looks like a pathetic amateur chump. Why didn't he have an AR-15? What a loser.

Bert coulda had The Beatles in Germany I believe
...but thot they were filthy...
  5:25pm John from Florham park:

@IKE whatever still a dumb thing to say
  5:25pm John in Bklyn:

How the heck did BK & His Orch get that sound back then?! You could hear every note from every voice and instrument perfectly.
Avatar 5:27pm Irwin:

I think that's not the full story, Rev. As I understand it, another label wanted to sign the Beatles after they had recorded under contract for Kaempfert as Tony Sheridan's backing band. BK made certain Sheridan's label would not interfere with the Beatles being signed away. So he did them a huge favor.
  5:28pm John from Florham park:

@RRN63 seen that on Facebook funny
Avatar 5:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ah ha!

  5:32pm John in Bklyn:
