When it comes to windows, summer good and summer not...
  3:02pm holland oats:

wasn't this leonard lopate's theme? #metoo
  3:02pm Dean:

You do realize that Steig's kid is begging for an adverb?
Avatar 3:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or as Chet Baker said - everything happens to me...
  3:04pm Listener Robert:

Meaning the defenestration is coming one way or another, you get only to pick your style, Dean?
  3:05pm Dean:

Exactly. (Also an adverb.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm The Oscar:

I mean, is there anyone who *wouldn't* choose the ice cream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Michael 98145:

{ we've been to the Novoměstská radnice defenestration site in Prague }
  3:08pm John in Bklyn:

Hello Irwin and Chusidians!
  3:10pm berbo:

As much as I like ice cream, I really have no use for cookie dough ice cream. On the other hand, I'm not especially interested in salvation either.
  3:10pm John in Bklyn:

@holland oats: Yeah, Lopate used to use a bunch of Blue Note stuff for segues and beds; Dexter Gordon, Herbie Nichols, Jackie McLean et al.
Avatar 3:13pm aaronfromMI:

Salvation is a bottomles bucket of cookie dough ice cream.

Mike: Dave Mandl and I are big fans of Bunker. There's a terrific extended solo from an Isle of Wight Festival on YT that merits watching. A technician AND an artist.

  3:20pm Dean:

Bunker is impressive with Steve Hillage, too.
  3:20pm John in Bklyn:

Yeah, Bunker didn't get as much attention as the other Brits of that era. He had a nice touch and the jazz/big band influence thing.
  3:20pm peter in SEA:

OMG Irwin, first time I've tuned in and you have an image of Wm Steig's Agony in the Kindergarten on the playlist. Hallelujah WFMU you and I were made for each other!

  3:27pm Listener Robert:

Dean, I suspect any conflict goes the other way, i.e. with Auricle's charter, because how could playing Sun Ra here run against the estate's interest? Or Irwin's kidding.
  3:28pm queems:

i missed jethro tull WTF
  3:28pm queems:

i’ve seen them several times with my dad
  3:28pm peter in SEA:

@Irwin, the big Yellow Book? It's a bible in our house!
  3:28pm Dean:

I think you're right, Listener Robert. It's Auricle.
  3:29pm Dean:

Until about a year ago, I couldn't stand Jethro Tull. Then one day, suddenly, I really liked them.
Avatar 3:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Stand Up' - & what else?
  3:31pm Chi Bill:

I swear by Tull's first 2 albums. Thanks for Cat's Squirrel, cranked the f out of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm coelacanth∅:

Then again, Spin Age gets a show by that name, and Andy B. twists Ken's arm for occasional plugs -- which can be justified as gags, part of the act.
Avatar 3:32pm Irwin:

Sorry for that loss of composure. I am unfond of Aqualung.
Avatar 3:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Aqualung disses old men...I hear ya...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

well, i don't get it. the songs, the arrangements, the playing...
(i think all jethro tull albums up to minstrel in the gallery are excellent; and minstrel through songs from the wood are pretty good)
Avatar 3:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Overplayed is as Good as Bad.
Avatar 3:35pm Monica:

love this andrew bird track. great groove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm coelacanth∅:

i mean -passion play is slightly tedious; war child has some dumb pop songs; but they're still good.
stand up is probably my favorite
  3:36pm John in Bklyn:

A lot of Tull stuff reminds me of Stonehenge by Spinal Tap.
  3:37pm prudy:

enjoying Mr. Bird.
Avatar 3:37pm Irwin:

Mo - Andrew Bird don't miss, do he? Never heard anything by him that wasn't impressive.

A Moet-et-chandon reference!
Avatar 3:38pm βrian:

@Dean: I had that same experience with cilantro. I just loathed it. Then one day: Epiphany!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm coelacanth∅:

i think Ian Anderson's live performances severely undermined the band's talent -caricature of himself he became...
Avatar 3:40pm Irwin:

coel: You think the codpiece was an embellishment too precious?
  3:40pm Dean:

That's it, coelacanth∅, and Anderson even more or less admitted as much in an interview with Rick Wakeman, which was what caused me to like Jethro Tull, the cilantro of rock.
Avatar 3:41pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm coelacanth∅:

hahahaha Irwin... maybe i just have to see more of them then it won't seem odd
  3:42pm prudy:

to a lot of people cilantro tastes like soap..
Avatar 3:43pm Irwin:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Z-pulpa:

ooooh this is nice. greetings friends!
Avatar 3:44pm βrian:

@prudy: Yes, or like licking a 9-volt battery. When I suddenly reoriented my palate, I realized I'd been tasting it upside-down, as it were.
Avatar 3:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cilantro of Rawk! Genius here I swear...
Saw Tull in 60s Revival Show thang - & they seemed more a going concern than that! He can Rawk a flute - believe it...
  3:46pm prudy:

yes, Irwin agreed about EW. New to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm coelacanth∅:

well Dean, i appreciate that he admitted it, but he took it too far, in my opinion. (and it doesn't help that their recorded output got terrible after songs from the wood, and the death treatment of classic rock radio...)
...top-notch musicians that became kind of a joke. sad.
  3:48pm sweet cheri:

hi and good afternoon Irwin, monica and everybody!! monica I can't wait to see you once again,, also I have got a huge treat for you come sunday monica!!
Avatar 3:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like why is this long stringy plant thing w/ the odd taste so rampant in my salsa? Chop it up a bit & try again...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm coelacanth∅:

that there's any band that has a tendency to be disliked then suddenly liked in a revelation strikes me about as when people say "...you either love 'em or you hate 'em" - which does not apply to anyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm rsj:

easy like how?
  3:54pm Dean:

The backstory, I suppose, is that everybody in my crowd at the time loved JT, but I couldn't get over the prancing around and mugging and breathy flute, so I just gave up on the band. Yet I wanted to appreciate what everybody was raving about. As the albums emerged, I found less and less to admire at all. But with several decades of distance I now hear them more clearly.
Avatar 3:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sucking in the 70s.
Let's face it - there was a lot of losing the plot...
  3:57pm prudy:

I also think some music doesn't age well. Some stuff from the 80's just sounds like weird relics to me even though I liked them at the time.
Avatar 3:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I have a bit of a different 80s now then I did in the 80s.
...But it still wasn't *their* 80s...
  3:59pm prudy:

great cover!

That rendition treats that level of songwriting with the respect and honor it deserves.
Avatar 4:02pm Irwin:

Here's your Ra Arrival Day marker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm coelacanth∅:

true for me as well some music doesn't seem to age well; but i couldn't stand most popular music in the 80s even then...same thing with most disco.
and it hasn't gotten any better, even as i get old and subjected to it again.
  4:05pm Mike tp:

one thing I realize N recognize is that the bands of yesterday would tour endlessly around the globe N do it for years.they would hit the stage N give it their all.that was then N glad to have experienced it.im also very glad that WFMU exists to challenge N entertain again N again.and Irwin I have to agree on aqualung.i was so done with them but not in a bad way there was so much yet to be turned onto.happy to be 66 with open ears mind N heart to sound.!!!!
  4:08pm flashbazbo:

I only listen to a jethro Tull album if the RIAA certifies that it is heavy metal.
  4:10pm Dean:

Thanks for the discreet acknowledgement.
  4:10pm John in Bklyn:

@flahbazbo: Ha!! I forgot about that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm coelacanth∅:

aqualung was the first time i heard jethro tull, age 10-11, and i instantly loved it; but all of their subsequent releases were at least a slight disappointment. a few years later, when i explored the first 3, and "living in the past", i fell in love with those too. i never got sick of aqualung though. (might help that i stopped listening to commercial radio by 1980) and i listen to aqualung at least once/year in it's entirety, on or around easter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm coelacanth∅:

wow i like this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm The Oscar:

Huh-- never knew Melanie Laurent was a singer-- this is really nice. Loved her in Inglourious Basterds.
Avatar 4:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Time allows the Context to change. Even when Disco was happening - I knew some of it was just good Pop or Funk. But I'm not revolted by my Dad wanting to dress like Travolta generally wnymore...I mean - Disco was like my age group's WWII or Depression where I was...as bad as - Sports! An obscenity... Took a while to dig Sinatra as not just the Square AntiRawk Honky in Chief for example?...changes...
  4:13pm John in Bklyn:

I saw Tull at The Spectrum in Philly in '79 (?). It was to support some album about Northern Seas Oil or some nonsense. I felt silly sitting there. I just wanted to hear an extended drum solo. The fusion-y prog-y band UK opened. John Wetton, Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozzio.
Avatar 4:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm coelacanth∅:

there always was a small % of disco i liked (in fact my "disco sucks" friends made fun of me for my not hating Olivia Newton-John, and liking b.t. express...)
still don't like Sinatra. that's not likely to change.
Avatar 4:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gotta pick & choose yer Frankie...but not to Franksplain...
Avatar 4:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I like Crooners is a thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm coelacanth∅:

Aldous Harding reminds me slightly of Katell Keineg
  4:16pm Dean:

The small % of disco I liked was mostly Giorgio Moroder. Have to concur re: Sinatra, mostly, but he's one of those guys "you either love or you hate or something midway between the two."
  4:16pm John in Bklyn:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: He had the all-Remo Roto-Toms kit. It sounded pretty good. He's a freak!
Avatar 4:17pm Monica:

thx in advance, cheri.
Avatar 4:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Rural/Urban experience of Disco was divergent.
In the City it was Druggy & Queer & Racial.
In the boonies here - it was the straight Jocks & Live venues turning over...& that one beat off the damn highhat for seven years on the radio & nothing else - it seemed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm coelacanth∅:

i do like "your bim-bam-baby is coming home tonight" (i don't actually know the title) because it's so over-the-top ridiculous that it's as if he's making fun of the absurdity of his persona.
