This sounds fascinating. Glad I tuned in (logged on). Listening in Rural Western Pennsylvania in what feels like the vortex of a cultural void. WFMU et. al. provides needed sustenance.

So is May 15 Moondog's birthday? I wasn't clear on that. My friend's birthday was also May 15 - we just came back from scattering his ashes on the Hudson River.

P Glass on Moondog - profoundly touching. I've been in that East Village house but not when Moondog was there. Just a few times to help on a PG project quite a while ago.

Yes indeed John from Florham Park. I am in a deep Allegheny River valley that only the local radio waves can reach. Mostly goat roping music and Bible thumping ticket to heaven merchant formats, not that there is anything wrong with that.

I received my card yesterday, thanks. I wonder if the postal system considers cards covered with glitter to be good manners or not. That's about all I've got for decorating materials. Bubblegum decoration is right out, I'm sure.

Z-pulpa: Each board has its own subculture in the overarching WFMU culture, which is generally friendly and freeform, for sure. I like that we can have friendly exchanges about all sorts of topics.

And it is so thrilling to hear that the postcards have arrived all over the map to other WFMU listeners! The offer still stands: if you send me your mailing address (via my profile) i will send you a postcard SLATHERED with stickers. xoxox

A friend gave me his copy of the summer 1986 LCD. I don't remember if I was getting LCD then -- maybe have a moldy copy of that one in the garage -- but that's when my WFMU dark period began as I moved to where I couldn't get the station inside my home. Apparently it was hard to get DJs over the summer then, as Irwin had both a Tuesday noon to 4 show and a Thursday 9 to midnight. Some shows on that schedule were 4 or 5 hours and/or hosted by someone who had another show on WFMU (and maybe elsewhere), and "Listener Art" included a fragment of a note, "HELP! I NEED SOME[...] TO SUB FOR ME THIS WE[...]" Nobody took weekday 3 to 6:30 AM either.

so killer
  4:42pm
Listener Robert:

The 1986 marathon brought in $91,194 in pledges. "We hope to eventually come close to last year's rate of return, which was 86%." Ken has said that in recent time they've been collecting much closer to 100% of pledges. Expenses for the fiscal year, which ended in June along with the college's, were $77,982. They were saving up for a new transmitter and recovering from a lightning strike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm

Ahhhhhhhh, i love the rounds
  4:50pm

I just realized how you scraped up that last $3,000 over the weekend: You sent Gentle Joe McGasko to "service" those people with uncollected pledges from 1986.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
WillCrete:

That was a real joy taking the deep dive into all those versions of "High on a Rocky Ledge." -- What a line: "If you´ve the yen to pluck, then pluck us both" -- I never cease to be thrilled by the amount of motion in his music.

OK, this one probably wins for most imaginative reworking of Moondog.

Moondog was part of the modern Odinist revival. You should understand that most of us don't take the myths literally. That's not their purpose. The Jehovistic religions, properly understood, also should not be taken literally.
