  6:52am David in London:

Hey TDK. Top piece of historical dental trivia there. Man, pre-Victorian false teeth must have been, ahem, challenging.

For those unaware, Jeff Conklin's "Avant Ghetto" show on Sunday night/early Monday morn is a fine one, live or by Archive.
  7:00am David in London:

@herb.nyc - I drive past the Hoover Building every time I go back to see my mother. It's on the NW outskirts of London and is a magnificent piece of architecture. It looks beautiful illuminated at night, too.
  7:01am vanya moscow:

Jeffrey, I know, right?! I wanna meet one of them. Meanwhile, guitar player myself, always enjoying your show, one of my favorites on my radio station. Sonic-wise, you know

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15am annie:

i just have to say this: i live on SSI, 900 a month. grateful to live in subsidized housing and FMU gets a large monthly chunk of my dough. it's the least i can do.
Avatar 7:15am TDK60:

Randy, never been to Clarkston but I've been to East Lansing, Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Detroit. Folks in those places need to wake up and pledge...

Avatar 7:30am TDK60:

Yeah, all those "left of the dial" stations; you know. approx. 88 to 92 FM.
  7:32am John from Florham Park:

@annie I know don’t have the money this year but I do spread the gospel if WFMU via social media and next year I am going to do the phones, I have become more intolerant of commercial stations, listen to this station and a couple of others, BTW sorry for being long winded today
Avatar 7:32am B/wad:

WFMU is the best friend that I ever had.
  7:34am Cooh John:

randyfrommichigan, did you listen to CKLW back in the day?
  7:34am John from Florham Park:

  7:39am John from Florham Park:

&Annie I used to listen Chom fm in Montreal until iHeartRadio took over the streaming
  7:39am John from Florham Park:

See ya Buddha
Avatar 7:43am TDK60:

John in Florham Pk. Yes, I found out about FUV's dastardly deed here on the comments board, was living out of this area when that occurred. And some of their DJs affect an odd vocalization that is cloying or "farm league"-commercial.
  7:43am Cooh John:

Where were you listening CKLW from, annie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44am annie:

one of the top things on my list of the joys of growing up in the late 50s and early 60s: RADIO... seriously.. yes, cooh, way out in northport, LI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45am randyfrommichigan:

@John I didn't move to the Detroit area til 1991 ... by then CKLW wasn't Top 40 anymore. But I lived in Sarnia Ontario from '81 to '91, it's about 60 miles from Detroit/Windsor and I listened CKLW sometimes then, it was a great station! I have a DVD documentary about CKLW The Big 800, it's excellent. Have you listened to it?
  7:46am Cooh John:

Wow annie, did not know the signal went that far.
Avatar 7:47am TDK60:

I listen to WFMU for about 85-to-90% of my radio time. I also listen to WNYU, WKCR and WBAI FM sometimes, noncommercial stations in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47am randyfrommichigan:

@Annie I was the same re loving my little transistor radio! Growing up in Toronto in the 70's I remember trying to catch the far-away American stations at night ... one of my best finds was WOWO radio all the way from the Midwest!
Avatar 7:47am dale:

morning people. late snooze in for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48am randyfrommichigan:

the channels that are "clear channel" couldn't have other channels on the same frequency so at night if the weather was right the signals would travel for hundreds of miles or more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am Jeffrey Davison:

Welcome Mike Wolf, randyfrommichigan, Cooh John, Aaron Working in Newark, dale...and kenneth from Denmark, didn't name check you.
Thanks all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am randyfrommichigan:

thanks Jeffery and good morning to you!
  7:49am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 as much as I like Dennis Elysis on Friday with his Beatles stuff that was a little much for me
@randy where do I find that doc about CKLW
Avatar 7:50am dale:

i have a terk tunable loop antenna for the am band. it's the difference between noise and a readable signal. tecsun makes one too (amazon). if you like to dx broadband get one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 excellent you've been to a lot of good spots in Michigan! You need to visit Clarkston, home of Pine Knob / DTE Energy Music Theater where some of the best concerts happen, consistently rated one of the top amphitheaters in the country!
Avatar 7:53am TDK60:

Randy, Annie: Yeah I recall WOWO, one of those powerhouse top-40 AM stations you could pick up most anywhere, driving at night in the Midwest or East.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 yup re WOWO it was a powerhouse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54am randyfrommichigan:

CKLW classic sound: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56am randyfrommichigan:

CKLW disguised itself as being from Detroit but it was from little Windsor Ontario ... program director Rosalie Trombley broke a lot of songs nationally ... Elton John even went there one time and did a guest session as EJ the DJ! ... Bob Seger wrote a song dedicated to her called Rosalie!
  7:57am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 I listen to CFCR from Toronto CKUA from Alberta triple j from Australia here in the states the current from Minnesota WCBN-FM from Ann Arbor
Avatar 7:57am TDK60:

I always try to turn folks onto WFMU. For people under 30, I have to explain the difference between an online shuffle list and an actual radio station with rekkid players, humans, coffee pots, library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58am randyfrommichigan:

@John when I visited WCBN-FM Ann Arbor on Wed. I met the DJ at the time, think his name was Jerry, really cool guy, he's the development director there, said he plays a lot of jazz. He was putting on Steely Dan when my son and I walked in, talk about karma!
  7:58am John from Florham Park:

@TDKTryibg to get my 12 year old neice into this station but it’s not easy
  7:59am John from Florham Park:

@randy very cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 good for you! I only got turned onto it in November ... my son is much brighter than me, when I told him about it in November he instantly liked it and decided to become a DJ at WCBN Ann Arbor ... his first show is this Tues!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00am annie:

i also LOVED WKBW... Tim Kelly(?) was my top fave there, he played music NOT on the top 40; tons of folk singers. i think we moved to texas fo dj there. ...way cool rfm!!

  8:01am John from Florham Park:

@randy me too from November and I am going to set my alarm for your son this Tuesday
Avatar 8:01am TDK60:

Randy: good for him! You might know WFMU's mgr. Ken was at WCBN while a student. So was world music DJ Rob Weisberg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am randyfrommichigan:

@John thanks so much! I told him that on Wed., he was so happy to hear you said that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 yes actually @John from Florham Park told me about Ken aka Staysh ... when I was at WCBN on Wed. I saw an article about Ken posted on the wall ... here is link .....

Avatar 8:06am TDK60:

WFMU changed my life. When I first heard it I actually went straight to the East Orange station to run for rekkids in the library for the crazy wild DJ, when I was 15 in 1967!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 very cool

Avatar 8:08am TDK60:

I'm "over the hill" but still tryin' to grow up, Hee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08am randyfrommichigan:

@dale what was that great Buffalo FM station, they were one of the first to play Top 40 with no DJ, late 70's ...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am randyfrommichigan:

@dale I think it was 102.1 FM ...?
  8:10am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 me too(G)
Avatar 8:10am dale:

rock 102. i don't know the call letters. but you heard the same pairings of songs - the meko star wars music segued into jet airliner by steve miller because of the laser beam sounds.
  8:10am Mike Wolf:

Shit, I didn’t know y’all were hockey fans. JC, I’m in too — Islanders, not Rangers please. (Devils would be considered.)
Avatar 8:10am TDK60:

..there's a photo of the late '60s WFMU DJ crew sitting on the front stoop of the old East Orange WFMU house. I pinpointed that wild DJ but forget his name. No one seems to know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11am randyfrommichigan:

sorry I think it was 102.5 FM (102.1 was CFNY Toronto)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12am randyfrommichigan:

@Dale yes Rock 102! I remember them playing Meco - Star Wars ... I have cassettes I recorded of Rock 102 from that mid/late 70's era!
  8:12am Mike Wolf:

I remember seeing SVE in a solo set at Monkeytown wayback into the mid-’00s. Just vocal. Fan for life.
  8:12am John from Florham Park:

  8:13am Marc15:

What, do you mean the other radio stations besides WFMU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am randyfrommichigan:

WBEN-FM aired a mixture of live and automated music, mostly easy listening and block music programming, such as organ music. As FM listening grew, the station became "Rock 102" in 1973, using the syndicated TM "Stereo Rock" automated contemporary hits format and dropping the morning show simulcast with WBEN. This same TM format and its prerecorded announcer were heard on other stations in Upstate New York during this perio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am annie:

i had made a comment about wkbw, it disappeared.. i was going on about tim kelly, the best dj they had.

@Linda Lee well said and good morning!
  8:15am John from Florham Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15am Linda Lee:

awake, John! you?
Avatar 8:15am TDK60:

Always a bit odd to talk about other radio stations at WFMU, especially during a marathon. But I think we all know things are relative. And WFMU is relatively closer to utopia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15am Linda Lee:

'morning randy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda I posted about a Buffalo NY radio station I used to listen to growing up in Toronto ... @dale refreshed my memory on the name - Rock 102 ... I later learned there was a chain of them thru NY state ... like clones ... it kinda freaked me out back then that Rock 102 wasn't one of a kind

@Linda I agree with you about classic rock or as I like to call classic crock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am Linda Lee:

I'm all for classic rock tbh

that's when spotify et al is good, i guess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am randyfrommichigan:

@dale thanks re WKBW link ... I don't think we could get that station all the way from Toronto ... I was a huge 1050 CHUM-AM and later on 680 CFTR fan
  8:21am John from Florham Park:

&SPam a few years ago I drove up to Boston and was listening to 92.3 krock and before Howard came in was listening to the night bird I was in heaven

@John very cool about the old days of radio
Avatar 8:22am TDK60:

Bob Fass at NYC's WBAI-FM was one of the first "free form" DJs in the late '60s. He influenced Vin Scelsa of WFMU in '67. The rest is free form history. And things are even better today as we have decades more music to choose from! Thanks again Jeffrey & Jeff!
  8:22am John from Florham Park:

@linda what is really sad is hearing a guns and roses song playing in a supermarket when I lived in Florida so yeah I know what you mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am Ciggy:

Working as a stock boy at John Wanamaker's, I would listen to WNEW-FM and Jonathan Schwartz was ending his career at NEW, so he gave a clue as who his successor would be. He said his successor has the initials of a Yankee starting pitcher. The answer was Doc Ellis (Who later admitted to pitching a game while tripping on LSD). So, Doc Ellis = Dennis Elsas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am Linda Lee:

BAI in the ealry 70s was really, really lovely.
  8:23am John from Florham Park:

@randy she was a legend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am randyfrommichigan:

@John yup re rock music from the 80's/90's now becoming Muzak in the supermarkets :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am Linda Lee:

John, it can't be any sadder than supermarket Nirvana.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am randyfrommichigan:

My friends and I are having a trombone quartet rehearsal this morning at 9:30 so I better start getting ready LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am Linda Lee:

  8:25am John from Florham Park:

@ciggy before Jonathan Schwartz got into trouble I would listen to him on Sundays on WNYC just talking up a storm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am randyfrommichigan:

@Ciggy interesting story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda thanks we will be in band geek heaven LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am testingwithfire:

Good morning all! Late to the party ... I'm in Tucson and forgot that 6 am is 4 am out here :-) I hope the marathon surpasses all expectations!
  8:26am John from Florham Park:

&linda when you hear stuff like that it just makes you want to scream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am Linda Lee:

  8:27am John from Florham Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29am randyfrommichigan:

wow I thought this was Bonnie Raitt singing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am Jeffrey Davison:

Love classic rock, believe me. It was like oxygen to a kid growing up. Hate the way it's (mostly) presented, certainly on commercial radio. Love the way it's done here at FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am randyfrommichigan:

sounds like a cross between Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt
  8:30am John from Florham Park:

Me too randy at first
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am Linda Lee:

really similar phrasing. she's heard some Bonnie for sure. Bonnie & Linda R.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am Linda Lee:

heh.
  8:31am John from Florham Park:

@linda how big are the grapes(G)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32am randyfrommichigan:

  8:32am John from Florham Park:

@linda HA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32am randyfrommichigan:

@John yeah almost sounds more like Linda than Bonnie
  8:33am davefromtoronto:

randy plays in a classic rock trombone band.

it's more exciting than it sounds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am Linda Lee:

one funny thing about getting on, you can hear generations of musical influences play out really clearly.
  8:33am John from Florham Park:

Cute randy with the sour grapes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am randyfrommichigan:

ok just finished my 4th (and final) cup of coffee, probably time to find my bone and get ready :)

  8:34am John from Florham Park:

@dave glad you have come up for air
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am Linda Lee:

i do try & avoid sour grapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda yes that is so true ... I remember first hearing deep tracks of Led Zep and thinking they were copying Heart cuz I knew Heart's albums really well ... then realized I had it backwards ... d'oh!
  8:35am davefromtoronto:

what's up john!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda my buddy told me we'll start playing at 10, be there to warm up anytime after 9:30, he's 10 min away so I don't want to be too early :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am Linda Lee:

@randy ~ that's funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36am randyfrommichigan:

@davefromtoronto hey now it is
  8:36am davefromtoronto:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36am randyfrommichigan:

I'm a band guy as my bro @davefromtoronto will tell you about me, early = on time and on time = late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36am Linda Lee:

oh! jeez, it's only 830! too early to do anything but drink coffee, chat & listen to good radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am randyfrommichigan:

@davefromtoronto I decided to spiff up and added an icon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42am Linda Lee:

classic rock: where's Sister Rosetta Tharpe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am mb:

Morning DJ Jeff Davison and all. DJ JC.

Just read about the WFUV controversy in the Beware of the Blog. So petty. Looks like WFMU won the day and we still winning.
  8:43am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 chuck is not feeling too well these days(G)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am randyfrommichigan:

@dave you home all day? I seriously gotta get ready for my bone party that starts around 9:30 a.m. ... can call you later if you're around
  8:44am John from Florham Park:

@MB me too with WFUV really pisses me off
  8:45am davefromtoronto:

yeah call me later.

good luck finding your bone...try a magnifying glass!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am randyfrommichigan:

@John small world but my son is actually @davefromtoronto's nephew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am Linda Lee:

think we could use another fmu show on female musicians. been inspired by chatting with June Millington lately. an excellent, excellent guitarist ~ largely unknown, though that's changing now. her band Fanny was seminal! there would be no Runaways if there was no Fanny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am randyfrommichigan:

@davefromtoronto hey now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda yes I'm familiar with the group Fanny they were definitely ahead of their time
  8:46am John from Florham Park:

@randy you told me Dave is your bro so yeah small world
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am Jeffrey Davison:

hey there Ciggy, davefromtoronto, mb
If I overlooked any comments this morning, sorry!
  8:47am John from Florham Park:

@dave that is so bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am randyfrommichigan:

@John yeah funny how that works ... as Gordon would say The Circle Is Small
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am mb:

@Linda: I just got hipped to Fanny. There should be a Fanny cover band with all females. Those ladies rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am Linda Lee:

what they were up against in their time just to be heard.. phenomenal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am randyfrommichigan:

and apparently so is my bone :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda yes absolutely
Avatar 8:49am TDK60:

Oh my, "I'll Keep It With Mine" by F.C.! Re. all the radio talk: WFMU is tops on my radio list! Gotta leave the building; thanks again Jeffrey for folk on a Sat. morn, steel strings vibrating over wooden boxes and vocals..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am Linda Lee:

@mb ~ June & her sister Jean were playing together again with another original member, Brie Darling, pretty recently. then in January Jean suffered a stroke, so they're on hold for now. i'm waiting for a copy of June's memoir 'Land Of A Thousand Bridges' in the mail now. absolutely incredible story.
  8:50am John from Florham Park:

@linda tell shelia from sophisticated boom boom about it she loves to play that stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda is June's memoir published / available on Kindle? If so I'll DL it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Linda Lee:

i really should. Fanny rocked a little hard for Sheila's show, but who knows!
  8:52am John from Florham Park:

@linda worth a shot
  8:52am davefromtoronto:

i miss bob brainen...

great show btw jeffrey d!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Linda Lee:

June's book should be absolutely amazing. Fanny were the first all female band to record an album! the road from the Phillippines to that achievement is an incredible story
  8:53am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 radio paradise turned me onto this group
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am mb:

Fanny would fit in good on Jeff Conklin's show before a rollicking set of GD music. Just sayin', not requesting.
  8:53am Andrew in Etobicoke:

Great show, as always Jeffrey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Linda Lee:

randy, i don't think it's on kindle yet. but June's recording the audiobook now! here's a link to the book: www.fannyrocks.com...
Avatar 8:55am TDK60:

..that's a great idea Jeffrey! (Thompson)
  8:55am John from Florham Park:

@MB what does GD stand for?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am Linda Lee:

gosh darn?
  8:56am John from Florham Park:

&linda going to to see when my library will get that book
Avatar 8:57am TDK60:

..in Jeff's case, it means Dead Gratefuls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am queems:

always a treat to hear this show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Linda Lee:

it's just been published, so i'm guessing you'll have to request it.
the greatest thing is, June co-chairs a music school for young women in MA called the IMA. bringing young girls & young women into the world of rock! an amazing place. so, proceeds from the book support the school.
  8:58am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 gotcha
  8:59am John from Florham Park:

@Queems morning
@linda that is so cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Linda Lee:

i've got a pile of Dead show cassettes going to Jeff as soon as he lets me know he's still interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Linda Lee:

it really is. she's a good woman.
  9:00am Elle Elle:

Thank you for your show, Jeffrey. I pledged to this and three other favorites. As someone without a steady income I do what I can when I can. Grateful for FMU
