Hi Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Mark Hurst:

Glad to hear this.
  3:02pm prudy:

been looking forward to this show. Thanks in advance Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm dale:

happy to be here to hear out there.
  3:03pm Van:

How come it's coming out in only one channel?
Avatar 3:06pm AnAnonymousParty:

I want one of those bibles. I'll pay double.
  3:06pm dug:

laughing out loud :-D
  3:06pm Listener Robert:

Jim Price's next co-host!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Gosh, today is the day! I forgot about this.
Avatar 3:09pm AnAnonymousParty:

Mom: What are you doing Bobby?
Bobby: Reading about Genesis in the bible.
Mom. That's nice, what part?
Bobby: The part about the lamb dying down on Broadway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Zetti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Lizardner Dave Somethingorother:

Happy to hear Joe Frank on WFMU again.
On the downside 91.9 in NYC seems to be off the air.
  3:11pm dug:

that last bit was awesome :-D
Avatar 3:11pm AnAnonymousParty:

Got both left and right chans over the interwebs.
  3:11pm oks:

Joe is back!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm zopa:

kit AND kaboodle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm dale:

he was also the computer voice in galaxy quest. some savvy casting agent no doubt.
  3:16pm Brendan:

Picking the best of Joe must be tough. Oddly enough, I think the funniest was Natural Disaster, specifically the telephone prayer segment.
  3:19pm Ed Sullivan:

I was in shoe business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Webhamster Henry:

Joe did a phone in for the WFMU Marathon, on Irwin's show.
Avatar 3:22pm AnAnonymousParty:

His voice and mannerisms remind me a little of Rod Serling.
  3:22pm Van:

Will this fil ever make it to DVD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Webhamster Henry:

Here's the old WFMU Joe Frank page, which was based on the Usenet Joe Frank newsgroup, edited by Richard Looney : www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 3:23pm βrian:

Joe lists to port.
  3:24pm ike:

So the voice trick was to chop some of the treble off?
  3:26pm Jim:

How did "Jerry's World" end up in the film?
Avatar 3:27pm AnAnonymousParty:

Dolby is a form of compression. So you are listening to compressed audio that hasn't been re-expanded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Webhamster Henry:

Three Shingles is from Somewhere Out There, 1996.
  3:29pm Christian Schaal:

will the film screen in LA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm mrdonutsu:

Old school Dolby encoding boosts the high frequencies upon record and then attenuates them back down on playback. The recorded audio is returned to it's "flat" state, but the level of the high frequency tape hiss is reduced.
Avatar 3:35pm Re6ecca:

Like old times hearing Joe Frank on the radio <3
  3:37pm jess:

i love this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm brycepunk1:

I really love this. Every time I hear Joe Frank I'm caught wondering why I haven't sought out his library.
  3:40pm Mandy:

it was 3:40 when he said "it's always 3:40" nice
Avatar 3:40pm jaysit:

uh he just said "three-forty" at EXACTLY 3:40 eastern
  3:42pm Akiva:

Nothing makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time quite like Joe Frank does.
Avatar 3:42pm βrian:

Wait ... how *is* she getting home??
Avatar 3:43pm Fredericks:

I AM recording this special. Made the mistake of not recording the last Joe Frank special Irwin did and it vanished before I had a chance to capture it. Once bitten.
Avatar 3:43pm βrian:

I saw it in Madison last year.
Avatar 3:44pm anderonia:

This is so funny. Never knew his name, and he was floating around in my mind for decades. Jesus!
  3:44pm Mandy:

how long do we have to access this show? like can I hear some of it later on tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Webhamster Henry:

The music in that Three Shingles is:
"Isa Lei" by Ry Cooder and V. M. Bhatt from "A Meeting By The River"
In case you want to license it yourself.
Avatar 3:45pm βrian:

The showing was full, as I recall.
Avatar 3:45pm Fredericks:

or Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Alas, we also lost Ken Nordine this week (age 98).
Avatar 3:46pm V Priceless:

Steve Post shout out! Yay!
Swag For Life Member 3:46pm drew:

Do we get to hear any Ken Nordine today, given his passing?
Swag For Life Member 3:47pm drew:

Ken was faster on his keyboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Webhamster Henry:

@drew, check out Joe McGasko's archive from this past Monday Morning.
  3:47pm Brendan:

Joe’s humor is like a good martini. Bone dry.
Avatar 3:47pm Fredericks:

I don't know Mandy. That's why I am playing it safe. I already have quite a bit of Joe's stuff. But, I'm always open to more. Might come across something I don't have.
  3:48pm Listener Robert:

drew, Joe McGasko opened w a bunch of Ken Nordine this week.
Avatar 3:51pm ironybread:

I'd like to hear the story from Joe's side about the Scorsese movie "After Hours"
  3:51pm Van:

Is this film going to be out on DVD?
  3:52pm BigCait:

I had a friend in high school (mid 90s) introduce me to both Joe Frank AND WFMU. I am so thankful for that kid.
  3:53pm Laura L:

Very much looking forward to the film tonight--big thanks to Dave Carlson--and Joe of course--for making it.
Avatar 3:54pm AnAnonymousParty:

AFAIK, theses shows are archived forever and always available.
  3:54pm John from Florham Park:

@bigcat WFMU is well known in this area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Webhamster Henry:

Hit Man: In The Dark, 1994
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Ken Nordine set from Monday is here: www.wfmu.org...
  3:56pm Van:

Why did WFMU stop airing Joe's programs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Webhamster Henry:

@AnAnonymousParty generally true, but Irwins big tribute after he died omitted the Frank material for copyright reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Webhamster Henry:

You can buy Joe Frank shows from joefrank.com.
Avatar 3:58pm geezerette:

He really was breathtaking.
  3:59pm Listener Robert:

Van, I'm not sure this applies universally, but he explained on WFMU ~15 years ago (during or just before spring Marathon) that he could no longer produce new shows for air -- too restrictive FCC rules on content. But conditions must've improved.
  4:01pm Listener Robert:

Thanks to Ken Freedman for setting ALL THIS up!
  4:02pm Brendan:

@Van, I believe it may have been out of respect for Joe’s widow and estate. Joe incurred medical costs. All of Joe’s material is available for purchase on his website. I am not sure but the actual episodes may be in the archive, with the playlist references removed. Irwin can set the record straight though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Webhamster Henry:

If you bumped into him in the middle of the night - WNYC's AM ran it - it was extra intimate!
  4:05pm Van:

I heard they stopped airing on WFMU because of business reasons. They have a for purchase website.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm dale:

first time i heard this american life i thought 'this guy stole joe frank's schtick!'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm dale:

'chicken man - he's everywhere!'
Avatar 4:08pm geezerette:

This is a great conversation / interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Webhamster Henry:

National Lampoon also had a radio show.
  4:09pm Listener Robert:

I forgot the name of the guy who did the title character of Chicken Man, but he did a lot of funny radio ads and voice-overs and had a show on WNBC (IIRC) in the 1980s. The Time magazine ads come to mind.
  4:09pm Van:

Amazing that Irwin doesn't ask if the fil will be released onto DVD.Seems like an obvious question.
Avatar 4:10pm AnAnonymousParty:

Or Netflix.
  4:11pm Listener Robert:

One of the fun things about National Lampoon's Radio "Hour" was that it was the recording debut of Harold Ramis's Moe Green character. Joe Flaherty was Joe O'Flaherty then.
  4:13pm Brendan:

Joe could talk over bad smooth jazz and make it sound cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The film website: www.joefrankmovie.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Webhamster Henry:

I was much more influenced by the Firesign Theatre.
Too bad i didn't hear Negativland's Over the Edge live on the East Coast!
  4:13pm Listener Robert:

Henry, anything "in the middle of the night" on WNYC (AM) must've been after they switched to 820.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Webhamster Henry:

@Robert - yes .. WNYC didn't have license to broadcast after 10PM or something like that!
  4:15pm Van:

Dick Summers also a great storyteller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Michael 98145:

isn't that weird? i do remember when stations had to stop for the night ...
Avatar 4:18pm Fredericks:

I remember when we could loosen up on language restrictions after 10 pm.
Avatar 4:18pm Chud:

Jonathan Goldstein did an interview with Joe Frank for Believer magazine:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Webhamster Henry:

@Michael/Robert .. AM especially had the problem that it propagated really far at night and tended to interfere with other stations' footprints. Read my old WFMU LCD article on border radio! www.wfmu.org...
  4:20pm Van:

Joe had a hell of a s humor mixed with his great voice and material he remains unsurpassed.
  4:20pm sufferwords:

I got to ‘act’ in one of the Joe Frank short films- saw him the year before he died and mentioned to him that all i remembered was standing around a coffin- he remembered me and was eager in his praise of my ‘performance’ and for a moment i felt legendary being acknowledged by a true legend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Webhamster Henry:

Joe's audio deadpan just adds that extra WHAT AM I LISTENING TO? to all his drama.
  4:21pm Listener Robert:

Michael, 830 was WCCO, Minneapolis's clear channel. However, WNYC had special authorization, held over from World War 2, to stay on 2 hours after local sunset.
  4:22pm Brendan:

Ira just described my peeve w/ (some programs on) NPR and PBS. We’re going to tell you what we’re about to tell you, we’ll tell you, then we’ll tell you what we told you. Pre chewed food for thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm dale:

brendan - and the music we play will tell you how you should feel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Michael 98145:

NPR isn't quite as good as it thinks it is ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm G:

Nor its listeners
  4:33pm Brendan:

Although the NPR news team comported themselves well in the Anchorman street brawl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm dale:

joe sounds like rod mckuen here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Mike East:

First two hours of the program today will be archived, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Michael 98145:

( certainly hope so ... )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm ɨkɛ:

That "on trial for misogyny" segment is one of my least favorite Joe Frank episodes. It's self-indulgent. It almost reminds me (though it's much more skilled and has a sense of humor) of shitty self-published Christian sci-fi about a future liberal hellscape where the Christianity is BANNED! And if THEY catch you with a BIBLE, you'll be dragged away!!! Oh noes!

Of course "Three Shingles", OTOH, is mind-blowing and resplendent.
  4:46pm Listener Robert:

Of course it's self-indulgent. That's part of what made it so funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Webhamster Henry:

Dave Carlson: Did you record any phone calls with Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm coelacanth∅:

Ike, nooo - Joe Frank, self-indulgent?
  4:51pm Dr. Peter:

As a psychiatrist I enjoy the realism of the stories
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm coelacanth∅:

as a landscaper (amongst other things) i appreciate the honesty of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm ɨkɛ:

@LR, sure. I guess I just don't "get" that specific kind of humor. It strikes me a bordering on political, and Joe Frank is rarely that to me. It's an odd episode.
  4:54pm Brendan:

Thank you Dave and Irwin. Look forward to the film sometime soon and look back with fond remembrance of Wednesdays at 4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm dale:

as a housepainter i appreciate the eggshell finish.
  4:58pm Brendan:

As an accountant I depreciate them (using the double declining balance method). Bong hit anyone?
Avatar 4:59pm βrian:

Eggshell requires good rolling technique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm coelacanth∅:

ahh, nice. dry and honest with an eggshell finish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm coelacanth∅:

βrian, not during an equinox
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm coelacanth∅:

pass that bong?
Avatar 5:01pm βrian:

Nor in a zero-gravity environment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm ɨkɛ:

Whereas this episode's indulgence isn't so selfy. It's extraordinary and rich in outer indulgence.

Now I want to go to the Joyce Kilmer Service Area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm coelacanth∅:

so it's the old joyce kilmer service area trick.
Avatar 5:18pm Linda Lee:

what a love story.
Avatar 5:22pm Linda Lee:

Joe's art consists in creating my sense that i have a beautiful life. thank you Joe! :-)
Avatar 5:22pm Fox:

I'm so upset I'm missing the film tonight! I thought it was later, and just realized it was at 5:30. Drat!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm mrdonutsu:

Rainier Beer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It airs at 9:00, Fox. If you need tickets, they're available at the door starting at 5:30. I see that info on the film website (link posted 4:13).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm dale:

they had juggs back at that store, behind the knockers galore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Michael 98145:

whoa -
Avatar 5:32pm Fox:

Ken- ooooooh, thanks! I totally misread that whole announcement. Awesome!!! Maybe I have a chance to brave the weather and make it!!!
Avatar 5:33pm Fox:

Ken- I also, until today, had thought the film was showing at Monty Hall for both viewings, not in NYC, so I'm still not sure I'll make it, but at least I've got a chance!
Avatar 5:33pm Linda Lee:

without tenderness. told you ..
  5:35pm egould310:

I’ve been Joe Frank fan ever since I moved to Venice Beach in 1993. His work on KCRW was epic. Thank you so much for this retrospective, tribute, whatever. He was a great writer and artist.
  5:35pm sass2grass:

So tickets for the movie start at 5:30 BUT the movie isn’t until 9pm! Considering the weather outside, do you all think they will sell out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Michael 98145:

be careful what you eat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Tommy in Neversink:

This is one of my fav JF episodes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Tommy in Neversink:

Great show Irwin
Avatar 5:45pm MayJillar:

Oy vey. I'm so jealous of the the terrestrial radio listeners who get to see that movie soon. I can't wait for it to find its way to Nashville... or more realistically, Netflix or the like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good luck, Fox. Mine too, Tommy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Tommy in Neversink:

It's really quite funny
Avatar 5:47pm Linda Lee:

it is indeed.
