A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning cold world! great toyin ojih odutola show at the drawing center: go see it before it closes on sunday
  9:02am randyfrommichigan:

I love the artwork to the left
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am queems:

good morning trouble & all!
Avatar 9:05am TDK60:

Smart people tell me it's a "post-modern" world, Trouble, but I'll stick with your Modern one.
  9:07am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 I've never understood what post-modern meant ... I thought modern was about as modern as you could get
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am fred:

Good morning Trouble and all. Longing For The Past is a wonderful box set
  9:07am Peter in SEA:

Bon Jour Trouble and listeners, sunrise is at 7:36; when will the light come back?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Adrian in London:

Good day to everyone who knows the difference between weather and climate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, rising sea levels and retreating glaciers do not portend a downward overall temperature trend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am thatpatsmith:

good morning all in the cold hot world
Avatar 9:12am Sem:

Good morning, Trouble, and hello world of modern, and less-so, folk.
Avatar 9:14am TDK60:

randy, check the interwebs I guess. I'm not really up on it. // Thanks Adrian, we need some clearing up of definitions here in the States.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Trouble:

"this is the modern world" is from a song by The Jam
Avatar 9:15am jdaFromCologne:

hi all. today i am invisible. guess why?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am melinda:

morning Trouble and friends
Avatar 9:16am TDK60:

Trouble, didn't know you chose the title from The Jam album! Huh. In its context in '77 I figure it was telling the older rockers, and others, that a new generation of youth was expressing themselves! Yeh.
Avatar 9:18am TDK60:

...still have my "Modern" Jam LP too..
Avatar 9:19am Dances with Moomins:

Morning Trouble and all the lovers: moderne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am steveo:

hello Modern World; sigh
Avatar 9:22am Dances with Moomins:

the image! like, wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Trouble:

it's just a title; it has no heavy meaning
Avatar 9:25am TDK60:

Weller was clever enough not to sing "this is the post-modern world."
Avatar 9:25am jdaFromCologne:

i prefer postmodern jam(style coucil) :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Adrian in London:

@Troubke, speaking of The Jam, the book publisher Scott Pack, who lives in Eton, west of London, on Twitter said there is a shop in the town that sells rifles and it is called… wait for it… Eton Guns

@Trouble: The "booklet" for Longing For The Past is a hardcover book that must be well over 200 pages
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Trouble:

exactly@ fred: which is why it is separated in our tight quarters. it is also gorgeous
Avatar 9:46am TDK60:

Kevlicki: heading into IA today, either to help with next Aussie exhibit, or do scans. Happy trails down south!
Avatar 9:48am TDK60:

jdaFromCologne: ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Sounds cool, kevlicki. You can make some field recordings of some crickets. I heard a tornado struck Havana last week.
Avatar 9:51am βrian:

I'm amazed that birds are singing in this cold, but their song is bright and boisterous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am crateslinger:

When art got weird, they called it Modern due to a lack of imagination, then all of a sudden "Modern" art was fifty years old so they needed a new term. They should have just called it Contemporary while it was being produced and then eventually come up with something thoughtful, but who dare call the intelligentsia foolish.
Avatar 9:57am Sem:

Not quite enough cowbell. Otherwise, perfect. Go, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Phillippe Bastille:

You sound weirdly skippy at 91.1, as if you're a skipping record, but you sound fine on the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Ike:

Well, not really a *skipping* record exactly. It's hard to describe.

Ken from HP yeah a couple people were killed and portions of the city destroyed.
I hear the area we’re staying in is ok.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am zpulpa:

goodmorning Trouble and friends. I am iced over and quite sleepy but I am here.
  10:12am kevlicki:

Hi Michele!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Michele:

Hi Kevlicki! When do you leave on your trip?
  10:15am kevlicki:

Fly out tomorrow for 15days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am crateslinger:

The most distinctive aspect of the Modern Art era, as opposed to the Post-Modern era, or any other for that matter, is the fascination with the future. Think of 1950's consumerism and late 19th century Science Fiction. These things are now "Modern" forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Michele:

Wow! I just sent a little something to Laurels venmo, not much but hope it helps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Michele:

@ kevlicki - Venmo says they have to review my transaction - I bet they scan and saw the word Cuba. WTF.
Avatar 10:19am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning, Trouble and every troubled soul. This will be the best Thursday, Jan. 31 2019 in history!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Ike:

  10:20am kevlicki:

Michele, really?! Thank you so much!!! It all helps. We’re stressed about asking a holiday this year cos we’re going to be taking on more responsibility of the farm.
Hence reaching out to buddies for support in exchange for some art and shared stories.
That means a lot to me, thank you
  10:21am kevlicki:

Michele, oh dear how annoying
Avatar 10:21am TDK60:

I'm not well-read on post-modern ideas in art or philosophy. What I scoff at is arguments of folks I've met espousing it, that everything's all a senseless hall of mirrors = sounds like a bunch of hooey.
Avatar 10:25am TDK60:

..guess I need to brush up on some Foucault and Lacan, etc. // Kev, you need to get off the farm for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am crateslinger:

I don't know much either. These are just my thoughts. People say post-modern to claim some vision. I look forward to the Post-Ironic era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am sphere:

well, literary deconstruction is interesting but only for literary analysis. to me, it's way too easy to get lost in the theory and vanish into the ether.
  10:29am kevlicki:

K from HP der, i just processed that...right, crickets! The Yankees ears are very sensitive to them
Avatar 10:29am βrian:

Is Toad-in-the-Hole a modern construct? Cuz 5-year old kid says she likes toad-in-the-hole. (Nice and yolky.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Trouble:

we had something similarish totoad in the hole for breakfast this morning@brian: egg in a nest. we introduced our Peruvian exchange student to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am sphere:

toad-in-the-hole is probably pretty old. Wikipedia says early 18th century.
Avatar 10:34am TDK60:

..buckwheat cakes with walnuts here today.
  10:34am cee dubbles:

Lambchop flashback
Avatar 10:35am βrian:

Our version is just an egg cooked in a hole cut into a slice of good bread.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am crateslinger:

I may be alone in this but the fifteen minutes I spent walking to the train and then the fifteen minutes from the train to the office in 5 degree ten mph wind - I found exhilarating. It would suck standing around like waiting for a drug dealer or whatever but this weather is fine for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am sphere:

oh. Wikipedia was referring to a different English dish called "toad-in-the-hole" involving sausage. my bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am TomDash:

Hey Trouble just tuning in...funny I often put Curtis Mayfield Pandora mix on for our dog when we're out - it often starts with this track, so I thought I had put that on by mistake! Chloe (the dog) is loving the jams too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am crateslinger:

I used to make that for my kids when we went camping. Tear a hole in the bread, fry and egg in it. Called it Indian Toast. All due apologies. Now we make it at Boy Scouts. I suppose we need to call it something else. I'll run it by the council.
Avatar 10:38am TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am steveo:

but don't worry, some are sexist instead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Gavin in Bristol:

Wow. gardners question time are amazing! Just FYI for all u non-Brits; gardners question time is a live radio broadcast on BBC Radio 4 where regular gardeners get to ask questions to famous/celebrity gardeners. Don't know if 'celebrity gardening' is a thing over there but it sure is over here by Golly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am crateslinger:

maybe we'll go with egg hole bread
Avatar 10:50am βrian:

One difference might be that in the US, "garden" strong implies a vegetable garden unless otherwise specified. Is the show about growing food?
  10:50am morphe':

I am sensing Dr Who or Quatermass meets Nosferatu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am crateslinger:

John Paul Jones the American Sea Captain in the Rev War was the son of an 18th Century celebrity gardener. He was Scottish but was brought to England by some such Lord of something to get his yard up to snuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am tim from champaign:

@crateslinger - my partner calls them 'egg in a basket'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am steveo:

my favorite on the list is "bregg" which is apparently short for bread-egg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am crateslinger:

egg in a basket it is! Thanks tim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am crateslinger:

ooh bregg that's a tough one.
  10:54am randyfrommichigan:

@TomDash good suggestion re Curtis Mayfield Pandora mix - I just created a Curtis Mayfield radio on Spotify to see what comes up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Gavin in Bristol:

@βrian: Can be either and both!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am TomDash:

@Gavin in Bristol - yeah that track was great - I'll admit I googled it asap and came onto the BBC show (wasn't familiar) - looks like the band in question has just the one track on bandcamp? New to me and loved it! Great set vibes right now...
Avatar 10:55am βrian:

We have a garden in our front yard, which is a bit unusual on our area. Typically, people just have grass and flowers.

eggs in a nest. that's how i've know it for 50 years. and yes, using a cast iron skillet is the proper way to make them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am ifeelfatnsassy:

Egg in a frame. I feel like if it was done inside hash browns, then egg in a nest would make perfect sense.
  11:00am BEAVO:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am TomDash:

Drama is from Toronto
Avatar 11:01am Itzall Ablurr:

"Egg in the hole" pro tip: use a drinking glass or biscuit cutter for a nicer basket. On the bread, that is- get your mind out of the gutter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am The Oscar:

Busy working, but I have to throw in another vote for "toad in a hole." Though in our house it can change depending on which cookie cutter we use (eg. ghost in a hole, squirrel in a hole, snail in a hole...)
  11:01am Constant Smiles:

I have one that is a pancake with a hole in the center that you put an egg into and I call it a "Flying Saucer"!!
Swag For Life Member 11:01am bk845:

Put me down for "toad in a hole", not because I've ever had it, but I probably picked it up from reading Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett (so, English).
  11:01am Ven:

@Gavin ... Monty Don fan here!
Avatar 11:02am βrian:

Egg in a Nest is more descriptive, but I expect Calvin would go for the Toad thing.
  11:02am thor83:

egg in the hole also
  11:02am randyfrommichigan:

grew up in Toronto Canada, yes we made it and called it Toad In The Hole
  11:03am Earthling:

At home (Iceland) it was simply "egg in bread" - very literal. But in the UK it's One-Eyed-Jack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am ifeelfatnsassy:

+1 on using a glass for cutting the hole, then toast the cutout beside your cooking egg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Gavin in Bristol:

@Ven: Ha Ha. Welcome! @TomDash: Couldn't even find their bandcamp - a mysterious and enigmatic band/person!
  11:04am randyfrommichigan:

@ifeelfatnsassy same another +1
Avatar 11:04am glenn:

apparently toad in a hole is the american term for egg cooked in bread, in britain it's sausage cooked in yorkshire pudding.

I've always heard it called Toad in the Hole (but I don't recall ever actually having it, and would like to try it).

It's all I have steveo. I'm a rebel. When it comes to naming egg dishes. Other than that I'm pretty much an obsequious push over.

Eggs. Funny. Yesterday I spent a fair amount of time trying to explain the villain Egghead in Batman to my wife. Eggs again today. Ok.

My wife is also reading the M Obama book and likes it a good deal. She had me read the bit where Barack proposed. What...a...hoot... :)

Ven: great Scot Song: Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice(Hamish Imlack versions). BtB: you seem stuck on the cod liver oil theme for a few weeks now??? I has been known to "repeat on some people."

Thank you, Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am steveo:

@Ven the playlists aren't secure because there's no reason for it -- Chrome (and maybe other browsers) have been adding messaging to encourage site administrators to always use secure protocols (https). You'll see that if you go the homepage and click donate, you'll get the lock icon instead, because there it's important that you know who you're connected to.
