A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

baltimore is winning, so far...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Trouble:

i can't really get a text color that works with this helen rae piece. refresh to see my latest option. these are the things i can worry about when i play a long song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope the quiet loudness doesn't adversely affect my tinnitus. It's enjoyable so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Modern World residents.
Spiegel is the Modern World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Panda Penguin:

This is exactly the sort of thing my ears have been craving today. I think listening to this show for a while has now trained my brain to expect a certain type of music at this time on a Thursday...
Swag For Life Member 9:15am Flowers_For_Bokonon:

In the Palm of a Ghost is such a haunting, beautiful song. Perfect way to kick off my Thursday

Avatar 9:19am dan in wisconsin:

That piece of artwork is really nice. I like how the perspective changed once I saw all of the beach blankets on the shore of the water. Reminds me a little bit of Jean Michel Basquiat...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am EG_Astro:

Hello everyone. This song is amazing, and I love that painting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am melinda:

Avatar 9:49am βrian:

Bonjour, Trouble et auditeurs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Trouble:

@roberto: o no. won't hear from the remaining pile of schools until end of march/april. dj icepack is still unresolved with where he wants to go anyway. having a hard time walking away from that fave school of his...
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

We're looking at schools, too, but pre-schools. I honestly misread the monthly tuition cost as the yearly rate. Yikes!
Avatar 9:59am Roberto:

Oy. Sorry about that whole thing, Troubz. Even my wife, who's never listened to WFMU (willingly), feels bad about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Trouble:

@brian: the tuition struggle is real
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Trouble:

thanks for the kind words @roberto and family!
Avatar 10:04am βrian:

Thankfully, 5-year old will be in the public schools come fall. In the meantime, we'll be making the equivalent of a second mortgage payment every month.
Avatar 10:05am βrian:

@S_Rah: N'est-ce pas !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Webhamster Henry:

@Dances With Moomins: if this is what you are talking about, it looks like it's a 3d Moomin TV series:
Avatar 10:08am quinn:

@Brian, my 5-year old will be in public kindergarten in the fall and I cannot waaaaaait. Just as the littler one is enrolling in daycare/preschool.
Avatar 10:09am northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Trouble:

Avatar 10:40am βrian:

Si tu parles français, it's pretty easy to pickup. We hope to get 5-year Old into the dual language immersion program in the pubic school.
Avatar 10:44am northguineahills:

I speak Spanish better then most gringos, but my wife says I still have an accent (in my brain I think I have it down).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am steveo:

saw a guy walking with a cello this morning; maybe it was a kronos guy?
Avatar 10:48am βrian:

What, no Carolina Reapers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Blues Mandinga:

Hey! Hey! Hey! Everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am steveo:

hm nope kronos cellist is female
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Webhamster Henry:

That Ways Of Seeing / Advisory circle Album cover is real 1982-looking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am melinda:

I like poodles too, it's the topiary that makes them look ridiculous. I also like how they look like they're wearing fur pants when their legs haven't been trimmed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am melinda:

Similar effect on long-haired cats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am crateslinger:

Fun Fact - Poodles were originally cut that way so that their owners could benefit from the animal's body heat. Especially when the dog would curl up around the feet to keep warm themselves because all their hair had been cut off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am crateslinger:

and small lady's dogs were very helpful as hot water bottles.
Avatar 10:55am northguineahills:

@βrian: most Japanese food needs no heat (outside the 7 spices, that has become popular there in the last 30 years, and even that is mild). Almost every other cuisine, you know I'll add heat from my garden!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Passaic River Blues:

@Steveo: I wonder if it was that Erik Jacobson guy. He's a cellist who busks in stations throughout Brooklyn, and I've sometimes seen him in Manhattan. Really talented. Years ago, I had a terrible Court St. job downtown and Tuesday organ recitals at St. Ann's on Montague and Jacobson in the Borough Hall subway station were the week's only solace.
Avatar 10:56am jdaFromCologne:

of for today… have to checkout my old kronos cds sometimes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am crateslinger:

My daughter told me those dog facts just last night. I guess she saw a documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am melinda:

@Itzall sounds like a beautiful cat. My kitty Olive was a black medium-hair with nice fur pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am steveo:

@prb I found a picture, I don't think it was Jacobson (there are probably a few other cellists in nyc; i forget where i saw him, manhattan i guess)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am crateslinger:

I think it was the Roman's who did that to the poodle. Also little dogs
- there is a story about when a big tough Roman General came back from campaign and saw a rich woman with a little dog - he was like WTF?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am crateslinger:

@itzall - yeah man we evolved from the world around us. Crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am steveo:

(he wasn't playing, just walking around; might have been an empty case for all i know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am steveo:

organ recitals sound nice, i wonder if they still do them at st anns
Avatar 11:03am TDK60:

..there're lotsa cellists & bassists on the subway. A musician friend told me not to quip: "doncha wish you took up piccolo?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am crateslinger:

my friend plays guitar on the subway - says he has to do stand by me like twenty times a day.

I remember feeling weirded out when this song was featured in the movie "Shallow Hal"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am crateslinger:

It was interesting to hear today on Clay's show that the horse was made extinct in North America 8,000 years ago - by man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am crateslinger:

@itzall - did you try throwing it against the wall?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am steveo:

@tdk I usually pick on the double bass players, but only because i'm jealous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am sphere:

@northguineahills - what do you think of spice mixes like shichimi togarishi?
Avatar 11:18am northguineahills:

Wow, haven't heard that Kings of Convenience in forever....
Avatar 11:20am northguineahills:

@sphere: Ha! That's exactly what I'm using, it's nice for a tiny nip of spice and flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am coelacanth∅:

(happy birthday Bob Marley, belated)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Lewis:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am diciassette:

Isn’t shichi the on-yomi pronunciation if the kanji you’d use if you wanted to get a tattoo that says “tiny barbecue”?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Passaic River Blues:

Eternal thanks to Guido for the gift of this disc. I can't remember who aired it here first, but it's a delight every single time I hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am tim from champaign:

@Itzall Ablurr - I'd been curious about the Switched On Eugene record for a while. I really dug that song.
Avatar 11:43am northguineahills:

@diciassette: Shichi means 7 in Japanese, I'm no expert in Kanji, but I know hiragana, but I'd imagine it wouldn't take much to alter it in Kanji to mean something like bbq or grill (it's been years since I lived there, I differ to the our expert listeners).
Avatar 11:44am Itzall Ablurr:

Same, tim, another one I will probably buy after hearing it on Trouble's show. Thanks, Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am tim from champaign:

I was just thinking that too IA! Both about picking it up and thanking Trouble. Thanks as always for the great selection, Trouble!

“Ask a worm that’s about to turn”, I love that line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for a great show!!
Avatar 11:53am TDK60:

  11:53am cluebucket:

shichi-mi togarashi = literally 7-flavor chili pepper ... shichi-rin = literally 7 wheels, refers to the lil bbq grill (I think)
