A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good day Trouble. Darn, gotta leave for work, as the landlord still charges me rent, and the supermarket still charges me for food, and the subway ain't free, yet. There I go, gettin' all sociological this early.

Happy New Year, Trouble! What a beautiful first set for this snowy (Catskills) morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Webhamster Henry:

We have a pathetic dusting of snow here in Kingston; but this music goes with it nicely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am steveo:

Turku looks nice. Lots of bicycles.

I hope the sun will come out also, Trouble. Maybe this afternoon.

My new year's resolution is capital letters. Am I blabbering?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Linda Lee:

I'm happy with a dusting, myself. :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Granny Spicy Tuna:

i think it's a bit odd when the cover of a song sounds too derivative of the original. It might be fun for the performers, but, huh?

@Oscar that looks good, I like Kore-eda. Don't know if it will make an appearance in my town though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am The Oscar:

@melinda I definitely recommend it. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a Best Foreign Film nomination, which will hopefully expand its release a little bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Linda Lee:

very nice bacharach cover ~ though i'm hearing a different tune totally.
  10:11am blee:

Sing it, Chan.
Avatar 10:12am Dances with Moomins:

Hei @ The Oscar. I thought about going to see Shplifters a New Years Day but the subtitles would be in Finnish and it gets to be work if things go by quickly. Have heard good things about it. Saw "Roma" Mexican film the other day...powerful and moving and ultimately uplifting. cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am The Oscar:

@CWM Ahh I still need to see that! It's year-end-list season on the site I help manage, so I'm in my yearly stretch of frantically trying to catch up on everything I meant to see. It's on my agenda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am The Oscar:

Er, @DWM, not @CWM :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am melinda:

I watched Birthmarked on Netflix last night & thought it was good. On New Year's day I watched Day of the Dolphin, not sure what to expect. The talking dolphins seemed silly at first but by the end I'd bought into the concept and the farewell scene was really sad.
Avatar 10:32am PKNY:

Got an Amazon gift card over Xmas, and the first thing I dod was pick up the 79.5 album. So so so good, one of the million things that y'all at WFMU have turned me onto!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Linda Lee:

what a beautiful show so far!
thank you Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Passaic River Blues:

I love both the album and single versions of this song. These guys are incredible.
Avatar 10:35am PKNY:

@PRB - don't know if you or anyone else is up on it, but I found a video that's just the 3 singers of 79.5 running through some songs with only Fender Rhodes accompaniment --> www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am The Oscar:

I watched Mandy on New Years Day, which is *very* different from the other movies we've been talking about, but it was pretty much perfect viewing on a bleary New Years afternoon.
Avatar 10:36am Trouble:

i agree: 79.5 are the super best! i also love both of the versions of this song@prb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Passaic River Blues:

@PKNY: oh man, need to check that out! Thank you!
Avatar 10:43am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Mr. Robot on USA/ Amazon Prime is pretty choice. Saw Man in the High Castle and it was ok. Mr. Robot is a little bit like Lost, but with cooler themes. Man in the High Castle is going to jump the shark soon maybe. Thoughts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Mick:

Ooooh, thank you PKNY! Will watch that sometime after Trouble's show. Oh, and we went to see 'The Favourite' on New Year's Day, partly b/c of the convo here last week - very good i thought. Olivia Colman is *amazing*
Avatar 10:48am ranjit:

Trouble - is it ok if i advertise a performance tonight to your message boardies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am ɨkɛ:

Does season 3 of Mr. Robot go anywhere or have any purpose? Season 1 seemed like it was maybe going to go somewhere, but after that I started to feel like they were just jerking us around. It *does* remind me of Lost, but only in the worst ways.
Avatar 10:48am Trouble:

sure @ ranjit
Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

@WN: I read the Man in the High Castle a few years before the series, and although the show really extrapolates quite a bit (the book is maybe 150 pages), I still enjoy it. I haven't watched the most recent season of Mr Robot, But I enjoyed the first two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning and Happy New Year, Troublies. The sky is clearing from grey clouds to pleasant blue up here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Adrian in London:

The best thing I've seen recently is the five-and-a-quarter-hour Japanese film Happy Hour, from 2010, which is currently screening on Mubi UK. I finally got round to watching Wenders' Pina too, and I really like the TV show Bored to Death, which I picked up for a pittance on DVD.
Avatar 10:54am ranjit:

Thanks! Weird music fans, please come to BRIC tonight for a free performance from inside a big heap of electronic waste! www.bricartsmedia.org...
Avatar 10:55am ranjit:

(that's BRIC in downtown brooklyn near the academy of music)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am ɨkɛ:

@Ranjit, that sounds good! I'll try to make it.
  10:56am Peter Wyatt:

Mr Robot is a pretty entertaining show still, but it seems to turn into a conspiracy theory that China is plotting to take over the entire world, instead of focusing on the corporate criminals in the US. Gets a little ridiculous, but I'll still watch the last season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am melinda:

@Adrian I really liked Bored to Death too, I have a couple of DVDs of it left to watch. First watched it several years ago and was pleasantly surprised by the use of Young Marble Giants tunes.

Avatar 11:01am northguineahills:

@ranjit: Cool, Ed Bear is playing, he's an old friend of mine. I'd tell my wife to go, but she got back from Mexico at 3am, so, she'll probably sleep after work.
  11:01am Listener Robert:

Webhamster, is that Route 9W in the background of the newspaper photo? Just trying to orient.
Avatar 11:02am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@PW-yeah, its all "White Rose This" and "White Rose That"....like Elliot is her pet robot or something. Or she has time travel abilities. Or claims too. Wait, White Rose is a dude, right? Er um....what is the proper pronoun for White Rose? Isn't he a highly ranked man in the Chinese Gov't?
Avatar 11:03am fred:

I'm old enough to remember UB40's King from when I had this on LP. It's not often that WFMU premiums and my teenage records overlap
Avatar 11:04am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@PW-I'm kinda glad Mr. Robot showed that 5/9 also hurt homeowners who already paid off their mortgage. Kinda like better the devil you know than the one you don't know when it comes to E Corp. E Corp reminds me of Bank of America.
  11:05am Listener Robert:

Last night commenters were all about cursing up a storm (which would be great for Meghan) on the air when the FCC's off. But it's not like the FCC listens live. They take complaints from listeners later.
  11:06am Stephanie:

What a great reading! Thanks for playing it, Trouble. I heard that Zadie Smith used to sing jazzy lounge music when she was younger.
Avatar 11:07am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Adrian in London:

@Melinda Jonathan Ames was doing a reading in London with Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott, who wrote Swan Song (which is terrific). He was really funny in the reading; my wife has read two of his books and was laughing so much. Bored to Death is really sweet, it reminds me of Bakersfield PD, a great funny police series with Giancarlo Esposito.

  11:11am Listener Robert:

Looking via openstreetmap.org at Kingston in the area the parade was to end at, I see Wall St., Pearl St., John St., Maiden Ln. -- but then, weren't Kingston & Manhattan settled at about the same time?
Avatar 11:11am fred:

I like (not love) Zadie Smith. I haven't read Swing Time yet, but it's physically in my pile of unread books, so its time will come
  11:14am Peter Wyatt:

@Wild Neil -- yeah the WR character was interesting at first but its just over the top how one person has so much power over everyone. This "time travel" or whatever reveal better be damn good, like "wait three seasons to find out" good. :P But yeah, the series lost the punch when it stopped focusing on e-corp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Webhamster Henry:

@Listener Robert - Kingston is a little later, set up by Stuyvesant as "Wiltwyck", settled around 1654 . Those street names are the English names, not super creative ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am WillCrete:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Webhamster Henry:

@Listener Robert the bridge in the photo is indeed part of 9W.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Webhamster Henry:

Also, Henry, what does "BSP" stand for? The establishment's Web site under "About" doesn't seem to say. And please don't answer the way the band "DUH" used to answer about what DUH stood for!

BSP at this point may just stand for BSP, the way KFC stands fro KFC and not Kentucky Fried Chicken.
BSP is a fun venue, with lots of good acts passing through. WFMU's own Morricone Youth played there back in October.

Swag For Life Member 11:37am tadpoles:

There seems to be a bigger company called Backstage Productions which may be the reason why BSP has dropped that moniker, but my kids did Youth theatre there back in the day and that's what the name was then...morphing into more of a club later.
  11:37am Peter Wyatt:

Does anyone else feel that 2019 is going to be a great year overall? As in we might make progress to avert climate chaos and things will turn relatively more peaceful? Something seemed different on Jan. 1st.
Avatar 11:39am Trouble:

hoping so @ peter wyatt
  11:39am Listener Robert:

I just looked at the Wikipedia entry for DUH, and I was pretty sure the one I remembered was from the 1980s, being interviewed on Pat Duncan's show, or maybe Frank O'Toole's, where when they were asked, "What does `DUH' stand for?" they'd answer, "Mostly, it's political. We stand for...." etc. So not this ad hoc thing from 1990. But then, my memory could be way off.

@Wild Neil --- hahah, it will probably end up being something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am The Oscar:

There's a great clip of the Honeycombs on Youtube, from one of those odd "Here's a bunch of bands on a soundstage" films from the '60s. I caught it on TCM a few years ago, and their performance made my jaw drop (despite the... unfortunate presence of Jimmy Savile introducing).
