Phil & Mimi swing by the studio this week with a slew of fave-rave '45 singles, ranging from wacky novelty instrumentals to psychedelic sunshine pop numbers to super schlager songs to groovy French pop & Mod gems. Montreal radio legends, Flipped Out Phil hosted the beloved 60’s garage rock radio show The Subterranean Jungle (1985-1999) on McGill’s CKUT, while Mimi hosted Dans le garage (1995-1999) on Université de Montréal’s CISM, as well as Dodécaphonique Twist (2000-2003) and Mondo PQ (2011-2013) on CIBL. Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Otis Fodder:

Expect a tablespoon of schlager and a cup of smashing-time-singles!
Avatar 3:02pm Katya Oddio:

HA! Only hearing the shows through automated downloads, I thought FP was on BEFORE F+F! Catching part of both shows today. Fun!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Otis Fodder:

It's Mimi! Phil cannot join us live today but he sends a groovy greeting to you all!
Avatar 3:03pm DJ Swankenstein:

I got the Portland version of this via Uncle Michael!
Avatar 3:06pm Mr Fab:

Wow, there's a guy named DJ Swankenstein, do you actually Dj around somewhere?
Avatar 3:06pm DJ Swankenstein:

Yes! Thanks for the link for Flipped Out!
  3:10pm Mimi:

Oops, that was me. Getting the hang of this chatting thing. :)
  3:10pm Mark in Toronto:

Greetings to Phil in/of Toronto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Otis Fodder:

The first show of.... The Pink Pussycat. A hidden away speakeasy room in Sheena's Jungle Room where the low-fi mics bump up against dusty 7" singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Pink pussycat!!
Avatar 3:14pm DJ Swankenstein:

Hey Mr Fab... do you do the Music For Maniacs Blog? I LOVE that page!!
  3:14pm Mimi:

The song definitely implied him being stoned and tripping.
Avatar 3:15pm Mr Fab:

That was indeed my blog, which came to a screeching halt once I started planning this station! Thanks for the niceness!
  3:15pm Martinibomb:

I just started watching 77 Sunset Strip! It's kinda different from a lot of other detective shows. Such a different vibe. I never had the opportunity to watch it until a few months ago.
Avatar 3:17pm DJ Swankenstein:

any "niceness" is COMPLETELY deserved, sir. You did a fantastic job and filled my mp3 player many times over with your stuff, :)
Avatar 3:17pm Mr Fab:

Hey, nice to see Glynis here from elsewhere in the WFMU universe. she's got a great show, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Otis Fodder:

Music for Maniacs turned me on to many sounds as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Glynis, so nice to see you here for the fun!
Avatar 3:19pm Katya Oddio:

Wanda Jackson is a fantastic lady. We had such fun hanging with her. Down to Earth and funny!

How's everyone?
  3:25pm Mimi:

Hi everyone, hi Glynis! :)
Avatar 3:27pm Archivist Vivian:

Hello Mimi!
Avatar 3:28pm Archivist Vivian:

I really like this song, the structure almost reminds me of a faster paced, more poppy version of The Daisy Chain. Maybe that's a weird comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Otis Fodder:

It was a bit like Daisy Chain, love that Sundazed reissue. Now it's time for Mimi's Rosko 7" single I am gushing over (want want want).
  3:34pm Mimi:

Hipper than the Big Dipper!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Webhamster Henry:

Rosko was on WBAI for a while.
Avatar 3:35pm Archivist Vivian:

Did any of you ever hear the Nora Guthrie Single Emily's Illness b/w Home Before Dark? I just sent it to a friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Otis Fodder:

If memory recalls, Nora Guthrie was comped on one of Arf Arf's Only In America comps.
Avatar 3:38pm Archivist Vivian:

That's where I first heard it. I fell in love. I've done it live before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Webhamster Henry:

The same "we need a touring band" problem happened with "Popcorn" and "Timothy".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Otis Fodder:

With Hot Butter, ha, did not know that. Seems like it happened quite often.
Avatar 3:41pm DJ Swankenstein:

loooooove The T-Bones. You must hear their version of the Stones Satisfacton. Super Fuzzy guitar.
Avatar 3:43pm Archivist Vivian:

The Hot Butter album has some gems on it. In my opinion, their version of "Telstar" and "Apache" is even better than their version of Popcorn, and I love that version - But my favourite version of Popcorn is the 1988 MH Band one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Otis Fodder:

I think it's the time of the month again to promote wfmu's popcorn post! blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Otis Fodder:

Oh Phil. You had me at Sidewinder. Love this cut!!
Avatar 3:46pm Archivist Vivian:

There's a great video out there of some french guy playing Popcorn with his face.
He hits his teeth with his fingers, slaps his cheeks and lips, and even uses his head and ears.
Avatar 3:46pm Archivist Vivian:

www.youtube.com... Here it is. There's one other video of him online, but I wish there was more.

If these DJs don't start speaking French right now, I'm going to demand my money back! Oui, 'allo!

Avatar 3:55pm Archivist Vivian:

I love that name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Mike Sin:

Good to hear that Philthy Phil is still living up to his reputation!
  3:57pm Mimi:

Chicks go crazy for little Alakazam jam.
  4:06pm Martinibomb:

Hadn't heard that Adam & Eve track.. going into my halloween 2019 playlist
  4:07pm Mimi:

Yes, it's amazing! The album is the one you see on the photo of Phil and I.
Avatar 4:07pm Mr Fab:

Yep, I clicky starred that tune.
  4:08pm Martinibomb:

I love songs about witches too! Always got my evil eye on the look out
  4:09pm Mimi:

Look also for Janie Jones' Witch in White. Same song, good version. This one is better though (imo).
Avatar 4:09pm Mr Fab:

that's fascinating about Jamie Jones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Otis Fodder:

Mimi, we will have to have you on a again for a witchy show.
  4:10pm Mimi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Still here! Nursing a headache hence my silence. But enjoying the show.
Avatar 4:15pm Mr Fab:

I've wondered if all those witchy/devil/evil woman songs from that period were some kind of anti-women's lib reaction.
  4:19pm Mimi:

Yes! witches - who were only women practicing paganism, which was considered evil by Christianity - have been demonized and shamed forever. Many women consider witchcraft as being part of feminist values. Abso-freaking-lutly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Otis Fodder:

"Fuzz Blaster" - will have to add that to my vocab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Otis Fodder:

I will probably be playing this entire Michel Pagliaro album on future shows. Thanks Mimi... favorite!
  4:31pm Mimi:

Michel Pagliaro's "orange" LP. National treasure <3
  4:35pm Mimi:

Paul Daraiche, Les Loup Blanc's singer, is the well-know country singer today, not their producer, is what I should've said. #oops
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Mike Sin:

Are the Beatnick, Primitive, and Le Pick Up stores still in operation up there in Mount Royal?
  4:37pm Mimi:

Primitive no, Beatnik + Pick Up yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Otis Fodder:

Primitive is no more, Eduardo opened a shop Sonorama in the Mile-end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Otis Fodder:

Pick Up moved over to Roy, round the corner from Beatnick (still at the same spot).
Avatar 4:38pm DJ Swankenstein:

A Moe Koffman Tittyshaker. NICE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Otis Fodder:

This Moe Koffman 7" has been on my wantlist forever and a day, month, year. Still look in the bins for it. Go Flipped Out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Dutchman Jan:

Hi, I'm back again... by the looks and sounds of it, I certainly must listen the archive tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

My cousin was a jazz hound, we’d go see Moe when I was a kid and ask for the crazy stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Rich in Washington:

That's wonderful. So weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Otis Fodder:

Jan - just in time for Moe Koffman (speaking of flute gurus).
Avatar 4:40pm DJ Swankenstein:

I have it on this comp... but the 45 would be super fab. www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Dutchman Jan:

That was the wolga song a few minutes ago, wasn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Otis Fodder:

Jan - Yes, but little to no flute, it's an early Moe Koffman 45 gem - www.youtube.com...

Love that you saw Moe as a kid Glynis!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Rich in Washington:

I need to see that Joe Meek biopic again. I remember just sort of half-heartedly watching it while doing some kind of tedious work, and it just being him screaming a lot.
Avatar 4:44pm DJ Swankenstein:

Hey Glynis... Did you go to see Moe at Georges Spaghetti house back in the day? I think he became the booking guy for bands there too later.
  4:45pm Mimi:

I have never seen that biopic, thank you for reminding me! So hard to find though.
Avatar 4:45pm Mr Fab:

yeah it never played here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Swank, yep! That’s where we’d go
Avatar 4:48pm DJ Swankenstein:

I probably ran into you there a few times. :)
  4:52pm Mimi:

Avatar 4:54pm DJ Swankenstein:

Mimi.... Is this what you are looking for? www.youtube.com...
  4:55pm Mimi:

YES! OMG thank you! Never think to look on YT haha! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Rich in Washington:

That's it DJ Swankenstein! Thanks! I will watch it again tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Otis Fodder:

Another thanks Swankenstein!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Dutchman Jan:

ah, a solid flute solo! :)
Avatar 4:57pm DJ Swankenstein:

Enjoy... It's likely not a legit upload, so will probably get taken down. But it seems you can rent from the Google store for a buck or so also.
Avatar 4:57pm Mr Fab:

Wow, thanks for that link, will be watching that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Rich in Washington:

I dreamt I was watching a really long biopic on Charles Nelson Reilly. I wish it was real, even though it seemed like I was being tortured with it in the dream.
Avatar 4:59pm Mr Fab:

thats hilarious Rich. Who would play him in a biopic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Rich in Washington:

good question! I remember in the dream thinking 'why was this film made?'
A disproportionately large amount of my dreams are me watching things on TV. I grew up in the 70s. What more can I say?
Avatar 5:03pm Mr Fab:

how the hell did a guy like Serge get someone like BB? Single guys, take heart!

I mean, i love Serge G's music, but c'mon, look at the guy...
Avatar 5:06pm DJ Swankenstein:

Fab show y'all... Gotta hit the subway for the commute home.

  5:09pm Mimi:

Thank you for listening DJ Swankenstein!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Rich in Washington:

This show is a great soundtrack to me finally getting around to reshelving all the records that are strewn around my studio area. I forgot how messy doing a show at home could get. Sheesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Great show, lovelies - heading for bed :-)
  5:13pm Mimi:

Thanks for listening, night! :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Otis Fodder:

Thanks for tuning in Mike! Cheers!

In case you wondered, Phil is also a voice-over actor. :-) It's great to go to the movies or watch TV sometimes and randomly hear his voice in commercials.
