We have Aldi in the U.S. too but ours are a tiny bit more downmarket than the German version, I think. Like an attempt at a blue-collar Trader Joe's. TJ's attempts more of a "discount gourmet" and is better. Not all of it works, but it's usually cheap enough that it's worth trying.

Also, great sounds!
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
northguineahills:

@βrian: I don't hit the TJ's here, as it's in the suburban part of town, and there's a good organic supermarket near my home. But, I do miss their vegan chorizo (better then the real thing, and I'm an omnivore).

There's an Aldi here too, just haven't visited yet, I prefer to shop locally owned businesses (when possible).
  12:35pm
Garden Variety Lurker:

Trader Joe's and Aldi started from the same company. It may have been brothers who split up over something but I might have dreamt that part.
Avatar 12:36pm
jdaFromCologne:

aldi (over here) is "locally - basically everywhere. :-) TJ was - as far as i remember from nyc - not too bad, lots of precooked food u could take home. we dont have that here…
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Cmurtha:

That's right Garden. It was over selling cigs. I do almost all my shopping in Columbus at Aldis/Costco. I give Aldis a big thumbs up. Trader Joes - thumbs up if you want certain things, but it may just be the ones in Manhattan are not up to par as they didn't win me over.
  12:38pm
Garden Variety Lurker:

I guess it was over selling cigarettes... https://slate.com/culture/2013/12/aldi-grocery-store-best-in-america-related-to-trader-joes.html

βrian:

Haven't been to an Aldi yet. We have one but it's on the OTHER side of the isthmus. We're kind of stuck with the Food Whole which has gotten a little shabby, of late.
Avatar 12:39pm
jdaFromCologne:

alsi are 2 brothers… thats why we have aldi north (germany) and aldo south (germany). but they sell mainly the same stuff, one of them bought TJ years ago… since we have LIDL as well, both try to upgrade their markets…
Avatar 12:41pm
jdaFromCologne:

enough for today. getting hungry. see ya next time.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Cmurtha:

The aldis in the U.S have been updating their stores to have more refrigerator space/nicer interiors. LIDL I think are just starting to come over to the U.S. Here is hoping the Germans can drive the Waldens into bankruptcy.

We have a bunch of Aldis in Western NY. Some are better than others, even with or without the updates. Lots of organic foods in all of them. Some are just better.
I heard Lidl sucks. At least in Poland they do. In Poland, Leclerc is where its at. Here we have Wegmans which is expensive like Vons in CA.
