Hi Olivia, hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Passaic River Blues:

@NGH: hahaha OK, I have to sheepishly and hypocritically admit I had the first record from '94 or '95 and did enjoy the cloying sweetness of it ("Drum Machine Joy" was on it, I think). Over the years, I occasionally dipped my toe back in the water and checked out later stuff online but just couldn't ever get into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm sphere:

There's that Kevin Ayers album Joy of a Toy.

Soup recipes, don't get me started, quinn. Even in the middle of a Floridian summer, I'm making soups from scratch! (I'm a soup junky).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm olivia:

hi everyone!

yea quinn - the youtube yoga-er Adriene, not our own Adriene!
Avatar 1:04pm βrian:

I make one particular "fancy" soup that has a really smooth, rich consistency: roasted corn bisque. Lots of cumin and a little cayenne to give it a boost. Finished with cilantro and heavy cream. The New Year's version includes smoked salmon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm sphere:

Big Mama is not related to Hypnotoad, of course she isn't. Of course....
Avatar 1:07pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

My wife makes a really good roasted carrot soup with ginger. It is REALLY carrot-y and filling. Wow. Perfect for this time of year.
Avatar 1:07pm Chris from DC:

I approve of this year's mascot.
Avatar 🍝 1:07pm quinn:

oh i'm verrrrry familiar with youtube yoga-er Adriene. my soups on rotation are the ribollita, black lentil soup & the curried coconut red lentil soup from 101cookbooks. check em out. last night we made black bean pumpkin soup and that was also good. soup is the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Webhamster Henry:

It's a good day for squash-based soups!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm northguineahills:

@βrian y WN: Go on.... (WFMU is now officially my personal culinary fetish site....[I take food seriously, but only prepping, cooking, and imbibing...])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm northguineahills:

Unless in a pool, I wouldn't suggest swimming in (the Bay of) Bengal.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm northguineahills:

damn, my butternut squash recently died, and I've already used all of the fruit...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU needs a cooking show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm northguineahills:

When cooking a dish for the first time, I look up a dozen recipes, and average the ratios in my head (and to my tastes). After about 4-5 times if I master it, I can do it by heart.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm tim from champaign:

Butternut squash and pear soup with a dash of cream is deeelicious.
Avatar 1:18pm still b/p:

I think...baking shows are well represented in the schedule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm crateslinger:

We do talk about food a lot here it's true. I had pizza for lunch. And wings. And a Stewart's Black Cherry. Barely awake now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm sphere:

@Chris from DC - Did you hear about the Positive Force gig on Sunday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm crateslinger:

What kind of food show would belong on WFMU? Made up recipes like 7SD last night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm crateslinger:

Speaking of ravioli. Home made spinach and flour ravioli stuffed with ricotta is the greatest food in the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm sphere:

Ian MacKaye, Amy Farina, and Joe Lally are emerging out of the shadows and playing at St. Stephens.
Avatar 1:28pm Chris from DC:

Wow the word spread on that show fast,
Avatar 1:29pm Chris from DC:

Yeah, apparently they've been working on this for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm sphere:

yeah from what I see, DC thinks it's a big deal.
Avatar 1:30pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Crateslinger-you transport artwork, right?
Avatar 1:30pm βrian:

Since it's fall, tarragon is back in my lineup of "flavorizers," mostly in marinades.

I love this Thursday afternoon block of shows. Olivia followed by Fabio is perfect for my tastes.
Avatar 1:31pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Food in Poland is really really really good. It is so good I ate gluten, I just did not care!
Avatar 1:32pm Chris from DC:

@Sphere it made Pitchfork, amusingly enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm olivia:

thanks, joe Ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm crateslinger:

Wild Neil - I build the crates in which art is transported. I stay away from the shipping end of things. Why?
Avatar 1:40pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Did you ever see those really cool crates that fold up into flat slats? They stack like legos sort of and the banding holds it all together. I wish I could invent something like that and make a million and buy a house in Poland.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 1:40pm tim from champaign:

To appropriate X Ray Burns... Polish food will mess you up bad! There's a Polish buffet in Chicago called Re Apple Buffet. On of my favorite places in the world. It is sooo good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm sphere:

@Chris from DC - I'm not surprised. Ian MacKaye is a still a Sacred Name in some circles. :)
  1:41pm JakeGould:

@WildNeil: Come up with a blintz folder.
Avatar 1:44pm still b/p:

Blintz Folder...good media name. Wolf Blitzer's rival, Blintz Folder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm sphere:

Blintz Folder sounds like a member of the Residents (pace Hardy).
Avatar 1:46pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Inventing stuff is really, really, really REALLY hard. Try it some time, I did , it was a gigantic effort with zero payoff, except for the experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm crateslinger:

Yeah, they're called lift vans and they clip together with wire brackets - only used for warehouse storage tho - but you can stack them to the sky. The problem with building a reusable unit for shipping is that every artwork is a custom job. Otherwise you're paying dearly to ship empty interior space.
  1:47pm JakeGould:

@crateslinger: WFMU food show? “Just Order Pizza”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm crateslinger:

Ordering pizza is good for you and me here in Brooklyn, but what about everybody else that can't get pizza and has never had it?
Avatar 1:51pm Davee:

Enjoying your show Olivia!!!
  1:51pm JakeGould:

@crateslinger: Just starve.
  1:51pm JakeGould:

Wait! That is the WFMU show: “Just Starve”
Avatar 1:52pm Davee:

I'm hungry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm crateslinger:

I want to make a tattoo of a buffalo chicken wing taking flight with slices of pizza for actual wings.
Avatar 1:54pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I had a bag of popcorn for desert. Chicken salad sandwich for lunch. Carrot for snack. And tangerines. Yum.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 1:55pm tim from champaign:

This arrangement is really good! I love the original too. This should be put out as a 45 with a cover of It's Alright as the b-side
Avatar 1:55pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@crateslinger-you could make it look like a B2 bomber or an F-16 or something. You area probably thinking "bird" though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm crateslinger:

That's been my lunch every day this week. Wings and pizza. Life is so perfect sometimes. Place down the street is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm zpulpa:

I feel like this background music will sound really special when its snowy out....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm crateslinger:

I'm thinking just a lumpy chicken wing - like the drumstick looking one with the one bone, not the two bone one - and two slices of pizza flapping over the shoulders like it's taking off before I eat all of it.
Avatar 1:57pm βrian:

Pizza or tomato pie? Which?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Passaic River Blues:

@crateslinger: "Pizza Wings" is an absurdly beautiful concept. You are a genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm crateslinger:

Thank you PRB - that's actually what I call it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm sphere:

the first time i heard of a "tomato pie" rather than a pizza was on one of those Food Network shows.
  2:00pm prudy:

thanks for playing Lonnie Holley. Love this record!
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Mick:

Tomato pie is different from pizza though, isn't it? No cheese. @Brian, are you willing to share that roasted corn bisque recipe?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm crateslinger:

Brattleboro is a weird place. So much drugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm zpulpa:

@ crateslinger, true, very troubling. some nice people in the area, and yeah, lots of pain up there lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm crateslinger:

and violence! Vermont is not supposed to be a violent drug dungeon but Brattleboro is a good place to get thrown through a window by a cocaine dealer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm zpulpa:

its creepy, I went to school near there and felt a strong sense of urgency to get OUT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm crateslinger:

I grew up in the area. We used to go to VT to buy beer in the 80's but now it's like a dark suburb of Cincinatti or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm crateslinger:

More like Dayton I guess.
Avatar 2:16pm βrian:

Nothing's is written down, but I got the overview from a chef I worked with years ago. He just came up with it one day.

In a large cast-iron skillet or roasting pan, roast corn that's been dressed lightly with olive oil and (ideally, fresh) rosemary. When it's nice and caramelized, dump it in a large pot with stock/water and a few potatoes. Season with lots of cumin and a bit of cayenne. (The pique of the cayenne will diminish when you finish.) Salt to taste. Simmer for a good long while. Puree, and pass through a fine strainer/chinois. Finish with heavy cream, then puree cilantro into a portion that you mix back in.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Barney Grubbs:

when I lived in Lebanon, NH, I always used to like stopping in Brattleboro for beer at McNeill's and record stores on the way to/from home, but I could imagine it being a weird place to live
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm crateslinger:

I know McNeill's and there was a place nearby called the Weathervane, but I think the cops or the town actually closed it.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Barney Grubbs:

I haven't lived up there for almost 10 years--things have probably changed a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm crateslinger:

There's actually a large well-known mental hospital in town and a lot of people who get released from there stick around, then there's the summer camping gutter punk travelers, and then you've got the junkies and the cocaine and even meth now. People sleep down along the train tracks along the river and stab each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm crateslinger:

Anyways, I talk too much. Love this show. I'm glad you're on the air Olivia. My kind of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm crateslinger:

One more thing re:Vermont. The guy in the pic for Grape Room from zpulpa's band camp link @2:09 looks like my kind of Vermonter the way I remember it, the way it should be - you're either a Lumberjack or a freek (or an underage kid from Massachusetts).
  2:29pm PERSONATOR from Highland Park NJ:

There go some of my romantic notions of Vermont! Are Burlington and Barre nice places to live, at least?
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm The Oscar:

Every time this song comes on I'm shocked to realize it's not some 40-year-old private press gem dug up by Numero.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Mick:

Thanks Brian, sounds fantastic! And thanks Olivia: the show has been fab as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm crateslinger:

Burlington might as well be Tribeca for all the New Yorkers. There's lots of nice places in Vermont and New England in general, but you want to stay out of the old mill towns. Basically any town with old brick buildings on the Connecticut River you want to stay away from.
  2:42pm Polyus:

Quite Opal-esque, this Angel Olsen.
  2:44pm prudy:

what's wrong with old mill towns?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Switchblade Batman:

Why's that @Crateslinger?
  2:47pm prudy:

some of my ancestors spent a lot of time in old mill towns
  2:55pm brainiac:

This was a very calming set, which is just what I needed today. Namaste, Olivia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm zpulpa:

thank you so much olivia, I really needed this wash of sound to remind me of more subtle movements and changes.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 2:58pm chris:

thanks, Olivia! great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm steveo:

thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm crateslinger:

They're not mill towns anymore and unless they are stops on the antiquers highway then most old mill towns in central New England seem to me largely drug-riddled ghost towns. Pittsfield, Worcester, Springfield, Holyoke, Brattleboro. I'm being anectotal and maybe a bit facetious, but I stand by this. My family is still up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Olivia!
