I like past futurism as now experienced in the future! That's where we are going to spend the rest of our lives. <tm Criswell>

But can the frog play an instrument like Moondog?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

So close to having a techtoad as mascot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Webhamster Henry:

I just saw Escape From New York, set in the Future (1997), and one of the plot points is that Snake Plisskin gets a pair of exploding, dissolving RFID-like devices injected in his head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm ultradamno:

"Surveillance Capitalism" there's a phrase to put chills down your spine.
  6:16pm melinda:

I heard in an interview recently that Jair Bolsonaro illegally paid companies to spread fake news through What's App and it helped him win. Grim.
Avatar 6:17pm TDK60:

Why does that corp. need a 2nd office? growth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The irritating part of the PBS doc was Facebook's response. They basically shrugged their shoulders at every turn and said they planned to "do better" in the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

More company for queems on the 7 train each morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm ultradamno:

"We'll do better in the future" is the new "fuck you".
Avatar 6:21pm TDK60:

West Village? Ha. That'll be so quaint.
  6:22pm Robert Tables:

@Ken, ultradamno: Facebook's responses annoyed me as well.

Mr. Waltzman's interview was my favorite part of that first hour. I'm still planning to watch hour 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm chresti:

Los Angeles is considered too expensive for Amazon workers
  6:23pm bore:

you're going to have to add Disney to your tech corporations list soon
Avatar 6:24pm geezerette:

Goodbye freedom, nice knowing you.
Avatar 6:25pm TDK60:

..gosh, could that happen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm coelacanth∅:

this doesn't sound like a novel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm ultradamno:

Future, you say?
  6:25pm Coleusound:

naaah that'll never happen... sent from mobile
Avatar 6:27pm βrian:

Remember back when the future was utopian?
  6:27pm herb.nyc:

FEED novel? I read a book review 3,4 wks ago of a dystopian bk and it said people were getting nutrition from the glare of a computer screen (or something like that). Scary. Same book?
  6:28pm Serpent Strike:

Hmmm..... The future will likely be less utopian and more dystopian, the way that all these link nyc kiosks keep popping up around New York city.
  6:28pm Coleusound:

omg don't give them ideas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm coelacanth∅:

okay it's a novel! interesting idea.

Avatar 6:30pm geezerette:

Please, someone, convince me the game's not over.
  6:30pm P-90:

Pretty good for 2002. Then again, it does sound like it derives from a cyberpunk tradition that goes all the way back, past Gibson, past Brunner, to the 1967 movie "The President's Analyst"...
  6:30pm Serpent Strike:

Better utopian than dystopian
  6:30pm Serpent Strike:

The moon does not suck
Avatar 6:30pm TDK60:

Just in the last 4 or 5 years, many folks I encounter round town seem like brainwashed zombies, almost; face in a screen.
Avatar 6:31pm βrian:

Oh, no! Not reference as a verb!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm ultradamno:

I think utopian at this point is a novel where a few people survive to see 2070
  6:32pm Serpent Strike:

Yep. Today I saw 19/29 people on my way to school that were on their phone or electronic. They are like zombies that post on social media
Avatar 6:32pm northguineahills:

Violet? a reboot of the Boxcar Children?
Avatar 6:33pm geezerette:

Data is not information. It's static.
  6:33pm Serpent Strike:

For proof that the moon does not suck, read What If? by Randal Munroe
  6:33pm Coleusound:

is there clockwork orange slang in this book? this is important to me in my distopic content

Avatar 6:34pm Fox:

There's social cost to not having FB as a forty-something. My exbf cancelled his fb, and he never gets invited to ANY social events whatsoever. That's how all the invitations go out these days. I know a number of people who keep an account just so they can stay connected to their social lives.
Avatar 6:35pm βrian:

@geezerette: Unless you get your bits flipped. That's no fun.
Avatar 6:36pm geezerette:

Avatar 6:39pm northguineahills:

@Fox: True, I only have a handful of friends in my new town, and the once a week when I check FB is when I find invites for gallery openings/concerts/dance parties happen (early 40s).

Ach, forget I asked.
Avatar 6:43pm TDK60:

I don't knock communication; being manipulated tecno-socially-politically, I do.
Avatar 6:44pm geezerette:

I used to read WIRED with a mixture of dread and fascination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm queems:

Avatar 6:49pm βrian:

So, wait. You implant the chip every day, then remove it 8 hours later ...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm ultradamno:

If we don't have an artificial sky what will they display the images of the tributes that have died over the course of the day on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Webhamster Henry:

More Uncanny Valley: lyrebird.ai is getting somewhat better at voice synthesis.
  6:49pm SerpentStrike:

It does not
Avatar 6:50pm northguineahills:

They've been talking about solar reflection geocenthric satellites to help arctic communities to have more sunlight during the winter, for over a decade now...
Avatar 6:50pm geezerette:

I like chocolate chips, potato chips.

Avatar 6:53pm northguineahills:

@coel: Is that pronounced like Sun O)))
Avatar 6:54pm Neckbard:

Well, any sociality so lazily and impersonally transacted is not worth it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm chresti:

What I see are stressed out people that share houses/apartments with 4 or 5 people while working 10 hr+ days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm ultradamno:

I guess that means we're losing the Listening Party as well, that sucks
Avatar 6:57pm Bas NL:

Thanks Mark & M.T.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm melinda:

@Neckbard I don't agree, it really depends on one's circumstances. Social contact, even through social media, is a health necessity.
Avatar 6:58pm TDK60:

chresti: I see that too, folks on the train exhausted, stressed. the working class.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Mark!
