"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Are you having to restrain Clay from singing over this Foghat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am mb:

I'm here with you DJ John Allen

hullo all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Listening to Rolnick on a Friday morning is also an admirable goal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am steveo:

morning! i'm gonna tell my mama that was a satisfying segue.
Avatar 9:07am Lixiviated Life:

Did they have to hose down the studio after the
I think I'm gonna need another coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am karlward:

I met JA in the PM the other day. There was a faintly audible sound, possibly Rolnick, just within earshot, like the scent of sandalwood in a 4000 year old temple. You know, a typical Tuesday night.
Avatar 9:13am John Allen:

hey thanks everyone!!! Rolnick yardstick to rap the knuckles now..

I met JA at the last (non-mini) record fair, unless that was another guy named John sitting in his booth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am jmr3:

well, that was a harsh transition
Avatar 9:25am Roberto:

clay just want is to make love to you?
Avatar 9:33am Rev. Turnip Druid:

i can has friday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am MikeG:

I still have a Pigeon/Garbage hangover... sheesh
Avatar 9:41am Rich in Bay Ridge:

This reminds me somewhat of that Tom Johnson chord catalog piece from a few weeks back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am sphere:

I'm always thinking about Friday for some reason.
Avatar 9:43am Roberto:

Translation: eliminate that apostrophe, homie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am melinda:

Morning everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am The Oscar:

Been glad to hear so much Residents this week, even though I wish the circumstances were happier.
  9:53am GListener MW:

agreed, Oscar -- rest in piece, Hardy Fox

Hello Skinny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am The Oscar:

Every time I listen to this album (which has been at least once a year, on the first major snowstorm, for at least the past fifteen years) it strikes me how much fun it must have been to record.
Avatar 10:02am John Allen:

great ritual Oscar!

US Girls at Knockdown Center in Maspeth, i think. on a bill with Tune-Yards
Avatar 10:18am John Allen:

that's it Mick
Avatar 10:30am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Hey all! I just borrowed Sonic Youth GOO from the library and I get it now. It was really really dissonant to me in the 90's for some reason. Now I get it. What is Sonic Youths best first album to get? To give you an idea I do NOT LIKE early Butthole Surfers, I like the more accessible stuff like Electric Larry Land.
Avatar 10:33am John Allen:

neil, go back one step- now is an appropriate time to pickup Daydream Nation
Avatar 10:37am Diezel Tea:

Hell, Neil, take the plunge back to EVOL! Hello everyone, by the way.
  10:40am karen eliot:

good morning
  10:41am Bobby:

EVOL or Sister!
Avatar 10:45am Diezel Tea:

Damn we all missed out on the semantics joke we coulda made on you, Neil. Sonic Youth only had 1 first album, like almost every band, you only get 1 first album so their best one would be their first. I think I need to leave my office, now.
Avatar 10:50am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Daydream Nation I think. !988 was a pivitol year from me. Dropped out of college and moved to NYC with no plan whatsoever. Weeeeeeeeeeee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am peapod ross:

'70s show was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am sphere:

i am totally enchanted by EVOL for some reason. it feels more powerful than Sister and Daydream Nation.
Avatar 10:55am Rev. Turnip Druid:

out of meetings. Lettuce rejoice. Also, more friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am zpulpa:

ooooof this feels right... looking forward to a quiet weekend of dazzling synths and walks in the park
Avatar 10:57am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Evol seemed like something SST would put out (based only on my knowledge of Hüsker Du). 4AD would be another guess at who they would go with as a label. Daydream Nation for me for the accessibility then Evol for the raw product , so to speak. Thanks people!
Avatar 10:58am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I must forfeit my cool-guy membership and be voted off the island by admitting no era of sonic youth ever did it for me, alas. Probably maxed-out my allowance of musical obsessions anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am sphere:

RTD, in order to stay cool you must renounce your membership at least once. So you're good. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am tim from champaign:

@Wild Neil - as unhelpful as this may sound, I'd recommend using Goo as an anchor, then move backward and forward album by album. Here's my favorite SY records by decade: 80s - Evol. 90s - Dirty. 00s - Rather Ripped.
  11:01am Bobby:

sphere: Perhaps it is the raw, snarling undercurrent. EVOL is my favorite SY record to reach for when it is dark
Avatar 11:02am ben abs:

sounds like dean blunt on that mb jones track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am sphere:

@Bobby - that sounds right to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am tim from champaign:

Very timely. Thanks, JA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am steveo:

my favorite sonic youth album is the whitey album by ciccone youth. come at me.
Avatar 11:07am ben abs:

Oooof. YES

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am sphere:

Avatar 11:10am Diezel Tea:

Indeed. Coincidentally I was listening to this record 2 weeks ago walking home from work.
  11:10am karen eliot:

nothing like a sonic youth concert. reminiscing. Friday is the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am peapod ross:

steveo that's great. Bad Moon Rising is awesome too.
  11:10am Bobby:

There’s your intro to Daydream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am tim from champaign:

Very cool. I love the first 2 Saints albums but haven't heard any Ed Kuepper solo stuff. This is great.
  11:22am Bobby:

Good thing I searched before I yelled out that he sounds EXACTLY like the guy from The Drones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Rob (Jerzcity):

holy shit
this is the album opener?!?
  11:25am Vixo:

tropical fuck storm Wow!!!!
  11:27am Hello:

That TFS album is a heat rock for sure. But I would say the peak is track 1. Whole album is definitely worth your time.

  11:31am Bobby:

If you want to have your ass kicked again, go all the way back for The Drones “The Miller’s Daughter”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Booz:

My ears perked at this new Heather Leigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am sphere:

Totally with you Booz.
  11:39am David in London:

That Garrett List album is amazing. Picked up a copy after hearing it here a week or two ago.
