Greetings avant DJ Jeff. Here early tonight but must hit the sack early. Tho, been enjoying your shows later via Archives. So, no problem.

Huh. I thought you'd till be out on the West Coast? A pleasant surprise.

We're not on the West Coast?

"thought you'd *still* be out on the West Coast"

I wonder which WFMU show gets the most typos on its comments?

Hello all. Happy to be here, unstuck in time.

Jeff Conklin:

Am I supposed to be out west?
  10:12pm
Lucky:

For some reason, I thought you were going out west. Don't mind me. There is far too much information in my brain to organize and this from a librarian.
Avatar 10:13pm
Jeff Conklin:

Ha, i take it youre refering to my recnt post about Montana. I'll be there end of August...

Hey there fellow weirdos, I say this with love of course

Starbirthed, new to me!

Speaking of...any listeners out there living in/around Bozeman?
  10:15pm
Lucky:

Maybe that's it? I have an Instagram account but no smart phone. I lurk to watch some folks, but I get confused who's who. Anyway, have fun out there! I imagine it's fairly beautiful...
Avatar 10:17pm
Jennifer_PNW:

@Lucky, I've always wanted to work in a library but it seems like these days you need a MS or PhD in library science.
Avatar 10:18pm
TDK60:

Jeff, in one sense you *are* on the west coast -- the west coast of the Hudson River.

I’m on the west coast. I am, right??

"The West is the best." -Jim Morrison (But I like Out East too -Cape Cod, Cape May, Coney Island.)

Wow, new material?
Avatar 10:23pm
Jennifer_PNW:

How's the rest of the record?
  10:25pm
Lucky:

@ Jennifer_PNW: Well, in public libraries you could be a "library associate" with an undergrad degree (at least in NJ), but I'm not sure about academic libraries. Libraries in NJ - like much public infrastructural stuff here - is underfunded, so not sure how much money it will provide in the future. Also, I work in an urban library, so it's much more about providing connection to social services than books, but maybe that's not for everyone?

FWIW, I probably drove through Bozeman on a trip out there years ago. Flew out to Billings and drove around the state.

Hey everyone, I also love this set tonight...I've been reading poetry by Edward Dorn tonight, a great Western American poet!
Avatar 10:31pm
franny:

Wikipedia's telling me Ed Dorn was a 'mentor and supporter' of the musical group Devo. He whipped it.
Avatar 10:33pm
Adamsworth:

Whoa, I didn't know about the Devo connection, I just have a collection called Way More West, and a collection of a 3 part epic poem called Gunslinger, which is amazing.

The Butterman:

Bout time we heard this. Good for people who don't know Dead.
Avatar 10:33pm

Libraries underfunded. And "defense" departments wealthy beyond imagination; that says a lot about us.

Some nice hip hop like beats there from GD! So versatile.

Another racetrack show...
...and I suppose we're only supposed to talk about the music? :-)
Avatar 10:49pm
Jennifer_PNW:

I never really got into Phish but I saw a live broadcast last week and it was really good! I can't compare it with any other of their stuff but to the novice like me, they seemed to have a lot of energy. And the crowd was super into it.
Avatar 10:51pm
Jeff Conklin:

@Jennifer: Check out a show sometime (though theyre out of your zone for a while now)
Avatar 10:51pm
Jennifer_PNW:

Is this the greatest soundcheck ever?
Avatar 10:51pm

July '73 was in Charleston, West Virginia, hitchhiking up to Morgantown a lot. On the turntable at home everything from Emerson, Lake & Palmer [sic], to Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, to Santana, to Herbie Hancock.

The Dead, this show....so....tiresome.
Avatar 11:02pm
mb:

@ngh: I had a similar experience. What was it about the music that turned you off, if i may ask?
  11:04pm
Frank Zaatar:

Hey, I was at this festival (along with 599,999 of my firends)! The soundcheck was indeed a lot better than the afternoon set.
  11:04pm
AntsyListener:

Never been a fan. Saw them in OKC in the 1970"s. Dreadful.
My first live concert was Hendrix.
The tiresome was accurate, but also a bad joke on the Race Venue.
Avatar 11:04pm
mb:

The stream background talk over "music" fits you nicely. Goes with the theme of the AG t-shirt and all.
Avatar 11:07pm
northguineahills:

Mixing in the Dead music w/ a footy (match)

@mb: Didn't dislike it, it just wasn't my thing. At the time, I was nascent noob into music, and was stuck in the indie ghetto, and just discovered jazz improv, and mid-century avant-garde composition. I finally got into the Dead after Oswald's remixes, and have plenty of albums now. Still haven't gotten into most Phish, but there is some I like of their songs, and I admire Trey Anastasio's virtuosity...

My #1 complaint about the Byrds is that Wasn't Born To Follow is way too short. I want a band to cover it and stretch it out! If you're in a band, consider doing this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

I love the Byrds. Roger McGuinn is really under appreciated

@ngh: Great answer. I was the same and was lucky enough to be immersed in all NYC had to offer musically in the 90's so my tastes varied. The studio albums by Phish were good enough for me but i still try to see 1 or 2 shows a year. I've gotten better at the internet and will watch a stream once in awhile but its not the same as being there.
Avatar 11:16pm
Adamsworth:

@jgrosch, I will do that! Thanks for the tip!

It looks like it is 4 and a half minutes long. I'll listen to it after the show is done.
