"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

I need to click the star on this Rolnick song every single time. It's a highlight of my week.
Avatar 9:10am Rich in Bay Ridge:

Agree @karl - this is one of the greatest things I've ever heard and it never gets old.
  9:12am ynisvitrin:

I'm sorry if thousands of people before me have asked this every Friday, but... What's the backstory with this??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am AndrewC.:

It's just the theme tune for the show right? A long theme tune sure, but just a theme tune.
Avatar 9:15am Rich in Bay Ridge:

It's a performance by Neil Rolnick. I don't know much beyond the fact that it's great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am AndrewC.:

I confess I did have a liking for the old 6am style of show start. i.e. JA rushes in at 0559, throws on the longest song that is close at hand, and runs off to make coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am karlward:

Just like I don't need no instructions to know how to rock, I don't need the backstory to decide what we're gonna tell your mom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am AndrewC.:

Though sometimes I did hear rather more JM in the AM than I needed to.
  9:17am COLINfromvictoriabritishcolumbiacanada:

At this rate we hear thar Rolnick piece 12 hours every year. Bravo!
Avatar 9:18am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Neil Rolnick is a living, modern composer. So was Frank Zappa. Different tastes for different folks I guess. I used to HATE HATE HATE this song, now I find small bits of it interesting.
JM in the AM was kinda extreme politically from what I have heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am steveo:

good morning, enjoying the flies in the ointment
Avatar 9:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Isn't Space is the Place a Sun Ra tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am steveo:

/me claps politely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am karlward:

JA: I know what it means when you drop Narada--is everything OK?
Avatar 10:00am northguineahills:

driftmachine, new to me!

@Wild Neil: Yes, and I recommend you see the film (it's a short, and on youtube).
Avatar 10:01am northguineahills:

Well, my WC bracket is tre-effed, I had Peru and Costa Rica as my dark horses, well, that didn't pan out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am joe mulligan:

loved those creaking ship sounds in the driftmachine track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am melinda:

hi everyone
Avatar 10:03am northguineahills:

@melinda: everyone says hi!

Avatar 10:05am John Allen:

hola everyone

Avatar 10:08am Diezel Tea:

Privyet to all, one of my colleagues has taken to an interesting form of defense against my habit of playing fmu at work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Rob (Jerzcity):

Avatar 10:10am Diezel Tea:

He has been playing the same 3 Evanescence songs from his laptop on repeat since Tuesday. The irony is I'm rather certain he is more sick of it than I, as I find the situation to be hilarious. CARRY ON
Avatar 10:10am northguineahills:

@Diezel Tea: Playing my music and WFMU got me to overturn the the no headphones policy at my old job (they couldn't stand what I was playing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Rob (Jerzcity):

is that a defense, or just the way that people listen to evanescence normally?
Avatar 10:12am northguineahills:

I have no clue what evanescence is.......
Avatar 10:12am Lixiviated Life:

I'm Ready !
Avatar 10:12am Diezel Tea:

Haha @Rob, at first I thought it was a whole album on repeat, but today I discovered it's only 3 songs on loop. @NGH I was happy with my headphones in except that it became annoying being that I'm a heavy smoker and leave my desk about every 30 minutes.
Avatar 10:13am Diezel Tea:

@NGH you've heard it before prolly a few years ago, radio rock band that had a pop hit
Avatar 10:17am northguineahills:

Now I want to hear Running the Jewels collaborate w/ Turning Jewels into water + Night Jewel, and maybe even throw in Jewel for good measure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Rob (Jerzcity):

they had that 'wake me up inside' song that sounds like linkin park i think? maybe that could be an alternate JA/AM theme song to 'wake up'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am AndrewC.:

Your workplace had a no headphones rule, but you could just play music out loud??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Rob (Jerzcity):

@ngh - El-P would probably be down with that
Avatar 10:23am northguineahills:

@Rob: Chatted w/ El-P once at a bar in Williamsburg. All of these fan girls were trying to get his attention. He waved them off and talked to me b/c I just wanted to talk about music. Solid lad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Devin B.:

Wow loving this Carlos Peron
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am mb:

Happy Friday all. Thx for the ezra collective earlier John Allen. Sometimes i forget where "the place" is.
Avatar 10:35am Diezel Tea:

Oddly I only became active on the fmu comments AFTER I left the US. We...coulda...been....friends.....
BTW the wake me up inside song is 1/3 of the dude's playlist)))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am joe mulligan:

"ex-Yello" haha only on WFMU.
Avatar 10:39am northguineahills:

@Diezel Tea: we're all friends here...
Avatar 10:53am Diezel Tea:

You know what I mean, smarty pants.
Avatar 11:00am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@NGH-Who is El-P?
Avatar 11:01am Wild Neil||Peace All:

The Fold sounds a lot like New Order. Or Depeche Mode?
Avatar 11:03am Lixiviated Life:

Doing a Viking Clap for Iceland World Cup.
Avatar 11:04am John Allen:

actually the fold sound a lot like the terminals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Ken From Hyde Park:

Summer Fridays are great, huh? On WFMU and life in general, I mean.
Avatar 11:08am northguineahills:

@Wild Neil: El-P started w/ the indie hiphop group in the 90s, Company Flow. Then he started the label Def Jux, and started producing and doing solo work. He has lately been doing an eclectic hiphop pop group w/ Killer Mike called Run the Jewels, and actually is pretty decent.
Avatar 11:09am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@JA-true to my style, never heard of The Terminals! Will youtube them or look them up on WFMU band browser!
Avatar 11:10am northguineahills:

@Lixiavated Life: Me too! Farðu í Ísland!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am steveo:

i was getting the fall vibes from the fold but i'm probably just a bad person
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am karlward:

Juvenile is the Mark E. Smith of crunk. Discuss.
Avatar 11:11am northguineahills:

Ken From Hyde Park: tu gatito en tu avatar is grooving to the beat!
Avatar 11:13am Diezel Tea:

Ah, that cat likes to play behind the beat it seems.
Aight kids I'm off, have weekends of legend.
Avatar 11:14am Wild Neil||Peace All:

The reverb-or flanger/chorus?- on the fold sounded a lot like some dark wave 80's bands to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

@ngh - Goovy cat be groovin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am karlward:

Another week goes by and we still don't have a WFMU sponsored Mariah Carey + Saccharine Trust live in-studio performance collab.
Avatar 11:26am Chris from DC:

@Neil The Terminals are a great band. You'l want to follow up with the current related band the Renderers.
Avatar 11:27am Chris from DC:

And yay, Chris Forsyth in DC tonight.
Avatar 11:28am John Allen:

it's the potential opportunities that drive freeform radio, Karl.
Avatar 11:32am Wild Neil||Peace All:

So my neighbors have about 12 chickens and now a young raccoon will not leave them alone. Their chickens' feed has attracted rats, now we have the raccoon and some skunks around. Wild freaking kingdom up in here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Carmichael:

@Neil, you need a cobra and perhaps a wolf. If that doesn't solve the problem, at least it would be more interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Ken From Hyde Park:

@WN - I'm sure coyotes are not far behind.
  11:36am Mark Ohe:

Avatar 11:37am Chris from DC:

Avatar 11:38am John Allen:

that one's for you, Chris
Avatar 11:39am Chris from DC:

  11:47am listener monica:

just got off work. this song perked me right up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am mb:

I liked it when you told that story about Bruce
