"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Webhamster Henry:

Hi JA! I met Rolnick a few years ago up at RPI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am karlward:

Rolnick, you evil genius, Friday isn't the same without you.
Avatar 9:17am John Allen:

Web Hen, was your intro to Neil as wonderful as this song?
  9:17am Listener Robert:

This is the part that gives me the emotional rxn, coming out of the dream into the locomotive.
9:19am DumDumGuy at the Gates of Dawn:

Did not see that coming. I’m woke!
Avatar 9:20am Diezel Tea:

@Webhamster what was he doing up at RPI? By kid brother is an alumnus, never knew of anything musical going on up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Rob (Jerzcity):

Apparently (via wiki) he taught at RPI until around 2013
Avatar 9:28am duke:

@Diezel there are some interesting thing going on at Empac at RPI
  9:31am Listener Robert:

My understanding was that RPI specialized in all things electronic, so that mde sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am karlward:

This is cool. I thought this was Tim Buckley at first.
  9:34am Rover James:

Surprised to find out that Alan Arkin was a member of the Tarriers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Webhamster Henry:

RPI is the home of EMPAC and the C.R.A.I.V.E. Lab ( a 360 degree projection room with about 120 speakers behind the screens). I was visiting as part of my association with Pauline Oliveros, who taught there for many years.
I have a tiny cut on the same CD as Rolnick, Cuneiform Records' "Transforms: The Nerve Events Project"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Webhamster Henry:

Alan Arkin was also in the great kids' folk music band The Babysitters!
9:43am DumDumGuy at the Gates of Dawn:

What is that Vince Martin song where he sings the word “fishing” like a hundred times?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Aaron Working In Newark:

Have not heard this song in foerver
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am karlward:

I really thought I was the only one blasting Rites of Spring in NJ but now EVERYONE IS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am MD:

F yeah. R O S.
  9:55am McGreivey:

RPI is also the home of Commander Cody guitarist John Tichey. He's a "Professor, Mechanical Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering".

E-mair-jon-cy. Everybody off street.
10:05am DumDumGuy at the Gates of Dawn:

@polyus I can’t tell if endless boogie will be opening or headlong those shows
Avatar 10:05am northguineahills:

Still trying to get my head to connect to my body, yaye for Kim Gordon!
Avatar 10:05am John Allen:

where's the trouble, Robert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am karlward:

This reminds me of "Oh Sheit it's X" by Thundercat. In a weird sideways way. A totally wild fretless bass solo would work here. Please send these notes along to Watson.

Avatar 10:17am PKNY:

This Donald Byrd track makes me want to steal an early 70s muscle car and run into a row of metal garbage cans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Booz:

So psyched for Full Mantis, and today's mixtape, and all manner of pulses.
Avatar 10:29am Polyus:

I sure hope this streams somewhere because I am betting there is less than 2% chance of this screeneing in my town.
  10:32am Doobois:

Damn, PKNY. Just damn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Devin B.:

This is so awesome

Excited to hear this set. The documentary is amazing.
Avatar 10:39am northguineahills:

Damn, this is needed! The recent The Wire interview w/ Milford Graves (he's on the cover) is mandaory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am steveo:

Hi John, welcome back. We heard whale songs while you were gone; also i was in Shake Shack by Boro Hall this week and guess what came on the PA? Mad as Hell! So your plan is working. Happy Friday. I'm glad to be listening. (@bob ross I think this is jazz)
Avatar 10:39am Chris from DC:

Avatar 10:41am themutante:

Yep, @NGH. March issue of Wire Magazine
Avatar 10:42am themutante:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Booz:

That echo effect is the perfect echo effect and no other echo effect will ever feel the same again.
Avatar 10:52am JakeGould:

I don’t know what Robert’s “e-mair-jon-cy” was but apparently Honey Smacks cereal is being recalled due to salmonella infections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Devin B.:

There's a hazmat situation in NE/NW DC this morning - we are advised to boil our tap water before consumption
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Carmichael:

Good morning, people of the payday.

  11:03am Nate K:

This Milford segment is some heavy, inspiring stuff, John. Thanks!
  11:04am blee:

All this Milford Graves, fantastic to hear.
  11:06am Listener Robert:

"E-mair-jon-cy, everybody off street" is how I'll always remember Alan Arkin (referenced upthread) from "The Russians Are Coming". The character wqs always "correcting" the English pronunciation of his underlings when they were correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am mb:

Loving these Milford clips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Mick:

Everyone has said some version of this already, but this Milford stuff is fabulous and a half - can't wait to see the film
Avatar 11:16am Joel St. Germain:

Awesome show !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Booz:

Thanks for this whole situation JA. Now feeling ready for everything.

@ListenerRobert: More that usual, but WTF are you yammering about?
Avatar 11:52am ben abs:

ta JA
Avatar 11:54am ben abs:

@ jake - E-mair-jon-cy = emergency
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

This week has been amazing: first William Parker on The Long Rally, now Milford Graves on JA/AM. Thanks for this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am mb:

thanks J.A. Very informative show this morning. Inspiring.

And thx for the show dates. Can you please post the NYC dates here? I will attend.
Avatar 11:58am JakeGould:

@benabs: I know what that means. I mean the rest of the rambling nonsense.
Avatar 11:58am northguineahills:

Thanks John and Jake, I'm afraid this won't be playing in my town. :(
Avatar 12:00pm ben abs:

@jake, haha - my bad!
