Avatar 3:02pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

That painting is really great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Carmichael:

Heya Irwin and future people.
Avatar 3:10pm AnAnonymousParty:

That's a lot of guitar there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Michael 98145:

you cannot hide from Our Time
Avatar 3:13pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I checked out this artist's link. Wow!
  3:16pm Erik:

What was the group that played previous to the song Cannot Hide from Our Time?
Avatar 3:18pm Irwin:

Erik, where are you in the known universe? Your coordinates, I mean.
Avatar 3:19pm Lixiviated Life:

Turned on.
Tuned in.
Logged out.
  3:19pm I AM:

New MGMT sounds much like Ariel Pink
Avatar 3:19pm Irwin:

I AM: good call.
  3:21pm Erik:

Wyoming, in the sticks Irwin, Hyattville in fact. I am new to your site and think I discovered your playlist. Bushman's Revenge I take it? I like your set thus far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Michael 98145:

welcome, @Erik
Avatar 3:24pm AnAnonymousParty:

Irwin, you said that like you were my server at a restaurant. You gonna bring out some bread or what?
Avatar 3:25pm Roberto:

No bread until Saturday night.
Avatar 3:25pm Irwin:

We have sticks in New Jersey too, Erik. Lots.
Avatar 3:28pm Lixiviated Life:

@Erik New to WFMU? I envy and pity you at the same time.
Best advice I can give is: Do nothing.
Welcome and good luck,
Avatar 3:29pm AnAnonymousParty:

Many consider where I live to BE the sticks.
Avatar 3:31pm Lixiviated Life:

Footnote: Not everything here will sound as well done as Irwin. (At first)
Avatar 3:33pm AnAnonymousParty:

Some things here even sound raw.
Avatar 3:33pm Irwin:

TBT sounds like a young Courtney Barnett.
  3:33pm Listener Robert:

WMFU's been down for about 5 mins. now. Just interstation hiss.
Avatar 3:34pm Irwin:

Thanks, Robert. Overlord Ken has been notified,.
  3:35pm TheWood:

That last song was sick - world of squalor by family of god. wow. too bad that song isn't on youtube
Avatar 3:35pm Linda Lee:

once you hear the young Courtney Barnett in TBT you can't unhear her.
Avatar 3:35pm AnAnonymousParty:

Question of protocol: How long does one wait before declaring hiss to be unintentional?
  3:36pm I AM:

This a Tubeway Army cover?
Avatar 3:37pm Roberto:

Seeing as Courtney Barnett is currently 30, I'd say all Courtney Barnett is young Courtney Barnett.
Avatar 3:37pm Linda Lee:

agree, amazing painting. wild body of work.
Avatar 3:38pm Linda Lee:

actually Courtney Barnett is no-longer-quite-young Courtney Barnett. young Courtney Barnett is about 21. :-D
Avatar 3:38pm Lixiviated Life:

@ AnAnonymousParty that all depends. Are you listening to a Bryce archive?
  3:38pm Listener Robert:

@ AnAnonymousParty, I do wait longer before deciding hiss isn't content when listening to many WFMU programs than I would other stations.

I bet it's related to the wind this time. I hope it's not a scene in Mt. Hope like that in the playlist pic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Google Maps satellite view of Hyattville makes it look like a barren moonscape. Zooming in closer, I see some irrigation circles along the river. I'd paste a link, but it's a mile long.
Avatar 3:41pm AnAnonymousParty:

MY point exactly, seems like it is dependent on the show. Maybe each show should post its 'maximum hiss duration before considered dead air' parameter at the top of their show pages as a guide to the listener.
  3:42pm Listener Robert:

Ken & Andy haven't played Dead Air Chicken in a while.
Avatar 3:42pm Linda Lee:

gee, remember when radio was just the radio & what came out of it? :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Rob (Jerzcity):

This was a good comp - need to revisit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Tommy in Neversink:

Irwin...90.1 is down ...just static.....windy up here
Avatar 3:51pm Lixiviated Life:

Nothing like Nick Drake.
Nothing as sublime, nothing as delicate, nothing as brilliant.
  3:51pm berbo:

Don't forget the boilers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Tommy in Neversink:

OH, I see you already know ...sorry
  3:51pm dug:

nothing like station gossip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Passaic River Blues:

Great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm joe:

"Forgive me followers for I have sinned. I have used the lords name in vain for the sheer enjoyment of other anti-social radio listening malcontents."
Avatar 3:53pm Lixiviated Life:

More useless “management” from SMK.
Avatar 3:54pm AnAnonymousParty:

The guitar riff in this song seems like the guitar in the last song but started at a different point.
Avatar 4:03pm Linda Lee:

where else on fmu is there good jazz this consistently? i ask honestly.
  4:05pm Tom:

90.1 i hear ya now.
  4:05pm Listener Robert:

Fearless Leader came thru, WMFU's back up!
Avatar 4:06pm βrian:

Damn you, Irwin. I'm trying to catch a bus!
Avatar 4:06pm Linda Lee:

Ken never lets us linger long without a signal. say what you will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Uncle Michael:

Brian, if you catch one, what will you do with it?
Avatar 4:07pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Linda Lee-I used to listen to the "best jazz station in the world" in Toronto at 91.1 but I thought it kinda sucked compared to what Irwin plays. I would like to know where else to hear jazz...didn't The Old Codger play 78's of jazz?
  4:08pm Laura L:

Very nice piano piece--made me stop working to say thanks for playing this, Irwin.
Avatar 4:08pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Irwin-like Branchville, NJ. Or Greendell. Or Manunkachunk on Rte 46.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff Golick plays jazz on the Drummer stream on Sunday mornings...until he doesn't.
Avatar 4:10pm Irwin:

Thanks, LL. I'm taken by this piece too.
Avatar 4:10pm AnAnonymousParty:

WSIE has its jazz moments.
Avatar 4:10pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

3iO is pretty awesome!
Avatar 4:11pm Soul Captain:

Avatar 4:12pm Linda Lee:

when i was living up at 2400' before this year i picked up wrti out of temple u, philadelphia (i'm in ulster county, ny). they split their day between classical & jazz. jazz offerings were fairly uneven. quality was all about the dj on air. ~ i have a sense that a solid jazz program hosted by Irwin would be solidly top notch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm BronwynB:

hey irwin and everyone!
  4:13pm Erik:

3iO, quite nice, thanks for the intro Irwin.
Avatar 4:14pm Linda Lee:

personally i'm ready to campaign for more jazz & more classical on FMU proper. do miss Bethany's A440. top shelf stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Carmichael:

Just back from gullet stuffing. Pink Moon is a landmark album.
Avatar 4:18pm Linda Lee:

will there be a video feed of Ken's address this evening? with fidgeting staff behind him mid-range?
Avatar 4:18pm Linda Lee:

lots of ties & banners?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm joe:

My understanding is that he will be taking to the air tonight to explain how WFMU will be building a new transmitter and WAXQ will be paying for it one way or the other.
Avatar 4:27pm Linda Lee:

what a sweet track by the primitives! real pop joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If you have topics you'd like SMK to cover, send him an email ken @ wfmu.org and he may address it on the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Michael 98145:

did the station ever sell the parking lot ?
Avatar 4:29pm Linda Lee:

there's a question for email!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm melinda:

Hi Irwin and group! Just in time for Sleeping Timmy, yay.
Avatar 4:32pm Linda Lee:

'Sleeping Timmy' track somehow reminds me of the Richard O'Brien demos of Rocky Horror songs on acoustic guitar.
Avatar 4:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...cats have 90foot lives...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Uncle Michael:

Irwin, thank you for Simon Stlenhag. I need to see the movie.
Avatar 4:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...TNK is just a BoDiddley riff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Ken From Hyde Park:

AKA, the Hippie Noise License.
  4:44pm berbo:

Some DJs think they can just play The Shaggs once a year and call themselves "freeform". Lame.
  4:44pm Marc15:

Beware of fake Freeform
Avatar 4:45pm Irwin:

How to program free-form: Rock out, wuss out, jazz out, spazz out. Repeat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Michael 98145:

[ serving suggestion : adoseofchemtrails.bandcamp.com ]
Avatar 4:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we'll peak out - & then we'll probably freak out...yer on restriction...so you'll have to sneeeak ou-oo-ou-out...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm blee:

I am digging the John Morton composition.
Avatar 5:08pm Linda Lee:

lots of multiple music boxes on air today. fun stuff.
  5:08pm Laura L:

Like this one a whole lot too! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 5:12pm Linda Lee:

sweet tone on this horn!
Avatar 5:14pm geezerette:

Hey Michael! You can really carry a tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Michael 98145:

as long as it's freeform
Avatar 5:17pm geezerette:

:D !
Avatar 5:17pm Anthony!:

Play some Molly Hatchet sometime.
Avatar 5:18pm Linda Lee:

freeform means never having to say you're sorry.
Avatar 5:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Miles says this is FakeFree...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Michael 98145:

beautiful cover art : f4.bcbits.com...
Avatar 5:19pm geezerette:

Hiya Linda Lee!
Avatar 5:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...then he swore a bit...
Avatar 5:19pm Linda Lee:

geezerette! hi!
Avatar 5:19pm Irwin:

The Verdancy package design deserves all sorts of awards. Absolutely stunning.
Avatar 5:19pm Anthony!:

What exactly is free form anyway? Is it like Free Will? Is it like Free Jazz?
  5:20pm DC:

David Garland really knocked it out of the park with Verdancy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Michael 98145:

... wow : f4.bcbits.com...
Avatar 5:21pm Linda Lee:

freeform = lack of structural constraints. more or less.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Lewis:

I know it is intermediate at best, but I am a bit pleased with myself in that my brain said "isn't that the BeeGees"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Carmichael:

When was this Bee Gees released? Don't think I've ever heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It's like Free Willy, but with music.
Avatar 5:23pm Irwin:

It was a single in 1972, non-album track.
Avatar 5:24pm geezerette:

RevRab! I'm definitely in the right room.

Irwin & Michael, stunning is right! Wow!
Avatar 5:24pm Anthony!:

Lack of structure? Like the creation in Genesis 1:1? Without form...
Avatar 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sounds very 'now'. Prolly cuz that's when I'm hearing it...
Avatar 5:25pm Linda Lee:

not quite that free :-D
Avatar 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*Finally* saw some 'Sounbreaking'. Kinda fundamental - bit very good...basic analogy of Recording to Painting: can be single brushstroke - or niggling over & over...Beck saying all Eras exist @ once now...
Avatar 5:26pm Anthony!:

So God was the ultimate in Free Form.
Avatar 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*butt very good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Michael 98145:

[ yes, "Four beautifully packaged CDs, featuring artwork by David Garland." ]
Avatar 5:27pm Linda Lee:

.. unless you see the consciousness of Diety as a structural limitation!
Avatar 5:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Disco ruined these guys. So good back then...
Avatar 5:28pm Linda Lee:

but you always need structural limitations even with freeform .. or there's nothing to offer, since there's no medium.
Avatar 5:29pm Linda Lee:

so there's no *true* freeform. there's always structure.
Avatar 5:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Beethoven sounded dissonant - Ornette seems no big deal now...
Avatar 5:30pm Anthony!:

Well if you are a Christian you believe that God made himself flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus was just a guy, so he could have been the ultimate free form if there was radio in olden times...
Avatar 5:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Watts said Jesus shouda been Hindu - but the Structure he had was wrong...we're all Gawd - but you can't say you're the Boss's Son in this tradition...Pedastalized: Make Jeezus - Thuhh One - & the GoodNews that it's all of us stops dead right there...Me - I say prove he was anyone @ all...
Avatar 5:35pm Linda Lee:

sure. you can give your faith any kinda form you want.
Avatar 5:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mistaking the finger that points for the Moon itself...or now: the Browser for the Site...
Avatar 5:36pm geezerette:

Excellent Lettuce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Carmichael:

OK, this music is either a satire or homage. Or both, maybe ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm melinda:

I love the Lettuce too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 5:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Carmichael: Listening to Aquarium Drunkard interview Paul Major - & struggling to articulate this very thing: sincerity - 'Real People' music he calls it...put aside TheBeatles for Garage obscurituies...then they become commonplace...move on to 'Outsider' music & SuburbanGospel...GlobalGarage...WhutNext...
Avatar 5:39pm geezerette:

Carm, just what I was thinking.

Melinda! Was listening to Joe Albany earlier & remembered you like him too.
Avatar 5:39pm Irwin:

Yes, it's a Miles cover.
Avatar 5:39pm Linda Lee:

Lettuce Pray! :-D
Avatar 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or - as FiresignTheatre put it - WhuzReal??...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Lewis:

I think Irwin is running the vacuum...
Avatar 5:42pm Linda Lee:

i thought God was running the vacuum! then there was the word!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Michael 98145:

it's a dark matter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Lewis:

oh @LL, very well played!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Tommy in Neversink:

Sound's like 70s jazz fusion...which I liked...but then again , I like everything .Hence my FMU addiction

This Lettuce is divine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Carmichael:

Miles Davis song, Tommy.
  5:44pm mzmzzm:

it's easy to serve too much stuff on the cover plate
Avatar 5:44pm Linda Lee:

Tommy, i'm sure there's at least one thing on FMU you don't care for. starts with Andy, ends with gum.
  5:45pm Erik:

Gotta run Irwin, but thanks for a terrific set, I'm hooked I have you marked for playing Wednesdays. Looking forward to next Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm melinda:

Hi geeze! I'm not really familiar w/Joe Albany outside of the music that was included in the movie based on his daughter's memoir, Lowdown. It is a great soundtrack though.
Avatar 5:48pm Linda Lee:

@melinda ~ that's my 19 year old cat, too: the geeze. :-)
Avatar 5:48pm Linda Lee:

he's with me in that flickr photo.
Avatar 5:50pm geezerette:

Melinda, he was really brilliant. Wasn't aware of him when he was living and haven't seen film, though I hope I will, but what a gift.
Avatar 5:52pm geezerette:

Linda Lee, this IS your cat! Damn, you blew my cover!
Avatar 5:53pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 5:55pm Linda Lee:

most of my kitties have been black. they just find me. i'm grateful!
Avatar 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Black kitties the best!
Alexander Shulgin talked about a drug that did one thing & one thing only: made music sound out of tune. So - there's a neural receptor - for that specifically...
