Shalom, avotcjas!
  3:08pm brainiac:

I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them eat cake for breakfast.

Is this Trans Pacific Sound Paradise? Hello everyone.

I'm just going to go ahead and favorite this episode now. This set is already amazing me, Irwin.

Hey Irwin! NGC et all!

Hello Irwin and fellow listeners.

Hello everyone ><((*>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Passaic River Blues:

@blee: Yeah, excellent set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm BronwynB:

hey irwin and everyone
  3:26pm misterpickles69:

What did jack do?
  3:27pm berbo:

The Jack Mello episode was so legendary, John Bonham was like "woah, dude, dial it down".
Avatar 3:27pm Jeff Moore:

"Pleased as punch" is said by the really chipper people.

Really chipper people of a bygone age.

And retrolinguists.
Avatar 3:29pm duke:

I'm please as punch to be listening this afternoon
Avatar 3:31pm Little Danny:

Nicely discovered, that Mellbays!
  3:32pm brainiac:

White people be so unsyncopated, they can't even clap to 4/4 time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Parq:

In the 60s, comedy impressions of Hubert Humphrey always portrayed him as saying that he was pleased as punch.

Lilly Tomlin (Laugh In, ca. 1969, as Ernestine): You say you're pleased as punch that I called? Well, nowadays, I'll bet you're pleased as punch that anybody calls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Irwin:

brain: At what point did you decide the Shaggs were unworthy?
Avatar 3:39pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Hey, Neil Peart has rhythm! So does Ginger Baker! And Nick Mason!
Avatar 3:39pm Hoboken Jack:

Tracyanne & Danny will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 19.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Irwin:

Thx, HJ. Never heard of them before discovering this track. New album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Passaic River Blues:

"Weird Era Cont." may have been the best record of 2008.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Irwin:

PRB: Some artists never release a bad album. Deerhunter is one. Yo La Tengo also comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm geoff mcq:

I really liked that Tracyanne and Danny track. I was wondering what would become of the remaining folk from Camera Obscura AND NOW I KNOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm listener Rey:

I buy anything I find by George Russell and am never disappointed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Passaic River Blues:

@Irwin: Definitely. I think that's something you've said in the past about Broadcast. Also very true.
  3:48pm brainiac:

@Irwin, I never trusted the Shaggs after they tried to extol the virtues of parents. *Phooey*
Avatar 3:49pm TDK60:

I heard a rumor they're playing some pop gems round here, so came running.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Parq:

Tracyanne's voice is still something else. I saw the old band at Music Hall of WB shortly before keyboard player Carey succumbed to her illness.
  3:58pm Woo:

The tambourine in Reflections sounds like someone pounded a nail into a wall with a tambourine, place the tambourine on the nail, then started hitting the tambourine with another tambourine.
  4:02pm Milo Minimalist:

Nice bit of Reich's 'Four Organs'! - pls play the whole ting!
  4:02pm jess:

love love love this!
  4:03pm Listener Robert:

Parq, Fred Cookinham, who could do a good HHH impression (as well as of lots of other people), told me that predilection of Humphrey's. But maybe he was just getting it from other impressionists saying "pleased as punch" as Humphrey. Things like that take on a life of their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Irwin:

Milo: It was a cover! Entitled "Four Optigans" by Pea Hicks.
  4:05pm Listener Robert:

Today I saw "The Death of Stalin" at Cinepolis Mansfield on Rte. 57 just south of Hackettstown, where it's closing after tomorrow. Very entertaining movie, tons of laughs yet poignant. Steve Buscemi looks and sounds to me so much like Wallace Shawn, I'm telling people it was Steve Buscemi as Wallace Shawn as Nikita Kruschev.
Avatar 4:07pm TDK60:

I've heard that Stalin movie is funny. Haven't had a chance to see yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm LunchboxTA:

Seen it twice now, enjoyed it a ton, even though I have been informed it is not 100% historically accurate
  4:11pm brainiac:

  4:12pm Listener Robert:

You must have been misinformed by corrupt revisionists, Lunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm LunchboxTA:

Ahahah perhaps so. One of the ones who told me was a Russian and the other was a communist, so it is entirely possible
Avatar 4:14pm Fredericks:

The 3iO is wonderfully Coltranesque.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Parq:

Man, this "Seven Seasons" is easy on the ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm misterpickles69:

I still need to know what Jack Mello did. the googles do nothing.
  4:19pm Tom:

That’s why I love this show, cause every song picked is good. You can tell by most of the drumming.
Avatar 4:21pm Fredericks:

Previously, I believe I was referring to Jackie McLean, although the 3i0 was pretty nice, as well. Just not Coltranesque.
  4:24pm queems:

i really like the snail mail
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm mb:

I agree Fredericks. Its also very Bad Plus-y without the edge.
  4:25pm Woo:

I tried hard to buy a Snail Mail recording. First it was a cassette that was sold out, then it was just vinyl or stream. I know CDs are obsolete but that's the format I would like. I will pay cash money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Itzall Ablurr:

My dot gain has been interrupted by a <2% battery mouse. Bummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Passaic River Blues:

@queems: Me, too. I think Irwin played another by them a few weeks ago. It's the kind of record I wish I could give to my sisters 10 years ago.
Avatar 4:29pm Fredericks:

mb: what is the Bad Plus without an edge?
  4:29pm queems:

@passaic river blues it’s weird that you say that, because it definitely made me feel like i felt 10 years ago
Avatar 4:32pm Fredericks:

If tomatoes are actually a fruit, why don't fruit flies like them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Irwin:

The 3iO came out in 2010. Not quite a decade ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Parq:

Tomatoes were made a fruit so that smart alecks could win bar bets.
  4:40pm queems:

sing it donny
  4:40pm EG_Astro:

oh the guitar tone in this song is so gross! :) so happy to hear this song today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Irwin:

Love the drums. Are they real?
Avatar 4:42pm Listening Out There:

RE the drums...it's probably how they're mic'ed...
Avatar 4:42pm Listening Out There:

...that was a secret that Al Green's drummer had...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm LunchboxTA:

also heard some barrence whitfield on teenage wasteland last week. not complaining mind you, been enjoying his voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm mb:

Fredericks: 3iO does not have the same attack and rawness as the Bad Plus, imo. But the sound and note selection sounded familiar to the BP.
  4:50pm berbo:

@Fredericks - some fruit flies do like tomatoes -
Avatar 4:52pm Listening Out There:

"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana." -Groucho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm LunchboxTA:

wow this a fantastic sound. is that an organ? very ethereal feel.
Avatar 4:55pm Listening Out There:

The "Hollow Life" melody is borrowed from a Coltrane piece, innit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Irwin:

This Weston piece is a Billy Strayhorn tune.
Avatar 4:58pm Listening Out There:

WNYC Soundcheck just had a good interview with Randy Weston - feeds.wnyc.org...
  4:59pm brainiac:

Phil Ramone was listed as producer on that POS Donny Osmond record. (For those who love engaging in self-harm, listen to to horrid remake of "Crazy Horses" as the "Untitled Hidden Track".)
  5:00pm brainiac:

It hurt me so deeply I can't type straight.
  5:08pm Ron Bass:

I saw Moondog on 6th Avenue wearing his Viking helmet in the late 60s. I've started reading the biography but haven't gotten too far into it yet.
  5:11pm berbo:

This new Donovan album sounds great!
  5:13pm DL in LA:

Outliers. True that.
Avatar 5:13pm jgrosch:

I used to see Moondog on 6th ave. in the late 60's and early 70's. My dearly departed mother bought several of his poems. I wish I could find them in my mother's house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm chris:

i hate it when i'm marginalized by my own ears
  5:14pm cronbat:

Tom Rush! Have not heard this in decades!
Avatar 5:15pm Listening Out There:

Ron Bass: Good book. You will like. I contributed to the Kickstarter for the Moondog documentary...but have not heard the status of that project for some time...
  5:19pm berbo:

I tried to dig up some information about Moondog here in Madison, but got nowhere. I am not much of a biographer. I have a guess about where he used to live,
  5:19pm jess:

wow I haven't heard this song in ages yes. Wonderful!
  5:19pm ?:

tell'em ,John.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Parq:

Ron, what L/O/T said about the book. I got my copy as a marathon prize years ago and it was my main read in the summer of 2009. It's a lot to get through, but every bit is worth it.
Avatar 5:30pm geezerette:

Invisable Cinema, like what I'm seeing.
Avatar 5:32pm geezerette:

Boy, really missing inflection when texting...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm WillCrete:

Good afternoon! Thanks for the invigorating set of music. That piece by Román Filiú was really quite wonderful: a great sense of space, tension, and energy created in the motion / alternation of those horn passages moving into and across the piano/ drums parts.
Avatar 5:34pm geezerette:

...Plus, total art score from DH Art Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm -Ken:

Tonight's SSD will be a never-before rerun Rerun!
Avatar 5:42pm Fredericks:

Reno Bo sounds like real rock and roll. Don't hear that much these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Irwin:

Everything I've heard by Reno rocks. He's got some decent originals and great covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm common:

yay! wire
Avatar 5:46pm Fredericks:

Gotcha, mb. Those are some weird fruit flies, berbo! We don't have them in New Port Richey. Exception proves the rule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm -Ken:

Nice version of that Wire song!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Irwin:

I haven't heard a bad version of Map Ref by anyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Asheville Jon:

Always great to hear ABBA (the greatest supergroup of all time) on WFMU!
Avatar 5:57pm Listening Out There:

Great piece for marimbas...
Avatar 5:58pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm chris:

much thanks to you for a great show, Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm LunchboxTA:
