Are CD's going to become "obsolete" like records did in the 90's then will they be revived in 30 years as a "compact way to transport and listen to music"? New cars do NOT come with CD players, at least Hondas do not. Pity. "Everybody downloads now" is the thought. I have a shelf with about 200 CDs....just enough to always be able to find something fresh to listen to. AND I have WFMU on my phone through my stereo.

@Neil Having worked at a record store during much of the recent vinyl resurgence, I'd say CDs will definitely come back, at least to a growing sect of diehards. They still have a lot going for them (more permanent than digital, more compact, versatile, and reparable than vinyl, plus the endless quality debate). I can even imagine a second wave of Nuggets-style rediscovery of tiny alt-bands who self-produced CDs.

@Linda Lee It's already happening over here too, though more stores are balking at this one. It's also worth noting that, in the numbers for cassette sales, a disproportionate amount is thanks to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks.

...true CD's have been maligned, but it's mostly the playback device at fault if you have a proper CD player you will hear stuff you never heard before, it's rather surprising, what a difference it makes. Then there are some recordings that are 'CD only' so those will always have value.

They're a series of enjoyable scifi comedies linked to the Marvel brand. The main character is a human whose only links to earth are a Walkman and a series of classic rock mixtapes made by his mother. The soundtracks, subsequently, have been released on cassette, with faux-handwritten artwork.

Two cents on cassettes: Hanging on for dear life to cassettes my late sister's bf made for her. First letter of each song spelled out a message to her, stylishly written with love on the cassette cover liners. Priceless keepsakes, along with a double cassette player :)
