Morning all! Checking in one more time before heading off to Denmark for a week!
  9:09am John in Bklyn:

Hiya, Joe! Great spooky eclipse background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am annie:

sem, i have a small #9 panel for my viewing. might just hold it to the lens of the camera.. i'm hoping to get some nice leaf-shots, too.. of course my PLANS always miss the mark of the reality.. maybe i'll just practice my sun-gazing.
Avatar 9:11am themutante:

Damn, smooth start.
Avatar 9:11am Joe McG:

Don't stare into the eclipse. You'll GO BLIND! Good morning, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Vincent Nifigance:

Don't stare into the eclipse while masturbating, you'll go blind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am The Oscar:

@Vincent That's actually an urban myth, but if you cover your eyes, your palms will turn hairy.
Avatar 9:15am themutante:

Don't stare into the eclipes while masturbating and finger-blasting yourself, you'll go blind and not give a flying...
  9:15am John in Bklyn:

Even some welding goggles aren't safe to use for viewing. Ask your pharmacist if a welder's helmet is right for you.

The Catholic Church considers Eclipse Staring to be a form a self abuse and therefore a no-no in the eyes of God. Ask your pharmacist (or Pope) if you want to be sure.
Avatar 9:19am themutante:

Wrongly, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Webhamster Henry:

No sarcasm in this track at all. Think it only got worse as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am steveo:

Wikipedia, re Moonshadow: "When Yusuf appeared on The Chris Isaak Hour in 2009, he said of this song: "I was on a holiday in Spain. I was a kid from the West End (of London) - bright lights, et cetera. I never got to see the moon on its own in the dark, there were always streetlamps. So there I was on the edge of the water on a beautiful night with the moon glowing, and suddenly I looked down and saw my shadow. I thought that was so cool, I'd never seen it before."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Guido from Cologne:

Good Morning Joe! Happy Eclipse!
Southern Mark Smith:
is this intented as an assault?
  9:53am BnowB:

lol@mutant so sarcastic reminds me of the band "sammy" and "laptop" singer Jesse Hartman quite the forgotten genius.
  9:54am BnowB:

fun fact- the guitar player for the band "sammy" went on to design dre beat headphones. That record does have a sick sound. out of print but you can find some stuff.

Avatar 10:01am Joe McG:

Except for "Repetition," this is my favorite Fall song. "What's a computer?!"
Avatar 10:02am themutante:

The Fall have such a canon, it's hard to know where to begin. The start is the obvious answer, I guess.
  10:02am JakeGould:

What does eating oneself fitter have to do with an eclipse?
Avatar 10:02am themutante:

We are off the eclipse lark right now, it was just the first set.

Avatar 10:08am themutante:

Avatar 10:11am Joe McG:

@steveo: I like "Night Moves," too, but the early Seger System stuff is killer diller.

  10:14am BnowB:

I love this track. by the duke... i could weep. Real Men Cry! (but just a little) hehe
  10:15am melinda:

Going back a few songs, I heard I Love to Read All British Mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Ike:

No, Duke, no! There was never any perfect lost era of the past! The past was crap! Nostalgia kills. You just want to be a kid again, don't you, Duke? Crying is cool, though. Get some therapy, man! You can cry in the shrink's office about your lost childhood. LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am steveo:

Joe, It's hard to even know if I like Night Moves, I've heard it so many times. I wasn't even aware of the System, so, as usual, thanks for the education.

Yes @annie, great scene especially if you saw it in a Classic Comic!

Loved the Monks following the Fall Joe. Watching the doc on the Monks all I could think about was..these guys sound like the Fall!
Avatar 10:21am themutante:

Love the Gil. Can't have enough of him. I find his live recordings cast shade on the studio ones. Black Wax is a must watch if you haven't seen it.
Avatar 10:21am Joe McG:

@BnowB: I wonder! @tadpoles: Am I mistaken or didn't the Fall cover a Monks tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Ken From Hyde Park:

Watching old home movies with my mom this morning. Footage of her at a rodeo. Makes me wonder if there are rodeo video games nowadays.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am pantz:

If you're an alt-right, I've heard all that eye protection for the solar eclipse is fake news perpetrated by ANTIFA and CNN. Go ahead and stare directly into the eclipse and show those liberals what for!

Avatar 10:30am themutante:

Black Wax, as I mentioned earlier, really turned me on to Gil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am The Oscar:

I want to say they covered either "I Hate You" or "Monk Time?" Or maybe a medley?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Guido from Cologne:

So 1967 is post :-)
Swag For Life Member 10:33am tadpoles:

Can't remember either Joe but the Fall do great covers of Wanda Jackson's "Funnel of Love" and the Move's "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" - excellent!

@pantz - And when they're waiting in line at the emergency room, they need to make it clear they don't want Obamacare paying for their treatment.
Avatar 10:36am dan in wisconsin:

The Fall do a great cover of R. Dean Taylor's "There's a Ghost in My House" also.
  10:37am BnowB:

without glasses you mine as well sit on sofa and watch it on tv. no no .. no i will at least go out, even in the rain, to feel it. To feel the sun go away; 70% a Feeeeeeeeling..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am The Oscar:

I remember absconding with my dad's copy of the Nuggets box set and listening to it driving to high school. When I hit "Complication" by the Monks, I was so stunned that I just kept skipping back to the beginning and listening to it again (and this was BEFORE I knew about their look or their story!). I must've listened to that song 15 times that day, at least.

At the record store I used to work at, we arrived one morning to find a MASSIVE box of vintage Police pins and buttons that someone had left for us. As the one who had to create eBay listings for each one, I got VERY good at recognizing which iconography matched which albums/singles. It took the better part of a year to go through them all.

I think I saw clips from it in school. Always been curious to watch it all, but the DVD is so expensive.
  10:48am Listener Alexandra:

Beautiful show so far, Joe...been up since the Jazz Butcher :-)
  10:49am melinda:

I watched Cosmos but don't remember much. Except that me and my classmates thought Carl was sort of goofy. I appreciated him more as I got older and read some of his books.
Avatar 10:49am Sem Chumbo:

whiplash, Joe! The Police to Vangelis to Patsy.

Is this a mind control experiment, 'cause I really like it :-D
Avatar 10:49am dan in wisconsin:

Gotta make sure it's the "Esper Edition" though....
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

I'd like to see it sometime, I'll have to see if it's on the Internet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am annie:

damn, i always come in too early on...."wonderin'"
Avatar 10:51am Joe McG:

@Sem: I like "Single File" since it gives me an excuse to throw curveballs at you. :) @Alex: Howdy!
Avatar 10:51am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Cosmos & In Search Of... were the best of television.
Also, what melinda said. Sagan wasn't respected amongst us kids at the time due to his goofy speech inflections. We'd all practice the perfect delivery of "BILLIONS and BILLIONS..."
  10:51am melinda:

@joe it's gotta be there somewhere

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Brian C.:

Hey JMcG, thanks for giving the 'new" Monks some airplay, I just purchased the EP Saturday. Love Eddie's bass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am The Oscar:

@Rev My girlfriend got me the complete series of In Search Of for Christmas a couple of years back, and it's one of my most treasured DVD sets. The Salem Witch episode (about the witches in Salem in the '70s, not the trials) is my favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am The Oscar:

Also ERIC!!

Thanks for reminding me of Cosmos, I'm watching that tonight. R-ga Haha ARGH!

@Brian: Yeah, it sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am jillydg:

Yes Joe so fantastic. That whole performance. I had revisited Stop Making Sense on a big screen upstate NY the week before and was poised to go nuts. (Folks, SMS is playing at BAM this month. HIGHLY recommend re-seeing it big.)

@BnowB: Thanks for reminding me of “Sammy” and mentioning the “Beats” connection. Luke Wood is a fella!
  11:21am paul:

@Joe, LOL. Creque Alley was autobiographical like the Mott song.
  11:23am jess:

how about some Mescaleros?
Avatar 11:24am Joe McG:

@paul: I know, I'm just joshing you. :) I think that would be a great WFMU premium, bands singing about themselves.
  11:24am BnowB:

@jake... cool :) glad you enjoyed the trivia cool music sammy great power pop band
  11:25am BnowB:

saganseries.com free sample.. looking for free. its on some pay sites... hulu not netflix
  11:26am JakeGould:

Yeah, but when you say, “fun fact- the guitar player for the band "sammy" went on to design dre beat headphones.” That is a wild misrepresentation. Luke Wood is the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Beats by Dre. He’s a “suit” in jeans and a t-shirt.
  11:27am medson:

Wow this song randomly played yesterday on my iTunes. NICE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Parq:

Joe Strummer's birthday, is it? A chain bookstore has an annual 50% off sale for Criterion Collection releases, and I bought Mystery Train. Just watched it this past weekend. Gets better every time I see it, and Joe is a big reason why.
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@medson: Cool! @Parq: Great movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Carmichael:

Oh hey, Annie. I was busy reading all the comments. Are you still in Asheville?

“Mystery Train” is a beautiful film. Period.
  11:31am BnowB:

ahh it is on netflix www.netflix.com...
  11:33am BnowB:

Jake Mould lol yea your right when you put it that way. he a real player and his music is so opposite to the max. It laughs at all that. Wild right :) one for us creeps in jeans and a T-shirt

Damn. That Faith Healer song is great!
Avatar 11:34am Joe McG:

Next song goes out to Annie (and her aeroplane).

  11:35am BnowB:

never mind Astral-Plane lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Parq:

The Aeroplanes track has that 80s power pop backbeat that always just kills me.
Avatar 11:40am Joe McG:

@Parq: It sure was big then. This comp has it in spades!
  11:44am paul:

Same as the Blue Aeroplanes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am annie:

yes, carm, i am..... 98% totality, too..
  11:47am JakeGould:

NYC/NJ is still only 70% or so totality. No need for glasses since it’s gonna be dim but not completely dark. And please, do not follow my advice… I’m just some guy who has typed words on a computer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am doctorjazz:

My understanding is that even if we're not fully total, you shouldn't look directly at it.
Swag For Life Member 11:50am tadpoles:

I thought the Post Office did a neat job with their heat sensitive Eclipse stamps. Thanks for your show today Joe. Very neat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am steveo:

but what if the moon moons extra???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am annie:

yeah, joe, thanks for the show!! always glad to listen..
  11:52am BnowB:

Amazing show joe, thank you kindly young man! Have a good afternoon without the sun. Salutè
Avatar 11:52am Sem Chumbo:

Personally, I am gonna take advice of an ostrich pal of mine and bury my head in the sand. Sounds easy enough.

Thanks, Joe, McGaskoes, been a blue tongue time today. Later
  11:52am JakeGould:

It’s not magic. You shouldn’t look directly in the sun to begin with. And in the case of a total eclipse, the darkness expands your pupils and if you stare, you run the risk of piles of sun pouring into your eyeballs when the moon moves away.

Like if you go to the eye doctor and they give you those eyedrops to expand your pupils and you can’t eb in drect sunlight? Same thing.
  11:53am paul:

Use your phone's selfie feature.
  11:53am JakeGould:

And again, don’t follow my advice.
  11:54am BnowB:

so no telescope direct in Georgia sun 100%? ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am steveo:

mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
  11:55am JakeGould:

@paul: Yeah, your phone is reflective glass. Reflected light in your eyes can still cause damage.
Avatar 11:55am Joe McG:

Thanks for listening and commenting everyone~! Have yourself a nice eclipse. Bright side: If you go blind, you can still listen to FMU.
  11:55am BnowB:

perfect solution. magnifying glass off a mirror?
  11:56am JakeGould:

@Joe: Thanks for the show!

Fine show. I'm not gonna look at it either. I have friends in two states travelling to neighboring states so they can be there for it. So they can stand in a huge crowd not looking at it?
