Hi Joe and people!
  9:05am wendy del formaggio:

Joe! This track just taught me "Bela Lugosi's Dead" starts as a bossa nova. Who knew?!
  9:06am SeanG:

Howdy Joe and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Joe and Noisophiles. Swag arrived, so it's a very happy Monday!
  9:08am John in Bklyn:

Hiya, Joe and Surface Noisers! That intro always reminds me of Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo! Do you think Stan Ridgway was influenced by The Muppets??
Avatar 9:09am V Priceless:

hiya Joe!

@Wendy Holy cow, I never even realized that! Context!

Avatar 9:12am BnowB:

I used to live with a man from Brazil. ooo la la lol

I'm fluent in Portuguese, thus feeling right at home with the current track.
Avatar 9:14am BnowB:

Abraços from NYC :)
  9:16am Phillio:

Visited São Paulo again about 2 years ago (it had been forever). It's like my wife had her own personal travel guide/translator the whole time. I'd love togo back again.

Orfeu Negro! My favorite soundtrack!
  9:17am mauri:

a sunny day and bossa. a cool wind. squirrels chasing each other in a pine tree.

Bom Dia, Joe. So hard to get to work in time for the Yeps on a Monday....
  9:18am Phillio:

Wonder if Joe has anything off Jobim's "Stone Flowers" on deck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am steveo:

Or are they the yips? I can never remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Passaic River Blues:

"Orfeu Negro" is such a good movie.
  9:22am JakeGould:

Blame the Monday on the bossa nova.
Avatar 9:25am Joe McG:

Bom dia! Starting today in a mellow, mellow mood. Glad you could join me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am JP from KC:

Avatar 9:29am KP:

Hello, Joe McGasko!
  9:30am jess:

I'm loving this music too. Good morning coffee music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am doctorjazz:

Herbie Mann must have really liked this tune (I always liked it as well). The Modern Jazz Quartet with Laurindo Almeida did a nice version of this.
Avatar 9:33am BnowB:

this set is beautiful ... i think my blood pressure dropped to normal
Swag For Life Member 9:34am tadpoles:

I always thought Bossa Nova translated as "New Wave"!

But the only thing I could find on the internets is "New Tendency" .. either works for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Uncle Michael:

Joe, I approve of your recent Bossa-jag.
Avatar 9:36am Dominick:

very nice
Avatar 9:37am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. Just doing a crossword, clue was bossa nova hit in the Sixties (3,4,4,7)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am doctorjazz:

Just got my FMU premium, can't wait to listen to it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am pantz:

What a great Sinatra song! I know he was a grade A jerk, but man could his voice emote.
Avatar 9:40am BnowB:

My fav....Jobim & How insensitive.
I remember David Lynch using this in a yard scene with a lounge chair. Lost highway?
  9:40am John in Bklyn:

The Chairman did a great job with Bossas. I mean, to have lived and loved the way Frank did...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am doctorjazz:

Sorry, just don't "get" Sinatra, doesn't do anything for me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Planet Tyler:

Astrid cant be too far behind. But which one!!
  9:42am Phillio:

Not as lush (or maybe lush in a different way?), but would love to hear Caetano Veloso's "Saudosismo".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am pantz:

@doctorjazz Guess it's like the Blues. Some people just don't get it, others listen to nothing else.
  9:43am Stanley:

Hi Joe. Enjoying a very lazy bank holiday afternoon here in England.
Hi Brian. is it sunny and hot where you are?
  9:43am Phillio:

Oh man, Nara Leão..
  9:43am melinda:

Great set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Planet Tyler:

What a nice morning of beleza tropical. I can fave this show already
  9:44am Phillio:

Elis!! This set is *ezcellent*!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Itzall Ablurr:

Too early for a Caipirinha? I've got the cachaça honey, if you got the limes! Great show this morning, Mr. McG! Monday suave...
Avatar 9:44am Yair Yona:

Joe - thanks for the fun music. we're rocking here in Tel Aviv!
  9:45am John in Bklyn:

Elis was the greatest. Check out the DVD from 1973, MPB Especial. It's just her and a trio... and 500 cigarettes.
Avatar 9:45am Brian in UK:

Stanley, it is always sunny and hot where I am. They cancelled the racing in the Isle of Man today though. Did you enjoy the Magnetic Fields?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am steveo:

YES -- that's August for me
Avatar 9:48am βrian:

Cachaça makes my head hurt.

No skies over the isthmus today. Just fog hanging low.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Michele:

Morning Joe! Looking forward to lunching with you today!
  9:49am paul:

Live in south Florida. Would kill for cool weather.
  9:49am Stanley:

The Magic Fingers? Good up to a point, Brian. Bit too twee and whimsical for me but The Prof loved it. (Boy, the weather is good here)
  9:51am paul:

I remember Time Life compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Planet Tyler:

There's some brazilian sci-fi on netflix - it's called "3%"
Avatar 9:54am Brian in UK:

Stanley, I got as far as looking at the seating plan before I ducked out of buying tickets for their Barbican gig.
Avatar 9:55am Rev. Turnip Druid:

[salutes the ISTHMUS.]
  9:55am Stanley:

Swag? Did someone mention swag?
  9:55am Phillio:

Portuguese is definitely a tricky language. I'm lucky to have lived there for long enough and at a young enough age to have learned through total immersion. Brazil has such a deep culture/place/music, etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am annie:

whew! just got in the door, i have a hall pass. sorry 'm late. it's such a joy to know i planned in advance and stashed a cup of coffee in the fridge for my return from the pet-sit. hi everyone!
  9:58am JakeGould:

Already like this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Parq:

"Bullfrog Dressed In Soldier's Clothes" begs a topical reference.
  10:00am Stanley:

That was great and the first time I could make out the words (CF version by Joseph Spence)
  10:02am willcrete:

This Emery Counard tune is so good! I've always wanted to know more about him... but the only think I can find is this one piece on this great Yazoo comp. He has such a cool lending of Trinidadian styles with killer slide technique. His playing is pure velocity of joy. Such good stuff for the morning.
  10:03am CHAD PEARSON:

Great show Joe!
  10:03am Stanley:

The master himself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am doctorjazz:

Love the guitar playing (Spence), vocals are the oddest thing (I'm really a crank this morning, aren't I...)
  10:04am willcrete:

If any listeners happen to know more about Counard, please share what you know. Details are very scarse, For that matter, what does "Why My Craf Vex with Me" mean? I know "vex" is kind of like "mess with." But what is "craf?"
  10:04am Davee:

This sounds a little like Dave Van Ronk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am MD:

Good Morning Freeform World...!!!!
  10:07am John in Bklyn:

Hey CHAD! Woke up too late for Pigeoning this morning.
Avatar 10:10am βrian:

I drank the coffee, Annie. I'm sorry.
Avatar 10:10am βrian:

... and I ate the cold plums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Parq:

By the way, agree with you totally, Joe, about Black Orpheus. Saw it at Film Forum about five years ago. Completely engrossing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am MD:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Passaic River Blues:

@Parq: I saw it at Lincoln Center about 10 years ago, and it still lingers. So beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am annie:

well, brian, it's fine i guess.... i have more plums coming in my groceries friday. hope the coffee was good, i always add sugar to the french press wth the coffee... "pre-press" application.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Parq:

Wow, the steel guitar really sets off this Aretha cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Parq:

And ow a sweet country song about fucking the milkman. Some show, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Parq:

Avatar 10:17am Joe McG:

@Parq: Oh, Parq, you need to re-listen to that one. It's a real heartbreaker about uncaring parents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am pantz:

You're really pulling the heartstrings with this set @Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Parq:

@Joe, right, I got that. One of whom fucks the milkman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am steveo:

well, I picked a poor time to go get some tea and chat in the kitchen, didn't I? I guess later i'll be "doin' the (archive) stream"
Avatar 10:22am slugluv1313:

good morning, Joe and Noisers!
aww man -- this "Who Loves Who" REALLY hits hard! damn
  10:22am Stanley:

A sad and ridiculous song that last song
Avatar 10:22am AbeSomething:

My goodness! "Who Loves Who" just broke me to pieces.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Uncle Michael:

I mistook Bill's voice for Teddy's.
Avatar 10:23am Joe McG:

Curly gave me chills with that song!
  10:24am Stanley:

Sounds like this subject could be a genre in itself
Avatar 10:25am Brian in UK:

Joe, remember the Goombay Dance Band?

The last songs remind me of seeing Mary Gauthier & Jason Isbell, they both say in their sets 'If you are waiting for the happy songs you better leave now'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am ⓔⓘⓚ:

Wait, did I hear that right? Are these lyrics alleging this woman is stealing her friends' men *and* selling herself on the streets? Are there enough hours in the day for that? I wouldn't have the energy for that, personally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am ɨkɛ:

Is that what that 5-Hour Energy stuff is for? If I drink that, will I have the stamina to steal men and whore myself out, too? I've never tried it.
Avatar 10:29am Joe McG:

@Stanley: I think it is! Doris Duke does the all-time killer diller.
Avatar 10:32am slugluv1313:

@ ike (recognize the SUPER KITTY!)
i agree! dudes do it all the time too -- maybe not the whoring out but lyin' and cheatin' etc. etc. etc.
i always gotta wonder who has that much time & energy on their hands!
  10:33am JakeGould:

5 hour energy drink is just a pile of caffeine that makes you shit and pee a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Ken From Hyde Park:

@ ɨkɛ - Better take two, just to be sure.
Avatar 10:36am βrian:

Songs from a suicidal country. Very current, that.
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

@Brian: Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am steveo:

Oh Joe, guess what? We drove by some signs that said HAZELTON this weekend, on our way to Ithaca (which is gorges). That's about where I missed our exit, costing us 30 minutes, but I'm not about to blame that on you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Itzall Ablurr:

One of my first 45s was "Outa Space", another classic from the "other" 5th Beatle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am ⓘⓚⓔ:

I'd get that premium!
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@steveo: You made the right decision to drive away from it. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am steveo:

lol (and to spell it wrong, apparently)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am drr:

Could "craf" be a boat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Love this Jerry Lewis single (see, I'm not always cranky).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Itzall Ablurr:

Surrounded by musical giants, but he can't carry a note in a bucket, even if he's funny tripping over it.
Avatar 10:48am Joe McG:

@drr: Sounds likely! Nice one.
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

@Itzall: But have you heard his Al Jolson impression? ha ha

@drr: Always been mad at them for not pursuing that more.
Avatar 10:57am Cheri Pi:

Did they do that live I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Stevel:

How in hell did I not hear The Church. Yes! Best bagpipe solo ever!

Highway Song will help me recover.
Avatar 11:00am Joe McG:

Another premium idea I have: Rock songs about "the road."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Itzall Ablurr:

Remember when every "Southern Rock" band had their very own "Freebird"? This is Blackfoot's.
  11:02am paul:

Do not include "Life is a Highway" Do include "Thunder Road" by Robert Mitchum
  11:02am Dean:

Quiet World has an entire album, "The Road." Early Steve Hackett band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Uncle Michael:

Bands writing about "the road" is the jumping of the shark.
Avatar 11:03am Cheri Pi:

Joe, the other day I heard on the radio 2 songs back to back both about a guy trying to get home to see his baby, and they kinda count down by distance how close he's getting, until-SUPRISE, he dies before he gets home. and thats the end of the song. I automatically thought of you immediately.
  11:03am melinda:

I love Downtown!
Avatar 11:03am Claw!:

Groundskeeper Willie did the best version of this
Avatar 11:04am Joe McG:

@paul: Ha ha. What about Bob Seger's "Turn the Page"? @Dean: Whoa! Concept LP about The Road! Must check that out. @CP: My kinda tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Itzall Ablurr:

Wasn't there about another 20-30 minutes to go of Blackfoot's "Freebird", er, I mean "Highway Song"?!?
  11:04am Dennis Diken:

"Downtown"...wow. one of the most delectably evocative cuts of all time. with the great Bobby Graham on drums
  11:04am Dean:

How about songs about elevators? Let's see, there's Carla Bley and...and...uh...
Avatar 11:05am Serpico:

Groundskeeper Willie is a hero to us all.
Avatar 11:07am Joe McG:

@Dennis: One of my first favorite songs! I remember being in the back of my parents' car listening to it on the radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Uncle Michael:

Heaven on the Seventh Floor, Dean.
  11:07am paul:

@Joe, yes to Turn the Page. I actually compiled a CD of road songs for Rand Macnally, which they included with their atlas. About 20 years ago.
  11:09am Dean:

Yep, UM. I figured somebody'd think of one. There's Nanci Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime," too, now that I think of it. And the Carla Bley album was about an *escalator*.
  11:10am paul:

Trying to remember the name of the Clash song that starts with "Elevator going up"
Avatar 11:10am Serpico:

isn't there a band called the 13th floor elevators?
  11:11am paul:

Serpico. Yes, "YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Itzall Ablurr:

"Rudy Can't Fail" (Clash)

  11:12am paul:

Thanks, Dean.
Swag For Life Member 11:12am tadpoles:

#Dean... Television Personalities early single about living in a London tower block.."14th Floor".

Sort of about elevators if you think of living in a tower block.
  11:12am Dean:

Heh, Mrs. Miller's Greatest Hits is among the couple dozen LPs in the front room with the turntable. And I'm the dad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Itzall Ablurr:

I've seen him before and it's transcendent. He's still great- saw him a couple of years ago and he killed it. Well, not literally, but maybe this time.

I remember hearing that Harlem shake charted pretty high a few years ago, not sure if it made it to the top 10

Re "the road": I dimly recall doing a road show when I had an hour-long program on the Drummer stream way back when, and it wasn't nearly long enough.
11:22am Larry from Westwood now Chicago:

Wow. What a great live show that must have been.
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

@Krys O.: Now THAT'S some cool Waddy trivia! :)

Brendan Mullen's book about the Masque, Nightmare in Punk Alley includes a proof sheet featuring a bunch of LA punks c.1978, including Charlotte and Belinda of The Go-Go's. Another of the photos is yours truly.

Avatar 11:28am herb.nyc:

just tuned in - yeeeeah, La Go-Go's! i'm pretty sure WLIR aired a live show of theirs, maybe this very one, in early 80s. i mighta taped it. and, John Doe recently played Terry Hall at wfmu. great show (thx for not throwing me out, joe.). in his L.A. punk book, Jane Wiedlin (?) wrote a chapter, and said she was driving and cried when Rodney on the ROQ played their record, hearing her band for the first time on the airwaves. awww.
Avatar 11:28am James in ATL:

Enjoying the show and loving the Go-Go's live! Thank Joe

Avatar 11:30am herb.nyc:

Best underrated LA band, pre-Go-Go's, was The Eyes, featuring Charlotte, DJ Bonebrake, and Joe Ramirez.

Any special reason for this Go-Gos live set? Loving it.

I think this guy from my high school class ended up marrying the bass player, Kathy Valentine. She's 7 years his senior, but hell yeah I would have too.

Not to my knowledge, @Joe McG. Was pleasantly surprised to find myself (and my band!) in the Mullen book.

I'm looking now for an opportunity to hear Masque-era Go-Go's for you. I know somebody who might have the goods.

The Book of Love is Long and Stupid (Mag Fields)?
  11:51am Dean:

@melinda: The band featured in Mullen's book was The Twits. But that was one of many, among them a group called M, not to be confused with the British techno-pop M. M was the first release on Flipside Records. We were dreadful.
