Avatar 12:04am Jeff Conklin:

Morning, all.

@speed I: Care to clarify/expound on that comment?

If I remember correctly, "Mountain Jam" was played on the avant ghetto, right? That was the first time I heard that incredible track.
Avatar 12:08am Jeff Conklin:

@tuner: Indeed!
Avatar 12:09am slugluv1313:

greetings, all
thank you, Jeff!

good selection. rest in peace Gregg.
Thank you Jeff.
Avatar 12:11am Erik in Michigan:

Feeling fortunate to have seen Gregg play with the Allman's a couple times over the years. Once @ the Beacon, and 2x at DTE/Pine Knob, the Shed north of Detroit. ABB always had smoking guitarists, so it was always great to see them.
  12:13am Carmichael:

Being quite senile, i saw the Allmans in SF in the late 70s, and again throughout the decades. Fine bunch of fellas.
  12:13am tuner fish:

Pine Knob! I grew up in Sterling Heights! Although it was called DTE by the time I could go to shows, haha.
Avatar 12:16am Erik in MIchigan:

Nice - Freedom Hill was right in your background...an all time dump haha
  12:17am dbj:

Beautiful start, Jeff. I work for a photo archive and the photographer shot the Allman's and Dead in a jam together in Aug of '72 at The Gaelic Park Sports Centre in the Bronx. I always wondered if that boot was out there. Any idea Jeff?
  12:17am tuner fish:

Oh yeah, been there, too. With that big fighter jet.
  12:20am speed l:

they said it was gonna be allmans show so no women
Avatar 12:21am Jeff Conklin:

@speed: Who said that?
  12:21am speed l:

glad for no donna now

Avatar 12:22am Jeff Conklin:

@DBJ: That was 1971. The Dead set is out there. Incredibly I never knew the Allman's were on that bill?? Link to pictures online?

Avatar 12:25am Erik in MIchigan:

No dead show, but Garcia & Weir were there for some reason...?
Avatar 12:27am Jeff Conklin:

Is the photographer Chuck Pulin? www.gdao.org...
Avatar 12:28am Erik in MIchigan:

Ah, so Dead played in the area the night before, ABB the next night. archive.org...

Bass solos are surprisingly conducive to research.
Avatar 12:31am Jeff Conklin:

They mustve flown into NYC before the big Hartford gig on 7/16

Thank you
Avatar 12:32am Erik in MIchigan:

That's an amazing pic, dbj
  12:33am speed l:

my friend lived next to the fillmore east and he said the loudest band was jefferson airplane
Avatar 12:40am Jeff Conklin:

Hadn't played this segment of this show in a while before today, forgot how stellar this Truckin' jam got
Avatar 12:43am Erik in MIchigan:

The entire band was just on fire in this era. I find myself locking into Billy's playing more - as good as it gets.
  12:44am brycepunk1:

Loving this! Thank you for playing the Dead.
Avatar 12:47am Jennifer_PNW:

So gooooood
  12:47am rw:

Hello! I keep forgetting the Avant Ghetto has moved to a less ghetto time slot. It throws me a little.
  12:47am dbj:

Awesome to see Pulin's contact sheets. Thanks for sharing those Jeff. And to, of course, a perfect soundtrack to end and begin the week.
Avatar 12:49am Jennifer_PNW:

@Erik, so much love for Bill's drumming
Avatar 12:49am Jeff Conklin:

@rw: Been here for months!!
  12:50am rw:

I know. I'm a little slow.
Avatar 12:51am Jeff Conklin:

Yeah, 73 is by far my favorite year. After seeing the doc today, I really wanted to do all GD but I have a very sick track premiere for later so maybe I'll do the all-GD when its least expected.
  12:52am speed l:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am Nardo:

Loving this. Hope to see doc soon. It screened locally on Thursday, but I assumed it would play through weekend. I was wrong.
Avatar 12:53am Jeff Conklin:

Hey, all, throw a "like" at the radio show Facebook page: www.facebook.com...
Avatar 12:54am Erik in MIchigan:

@Jennifer - yeah, makes you appreciate 72-74 so much. But in all era's, he's a master. Listening to Cornell on 5/8, I kinda lost myself listening to him during Scarlet > Fire. Just really beautiful, fluid playing.
Avatar 12:57am Erik in MIchigan:

man, this is so sick
  12:59am Devin:

Other One => Wharf Rat!! Dammnnn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am Santos L. Halper:

Wow, thanks for this extended sequence! Love hearing you on the archive, but looking forward to being up late more often. Summer's here and the time is right...
  1:02am sam:

Great stuff Jeff...thanks. Just finished up listening to Jerry Douglas do Flatt & Scruggs tribute at the Strawberry Music Fest. in Grass Valley,CA, and now listening to the Dead/Jerry is a perfect transition.
Avatar 1:02am Jeff Conklin:

You're all so welcome. I;m so glad you all take this ride with me every week.
Avatar 1:08am Erik in MIchigan:

Thanks man - "southern rock" never sat well with me.
  1:16am Threemoons:

up way past my bedtime. Great set.
Avatar 1:16am Jeff Conklin:

Highly recommend getting this Myrrors record, y'all: themyrrorsbbib.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 1:21am Erik in MIchigan:

2017 has been an insane year for new music.
  1:22am speed l:

i met amir bar lev his wife made a magazine called heeb
  1:25am Tidy666:

Mr Conklin...thank you for your consistent pre 1974 grateful dead service!I can count on it weekly after coming home from playing wit choo choos!
  1:30am Juan:

Hello Mr Conklin, greetings from Baja California again, where a sliver of moon gently lights the hills and island across the bay as it slowly descends into the Pacific horizon, the cats and recent rescue dog lounge peacefully around the place, and I'm carrying a kratom and kava buzz.
And as always while connecting with your show, here I am visualizing how the late night South Manhattan skyline looks like from across the Hudson, and how much I'd love to dig into a Katz pea soup, sandwich and pickles.
In a nutshell, another lovely, mellow Sunday night... holy cow, The Myrrors sound like a spectacular shamanic freakout, flute and bicycle bell in there, to boot!
Avatar 1:34am Jeff Conklin:

@tidy: And I'm the biggest 80s/90s GD proponent there is!
  1:35am Tony Z:

@Erik, I don't understand your dislike of the phrase "southern rock," given Gregg Allman himself was the person who came up with it???
Avatar 1:36am Erik in MIchigan:

Just seems limiting to what they did
Avatar 1:36am Jeff Conklin:

@Tony: Because I mentioned it was too limiting and i stand by it. It also denotes some awful shit that came after the Allmans. Gregg called the term "redundant"
Avatar 1:38am Erik in MIchigan:

And the term got co-opted by shitty bands like Molly Hatchet and 38 special. The ABB was so much bigger than anything that term had to offer.
  1:38am Tidy666:

I hopped on in the 80s...no disrespect...just nice to see consistency!thank you again for your work!
  1:38am Tony Z:

I've read interviews with Gregg that said he was fine with it. I think disowning the phrase would be like saying you don't want to use the phrase "psychedelic rock" because of all the shitty psych bands that came later.
  1:39am Tony Z:

But thanks for explaining. :-)
Avatar 1:40am Jeff Conklin:

It's ok to not like the phrase, and I'll continue to think its limiting, whoever may have coined it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am Aitch:

Great stuff Jeff
  1:44am Tony Z:

Yes, I agree it's limiting, and it's too bad lots of people associate "southern rock" with southern rednecks how like the confederate flag. I like the phrase "southern rock" because it highlights the regional flavor of the Allman's music (both in terms of their influences and actual location). Anyway, I didn't want to debate this. I was just interested in understanding your dislike. Thanks.
Avatar 1:46am Jeff Conklin:

@Tony: All good, man, thanks for chiming in. Discussion is appreciated..
Avatar 1:53am Jennifer_PNW:

Going to have to dig into Mountain Movers very soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am Santos L. Halper:

First heard Mountain Movers on your show a few weeks ago, now seems everyone's playing them : )
Avatar 1:56am Johnny Sal:

I checked out the new self titled Mountain Movers LP, after that track you played last week. Whole thing is great
  2:10am pp:

speaking of that style, Marshall Tucker Band hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps it the flute. Can't be wrong. Heard it in a love song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am Santos L. Halper:

@PP, i happened to hear Jonesy and Xray talking shit about the MTB and that flute today...
Catch the last set later, thanks Jeff.
RIP Gregg, he will be missed down here (writing from his last hometown).
  2:20am Mike tp:

Caught the ABB at The FILLMORE EAST. With ELVIN BISHOP JOHNNY WINTER/RICK DERRINGER and drummer BOBBY CALDWELL OF Captain Beyond fame. One hot night.
  2:25am rw:

Moving away from the computer but will be listening 'til the bitter end. Thanks as always Mr. Conklin! Good night all!
Avatar 2:56am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks for hanging, everyone. Have a great week.
Avatar 11:49am Bob G:
