Ah, good ol' Longmont Potions Castle! Been out of touch with him for a while! Doesn't really sound like the original guy, but like I say, it's been a while! (Not considering the sound disguises, as *some* of it sounds au naturel...)

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:18am Listener Baby:

Your wish is my... Longmont Potion Castle filters his voice through a Digitech RDS 8000 rack-mounted digital delay unit to produce odd sound effects, thus making whoever he has called even more confused.[3]
  11:19am Little Fyodor:

Ah, the original guy was veggie, so maybe that's him! He's made "real" music too, and he's recorded me for stuff I used to collaborate with someone else....
Avatar 11:19am mlsgrrl:

I'm such a nerd for this stuff. I love it.

Mike, You ever hear The Musacha Tapes? Jerky Boys rip off but worth a listen.
Avatar 12:10pm Juke Joint Jonny:

I find it refreshing, but I get if it wears on people. i would not be a fan of two hours of NRBQ for example, just never drank the Kool-Aid on that one, but I can imagine Michael doing a whole show and a lot of peeps would loooove it.
  12:11pm Elvis Costello:

I am very unhappy that my name has been used as a promotion for this show. I often listen to the Michael Shelley Show while I brush my teeth in England. He usually has such fine taste in music. I have been trying to brush my teeth to this, but they are clenched in anger because my name was used to promote something called Potions.
Avatar 12:12pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Who brushes their teeth in England!? Fake news.
  12:13pm Elvis Costello:

I'm sure that this stuff is funny to your American sensibilities, but to my refined English tastes, it just doesn't hold a candle to the great Peter Sellers or Spike Milligan.
Avatar 12:13pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Refined English taste = Benny Hill
  12:14pm Elvis Costello:

Oh for a Derek and Clive record. For that, I would gladly offer my name for promotion.
  12:14pm Kim Shattuck:

This sucks...I was looking forward to hearing an awesome Elvis Costello interview.
  12:14pm Elvis Costello:

LOL British teeth jokes as well now. this board's got it all
  12:17pm making:

So the last five minutes of today's show will be nothing but #1 hits, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Fuzzy:

Stop trying to get me in trouble, Kim!
  12:18pm lloyd michigan:

Are you really banned from SNL for life?
  12:19pm Elvis Costello:

Momufuku? I would say that I started to suck after Imperial Bedroom. After that, I just stopped caring for awhile. But, you know, a lot of bands at that time started to suck too, so it was just part of that trend at the time.
  12:19pm Bruce Thomas:

Hi El, I know you despise me, but let's face it, like a listener mentioned above, your music has been boring since you fired me. How's about you dump the jazz singer, get miserable and angry like a proper English chap, and we make some great music again?
  12:20pm Elvis Costello:

SNL banned me for life. I'm just that cool, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

The end of this show will be Elvis saying“I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen, but there’s no reason to do these calls here"
  12:21pm Elvis Costello:

Hey Bruce. I know what you're saying but from my point of view, you were a pain in the ass. So, it's true that when you left, I got less angry and miserable.
  12:22pm lloyd michigan:

I have hangover this morning with a personality.
  12:23pm Elvis Costello:

And by the way, Bruce. No hard feelings here. I went on to make a billion dollars. You're fishing around these lame comments sections looking for handouts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Fuzzy:

Why aren't these other fakes aka'd? Why you gotta single me out? I mouse pledged for this? Lame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

The real show is in the comments
  12:25pm lloyd michigan:

Today it is, Aaron.

Is he the Johnny B who along with Chisy graffitied all over Astoria?
  12:30pm Bruce Thomas:

C'mon, El, if you were so happy with those billions, you wouldn't be spending so much time on the comments board of a community radio station. Wouldn't things be better if you were out getting sloppy drunk and porking every hot new wave piece that came your way, just like in the old days?
  12:30pm Marc15:

"You are all animals and for God's sake act like it"
  12:35pm Elvis Costello:

You're right, Bruce. It's so depressing here in my mansion brushing my teeth in my silk robe, (gifted to me by the President of China after our weekend in the mythical Communist Presidential sex palace). I guess you're happier getting sloppy drunk, but I can afford to have my drugs delivered.

Too bad you can't play most of their calls on your show.
Avatar 12:37pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Well, thankfully fellow music lovers, Rex will be by soon to elevate the tone.
  12:38pm Clarke:

no. rex is interviewing elvis costello!!

As they say here in England, it's better than Fabio!

Glad to hear Swap Shop clips. Not so pissed off anymore.
Avatar 12:40pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Derek and Clive would hit the spot right now, Elvis, but the c***s at the FCC might take issue.

Red’s gonna put the ZZs on your butt cheeks!
  12:41pm Clarke:

wow - star-studded!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm chad from oregon:

The best part of the show today is that it isn't being interrupted every two minutes by awful show ids.
  12:43pm david from ks.:

,,,,,X for Excellent !?
  12:44pm Clarke:

no, chad, there will be five minutes of ID's at the end of the show!!
Avatar 12:44pm Lopez:

I can't believe Red from the Tube Bar was playing when I turned on the radio! Outstanding work - I've loved these recordings since a friend had a cassette in the early '90s!
  12:44pm JakeGould:

Wait… So Michael Shelley and Jim Fields pranked?
  12:45pm JakeGould:

Al… Kahollic… Is there an Al Kahollic in here!
  12:46pm PorpoiseJerky:

I gotta find our old tapes. We used to call folks and tell them they won a radio station contest. We would get ppl to sing the national anthem.
  12:47pm Clarke:

yes - the prank where you have to give your number for them to call back could get one into some trouble!
  12:48pm Bruce Thomas:

Ok, El, stick with your tedious classical and jazz excursions to prove you're a "serious" artist, I'll be playing Motown and Beatles covers at the every crappy working men's club in Barking, Bromley, and Barnet, and be having a much better time.
  12:48pm PorpoiseJerky:

Stu. Pit.
Avatar 12:49pm Lopez:

Back in the day a couple of friends and I were pranking random numbers when we hit an answering machine. We were having a teenage drunken party in my friends basement so we all kept redialing the number and filled up the machine with G-rated stuff like "yeah we're drunk! You should be partying with us!"
Somebody wrote the number down and for years when we were hanging out we would call the same answering machine and let this stranger know we were all toasting them. I always wonder who this person was
  12:50pm Clarke:

that was YOU, LopeZ!!!!!!?????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm joe mulligan:

Sam Kidel from the UK does a prank to customer service reps by playing modified hold music and confusing the heck out of them. "Disruptive Muzak" is a whole album of it
  12:52pm Clarke:

honestly - NO FOOLIN' - i think this was one of the most GENIUS shows i have ever heard -
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Frank Above:

I love that OJ call.
  12:52pm Elvis Costello:

Really, Bruce? I thought being 60 and playing in a pub in Barking for shillings meant you were a loser, not a serious artist. I would go look it up in my dictionary, but it's in the library of my mansion and I don't feel like walking down the enormous staircase right now.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Frank Above:

  12:56pm Marc15:

So no Elvis Costello interview?
  12:56pm noel:

Totally confused How old was this show? Maxwell's gone for years, Joe South dead since 2012. FMU's been plugging Elvis for months so why?
  12:56pm Clarke:

red's bar was from the 50's
Avatar 12:57pm Marc Francis:

Well, that was a nice reminder of the downside of freeform radio...
  12:57pm Elvis Costello:

Often, as I fly around in my private jet, I look out the window at the streets of Bromley and wonder what it would be like to have to actually, you know, show up to a lame gastropub to play bass for Huey and the Blues cover band and hope they don't notice me stealing the remnants of the pints leftover when the customers leave because they'd rather leave their drinks than listen to your lousy bass playing.
  12:57pm Joe R.:

Well, I'm disappointed that EC didn't appear on the show and feel dumb for falling for the prank. And even though I tuned out of the show (not my cup of tea, that happens), I have to give Michael an A+ for concept and execution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm ChrisB.:

Prank phone calls are the least of our concerns these days. Great April Fools joke.
  1:02pm Bruce Thomas:

Ah, El, I might believe that if you hadn't hired the bloke from Cracker to duplicate my whole style of playing. But enjoy those comical opera singing demonstrations with your steadily dwindling audience!
  1:02pm Clarke:

  2:08pm Matt:

Just how stupid do you have to be to get mad about this? Did ya REALLY think Elvis Costello was gonna be on WFMU, on APRIL FOOLS DAY no less? Anybody who legitimately got mad about this show had absolutely no right to. Better luck next time, dipsticks!
Avatar 4:08pm Marc Francis:

@Matt: Dave Davies is way bigger than Elvis Costello. And I am listening to an interview with him on WFMU right now. On April Fools Day.
  3:57am david from ks.:

Elvis Costello !!! You!!! Should be buried alive for what You did to Joni Mitchell`s composition, 'Edith and the Kingpin' !!! You did not need a delay device to ruin that recording for life ! I cannot listen to that song anymore without experiencing PTSD ! I hope You are happy with what You did to ruin a soul into a life of of drug addiction and destroying all the work a writer put into a song that did have meaningful lyrics. You actually sang a nightmare and permanently ruined that composition ! It should have been marked with a warning sticker!
