goodmorning joe and all.

Hello Joe!
This is going to be a thrill!
  9:08am Will:

Joe, that was like the best thing you've ever played.
  9:09am Brendan:

Ta Hu Wa Ha Wai to you and everyone Joe . Not sure what it means but it sounds friendly.
Avatar 9:09am bobdoesthings:

oh wait... is this the random pull from shelves day?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Guido from Cologne:

i was about to say thiis is choice by beauty of record cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am melinda:

I forgot all about random day! heel slaps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am annie:

happy happy happy.
Avatar 9:12am V Priceless:

Mornin' Joe!
Avatar 9:13am Joe McG:

Hi, everybody, welcome to the Random Pull special. I've never heard any of these records and so far they are sounding pretty good!
Avatar 9:14am bobdoesthings:

almost forgot you were doing this Joe! nice! my question is .. how "random" is random - like close your eyes dont read anything pick a random track random? or are your eyes open and you're reading album titles and song titles and crossing your fingers?
Avatar 9:16am Joe McG:

@bob: Oh, I'm definitely looking at covers and song titles. Then I just pick one!
Avatar 9:17am bobdoesthings:

@joe - ahh okay. fair nuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

Sounding good, Joe. I trust you're including Michele's name on the patent application.
Avatar 9:18am Joe McG:

This particular record has a caveman on the cover swinging a bone while the band, naked, hunker down on the beach!
Avatar 9:19am Joe McG:

@ken: Michele couldn't be here today because she is making art!
  9:25am Blix:

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the show, but you do realize that this show sounds a lot like your other shows. Maybe you haven't been working as hard as we thought all this time? Does the DJ select the library or does the library select the DJ?
Avatar 9:26am Joe McG:

@Blix: Well, I guess I would gravitate to things that I look appealing to me naturally.
Avatar 9:28am Joe McG:

@Blix: For instance, I saw a lot of free-jazz looking saxophone records this morning in the stacks. I'm not really going to select those since it's likely I won't like 'em.
Avatar 9:29am MFOOZ:

This random mix sound a lot like my personal collection. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Ken From Hyde Park:

This might be covered under #6934846. "Method of generating unpredictable and auditable random numbers." www.google.com... Maybe your idea has the novelty of the numbers being musical numbers and not number numbers?
Avatar 9:31am Joe McG:

@MFOOZ: Ha ha~!
  9:34am Blix:

It's odd because I have yet to hear a clunker yet. Maybe you intuitively have a great ear for things you haven't heard. I'd have picked something terrible by now. Maybe like that scene in Twin Peak where Cooper has the deputy throw rocks at a soda bottle when suspects' names are said aloud.
Avatar 9:40am MFOOZ:

"Summertime:" Did he really burp and say "excuse me?"
  9:41am James F:

mornin joe! looking forward to this set!!!
Avatar 9:42am PKNY:

@MFOOZ - I assume with the arrangement of the song, he attempted to do a Billy Stewart tongue roll while a little gassy.
Avatar 9:43am Joe McG:

I think PKNY might have it.
  9:43am JakeGould:

Artists burp:
  9:43am Blix:

  9:44am herb.nyc:

Just tuned in- vg version of "summertime"
  9:44am JakeGould:

Nitzinger rocks! I'm doing shots at work right now. Wooooooiioooooioooooooo!
Avatar 9:45am Joe McG:

Wow, that Nitzinger really smokes, gonna have to check out the rest of that one!
  9:46am JakeGould:

This "Christine" is good but that band name.
  9:47am herb.nyc:

(Aside- Ken and Liz, plus his dog, were in my dream last night. Not you, Joe. Where'd you go?)
Avatar 9:48am Joe McG:

@jake: I agree with you! Nice power pop! Bad name! @herb: I was getting a sandwich.
  9:50am JakeGould:

Ed Haynes is no Hasil Adkins or Phil Ochs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am melinda:

I thought maybe Upangybottom was selected for the name.
  9:50am herb.nyc:

Spk'ng of Christine, "Christine" opens at Film Forum this Friday
  9:50am Brendan:

Thinking of titles for this week's episode:
Off the Cuff, Winging It,Shootin' From the Hip, Bouncing Tone Arm, Sh** Happens, Random Surface Noise Generator...
Anyway its going swimmingly.
Avatar 9:51am V Priceless:

FIRES and never misses...not SHOOTS - d'oh!
Avatar 9:52am Joe McG:

@melinda: Mostly, and the cover of them running down the street being chases by fans! @Brendan: I like "Random Surface Noise Generator"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Ken From Hyde Park:

Possible marathon or holiday gimmick: Ask listeners to send in four or five random selections from their collections and the DJ plays them in random order.
  9:54am Blix:

How many bad ideas make their way into this Tete Noires song?
Avatar 9:54am bobdoesthings:

@ken - there might be a fatal flaw there ..
Avatar 9:55am Joe McG:

@Blix: You ain't kiddin'! That was terrible.
  9:55am JakeGould:

@Ken: That might result in listeners "randomly" selecting their own band's tracks which nobody wants.
Avatar 9:56am PKNY:

@JakeGould - we would have to supply Trump-style 'extreme vetting' to make sure that doesn't happen.
  9:57am JakeGould:

Despite my grousing I really like this show. I know the pain lasts only a few minutes and maybe some joy can appear later on.
Avatar 9:59am PKNY:

@Joe - you could always do a show modeled after Mass Appeal's Rhythm Roulette. Instead of making beats with record picked while blindfolded, you could do a set (or a whole show) doing the same --> massappeal.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Ken From Hyde Park:

@herb - Lucky for you that your dream wasn't a gorilla stalking you on stage.
Avatar 10:00am Joe McG:

@Jake: You, grousing? Crazy! @PKNY: Not a bad idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Guido from Cologne:

I own this "Patriarchs of Garage Rock".
It was a random purchase ... just for the cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, gang!
Avatar 10:08am Joe McG:

@Guido: They look like big bad bikers on it! Hey Greg! Welcome to my mess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Guido from Cologne:

But considering the body proportions (legs) thy must have been small guys.
  10:14am JakeGould:

Is this the "Hey! I just bought a synth!"
part of the mix?
Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

@Jake: Possibly so!
  10:15am JakeGould:

  10:16am rw:

  10:30am djsheilab:

Morning Joe + gang! Just wanted to say how much I adored the last set. What a trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Passaic River Blues:

This mutual discovery random special should be part of regular Surface Noise programming.
Avatar 10:34am Cheri Pi:

Good morning Yip-Yippers
Avatar 10:35am Joe McG:

Hi, Sheila B! What a weird show this is, but I'm having fun! @PRB: Maybe I'll make it a reoccurring feature! @CP: Hey Cheri Pi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Stevel:

Yip yip back atcha, Cheri Pi.

I'll vote in favor of The Clintons. Not sure how they found the time to record with all of that campaigning and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Ken From Hyde Park:

News item I read today: "On this day in 1987, the song 'Here I Go Again' by English hard-rock group Whitesnake tops the Billboard pop singles chart in the United States."
  10:37am joe:

I'm sure you find out hanging around the station is friends with this band :)
  10:37am Joe:

'ello folks
  10:37am djsheilab:

Oh my god! What is this slice of genius?
Avatar 10:39am Joe McG:

@SB: Your guess is as good as mine!
  10:39am djsheilab:

I was feeling so blue after last night's nastiness, but this record has made it all better. Thank you Joe + Little Kirsty!!
Avatar 10:39am bobdoesthings:

Christopher Columbus was a monster. google Christopher Columbus truth or atrocities (etc) .. horrrrribly evil
  10:39am Joe:

wow I missed so many words in that post. what I meant to say was that I'm sure you will find that someone around the station is friends with half the band. meaning the Clintons that is.
  10:39am JakeGould:

Little Miss Dynamite has the greatest speech impediment!
  10:40am JtotheK:

Good Morning everyone. Enjoying the brave radio program today!

  10:42am mrmucho:

happy to be listening to your show live for once, Joe

This set is ridiculously good! Joe McG must have a pact with the devil--The devil of awesome radio!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Passaic River Blues:

This Reactors single is dope.
  10:44am djsheilab:

Thanks for saying that @Stevel!
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

Stevel is right on so many counts! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am JP from KC:

@Bobdoesthings, it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who espouses this point of view every October. My wife and I refer to it as "National Genocide of Native Peoples Day"
  10:46am JakeGould:

This xylophone.
Avatar 10:46am bobdoesthings:

@JPfromKC - yupp.. it's horrendous. It's baffling we celebrate him - I guess people are like "shhhhh some of us get a day off!" I dunno.. maybe we can keep the holiday and just call it..uhhh October Day?!
  10:49am JakeGould:

Every holiday is horrible and filled with death. Okay fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am JP from KC:

I was just reading on Wikipedia that a few states do not observe. South Dakota Celebrates "Native American Day" on the same date, Hawaii calls it "Discoverers' Day" and celebrates the Polynesian discoverers of the Pacific Islands, and Oregon just flat out doesn't recognize it at all.
  10:50am mrmucho:

this is a well done neo rockabilly track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am JP from KC:

If we were to replace it with another holiday, I'd advocate making South Dakota's Native American Day a national thing. We certainly owe them a hell of a lot more than a bank holiday, but it's a start.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am JP from KC:

What year is this Red Beat track from? It's very Clash-y.
  10:55am mrmucho:

this Red Beat track is '81 according to discogs. Like Go4 on an off day.

Hey Joe,,,What's you know??? Hello Class!
  10:57am steve:

this whole show has been incredibly entertaining
  10:57am Blix:

Red Beat song could've easily been off of one of those wonderful Messethetics releases from a few years ago.
Avatar 10:58am Joe McG:

Thanks, Steve!
  11:02am Tamar:

WFMU's own Belinda (Greasy Kid Stuff) was in Silly Pillow!
  11:02am rw:

This show sounds a little like WFMU in general and a little like Surface Noise in general but run through Google translate or something.
  11:06am rw:

Joe, you're only at 1%! I'm sending in a pledge and then I gotta head off to work.
  11:09am melinda:

Liona Boyd is good.
Avatar 11:09am Joe McG:

Thanks, rw, much appreciated!
Avatar 11:09am bobdoesthings:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Passaic River Blues:

I'll listen to endless variations on Satie's Gymnopedie.
  11:11am melinda:

This is one of my favorite classical pieces, too. When I was growing up we had a Liona Boyd album but it had no Satie.
  11:11am Dean:

There, gave a nudge (I hope) beyond 1%. If it's on the record, play Stanley Myer's "Cavatina" performed by Body. It's the theme from "The Deer Hunter."
  11:12am Dean:

Body, Boyd, eh, what's the diff? Froyd.
Avatar 11:13am Joe McG:

Hey thanks, Dean, appreciate the nudge! I'm stinking up the joint during this fundraiser.
  11:14am Joe stalvey:

My humble opinion: Show-specific pledges are a bad idea. Most listeners (generalizing here excuse plz) listen to the station, not to a specific dj, although heavy listeners likely all have their favorite shows. Put one meter on the whole fund drive and have every pledge help reach that one goal; it feels wrong to pit shows against each other.
  11:15am rw:

My pleasure Mr McGasko! I know it's kind of a measly pledge but I'm trying to spread it around. Thanks for all the work you and the others put in at WFMU!
Avatar 11:15am Joe McG:

@Joe: Yes, I'm sorry to bellyache! As long as everyone supports the station, I don't care if my total is -1.
  11:15am rw:

Joe stalvey, there's an option for that on the pledge page.
  11:16am rw:

Okay, now I'm late for work. Thanks Joe! Later kids!
  11:16am mrmucho:

that Lang LP has a killer sleeve
Avatar 11:17am Joe McG:

@mrmucho: Love it! In fact, this is one of the records so far that I want to check out more. Sounds good!
  11:19am Dean:

@Joe stalvey: I share your sentiment, and I complained mightily about the prospect when Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine dropped from the schedule. However, none other than our present DJ, Mr. McGasko, has assured me that despite appearances the per-show take is not a factor considered in programming. I was relieved to learn as much.
Avatar 11:20am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. A John Stewart song.
  11:20am Brendan:

Liona Boyd (Canadian) did a beautiful hodgepodge piece with three other Canadians guitarists Ed Bickert (jazz) Rik Emmett and Alex LIfeson called Beyond Borders in the 80's. Being before the Internet as we know it. it was one of the flimsy plastic records as an insert in Guitar Player magazine (sort of like the 45 records that were incorporated into cereal boxes that you cut out... ). Anyway here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luazBVOYa9c ... there not enough Liona on it for my liking, but ...
  11:20am Joe stalvey:

I know. I am saying it should be the sole option. But whatever it takes to motivate donations; I would hate to see the station go dark. Pandora, iTunes and all the rest do not hold a candle to FMU. My opinion.
  11:21am Evan:

Re: Billy Hancock,
His band was one of the rockabilly acts that played in the Washington DC metro area back in the late 70s and early 80s. He wasn't young at the time, so could have been around since the original rockabilly era. Switchblade was another such act in the DC area at the time. It was surprising to me that Billy Hancock was someone the DJ wasn't familiar with. But I guess that reflects both a regional and age bias on my part.
Avatar 11:21am Brian in UK:

Joe, I hope you are making up some of these band names.
  11:21am Listener Alexandra:

Did my part to nudge you along, Joe...thanks for another spectacular show :-)
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

Thanks for all the cool info, folks! And thank you, Alex! @Brian: I wish I were! That's a whole different show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Ken From Hyde Park:

Today, the WFMU community celebrates listener Cooh John, resident of Columbus, Ohio. Yay!
  11:25am herb.nyc:

I'll out myself- I've not pledged yet. But will. And for past few years, I add extra 1%. I hope others will too (or do > 1%). Maybe I'll pledge to Prof Dum Dum, I miss that loudmouth.
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

Thanks everyone who pledges to the station for any reason! We need you to survive, and we sure do appreciate that you allow us to do this.
  11:28am JakeGould:

Liking this set.

is being a jive ass better or worse than being a jive turkey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am JP from KC:

I would consider it... comparable.
Avatar 11:45am PKNY:
