What I don't understand is how that movie got greenlit, and even weirder, it didn't bomb. WHY DIDN'T IT BOMB? *Who* went to see this?!? And apparently it's not an origin story. It's like a fake sequel to a nonexistent movie or something.
  Wed. 7/6/16 9:29am Cecile:

@Cecile-I have a Weber grill with no cool zone...I MAKE half the coals stay on one side, and the other side empty...and grill my Italian sausage on the empty side...maybe that is what you actually meant and I mis-read? I do not brown, but I think that is personal preference (griller's choice)...it ended up browning anyway, but I lost context and am jumpin in on your post....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 7/6/16 9:33am ((Murakami Whywolf):

I thought the movie did bomb...the commercials make it look awkward, like they know the concept is incredibly colonialist and usually very racist, but if they're _really_ careful.... Alexander Skarsgård on Colbert's show was fairly funny describing his physical training regimen for it.

George Carlin got it right:
"I could never understand ethnic or national pride. Because to me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish isn't a skill, it’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn't say “I’m proud to be 5’11”. I’m proud to have a predisposition for colon cancer.” So why the fuck would you be proud to be Irish, or proud to be Italian, or American or anything?"

i'm proud of the ideals that America is based on. sure there's been a lot of abuse, exploitation, and ignorant mouthing about them. but we can always return to those values and say "we're not good enough. not yet." and that is what is great about America i think.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:07am bobdoesthings:

Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:09am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@WildNeil Would it make sense for you to be proud of another country's constitution, though (if it was a really good one)? If you said that, it would just sound weird. I mean, it's not like you (or anyone else alive who's into it) actually *wrote* the US Constitution, so why the pride?

the Canterbury wood-elf:

Carlin makes sense, but humans don't—at least if you don't reckon with our living with and by small tribes of relatives for most of our history, and identifying with those groups very strongly. Modern people, who often enjoy the illusion that we're independent, are less prone to it...which I prefer, but I know that this is unusual in historic terms.

i 100% agree with wood elf (& George Carlin). if there is anything the founders had to be proud of, the people of today sure's hell don't deserve a piece of that pride. they did nothing to deserve to feel pride.

Murakami - feeling emotions for something outside oneself is a good thing for a human. But when this precious vulnerability is preyed on by church, state, whatever, it's an awful thing to see.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:20am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@WildNeil It's not about the value of the US Constitution in relation to any others, it's about the idea of people feeling "pride" in things they had no part in creating.

If you heard someone from Iceland say they were proud of the US Constitution, or an American with no Danish background say they were proud of Denmark's constitution (or Iggy Pop saying he was proud of "Astral Weeks"), wouldn't that strike you as a bit odd?

Which is weird because I was enthralled by him for years.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:41am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Neil Yeh, i suppose that's a good summary of Carlin's premise that i was adopting. And i kind of get that people can feel proud of their friends' and family members' achievements, so what you're expressing is a kind of extrapolation of that to a nation-sized family.

But personally i think all forms of pride are probably better dropped. Even without buying into the underlying theology, i can see why it sits alongside sloth and gluttony as one of the "seven deadly sins". Just another obstacle to clarity.
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:42am tooplin:

@Marcel: Modern feminism has stripped men of 60% of the denim they once had.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 7/6/16 10:42am sphere:

btw, it is a very good show, Jonathan. i like your style. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:42am Marcel M:

@Tooplin: I for one am nostalgic for the 2nd wave.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:43am Furchick:

probably spearheaded by companies maximizing profit margins with less fabric
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:43am bobdoesthings:

I want dem shorts that go to your armpits and fall high mid thigh
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:43am Jherweg:

Mom shorts....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 7/6/16 10:43am sphere:

how can we forget the denim coveralls a la "Come on Eileen"?
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:44am Cecile:

I miss the old NBA hot pants uniforms. Sorry for the objectification.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:44am Wild Neil:

Hey, I asked the Mellotron question...and it went unanswered....I tried to engage then got interested in Politics.
@Canturbury-you raise an interesting point about pride! And as a nationalist, its not so much about PRIDE its about protecting a way of life...just like Poles in Poland want to preserve their relatively monolithic culture....coveralls are good for projects around the house in that they protect my chest from splinters and random impacts with stuff...they are like a layer of armor for me...
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:44am Furchick:

"Cool for cats" by UK Squeeze might have started the short shorts trend
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:45am Furchick:

talking about music and shorts
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:45am tooplin:

Talk about a filter sweep!
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:46am bobdoesthings:

ya'll think that wearing sandals is like wearing shorts for your feet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:47am coelacanth:

Furchick, i'm sure that's why levis suck now. even the "traditional" styles "505","501" "550"? are "low rise" comparatively. - even though they're supposedly the same style they always were. it's greed and it's bullshit.
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:47am Cecile:

I sure as hell don't. But I do need. A pedicure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:47am Mike East:

my job requires me to wear shorts and sandals cuz they won't turn the goddamn air on. Good morning all.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:47am Furchick:

In Australia we have many men wearing short shorts with thongs (flip flops) and wifebeaters with ACDC printed on. Thats a good look. with a mullet.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:48am Furchick:

coel, that's the cut off mullet head shorts
Avatar 🎃 Wed. 7/6/16 10:48am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:48am JP from KC:

Which reminds me, Angus Young is the only exception to the short-shorts on men rule. He's earned it.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:49am Furchick:

Ugh... ACDC from my town.... bogans yobbos dickheads.....
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:50am Cecile:

Furchick, ha! That's what dudes were wearing down there in the mid 70s when I lived there.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:50am Furchick:

good night fellas
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:50am coelacanth:

i went out with someone who would always smile and say she likes it when we saw some guys with mullets. i would not have done it but i asked her "do want me to make it a mullet?" she said "NOT ON YOU!"
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:50am Furchick:

they still do Cecile
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:52am Cecile:

I'm not a fella, but good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:52am Marcel M:

Great show, Jonathan. Enjoying. (while sweating in my jeans).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:53am coelacanth:

actually shorts above the knee were the only shorts (at least in the us) until...the 80?
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:53am Cecile:

I like their music, but wouldn't want to meet them.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:53am Jherweg:

thanks, not a lot of songs with words.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:54am Marcel M:

I remember when I was in middle school everyone wore the ones that came to the ankles and wore them bellow the butt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:55am coelacanth:

...and i don't wear sandals, except on my own front porch. just not practical; but i have no fashion-based bigotry about it in public.
  Wed. 7/6/16 10:55am Cecile:

I think It started with Michael Jordan wanting Bulls trunks that fit over his lucky UNC trunks. True story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:56am coelacanth:

by the way Marcel, i guess i saw you perform at snugs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:56am Marcel M:

@Coel: Woah, really? Cool! That was a fun show! You live up there?
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 10:57am bobdoesthings:

<3 snugs harbor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 10:59am coelacanth:

i kept saying i knew "rivercult" from somewhere; then remembered and told a friend "oh, yeah, i bought the ep on bandcamp"....i still didn't remember that it was YOUR band! 'SORRY! i would've said hi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:00am coelacanth:

...yeah, i live here. i'm friends with it's not night it's space; and that's my main hang out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:00am Marcel M:

All good! I used to play up there with INNIS all the time with my last band and will be up with RC a lot more. I'm good friends with those guys. We will be at Snug's again Aug 19 and The Anchor in Kingston on Aug 20.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:00am Marcel M:

Def. say whats up next time
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:00am Wild Neil:

I think sandals are more practical than flip flops...flip flops are beach only and maybe backyard or dash to the car across hot blacktop for me....sandals rule my summer...
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:01am tooplin:

@all: ToeShoes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:03am coelacanth:

i absolutely will Marcel. i got fairly drunk really fast - otherwise it might've dawned on me.
what was your old band name? there's a very good chance i saw you then too!
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:03am Wild Neil:

I am ANTI toe shoes for sure, but toesocks are cute on women...but not dudes....
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:03am bobdoesthings:

foot gloves?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:08am Marcel M:

@Coel: Haha
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:09am tooplin:

How do you think the group is dressed during this recording?
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:09am Cecile:

GBV are touring again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:09am Marcel M:

@tooplin: Oh shit, bringing it totally full circle.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:10am Jherweg:

Apparently the original recording of this was pressed on a lathe in a south american cocaine factory,,,,,how fucking high were these dudes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:11am coelacanth:

(by the way you guys were Awesome)
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:12am bobdoesthings:

@tooplin - moondresses with foot gloves and little toe shoes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:12am Marcel M:

Thanks Coel! We have a live set airing on Chris M's show tomorrow :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:12am Marcel M:

They must have been mixing the coke with some downers though. Shit is tripped out.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:13am Wild Neil:

This Portuguese (Brazilian??) music is like free Jazz...pretty cool....echos of King Crimson jams in there.....
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:14am tooplin:

@bob: footglove/moonshoes - business on the top, Party on the back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:15am Mike East:

As I type, I'm actually working on the backline order for the seaport show this weekend. GBV is bringing their own, though. Another gig I'd like to be the tech on, but alas, I get stuck in the office.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:15am bobdoesthings:

@tooplin - tri cornered hat? or ..no?
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:16am Cecile:

Marcel, AWESOME!
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:16am Wild Neil:

@Mike East-what is GBV?
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:17am tooplin:

@Bob: funnily enough I'm having trouble finding ANY pictures of Tom Ellard with a hat on!
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:17am Wild Neil:

OH Guided by Voices...never mind!
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:19am Cecile:

Ok, so that "last show" was a lie? Ugh.
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:20am Cecile:

Maybe you can be the beer coordinator, Mike?
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:21am Nate K:

You again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:22am Mike East:

@Cecile - I feel like that job wouldn't be as fun as it sounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:22am Mike East:

I see a lot of these bands' hospitality riders and I think about the people that are in charge of taking care of that shit...makes me glad I'm not them.
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:22am Cecile:

Yeah, you'd be way too busy!
  Wed. 7/6/16 11:27am Cecile:

This is sweeet
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:28am Marcel M:

  Wed. 7/6/16 11:34am rakes:

Oh no, love this show but only tuned in during last song. Encore?
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:37am Wild Neil:

@Jonathan-I enjoyed the show immensely! You did not insult me nor tell me to shut up even ONCE due to my divergent political views... Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:37am Rich in Washington:

the same thing happened to me when I was temporarily show-less; I ended up logging more hours as a sub for other people.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:39am Jherweg:

Yeah it's the freedom to do free form radio when you want total freedom!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:39am Mike East:

Really cool show, Jonathan.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:41am Wild Neil:

@Jhwerweg"Yeah it's the freedom to do free form radio when you want total freedom!! " Yeah, words to live by. Even though you probably disagreed with me you did not lash out. Thanks!

George-Edwards are a Tony Coulter fave!
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:47am Wild Neil:

@ALL-how many of you all are in bands? I wonder if its more than 50%? By the way this George Edwards Group is WILD! and so is this NEXT song...
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:49am bobdoesthings:

I haven't been in a band since I was in high school .. oddly enough it was with listener Marcel. He's stayed rocking it.. I barely play anymore even as a hobby..
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:50am Wild Neil:

@Jonathan-a REALLY good eclectic show. Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/6/16 11:52am steve:

ha that's a great survey to take Wild Neil... i occasionally do solo stuff but never once been in a band.

Haven't been in a band for years...I'm waiting for one of my kids to take an interest in drums so we can start a family band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 7/6/16 11:53am melinda:

My listening has been spotty but I liked what i heard today Jonathan, thanks! Also, yes to shorts, comfort first. Except for hotpants
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:54am Wild Neil:

@Steve-just like some bands are bands that mostly musicians like (I like some of those) I hypothesize that many people in bands listen to FMU for inspiration and food for the brain. I think hotpants on women can be awesome....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 7/6/16 11:57am melinda:

@Neil: I assume I'm probably outnumbered on the hotpants issue. The term is now dated but I like it for that reason.
Avatar Wed. 7/6/16 11:58am Wild Neil:

I think James Brown liked 'em...he wrote a song about them...they must hurt to wear and cause undue attention in certain environments to be sure!
