Uncle M, why did your friend turn it down?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Daniel Blumin:

sinister! great to see ye! Hola, Rev!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Uncle Michael:

He's the singer on "The Theme to Garry Shanling's Show," and he was asked to come and reprise it on Fallon's show. Long trip...short notice...really nothing to promote, so he balked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

I tend to have fantasies about living in LA every spring but I think in reality the lack of seasonal change would drive me nuts. I hated that about Texas growing up there.
Avatar 10:22pm coelacanth:

that's understandable then... but, yeah, must be nice!

Avatar 10:26pm coelacanth:

i'd definitely miss the variety. my plan that got foiled was based mainly on the idea that i wanted no permanent dwelling.
Avatar 10:27pm coelacanth:

hey Jack
Avatar 10:29pm geezerette:

We had seasons, they were subtle but seasons all the same. Now we just have various degrees of summer. And almost no rain.
Great sunlight though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Jack Mello:

hey coelacanth, what up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm fleep:

coela, no permanent dwelling? What's the alternative? An RV? Tent in the forest? Suite at the Beverly Wilshire?
Avatar 10:34pm coelacanth:

Avatar 10:35pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm fleep:

Don't hit the reef!
  10:46pm P-90:

@UM: wasn't "The Theme to Garry Sandling's Show" vocal supposed to be reminiscent of John Sebastian? I.e, the typical kind of singer who writes and performs a sitcom title theme, in keeping with the "generic sitcom" idea of that show? It's been years since I heard it, but that's what I seem to remember...
I understand why he declined the Tonight Show, but I confess I would have tuned in to hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Īke:

@coel@10:34, an acquaintance in or near the Hudson Valley just commented on Farcebook, "Imagine my delight when... the ostensible gunfire... was not the crackhouse down the block having a shootout, but in fact a lovely fireworks display over the Hudson...." Ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm fleep:

Halloooooooooo, Carm!!!
  10:55pm P-90:

Yo Carm
  10:57pm Carmichael:

Hey P. Is the show almost over?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Uncle Michael:

P-90, I can sort of hear what you're saying about Sebastian, Bill never characterized it like that...I have no idea what direction he was given. He's a pretty terrific guitar player and singer. He says someone connected with the show was at a gig of his in '86 and asked him if he'd like to come down and give it a go. He says he rn through it once just to get a mic level and they told that was just what they wanted and he never sang another take. They used the mic check...it wasn't even a take. They had him on for the final episode and he sang it on-set and on-camera. It was only the second time he'd sung it.

I always figured I was the only person who remembered the Gary Shandling Show.
  11:03pm GM || DC:

Friday night check-in.
Avatar 11:03pm coelacanth:

Ike that reminds me... a few months (in the summer) after i moved to where i live (not where i AM) i started hearing "gun shots" at slightly irregular intervals, sometimes for hours at a time. 'sounded like shotguns. i know there are lots of yahoos in my area- i'm friends with some! - but it was pissing me off so i decided to take my bicycle and follow the sound.
it turned out to be a water cannon a nearby farm was using to both water the corn and scare the geese off.
...that was good news!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Uncle Michael:

Andrew, hard to forget when a friend sang the theme. He also told me that it's not him whistling on the "part where I start to whistle." That was the trombone player.
Avatar 11:07pm JakeGould:

@Īke: Back in the early 2000s when I lived in a part of Brooklyn that was not gentrified yet it was fun on a summer night to try to figure out what was a gunshot and what was a firework.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Andrew Waterloo:

There's a guy in my area with a hail cannon. I haven't heard it in awhile.
  11:08pm Carmichael:

I remember the Turtles version: "we're almost to the part where we go 'a ba ba ba ba'"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Uncle Michael. It's all memory for me. I haven't seen it since it was on and I was quite young at the time.
  11:10pm Maria D:

Bruce Lacey is serving me well
  11:10pm P-90:

Fascinating to learn about the "Garry" theme song. And a shock that Garry's gone, even though he turned up in an Iron Man movie (and a Capt. America or Avengers movie?) recently, and looked none too healthy.
  11:12pm Carmichael:

That 1st show was pre-reality. And he gave up the Carson gig to do Larry Sanders.
Avatar 11:13pm coelacanth:

i can picture Garry Shanling's face but i barley saw the show. i wasn't so into tv. that's impressive though, about them using the mic-check.

...and, a hail cannon? so he's a weather man?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Uncle Michael:

The 1st show owed a lot to shows like Burns & Allen where the character plays himself in show business...and more importantly, violating the 4th wall was an essential element.
  11:16pm P-90:

@fleep:: thanks for the link, that page has the original plus the Flo & Eddie version, way cool.
Avatar 11:16pm coelacanth:

rest in peace Mr. Shandling.
Avatar 11:18pm JakeGould:

Gary Shandling is just a great, under appreciated talent. I consider him and Larry David on the same level. Will be missed.
  11:18pm Carmichael:

Weren't the Turtles dating Gary's mom earlier in the hippie era? They were singing Elenore to her, about being topless at a concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Andrew Waterloo:

@coelcanth: farmer. hail cannons are believed to disrupt the atmospheric conditions that allow hail to form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Uncle Michael:

That Jalopnik article links to an interview with Bill where he fails to mention two things when discussing the Bonnie Raitt thing he mentions...first, my wife was at that gig. Second, he wound up dating Bonnie for a long spell at that point.
Avatar 11:22pm JakeGould:

Daniel, I dig this Marshall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, they were a couple. He also turned down Little Feat post-Lowell. He was recently sober and there was just way too much coke around.

I'm digging everything. this show is the perfect end to a Friday.
