A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The calm, dry air and cold temps are setting us up for some good ice skating on the ponds here. At least until it warms up or snows/rains again.

  10:13am Ted:

Personally, i like to drink a little more in the winter.
Avatar 10:14am northguineahills:

I grew up in Florida, and my wife grew up in Mexico. I'm just as likely to make soup from scratch when it's 100F/38C as I would when it's 15F/-9C. I still eat cold desserts in the winter, and my noodle choices I cook don't change (I have some matcha soba in the fridge. Now that I live in the northlands, I suppose my clothes change w/ the seasons. (I pretty much eat mostly noodles and soup when not making Mexican cuisine all year).
Avatar 10:15am geegee vindaloo:

BTW, I had a strange dream last night that Irwin Chusid was broadcasting and living next door to me. I only found that out because he described the 7-11 on the corner over the air. Plus on the door of his building was a sign that read "Irwin". What does it all mean??
Avatar 10:16am kwhitehead:

I watch "Fargo" and then I don't feel so bad.
  10:17am Jack D:

Hi Trouble! We may not have winter in Los Angeles but your show is providing a nice soundtrack to a rare rainy January morning! Hugs from the coast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Ike:

Oh wow @geegee, I once had really great cold Korean noodles at a restaurant in Palisades Park NJ on a 100°F day (38°C). Now any time it gets blazing hot in the summer, I want those noodles.
Avatar 10:21am Trouble:

Northguineahills: i got a tortilla press for christmas. do you have any tips?
Avatar 10:22am Trouble:

@ geegeevindaloo: run for the hills!
Avatar 10:25am Trouble:

@ jack: merci! hope i didn't sound like i am dissing LA. I am actually madly jealous that you get to live with all that greenery and outdoor life.
Avatar 10:27am βrian:

Dimes to dollars, the person who gave the tortilla press received it as a gift.
Avatar 10:28am northguineahills:

@Trouble: I'm so jealous! My wife was trying to get her mom to send one up, but it seemed like more trouble then it was worth. mrs ngh comes back tonight, so I'll see if we get one. We do have a cast iron tortilla comal (for heating tortillas), which is already heavy as all outdoors.
Avatar 10:29am danjoseph:

Nice, bonus Beach Bullies!
Avatar 10:31am Trouble:

@asheville jon…yes, secret handshakes here we come. I am NJ transplant and have a treasured cache of Trouble air check cassettes from the early 1990's…my wife and I would traverse Vermont and NH bringing that Trouble energy with us on many a trip. The cassettes are still packed up in the many unpacked boxes we still have in our shed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Asheville Jon:

Nice riley!
i think we should meet at whole foods or earth fare, fill up shopping carts with all kinds of good stuff, then try to pay using our WFMU membership cards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Priscilla:

Window boxes are a big seasonal thing! I still need to drag mine inside.
Avatar 10:46am riley:

@trouble…we have all seasons here in Asheville. In fact there is a "Four Seasons Blvd" in nearby Hendersonville!
  10:47am Polyus:

Really, clothing is the only thing that changes with the seasons for me. And more cold drinks in the summer, maybe? I am kinda dull.
  10:48am P-90:

Wait, is there a new Henri the Cat video on YouTube? And yes, Mozart in the Jungle is worth checking out, for anyone who hasn't yet.

@trouble in Chapel Hill our winter is shorter than up north. We REALLY take advantage of the sunny warm days and I like to make and eat lots of stews and tend to bake more in the winter too. Not very resolution-friendly. *sigh*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am doctorjazz:

Did I miss something, Downton Abbey seems to be bigger than the bible all of a sudden...

"Télévision, c'est l'ennui."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Ike:

To be pedantic, a "reboot" is a restart, not a new season. And it's generally with new actors and usually a new take on the material. But this term is often misused.
Avatar 10:57am pseydtonne:

I have a lot of thoughts about the seasonality topic. I've lived in a few different climates, including growing up in upstate NY and living in Los Angeles for four years.
Avatar 10:58am Utopiast:

@Brian TV=boredom Agreed. Often TV can be like a drug - a substitute for something better to do.
Avatar 11:02am pseydtonne:

You definitely miss seasons when you move to Los Angeles. At first it's great that you can sleep in any Saturday because there is no winter prep. Then you realize two years have passed and you don't feel them. Also, winter makes people bond in the face of attacks from weather -- it builds communities.
Avatar 11:08am Trouble:

good point @pseydtonne

@psey: my son has lived in LA for a few years now and is ecstatic when they actually get rain, or clouds.. he misses his NYState of mind
  11:14am Adrian in London:

Right cricket over for the day. First time a black South African has scored a test century. As to TV, has The Bridge made it to the US? It's a Swedish/Danish cop show (but much much more than that), and the lead actress, Sofia Helin, is astonishingly good. Since series 3 ended I can;t really watch much else. But I did like The Knick a lot.
  11:14am Dean:

Took me 40 years to figure out LA. I'm slow. But once I figured it out, it was a party. Then I moved north. Figures.
Avatar 11:18am pseydtonne:

Now that I live in Tulsa, I have some version of winter again. It feels good, just because it's not the same. Then again, I don't have to shovel (unlike my childhood or my life in Boston for a dozen years).

  11:19am Ike:

@Adrian, nope, except illicitly via streaming -- but there was a crappy American remake, of course. Set in TX on the Mexican border. Some great actors and a good premise were wasted in it. They made the killer too omniscient.
  11:20am Paul Weil:

Avatar 11:20am βrian:

@Adrian: I think that's only available via streaming, so ... not really. I've heard good things.
  11:20am Mark R:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Webhamster Henry:

@luthorVonDoom I may have some of them, serialized in the soft-porn-y L'Echo des Savanes, which serialized a lot of BDs.
  11:50am P-90:

"Valérian: Spatio-Temporal Agent" has been an influential, much-loved work of science fiction since 1967 or so (the "Barbarella" era), that has enjoyed huge popularity in Europe, while remaining unaccountably almost unknown to the general American audience. But fans have always known it as a big influence on Star Wars, in story, visual style and "feel". The final design of the Millenium Falcon was a last-minute decision and has always looked like it was inspired by Valerian's ship, the XB982. Now there's buzz about all this in the media because director Luc Besson is shooting his dream project, a big-budget adaptation of the Valerian et Laureline epic "Empire of a Thousand Planets", whose title alone suggests a Star Wars rip-off, but which preceded Star Wars itself. -End of geek-out.
  11:55am Dean:

This Sun Ra reminds me of Pandelis Karayorgis, who also works on occasion with fuzzed-up Fender Rhodes, e.g., here: http://karayorgis.com/Pages/CDPages/Betwixt.html Haven't checked his discography in ages. Much to seek out.
