A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  10:14am sugarwolf:

It feels like cancer has been affecting so many people lately, in the public eye and also my personal sphere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...think it's the psychological thing that Bowie was such an Image - & always transforming - that represents immortality & resurrection on the symbolic level. I loved Bowie but I'm still surprised how sad I am & how long I'm sad
...Art Rock is a slow burn too - easy to take for granted...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Trouble and all…
Avatar 10:17am dcp:

Different point of view: I'm not a big Bowie fan--I like some of his tunes but don't love them. But I'm feeling the loss too. The guy was big and you can feel his presence all over. Hard not to be affected by his exit.
Avatar 10:18am bobdoesthings:

@trouble - ahhh very cool. I fenced foil myself. I always thought of epee as the more purists choice though, very cool. good luck to him with it
Avatar 10:19am Marcel M:

@BOB: You used to fence?! Do you have any photos of that?!
  10:19am JakeGould:

@dcp: Pretty much my feeling as well; I like Bowie but just not the biggest fan. But that said, his death happened a few days after a new album is released and a his own birthday? This is a guy who calculated his whole career and life and now even death? Too surreal.
Avatar 10:20am bobdoesthings:

@marcel- yeahh dude.. for like 4 years or so.. Im sure there are photos. haha.. Still have most my equipment and whatnot at my folks' house.
Avatar 10:20am Marcel M:

Yeah the whole thing is novelesque.. he was a true poet.
Avatar 10:20am dcp:

Exactly @Jake, you gotta hand it to him, quite a masterful departure.
Avatar 10:20am Marcel M:

@Bob: I need to see that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

His final Bowie-ism. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Mike East:

just got c'est chic (the first volume) a couple months back on coloured vinyl. I'm tryin to keep up.
Avatar 10:21am glenn:

i've done some fencing. a good shovel is de rigueur.
  10:21am JakeGould:

@RevolutionRabbitNov63: Dude, you know about star charts and such. Anything you can glean from the timing of this all?
Avatar 10:22am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - hah alright i'll see what i can do.
Avatar 10:22am dcp:

Actually though, I think his lyrics were kind of lame and lazy a lot of the time. I was reading through some of them for Dark Star and not too impressed.
  10:23am JakeGould:

@dcp: Awww. Give me a break. 95% of lyrics out there are garbage. Ever pay attention to Led Zeppelin or even King Crimson? Garbage lyrics. Great music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@JakeG: Haven't looked into that yet - but Pluto planet of death & transformation is going thru Capricorn (Blackstar indeed).
  10:24am Peter:

ok, quick dash to school where I'll pick this up and force the middle schoolers to listen!
  10:24am JakeGould:

@RevolutionRabbitNov63: Well, that’s good enough for me! Thank you!
Avatar 10:25am Marcel M:

I meant "poet" in a higher sense, not literally poems. And novelesque referring to his life as a whole and how it just seems unreal now. If you were responding to me with your lyrics line. But I couldn't disagree more... especially about basing it on his 25th album only.
Avatar 10:25am dcp:

@Jake: that's the point. Bowie's suppose to be different. Early Beatles too were pathetic. Maybe my standard is too high for pop lyrics though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we don't all die @ a Pluto transit, but we encounter the Underworld in one way or another...Let a pro Astrologer speak to Bowie's specifics...
Avatar 10:26am dcp:

Not just Dark Star but it's not a point I'm feeling overly argumentative about...so I'll just let it go.
  10:27am JakeGould:

@dcp: I don’t know. In general I think there are two types of music fans: Those who actually care about lyrics, and others who just see lyrics as words that just shape sounds as a part of a song. I’m a part of the later. Sometimes I discover lyrics and wince, but in general if the music is good I will listen to gibberish.
Avatar 10:27am glenn:

Avatar 10:27am glenn:

or at least, the shangri-las are my fave girl group. neko case and the sadies kill this one also.
Avatar 10:28am dcp:

Yeah, I'm firmly a member of the first group. But I spend a LOT of time on my lyrics so...
  10:29am JakeGould:

@dcp: Just assure me you don’t overanalyze Bob Dylan lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Tome:

car phone now ,, ahh Diggin' the Trouble !
Avatar 10:29am Marcel M:

@Jake: Haha.. I hate when people do that as well!
Avatar 10:30am dcp:

Rock and/or roll is so great because the lyrics allow for a whole extra level of communication that isn't there in a lot of kinds of music. So to just fill it up with fluff is a waste to me--I'm not talking about Bowie at all now. just generally.
Avatar 10:30am dcp:

On the contrary, I just want them to be creative and thoughtful. I don't need James Joyce or anything.
  10:30am JakeGould:

@dcp: So when Little Richard sings, “Good golly, Miss Molly.” you really want there to be a gravitas to that declaration.
Avatar 10:31am Marcel M:

Jame's Joyce's writing was just as wacked out as Dylan's ;-)
Avatar 10:31am dcp:

Ha, Little Richard had AMAZING lyrics. Great example.
Avatar 10:33am glenn:

hmm. i've read ulysses and tarantula. i'd say dylan wins the "what the fuck" award.
  10:33am JakeGould:

@dcp: Okay… I think I understand you now. You want NO gravitas to the lyrics, but the lyrics should reflect some impulsive enthusiasm only pop music can generate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Myself - always knocked on my butt by Bowie's ability to write virtual short stories in popsong form - w/ an overview for Theme & sense of theatrics & visual design all included syncretically.
Whether an awful lot of Pop/Rawk lyrics stand on their own on the page as 'Poetry' in the most clinical sense - & how one defines 'Poetry' - what is Poetry...you'll never get to the bottom of that, but can have fun trying...Things you sing you are particularly thinking of the phonemes & the sounds...Blues have fantastic Poetry (Robert Johnson) - his Imagery...
Avatar 10:36am dcp:

@glenn: you're right there. @Jake: I'm a firm believer in the punk rock method--just do whatever you want but MAKE IT GOOD.

@RRN63: Oh yeah, Come On In My Kitchen is brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Andrew Waterloo:

I tend to ignore lyrics but absolutely love lyrics when they work well and I love a good word smith. But, I tend be less enthusiastic about lyrics that try to be overly profound by mixing fancy sounding lines with no actual story.
Avatar 10:38am Howard F:

Hi Trouble! Thanks again for the great tunes. Are the Shop Assistants the original version of Train from Kansas City? The first version I heard was Superchunk.
Avatar 10:40am glenn:

it's a shangri-las song.

Oh! You Pretty Things has always been a favorite. Listened to it a few times in the past couple of days. Man, the lyrics our just, wow.

Avatar 10:48am dcp:

Wow DIG THESE LYRICS!
Avatar 10:49am dcp:

Totally loved that tune without understanding anything sung.
Avatar 10:50am northguineahills:

I have no idea what the lyrics are to over 99% of the music I listen to. I literally have to listen to a song nearly a hundred times before I realize what some of the words are. I don't hear words, just sounds.... Then again, I don't enunciate my own speech very clearly (according to friends..)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm pretty verbal, & I'm very musical - but they aren't very integrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Alas.
Avatar 10:55am dcp:

I'm unverbal. I don't believe in talking. But if you're going to do it, do it right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm generally like that dcp, but there are times when I discover the lyrics and love a song even more. David Bowie's Heroes is a good example of that. Especially the way he performs it later on his career.
  10:58am JakeGould:

I like to order food via pantomime and rebus puzzles. Emoji gives my way of being a new life.
Avatar 10:59am dcp:

I think Strummer once talked about the different level of complexity added to reggae tunes because you had no idea what they were talking about at first. So slowly the song would grow and change as you figured out what the hell they were singing. I love that. I'm going to be singing Misery by the Beatles at a party soon. Talk about dumb lyrics. But the song is fantastic still. So I guess I just contradicted the hell out of myself. Oh well. I'm a large man, I contain multitudes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Misery' is a drunk getting maudlin. Listen how they sing it. TheBeatles did Simple right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Mark the Sardine:

@northguineahills, same here. I can hum every note in a guitar solo for songs I first heard 20 years ago... but can't remember a single complete verse of lyrics.
Avatar 11:02am dcp:

[It's also one of the only Beatles songs that's actually easy to play on guitar]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Grok-o-matic:

I was just talking about this gravedigger track last night. Surprising a lot of big Bowie fans don't know that first album.
  11:04am mmorovati:

Gravedigger song! wonderful. Thank you! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Barney Grubbs:

I first heard Mr Gravedigger on a Dr. Demento halloween special in my distant youth. It was my first clue that Bowie was more than just Let's Dance, etc.
  11:05am Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

My mentor was Bob Blackburn at the Printmaking Workshop 1986-1990. RIP. An amazing artist, printmaker, person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Priscilla:

Peter I made lithos there too, for years! We probably overlapped.

I guess my mentor was BC who took me under his wing when I was 15. We started a group and played all over central PA. He introduced me to punk rock. Which changed my life of course.
  11:18am Polyus:

Don Metcalf, my Jr. HS band director, who encouraged me to play the drums and then eventually hired me to play in his wedding band.
  11:18am kevlicki:

Morning Trouble and all.
My mentors are many of the collaborators I've had over the years, most notable, my pal Josh MacPhee. He's an incredibly prolific graphic designer, visual artist, organizer and anarchist. And ive had the fortune of working with him for about 10 years now!

Just got here. Like the playlist image.
Avatar 11:22am glenn:

a mentor? nobody would have had the patience to mentor me as a young'un, given i was such a blatantly useless article.

la wally last week, lachme this week. are you experiencing a diva phase, trouble?
Avatar 11:24am βrian:

(That Délibes piece always reminds me of _I've Heard the Mermaids Singing_)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am listener james from westwood:

My professional mentor was my first boss in publishing. Taught me how to be a production editor, to copyedit, and to proofread. No small amount of business writing tutoring, too, and how to train folks when I was given a bump to senior editor. Also introduced me to WFMU on my first day of work! If you hear a shout-out to Listener Chris from Bloomfield during the marathon, that's him. I owe him a ton!
Avatar 11:30am Trouble:

@glenn- i am always in a diva phase! i played that bit for " the hunger" reference...
