A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Different point of view: I'm not a big Bowie fan--I like some of his tunes but don't love them. But I'm feeling the loss too. The guy was big and you can feel his presence all over. Hard not to be affected by his exit.

@BOB: You used to fence?! Do you have any photos of that?!
  10:19am
JakeGould:

@dcp: Pretty much my feeling as well; I like Bowie but just not the biggest fan. But that said, his death happened a few days after a new album is released and a his own birthday? This is a guy who calculated his whole career and life and now even death? Too surreal.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am
Marcel M:

I meant "poet" in a higher sense, not literally poems. And novelesque referring to his life as a whole and how it just seems unreal now. If you were responding to me with your lyrics line. But I couldn't disagree more... especially about basing it on his 25th album only.
Avatar 10:25am
dcp:

@Jake: that's the point. Bowie's suppose to be different. Early Beatles too were pathetic. Maybe my standard is too high for pop lyrics though.

@dcp: I don’t know. In general I think there are two types of music fans: Those who actually care about lyrics, and others who just see lyrics as words that just shape sounds as a part of a song. Rock and/or roll is so great because the lyrics allow for a whole extra level of communication that isn't there in a lot of kinds of music. So to just fill it up with fluff is a waste to me--I'm not talking about Bowie at all now. just generally.
Avatar 10:30am
dcp:

On the contrary, I just want them to be creative and thoughtful. I don't need James Joyce or anything.
  10:30am
JakeGould:

@dcp: So when Little Richard sings, “Good golly, Miss Molly.” you really want there to be a gravitas to that declaration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am

Jame's Joyce's writing was just as wacked out as Dylan's ;-)

  10:33am
JakeGould:

@dcp: Okay… I think I understand you now. You want NO gravitas to the lyrics, but the lyrics should reflect some impulsive enthusiasm only pop music can generate.
Avatar 10:34am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Myself - always knocked on my butt by Bowie's ability to write virtual short stories in popsong form - w/ an overview for Theme & sense of theatrics & visual design all included syncretically.
Whether an awful lot of Pop/Rawk lyrics stand on their own on the page as 'Poetry' in the most clinical sense - & how one defines 'Poetry' - what is Poetry...you'll never get to the bottom of that, but can have fun trying...Things you sing you are particularly thinking of the phonemes & the sounds...Blues have fantastic Poetry (Robert Johnson) - his Imagery...

I think Strummer once talked about the different level of complexity added to reggae tunes because you had no idea what they were talking about at first. So slowly the song would grow and change as you figured out what the hell they were singing. I love that. I'm going to be singing Misery by the Beatles at a party soon. Talk about dumb lyrics. But the song is fantastic still. So I guess I just contradicted the hell out of myself. Oh well. I'm a large man, I contain multitudes.

I was just talking about this gravedigger track last night. Surprising a lot of big Bowie fans don't know that first album.

I first heard Mr Gravedigger on a Dr. Demento halloween special in my distant youth. It was my first clue that Bowie was more than just Let's Dance, etc.

My mentor was Bob Blackburn at the Printmaking Workshop 1986-1990. RIP. An amazing artist, printmaker, person.

I guess my mentor was BC who took me under his wing when I was 15. We started a group and played all over central PA. He introduced me to punk rock. Which changed my life of course.

Don Metcalf, my Jr. HS band director, who encouraged me to play the drums and then eventually hired me to play in his wedding band.

Morning Trouble and all.
My mentors are many of the collaborators I've had over the years, most notable, my pal Josh MacPhee. He's an incredibly prolific graphic designer, visual artist, organizer and anarchist. And ive had the fortune of working with him for about 10 years now!

listener james from westwood:

My professional mentor was my first boss in publishing. Taught me how to be a production editor, to copyedit, and to proofread. No small amount of business writing tutoring, too, and how to train folks when I was given a bump to senior editor. Also introduced me to WFMU on my first day of work! If you hear a shout-out to Listener Chris from Bloomfield during the marathon, that's him. I owe him a ton!
