Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/13/15 5:10am coelacanth:

yes and John Coltrane's main influence to step it up was Ornette Coleman, who's also from the u.s.

  Sun. 12/13/15 5:18am greysquad:

actually, a really big influence on Coltrane was John Gilmore, who was Sun Ra's main sax honcho during the sixties and seventies...
this is from wikipedia.
For the next four decades, Gilmore recorded and performed almost exclusively with Sun Ra. This was puzzling to some, who noted Gilmore's talent, and thought he could be a major star like John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins. Despite being five years older than Gilmore, Coltrane was impressed with his playing, and took informal lessons from Gilmore in the late 1950s. Coltrane's epochal, proto–free jazz "Chasin' the Trane" was inspired partly by Gilmore's sound.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/13/15 5:19am Stanley:

America is quite a country. Both brilliant and scary. I don't get the impression that education is well funded and consequently not very good for those who are not rich.

it's not good for the rich either. it's focused on passing tests.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/13/15 5:25am coelacanth:

greysquad, i have to learn more about Gilmore. i don't doubt what you say, but there's this from Trane: "Yeah, well, I feel indebted to him [Coleman], myself. Because actually, when he came along, I was so far in this thing [the "harmonic structures"], I didn't know where I was going to go next. And, I didn't know if I would have thought about just abandoning the chord system or not. I probably wouldn't have thought of that at all. And he came along doing it, and I heard it, I said, "Well, that - that must be the answer."

  Sun. 12/13/15 5:32am greysquad:

Interesting...It's true that ornette played at coltranes funeral, but he was totally into the new free jazz sounds before he died (sun ra, ayler) and was starting to explore that with with "interstellar space", and "ascension"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/13/15 5:39am coelacanth:

yes! that was Coleman's influence. Ayler got it from Coleman as well. Sun Ra must have been influence too by Coleman, but probably wouldn't admit it!

btw, Great show, Jonathan!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 12/13/15 5:44am coelacanth:

ascension, meditations, that phase... that's where i think he was truly brilliant; and that was directly influenced by Coleman's "new thing". (i don't know if Ornette called it that, but the press did.)
