A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Updating the Fahey-Kotke groove? Anyone who can keep me enthused about guitar by now (& I'm all into guitar) has my respect & appreciation. Lovin' the Bachman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Webhamster Henry:

Morning Trouble! Gonna get to some of the 6 hours of Francophonic records you didn't get to last week?

If there are any Dom Le Nena fans tuned in, she's touring Europe in the autumn, including a London date; she promised me on Twitter that she wouldn't cancel it this time.
  9:30am Sam:

"It's a sticky sticky sticky sticky Tuesday!" I love that song. Was that the Monkees?

David Fenech is a Lonnie Holley fan. He talked with Lonnie after his show in Paris last year. I don't think anything came out of that chat (musically) but I'm not putting that beyond him

Avatar 9:59am Roberto:

Mon dieu, there's a French version of this?
Avatar 10:01am Erella:

I am LOVING this french version of this Francis Bebey song. Amazing. I love his french. The earnestness is intact!
Avatar 10:02am Erella:

How will he translate the word Tall-ee?
  10:04am Mark:

Trouble, that word you invented earlier for how we all feel in this heat and humidity was perfect. You truly captured the vibe.
  10:07am Mark:

Rev Rabbit, re: your earlier comment about guitar players, Jeffrey Davison (Sat. a.m.) turned me on to a guy named Mark Fosson. I guess he's been around forever, but the first I heard of him was on "Shrunken Planet."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am ausmanx:

give in, pierre, give in
Avatar 10:09am bobdoesthings:

I don't read books, I'm not a nerd!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am jamesie:

A death in the family, my struggle by Karl Ove Knausgarten
  10:10am Matt:

I'm a nerd. The Art of Memory, by Frances Yates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Mark: Oh - it's a ridiculous thing to say really - there's always loads of great guitarists. Irene Trudel presents plenty also...
Avatar 10:10am kwhitehead:

Also, if you can get your hands on a galley copy, I highly recommend "City on Fire" by Garth Riske Hallberg. It's a debut novel about NYC in the '70's. 925 pages and quite a feat for a first novel. It comes out in October. Lots of great music references, among other things.
Avatar 10:11am pierre:

I can't, my studio (agency, office, whatever it's called…) is watching me…

I'm currently reading : the comic books serie "Love and Rocket" and the book "If He Hollers Let Him Go" by Chester Himes
Avatar 10:11am pierre:

both great stuff to read in the hot, steamy weather.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Greg from ZONE 5:

Currently re-reading 1984 (It's still really awesome)
Avatar 10:13am djsheilab:

I was just leaving WFMU and then heard this...ran back to my computer to check what it was. WOW! Same thing happened to me last week when Joe McGasko played Fifteen Years Old. What a brilliant new artist! I'm in love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am common:

good day.
Avatar 10:15am fred:

I'm rereading stuff these days. I'm taking another trip through Infinite Jest, with Sylvia Plath poems for a change of pace (I want to read The Bell Jar again too, but Colson Whitehead beckons)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- whipped thru 'On the Road' again & fear no other Lit will be quite like being in that car...
@Greg: Some make the point that Huxley, ok, was an Ideas man, but Orwell happened to Write really well...
Avatar 10:21am Trouble:

Avatar 10:21am northguineahills:

Wow, this singers & players is perfect! On-U never disappoints. Besides Sherwood, who else is involved, I'm not familiar w/ the group.
Avatar 10:22am pierre:

I also just finished reading : Sir Ernest Shackleton's "South: The Endurance Expedition", and I must tell you that it's a book that goes well with canicula. Another about this book, it's one of the most factual things I have ever read.
Avatar 10:23am Erella:

@Fred, That is so cool. This morning, I just pulled out The Bell Jar to reread.
Avatar 10:25am kwhitehead:

Hi Trouble:

I saw Ms. Park on a panel at BEA this year. Quite charming & the book has been doing quite well here at our library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am ausmanx:

nice that everyone's reading relatively old books. i am proposing a STOP ART campaign. we don't need any new stuff (writing, painting, music). meanwhile, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who should have won a Nobel, but they never give them to Asian writers (3 times in over 100 years) en.wikipedia.org...
  10:28am SeanG:

the piano is singing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am sphere:

my brain is tackling an introduction to Deleuze but my heart is reading a Jack Vance omnibus.
Avatar 10:29am fred:

@Trouble: that book looks good. Should I read Jane Eyre first? I have Middlemarch on my maybe list too, but somehow I always put off these
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am ausmanx:

come on, Fred, you mentioned Middlemarch a year ago. it's essential!
Avatar 10:34am fred:

@ausmanx: I couldn't disagree more with you (re: no new art). For instance, I wish Colson Whitehead would release a new book. But I'm foremost a dance fan, which I think has to be experienced, so I'm biased

I've just finished reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot www.amazon.com... It's non-fiction, about how a poor black tobacco farmer had cells taken from her body for research and they kept dividing and living. Neither she nor her family have benefitted from the money that big pharma has made from the cells but the cells have been used to cure diseases and so on. It's extremely well-researched and written and is well worth a read.
Avatar 10:37am Trouble:

fred i loved jane eyre but you don't need to read it before you read re jane.
Avatar 10:40am fred:

To be honest, I'm likely to embark on another dive into Kripke's take on modal logic soon. Work...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Webhamster Henry:

I was reading Italo Calvino's the Non-Existent Knight. I'd like to animate it some time (there was a version from 1969 .. kind of eclectic, but I'd do it like Cartoon Saloon "The Secret of Kells")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am common:

that would be great animated, webhampster! a lot of his stuff...like the baron in the trees

Merci pour le shout out Trouble, and yeah, I think Misiaczek did a great job, and I meant the music, but especially the lyrics. There is a lot of underground musician in France that our being super trendy now with very dark lyric, about beers and car parks and suburbs, Misiaczek is just quite something else… plain out there lyrics.
