A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

bonjour and good morning. happy bastille day!
Avatar 9:04am duke:

Good morning Trouble and Troublers
Got any songs about Pluto?
Avatar 9:04am fred:

Great opening track, goofy yet political too
Avatar 9:04am Trouble:

sugarwolf, i brought some of your favorites...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am sugarwolf:

merci, Trouble!!

Crazy uncle Pierre!

...and GREETS, peeps!
Avatar 9:07am northguineahills:

Pierre Henry is exactly what I need in the morning, thanks, oh, and brigitte w/ areski was perfect too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am sphere:

Monsieur Henry is a great way to start the day. Startle you awake, he will....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Webhamster Henry:

Time to burn down a prison and eat French food like Croque Monsieur and Marron Glacee. Actually, I'd really like a Salade Niçoise for lunch.
Avatar 9:08am fred:

I had no idea it was called "bastille day" before listening to WFMU. It came in handy in explaining why nobody's around to Californians yesterday.
Major props for playing some other than Psyché Rock from that record
  9:09am Adrian in London:

Bonjour! The French are revolting! etc etc
Avatar 9:09am Polyus:

Somehow I suspect we won't be hearing 'Bastille Day' by Rush.
Avatar 9:13am fred:

@Polyus: I think only Meghan is allowed to play Rush on these airwaves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Webhamster Henry:

I used to play C'est Si Bon off a 10" Eartha Kitt record .just as crackly as this one. Maybe you have some Josephine Baker too (also on 10").
Avatar 9:14am specksnyder:

Morning everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am sphere:

It'd be kind of cool if Rush did Francophone versions of their most popular songs.
Avatar 9:17am fred:

I wonder if Trouble will play something by someone I know
Avatar 9:18am Trouble:

figured out why there was no image!!! please refresh!
Avatar 9:18am Trouble:

today's artist is sonia delaunay
Avatar 9:18am fred:

Where is Pierre?
  9:22am Adrian in London:

There's a big Sonia Delaunay show on at Tate Modern in London at the moment. Keep meaning to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am ausmanx:

sonia's stuff is heaps more interesting than her husband's
Avatar 9:30am northguineahills:

I don't anyone would complain if some classic IRCAM was played today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am listener james from westwood:

The only song I can think of that mentions Pluto is that "Interplanet Janet" cut from the Schoolhouse Rocks! short. No idea if there are any that star Pluto rather than cameo it.

Avatar 9:34am fred:

@NGH: I might, but that's only because I work there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Grok-o-matic:

what is this glorious sound my ears receive on such a fine Tuesday morning.
Avatar 9:39am Trouble:

that eartha kitt was off an orange 10" @webmaster henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

One of Pluto's moons is Styx and there's a band with that name. Just sayin'.

Avatar 9:43am northguineahills:

I forgot to add *think*, brain not work good yet.

@Fred: Outside of some spectralist composers over 10 years ago, I don't think I've heard anything great from IRCAM.
Avatar 9:46am bobdoesthings:

good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Webhamster Henry:

@ngh + @Fred I like the late Jonathan Harvey's work. But I too am a spectralist: www.echonyc.com...
Avatar 9:48am northguineahills:

Souper happy thanks for the link Webhamster Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'Pluto Drive' by Creatures that is...
Avatar 9:48am fred:

@RRN63: this looks convincingly meaningless
@NGH: Unfortunately, composers here are too conceptual for my taste. Talking to them beats listening to their music. Sadly, that's by design. One once told me his music was meant to be read, not heard. A rising star over here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@fred: haha!
  9:49am blee:

Good Morning, Earthlings.
  9:50am Tom L.:

Trouble's affinity for the French has never been explained to me. I find nothing wrong with her mini obsession, in fact I like it.
Avatar 9:51am βrian:

My, how did le quatorze sneak up so quickly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Webhamster Henry:

Her name is actually pronounced "T'roo-bluh"
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

Yes, as in Trouble Entendre.
Avatar 9:53am fred:

@Webhamster Henry: Harvey was a true original, a great loss. I heard many cool stories about him, how he pretended to have no clue about technology to prop up others. In this field of bloated egos, that's rare. Marco Stroppa is another good guy by most accounts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Greg from Bloomfield:

Morning, gang!
Avatar 9:55am fred:

@ βrian: you do know that "double entendre" isn't even actual French, don't you?
  9:55am Tom L.:

Ha ha ha. It's just that she seems to play more French stuff than most any other DJ. Oo la la!!
Avatar 9:56am Trouble:

it's true tom L , I do! i can't explain it either. what's not to love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Adrian in London:

Hey Trouble, on a French music subject, can you send felicitations to Guuzbourg, who runs the Filles Sourires blog, because he and his girlfriend have had a baby boy this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am ausmanx:

if you've had a French partner for ten years, you find that there's quite a lot not to love, but there are compensations too...
Avatar 9:58am marc15:

Good morning
Avatar 10:00am bobdoesthings:

ohhhh it's bastille day. Now I get it.
Avatar 10:00am fred:

@ausmanx: I hope that comment won't get you in too much trouble, though that would be appropriate
Avatar 10:00am marc15:

Happy Bastille Day
Avatar 10:01am northguineahills:

I once got thrown out of a club while djing by the manager for playing les georges leningrad.
Avatar 10:01am duke:

Trouble likes birds also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...having had my attempt to communicate in French dismissed as meaningless - I feel I have had an authentic encounter for Bastille Day...
Avatar 10:02am Marcel M:

Crack in half like a lobster.... hahahahhhaha. Wow thats dumb.
  10:03am blee:

That is very poor love making.
Avatar 10:03am marc15:

I met a guy who told that same "crack you--" comment to me
Avatar 10:03am Marcel M:

I'm amazed when dudes rap over what they are listening to VERY loudly on the train. And they are like, rapping basically about raping women. And there are children and old ladies all around.... its very strange.
Avatar 10:04am marc15:

I guess it's not just a straight thing
Avatar 10:04am fred:

@RRN63: don't take my reply as a dismissal! French is meant to be meaningless and confusing, so I was praising your fluency
Avatar 10:04am bobdoesthings:

something tells me no one creating that music even had a moment of consideration nor would care if you are offended.. I don't think we need to Tipper Gore them all...
Avatar 10:05am βrian:

@fred: Hah, it is now. (À bas l'Académie !)
  10:05am enrique71:

s'rai = "serai" "when I am old"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am sphere:

These days, rap has decided that the quickest way to fame and money is appealing to the lowest common denominator. They aren't alone tho (Jelly Roll Morton, I'm looking at you).
  10:05am enrique71:

Actually your French pronunciation is getting better Trouble. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Aggros & Eros...
- Oh cheers fred! - just Google translate. The authentic encounter continues...
Avatar 10:07am fred:

Stupid rap only outs a stupid rapper. Listen to Billy Jam for the real thing
Avatar 10:07am Trouble:

merci enrique 71!! that makes so much sense now that you point it out...
Avatar 10:07am Marcel M:

Lots of assholes don't care what people think of them Bob, whats your point?
Avatar 10:08am bobdoesthings:

@marcel -were you listening?
Avatar 10:08am Marcel M:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Webhamster Henry:

OK, Brel is Belgian, but we'll let that pass.
Avatar 10:11am bobdoesthings:

what @fred said.
Avatar 10:11am northguineahills:

What Fred said.... his show keeps my faith in hiphop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am sugarwolf:

When I was doing inventory/warehouse work, some of the other units would play some uh.... interesting music.

And some of the other people would have pretty gross conversations. There is one I am soooo glad I missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Webhamster Henry:

should be "ne me quitte pas" </picky comment>
  10:13am ?:

Hi Trouble! I have always loved your show! Havent tuned in- in about a year!! (New job I can listen again :) Love all the French. x
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Adrian in London:

Lots of bad rap but some interesting, non-mysogynistic stuff too; Mick Jenkins' Water[s] mixtape is astonishingly good. Probably too potty-mouthed to be played on the radio, unfortunately. Ka's Days With Dr Yen Lo is really worth checking out too.
Avatar 10:15am Trouble:

merci "?".
Avatar 10:16am Marcel M:

Bad rap is popular but there is good underground rap just as bad rock is popular where there is good underground rock... its no mystery.
  10:16am enrique71:

I love the last stanza of Ne me quitte pas... so tragic: "Let me be your shadow, the shadow of your shadow, the shadow of your hand, the shadow of your dog"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Adrian in London:

I realise my last post was the equivalent of "not all men". As to why lots of rap is mysogynistic it's probably because lots of men are mysogynistic and most rappers seem to be men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am sugarwolf:

ha ha, I think you've just proved your point, Trouble!! I love this album, but the subject matter is a bit O_0.
Avatar 10:18am egal:

Male rappers have low self esteem issues.
Avatar 10:18am Marcel M:

Was it Joe McGasko's show where we were talking about how its better to listen to Serge without understanding the lyrics?
Avatar 10:19am Trouble:

thanks for the info adrian! i brought some of the filles sourires compilations in to the studio today.
Avatar 10:20am Trouble:

exactement sugarwolfe!
Avatar 10:20am northguineahills:

Sort of like when you look at the translation of "Histoire de Melody Nelson"? (Still a fave album of mine)>
Avatar 10:20am Marcel M:

Woah, I thought that was gonna go into Whole Lotta Love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am ausmanx:

fred, i think the person in question would agree with me. and i'm sure you know what i mean!
Avatar 10:21am Trouble:

those are beautiful lyrics enrique 71, thanks!
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

@Marcel: I think it's better not to understand the lyrics a lot of the time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am ausmanx:

i wish i didn't understand the lyrics of a lot of English songs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am sugarwolf:

@NGH: yeah I love that album too but oooooo boy
Avatar 10:23am βrian:

If the lyrics don't work as pillow talk, they just don't work.
Avatar 10:24am bobdoesthings:

I concur with joe and with trouble earlier.. I've looked up translations to lyrics and I don't think it's ever done anything but depreciate the enjoyment. .. Better off not knowing what foreign music is saying. it's more beautiful to not have associations
  10:26am Ryab:

This sounds so great. It's taking me out of myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's similar - but not identical - to the question of people who got the wrong end of the stick in Punk. Like HipHop - they are forms thru which an UnderClass expresses all that is not expressed anywhere else & is otherwise bottled up. This can be done consciously or not - & challenges all our value judgements in society. The exposition of the reality of the constant hair-trigger struggle to survive & get out of the 'ghetto' always strikes me w/ HipHop - like, even the worst of it is informative to me as reportage - & it's awkward to preach values on someone under those pressures. I get bored & disgusted w/ thuggish self-aggrandizement - but I'm conflicting about faulting people in that situation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Webhamster Henry:

Fortunately, WFMU plays more incomprehensible lyrics and languages than other stations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am common:

trouble and all good day!
Avatar 10:27am βrian:

I've heard nothing of "la gloire" or "la patrie." That's a good thing.
Avatar 10:28am βrian:

@RR: But can't they just wait until they're handed the talking stick?
Avatar 10:29am bobdoesthings:

@revrabbit - well put!!
Avatar 10:29am northguineahills:

Well, unless I've heard a song in English a hundred times or so, I probably have no idea what the lyrics are, so, I have that going for me....
  10:30am blee:

Chouette was a rather beautiful song. Her voice moved me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That's an explicit part of HipHop's mode: no one else will hand them a chance to express, & there's no time for subtlety on the street.
  10:31am blee:

Or was that adele?
Avatar 10:35am marc15:

I'm sure Rick Blaine would give you permission to play "La Marseillaise"
Avatar 10:36am βrian:

@marc15: Now *there* are some lyrics you don't want to understand.
  10:40am testingwithfire:

my first reaction: wow, trouble is playing a lot of French tunes. Then I remembered the date. (scuttles off)

Avatar 10:45am βrian:

Avatar 10:50am marc15:

Lyrics to what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes Trouble - this is why I like the word 'Socialism' - it has 'society' as a root - & we are a society. Libertarianism is a fantasy of a simplistic world that never existed.
We've got to live together.
The older civilizations of Europe have figured out that everyone will get old & sick, & Health Care will cost something, & it might as well be addressed in some civil manner.

Avatar 11:36am bobdoesthings:

AHHH!!! NICE! did I call it or are you being nice to me?!
Avatar 11:38am fred:

@RRN63: in hip-hop as in punk, some (definitely not all) early ones were from a arty background. And some middle-class posers then overplayed the inner-city struggle. Owls are not what they seem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@fred: True - HipHop's certainly big business. But that's part of it too: there's money out there, & some got it & some don't.
My emphases are very Marxist realpolitik today!
There's also always the question w/ such Art of chicken or egg : are you expressing the struggle, or self-perpetuating your alienation as a 'stance'...
