Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Uncle Mike - I was humming the Mannix theme just yesterday. Stupid show, nice theme!

That's funny, I just noted on Doug's playlist comments that for me this time the switchover to Topeka did NOT require restarting the Flash stream. I guess it affects different, uh, receivers differently.

Paisleys or electric bananas...? Hmmm...
Avatar 12:18pm still b/p:

A passel o' premonitions. Last night, for who knows what reason, a minute before I turned in I was thinking about some favorite Saturday Night Fever lines, from different moments of the same scene:

"We'd like a lemon with some tea now."

"Well, that's the way they took the poison in those days."

Crazy On You reminds me of hearing it on the radio as I moved custom vans indoors for the night at a car dealership.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

Were they rockin'? Did you bother knockin'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 12:25pm still b/p:

I'll tell ya this: them particular custom vans wuz uuuuugly and unlovable.

SNF surprised me when I first saw it in the day, better than my expectation it being most low and awful. Some of it really is terrible, but I have a fondness for sections. Saw a documentary a few years ago with participants talking in most serious and subjective terms about the experience and project's impact.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

It was really great, Mike...no matter what Ira Robbins finds to nit pick about the guest's point of view.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:56pm efd:

Thanks Mike! I'd certainly rank it highly on my list of favorite shows I've done - I hope you enjoy it.
(and thanks UM too!)
  1:58pm Robert:

Gah! Of all things, my EYES take a beating going out from this unlit room & display screen into all that noon-lit white out there.

Dean, the simulation takes place in a flask that's stirred under hydrochloric acid & enzyme conditions, simulating the stomach, for an hour, then neutralized with baking soda w more enzymes & bile extract added for 4 more hrs. stirring, simulating intestine. The bile extract is like soap, so when the baking soda is added to the acid, it foams like crazy.
  2:00pm Dean:

Well thanks a lot, Robert. I was just about to head out for lunch. On second thought, maybe stay put for another set or two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Sit. Stay. Good boy.
  2:01pm Len:

As long as you're asking, I've had enough of this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Fair enough!
  2:02pm V Priceless:

Bed music's fine, especially Free Design!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm pacific standard simon:

Change is good. You notice I'm constantly switching my little user picture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Uncle Michael:

now that you mention it...
  2:04pm Robert:

Monica has the best talkover music. However, you've got to consider how the DJ voice & other surrounding factors, so I'm not suggesting you pick up hers now that she's not using it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm pacific standard simon:

Go for a REAL change. Sounds of the dragstrip. Ballpark crowd noise. Circus background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

It's funny, when I came to GDTR/WFMU, I didn't know much about other DJs beds, set pieces, etc. I was kind of sad and delighted when became aware of Fabio's use of Mr. Giant Man...which I would totally play ...but won't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

I have hung a mic out the window for birdsong bed music.
Avatar 2:09pm ndbob:

great early version here!
  2:09pm Robert:

Dragstrip sounds went with WildGirl's program. Circus & ballpark go with Megan's. Getting hard to come up with REAL change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm pacific standard simon:

Yeah, that was good. There's a web site called "One Minute Vacations" that plays around with 60-second ambient recordings.
  2:10pm Dean:

Somewhere there's a series of mp3s of beat-up calliopes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Ambient High School Cafeteria sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm listener james from westwood:

I dig the current beds, but I dig change and learning new music, so I say swap in some new ones for spring if you've got a few possible candidates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm listener james from westwood:

As for other DJs' beds? I say play 'em. It's always fun to hear them sans back-announce. I've heard 2 this week (you and Charlie) and it makes for some brain-awakening cognitive dissonance. Anything to knock off the crust and remnants of old editing jobs stuck up in there!

@mikeeast's reliable source

also, nice work selecter @um
Avatar 2:12pm still b/p:

Linda Ronstadt...like cilantro, a particular taste, and without anything personal, I just never liked her music. So I'm glad to hear that earlier, better-to-me version of a heavily Linda-associated tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

thanks Simon
  2:13pm Robert:

SoundCloud has tons of recordings of various machinery & other noises. What represents hinky-dinkiness that doesn't tread on Jim Price's theme music territory?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

thanks, John
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Mike East:

Hey whaddup, johnk77. Ain't no source more reliable than you!
  2:14pm Dean:

In Linda's defense, she does "I Will Always Love You" right. Dolly's version is, of course, solid, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm listener james from westwood:

oh HELL yes "Fernando"!
Avatar 2:14pm ndbob:

Great song!!

you could play the finnish cover version of mr. giant man.

Big train stations used to sound nice before automated announcements. When there was just one guy on the mic. Bit like DJs. Uber cool show as usual Unc.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Mike East:

This is one of those songs that pops into my head randomly, often. such an earworm....I gotta learn more of the words.

They originally wanted to call themselves "Able was I ere I saw Elba," but their manager nixed the idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Len.
  2:18pm Robert:

Speaking of appropriation of arty bits, the guy I'm Webmaster for in our church just got a settlement offer of $89 & take-down from the stock cartoon he had me put on our front page a couple years ago. And he can't claim non-commercial use, because we link to another page where we sell literature. Heh...and if anybody searched that literature, they'd find a good deal of pirated artwork too, according to a mutual friend. I'm just following orders.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm efd:

@Len, there was a several-year period of time when I longed to be the train/track announcer in Penn Station.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Brian in UK:

Like the bed music, Uncle.
Avatar 2:20pm still b/p:

The band was founded by and named for Abba Eban, distinguished Israeli, politician, diplomat, scholar who could rock a satin one-piece.
  2:20pm Dean:

@Robert, Even non-commercial use isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card. It's just one factor weighing in favor of fair use.

2 things - mr. giant man has a fucking spectacular bass line, and two, my local goodwill has about 30,000 james last albums, and not one copy of voodoo party.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm pacific standard simon:

Need to look for that Everly Bros. album.
  2:31pm Robert:

My friend's use is strictly UNfair. He makes up standards to justify his ripping stuff off while considering his own creations proprietary. I proofread & copy edit his mss., and often find long plagiarized passages. Sometimes he violates copyrights with attribution (the easiest to detect), other times he plagiarizes in ways that may not be copyright-violating but are unethical, and sometimes he does both at once.

When he bought a computer game for us to play, I installed it on my computer for us to do so, but later, when he told me he was playing it solo on his computer, I deleted my copy. He made fun of how I respected their commercial rights. (I don't follow ALL the rights they claim on software, because they're ridiculous, but I try to go by 1 license = use on 1 computer at a time.)
  2:35pm Dean:

@Robert, You correctly navigate the copyright/plagiarism strait. Some violation of copyright with attribution is fair use, some isn't. Some plagiarism violates copyright and some doesn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Lewis:

This JD McPherson effort is quite good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

That's from the first album. The second came out last month. I'd like to see him live.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:38pm drr:

I think maybe the first Jd McPherson was a bit more rockin' than the new one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm listener james from westwood:

Robert, I found a goodly chunk of the Wikipedia entry for "2001: A Space Odyssey" in a book a publisher had sent me to edit, in thinly rewritten form, presumably after it had gone thru developmental editing, etc. I'd already been alerted to possible Wiki boosts after I Googled a fact in the MS and the Wiki snippet on the results page caught my eye (wouldn't use Wiki for fact-checking) and I noticed the text matched the book. Amazing what people will try to get away with.

  2:40pm Robert:

Dean, I just note his rip-offs in passing. I don't police them. If he says put it in, I put it in. But putting up a cartoon that has an obvious ownership notice, not some hidden watermark, that's just dumb. Here 'tis until we take it down:

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:42pm drr:

Well, you just played the two songs I hum the most. Maybe I'm not alone.
  2:42pm Dean:

Hilarious. Not the cartoon so much, but the fact that in addition to the copyright notice there's an invitation to obtain reproduction rights!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Uncle Michael:

glad you like those two , drr
  2:47pm Robert:

Meanwhile my friend wants to get some disparaging remarks about him on a Web site taken down. He's hypocritic/special pleading a lot like this. But overall he's a good guy.

Albert Maysles death confirmed. I'll re-mention Grey Gardens is on TCM his weekend, Sunday 10 AM.

I pointed out the foolishness of that one to him at the time. It's stock. Its reason for being is to license to others for $. Who'd have greater motiv'n to protect their rights?
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Brian in UK:

Cyril in question is Cyril Knowles the Tottenham Hotspurs football clubs full back. Geezer.
