Season greetings Irene, hello one and all
Avatar 9:01pm Parq:

Spence! Oh man, this is so great.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Sean in Bristol UK:

So looking forward to a plethora of non commercial Christmas themed ditties!
  9:03pm adrian in mpls:

Happy Tuesday-ish evening-solstice-ish all! Lovely to be here!

Happy holidays, everyone!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Tree looks lovely, Irene.
  9:05pm adrian in mpls:

I do have to say that during the last few days WFMU has somehow made me like holiday music again! An xmas miracle! (Although, of course, it's the wFMU-ness of these holiday songs I like)
  9:06pm V Priceless:

Evening Irene!

Dan Hicks!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Talking of which, Adrian, I guess you have more commercial fare being played in stores, shopping malls etc your side of the pond?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Irene Trudel:

Happy Merry Krimble everybody! Hoping to put you all in the holiday spirit. Sean, you'll be happy to note Mr. Met in a stocking cap near the bottom of the tree.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Just spotted him, awesome Irene! Great article in yesterday's NY Times, our Metsies are the same odds as that mob in the Bronx for next season making the playoffs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm adrian in mpls:

@Sean - yr right. you end up hearing the same song over and over again wherever you go. like, the same 10 songs everywhere. thankfully, i haven't been subjected to any of it this year - thanks to the combo of headphones and no money to do any shopping with!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Sean in Bristol UK:

This yuletide music is a blessed relief from the usual offerings on the usual music stations over here which got me thinking. Anybody fancy listing the top three crimble tunes of a more commercial bent. The criteria is one, the choice of tunes makes you want to throw an imaginary brick at an imaginary radio and two the choices brings you out in a cold sweat, as in you will or have heard this fine tunage whilst shopping at the eleventh hour to get that bag of walnuts or jar of cranberry you forgot whilst battling the hordes at your local Target or Safeway!
Avatar 9:21pm Van in DC:

I knew I was forgetting something. Dang it. I was watching a movie.

Hi Irene and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Irene Trudel:

Yeah, it's inundation of the same old Xmas tunes in every store. Maybe that's one of the reasons it was chaos in the grocery store I stopped in earlier tonight. I'm trying hard to at least play alternative versions of the usual Christmas fare.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My three in no particular order is Wham "Last Christmas", Slade "Merry Christmas" and Chris Rea "Driving Home for Christmas". Chris, you have been driving home for Christmas for the last thirty years or so. Obviously you are lost, you need to invest in a satnav, pal!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Sean in Bristol UK:

VAAAAN! Merry Christmas.
Avatar 9:24pm Van in DC:

Love the snap crackle pops!

HI SEAN! Most Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm redkayak:

Good tunes to wrap gifts by :)
Avatar 9:26pm Van in DC:

I was actually watching The Secret Life of Walter Mitty...looked to be a good film. I'll resume tomorrow :)
  9:26pm V Priceless:

For some reason I always find myself revisiting Strawbs 'Benedictus' this time of year, though not a holiday tune per se.
Avatar 9:28pm Van in DC:

Irene, the tree looks gorgeous! All of those VHS tapes,... wow! Love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm adrian in mpls:

Hmmmm.....good question on those songs, Sean. (And I must confess, I really like the Wham and Slade songs!) I think mine have to be: "Do They Know It's Christmas?", "Jingle Bell Rock", and that absolutely horrible Chipmunks Christmas song -- that last one makes me stabby!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Sean in Bristol UK:

I have an unlimited card with my local multiplex, as many films you can watch for $20 a month. I was scrapping the bottom of the barrel over the weekend, went to see "Annie", wasn't as grim as I thought it would be.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Adrian, 'stabby', love it! That's my phrase for this holiday season.
  9:31pm jon:

hi irene and everybody here tonight.

the keeptru tree is a class act just like the keeptrus
Avatar 9:32pm Van in DC:

Movies: I suppose over the long weekend that at some point I will go see the final Peter Jackson Hobbit film. Just to close it out. And then I'll go see Interstellar in IMAX again :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Come on Van, what's your top three?
Avatar 9:33pm Van in DC:

Sean - top three Xmas songs?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Yes, my friend, scroll back to read the fun rules!!
Avatar 9:36pm Van in DC:

Ah, so basically guilty pleasures of Xmas songs past? That sort of thing?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Yes sir, I could add a plethora of hits to my list that makes me want to hibernate!
  9:38pm Robert:

Are there other lyrics to this "Christmas Bells"? I recall it as somehow having nothing to do with Christmas. Or maybe I'm confusing it with a very similar song.
Avatar 9:38pm Van in DC:

David Bowie & Bing Crosby - Little Drummer Boy is one
  9:38pm V Priceless:

XTC 'Thanks for Christmas' is one you don't hear often enuff.
Avatar 9:39pm Van in DC:

Do They Know It's Christmas I guess would be 2
  9:40pm blee:

Dory Previn!
Avatar 9:40pm Van in DC:

I can't think of another. Mostly because except for a certain KaTe song, I pretty much hate Christmas songs in general, and the whole holiday in particular.
  9:41pm Robert:

Now I recognize the tune I have it mixed up with, I just can't recall the name or lyrics.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Message to the powers that be of all the more commercialised stations, please listen to Irene's Christmas show and please don't put us through this torture each year, I thank you!
Avatar 9:42pm Van in DC:

Ava Maria for #3
  9:44pm Robert:

Darn, I need that app that Ken & Andy tested!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm redkayak:

Got any music out there to make wrapping up a pair of socks easier?
Avatar 9:46pm Van in DC:

Well, Silent Night by Stevie Nicks always gets my attention as well.
  9:46pm JakeGould:

Happy last day of Hanukkah, Happy Festivus, and happy day before Christmas Eve as well as 2 days before Boxing Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Well, so much for the idea of listening to Tom Scharpling tonight!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Jake, yes, Happy Boxing Day, my favourite time of the holiday season, down the pub for a few drinky-poos!
  9:48pm Robert:

Got it! It's the refrain from the one that starts, "You go way too fast/If you don't slow down, you're going to crash." "Christmas Bells" reminds me of its refrain.
Avatar 9:48pm Van in DC:

Grrrr Sean I spend so much time trying to BLOCK OUT Christmas and its songs that you could not have asked me a harder question :)
Avatar 9:50pm Van in DC:

But, by the way, lovely Christmas green with red letters on the playlist. Perfectly done.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Maybe I could jog your memory, Mr Mccartney, Miss Carey, jonah Lewis just to shame some illustrious company
Avatar 9:54pm Van in DC:

I would be more likely to remember something by Michael Oldfield, Japan, Toyah, Cocteau Twins, Pentangle, Sandy Denny, Tangerine Dream, or even Nina Hagen
  9:54pm JakeGould:

Cheers Sean! I only drink nowadays to celebrate, so if I were in the U.K. I would share a pint with you!
Avatar 9:55pm Van in DC:

thank you!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Now you get a song like this and you feel all warm, fuzzy and full of Christmas cheer. Come on Van, embrace this wonderful time of year, you know you want to!!
  9:55pm MrC in Hollywood:

Let's Christmas Merry! Lovely tree...shelf looks a little worse for wear...
  9:56pm Toddophonic:

Beautiful show tonight, Irene. Lots of songs I'm hearing for the first time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, Van! Calling All Angels is one of Jane's "hits." I just got to see the last night of her run at Iridium in NYC. I think it was videotaped too. So lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Irene Trudel:

MrC!!!! Happy krimble to you!
10:00pm bill d in Rock Tavern NY:

I'm usually driving home from work and catch the last part of your show but tonight, Maggie and I are listening in the coziness of our own home. Still adjusting to this Tuesday night slot and curious about the switch. Great Xmas show! Going to listen to Coltrane My Favorite Things ans and old Gerald Trimble lp later.
  10:01pm MrC in Hollywood:

Double up on that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Irene Trudel:

Yeah, those videos need Santa to send a them a new shelf. They're quite the leaning tower!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Sean in Bristol UK:

This is a great choice from our royal kateness!
Avatar 10:02pm Van in DC:

I had her No Borders Here & her Speckless Sky albums and that's it. I don't remember that song though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Irene Trudel:

So nice to have you with us tonight Bill, and Maggie too!
10:03pm bill d in Rock Tavern NY:

I'd imagine some rare stuff on those videos
Avatar 10:04pm Van in DC:

I would never not know a KaTe song though :)

So many thanks.
Avatar 10:08pm Van in DC:

Wow. I've been thinking her last name was SIGH-berry for like, three decades?
Avatar 10:10pm Van in DC:

Irene, by the way, I didn't agree with a lot of Soundcheck's end of year rankings. did you have anything to do with that?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Sean in Bristol UK:

I listen to the Soundcheck podcast, good show.
  10:11pm KP:

Merry Merry from Va., Irene!
Avatar 10:11pm Van in DC:

Ah, just saw that Siberry "hit" was from 1992. Way after I had albums from her. (84 85)
Avatar 10:13pm Van in DC:

Marissa Nadler's album at 100? Grr. SVE's Are We There at only 26? GRRRRR.
  10:14pm JakeGould:

Van, we’re not here to listen to NPR for a reason… Catfeeeshee?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Just curious, aren't you guys all turkeyed out after last month's shindig?
Avatar 10:18pm Van in DC:

Was that NPR? Maybe it was. I've been looking at a lot of different year end lists. Maybe it wasn't Soundcheck then.
Avatar 10:19pm Van in DC:

@Sean - no.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Irene Trudel:

Van, I had nothing to do with the choices for Soundcheck this year. It was all chosen by others on staff. And I definitely have nothing to do with NPR music-- a whole different entity. Hi KP! Hope you and The Missus enjoy your Christmas there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Mike East:

hey Irene. I see on your flikr you saw John Pizzarelli. He rehearses here a lot. Definitely our NICEST client. His dad was in the other day with him, too.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Jake, I will raise a tankard of Christmas themed mead to you, sir. there will probably be an ale with a snazzy name, Rudolf the Red Nose ale or something of that ilk!
Avatar 10:22pm Van in DC:

I come here for the best anyway :)
  10:24pm KP:

Irene, I'm not sure they know it's Christmas after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Mike! Yes, Pizzarelli and his wife Jessica Molasky were a big part of the Jonathon Schwartz Xmas Show at Birdland, which I helped mix. They really are nice people and keep Mr. Schwartz from going off on too many talk tangents. And John organizes the band every year. I've actually grown quite fond of the event.
  10:26pm JakeGould:

Van, my musical life has been tons better since I stopped paying attention to any music list… I think the last ones I read or paid attention to were in Tower Record’s “Pulse”… Those “desert island discs” lists.
Avatar 10:27pm Van in DC:

Irene - there was a certain DVD I thought might be available for XMas, which I guess it is not. It remains my promise to you to get you a copy when it is out. I'm talking KaTe.

@Jake - I don't really pay them any attention at all actually. I just go by what I find out from these people right here. At FMU.
Avatar 10:29pm Van in DC:

regarding musical year end lists - it is only because I follow some accounts on twitter so as not to miss my treasured artists that I know of such year end lists.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Haven't seen a release date for that yet, have you, Van?
Avatar 10:29pm Van in DC:

I have not, Sean.
Avatar 10:32pm Van in DC:

Sean - you need to sleep :)

*I* need to sleep, and I'm like five hours behind you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Mike East:

sounds like fun, Irene. Reigning in Jonathan Schwartz must be a skill unto itself.
Avatar 10:38pm Van in DC:

Well I applaud you Sean!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Irene Trudel:

Van, I don't have that one of KaTe's. It's not in our library here either. I'll have to see if Spotify has it.

By the way Irene - the back to back of the Siberry song with the KaTe song was genius. From calling all angels to being among them...nicely done.
