Wowee Zowee is such a great album and this is such a great song from that album.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:02am mariano:

Eff yeah, Therese!
Avatar 12:03am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

My weeks start thrown to the pavement too often. It is refreshing to have the tables turned for once.

No 'one' ever listens to me...Why should I be so old???...:)O(:..

Effin' Ef yeah is right, DJ Therese!

Hi all! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Therese! Hope you're doing well tonight. =)

  12:05am JakeGould:

Hello! Very 1990s here I see.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:05am Skirkie:

Jeez Therese, how did you know all my favorite songs?
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:05am phat:

What year is this?
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:05am phat:

Avatar 12:05am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

And now the Breeders. I like your show because we apparently came through a lot of the same musical avenues. Cheers to that.
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:05am phat:

Seriously, just hearing these tunes together made me all mushy.
  12:06am JakeGould:

I like to go down musical service roads.
  12:06am ccrides:

I kinda like Paul Revere and the Raiders..!..hehehe...:)O(:..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:06am mariano:

I forgot Last Splash was still 4AD.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:07am Skirkie:

♥ Kim Deal forever.
  12:07am P-90:

Two songs in and the board is already filling with rave reviews, way to start a show, T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am Therese:

I have been in a big time 90s mood lately. Be warned!!
  12:08am KP:

Hi, Therese
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:08am Skirkie:

She says it like it's a bad thing.
  12:08am ccrides:

Nobody can go wrong playing 'Tool', though?!?...:)O(:..
Avatar 12:11am BadGuyZero:

Will there be set of 90s Earache? Fudge Tunnel, Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death, Pitchshifter and Carcass would be great!
  12:12am ccrides:

I remember when Donovan was on Jonesville Station...damn...that was a good show!!!...:)O(:..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13am pacific standard simon:

Let's see... '90s... if you play Matthew Sweet, Hole, Teenage Fanclub, Cub... I'll be OK.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:13am mariano:

90s? How about Brainiac or Some Velvet Sidewalk?
Avatar 12:13am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Some Velvet Morning is one of the creepiest and awesomest Lee Hazelwood songs, both of which are saying something.
  12:14am JakeGould:

This is a well steered 1990s list. Good work!
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:14am phat:

I keep meaning to find playlists from the local college station from the 90s. I know there are a ton of songs/bands that I've forgotten but enjoyed at the time.
  12:15am ccrides:

Seeing Red...BBL...:)O(:..
  12:15am P-90:

and don' forget The Jesus Lizard, and Hootie, and Spin Doctors
...OK maybe you can forget those
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am pacific standard simon:

I remember when Donovan was on Jonesville Station, too; I got in a big gripe session on the message board about what a poser Donovan was.
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:15am phat:

YES! Swervedriver!
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:16am phat:

Hitting on all cylinders tonight Therese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am pacific standard simon:

Hmm, Steel Pole Bathtub? Brian Jonestown Massacre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21am pacific standard simon:

Oh, and The Muffs! Gotta have The Muffs!
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:21am phat:

My God Therese.
Avatar 12:22am egal:

  12:23am nate:

oh for god's sake, i left the room for 5 minutes and you played that swervedriver song?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:23am mariano:

Helium, Babes in Toyland, Sebadoh... the list goes on. I'm so used to thinking the 90s sucked that I forget sometimes how much good music there was back then.

List, Name of Bands, Things.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:24am Skirkie:

But of course PJ
  12:26am Harry Cataracts:

My favorite PJ Harvey song! Thanks, Therese!!
Avatar 12:26am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I'm gonna be both happy and sad when I come back and listen to the archive I couldn't stay up for. This would be a great night to stay up a few more hours.
Avatar 12:26am Harry Cataracts:

there, that's better
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:27am mariano:

Stay up, Pete!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28am pacific standard simon:

That's what I'm getting at, Mariano. Although I still kinda think that the '90s sucked...
  12:29am JakeGould:

Wait, I need to get a 90 minute cassette to put into my Nakamichi to record this.
Avatar 12:31am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Of course. Last night, in this pouring rain, I built a fire and played Loveless all the way through for the first time in years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am pacific standard simon:

Just copy-and-paste the playlist, dude!
Avatar 12:31am BadGuyZero:

Y-E-S!!! The band that gave me tinnitus!
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:32am phat:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33am pacific standard simon:

In those days, you could have started a band named "The Kims".
Avatar 12:33am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

The MBV show was the only real present-tense-redeeming 90s nostalgia show I went to last year (of so many). And yes, BGZ, blew my friggin right eardrum out for a while.
  12:33am nate:

turned 18 watching this band, now about to turn 40...yikes
Avatar 12:33am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

For a few of us, at least, this night is apparently shooting fish in a barrel.
Avatar 12:34am Harry Cataracts:

wow, you played the Breeders before I got here. This IS favorite song night. Stay up, Pete!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:35am mariano:

Ok, Pete, sounds like there's a consensus building here...
Avatar 12:36am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Crazy, dirty...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:36am mariano:

Oh, too perfect, Stereolab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36am pacific standard simon:

Shonen Knife...
Avatar 12:37am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I hate you all. Thank god I'm working alone tomorrow. I want to hear Sebadoh's "Got It" if I'm going to dig in for this shit.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:38am mariano:

I think you have the force of authority behind you, Pete!
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:38am phat:

You've making me want to call my ex-wife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am pacific standard simon:

You're making me want to smoke cigarettes again.
Avatar 12:40am BadGuyZero:

I'm Ride and Pulp away from B-I-N-G-O.
Avatar 12:42am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I happen to know there's like 1 degree of separation between Therese and folks I was out all night with in the days we're playing the soundtrack of here, and I don't even remember why I know that. I just wish I could drunk-dial them right now.
  12:44am KP:

🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:46am phat:

Calling my ex-wife is a terrible idea, by the way.
  12:47am JakeGould:

What do you want to call your ex-wife?
  12:47am KP:

If I left before you made me realise did I see MBV
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am Therese:

Such is the power of NJ, Pete.
Avatar 12:53am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I curse it every night I spend away from it, Therese.

Avatar 12:57am Whooda:

*peeking from the upturned collar of my trenchcoat* I never get a chance to call my ex-wife anything, she hangs up the phone too quickly. *slipping back into the lurky misty*
Avatar 1:00am BadGuyZero:

Thanks for having them on Therese. I was checking out the handful of tracks they have on Bandcamp and really like what they're doing. Another great discovery made via WFMU!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:02am mariano:

Seems the show is causing a spike in people calling their exes. After a couple more of these Heineken big boys, I might have to jump on that bandwagon!
  1:03am nate:

this really wasn't recorded in 1994?
Avatar 1:06am KP:

Avatar 1:12am Whooda:

Was it the music that caused all of our 90's split-ups?
  1:14am nate:

I broke up with a girl who called swervedriver's lyrics pretentious, so yes
Avatar 1:14am BadGuyZero:

My 90s split-up was caused by my deciding that 19-years-old was the perfect age for getting married.
Avatar 1:15am KP:

Avatar 1:15am Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Great stuff from Overlake (a name like a NJ borough). Next week I will plan ahead, and even if I don't, Sunday night will have a better chance of me lasting than it did tonight.

Until, then, enjoy the rain if it is pouring there like it is here. It is the newest sound in these parts.
Avatar 1:16am KP:

Swervedriver has lyrics?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:16am mariano:

Turning in, Pete? I just got a couple more beers! C'mon!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:17am mariano:

Let's all get drunk and conference call our exes! It'll be very Dr Phil!
Avatar 1:17am KP:

These guys are dramatic. That's everything
  1:19am nate:

also my first breakup occurred while listening to jenny ondioline by stereolab. that song was henceforth perma-banned from my life.
Avatar 1:20am KP:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:22am mariano:

Overlake sounds really good! are they on now, or prerecorded? Nate, to this day I can't listen to Sinead O'Connor's Just Like You Said It Would Be because of a breakup in '88.
Avatar 1:24am Whooda:

@nate those are some serious lyrics to break-up with. I think the point goes to 'the music' on that one.
Avatar 1:27am BadGuyZero:

  1:27am P-90:

@DJ Therese: were they making loops live in the studio?
Avatar 1:28am KP:

Avatar 1:28am Whooda:

@mariano Be careful what you wish for. You think *one* x-wife is hard to deal with, just wait until you get four or five of them together on the phone at the same time to gang-up on you.
Avatar 1:29am KP:

Very awesome guys
Avatar 1:30am Whooda:

@Mariano Two songs make me cry one is Sinead O'Connor's cover of Elton John's Sacrafice.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:31am mariano:

Point taken, Whooda: I've never been married, though I've lived with quite a few exes. Time After Time tends to make my lower lip flutter, though it's not associated with any breakup. What's the other song of the two you mentioned?
Avatar 1:33am KP:

  1:34am P-90:

love that guitar tone
Avatar 1:34am Whooda:

The other song is from the same album, Two Rooms, a Taupin / John tribute. It is Sting's cover of Come Down in Time. It is freakishly close in describing the first days of our relationship.
Avatar 1:35am KP:

Yeah P-90, they really have it all
Avatar 1:36am Whooda:

I wonder if this Overlake session is played in order of performance. It seems to get better with each song to me.
Avatar 1:38am KP:

Havent heard many real breaks Whooda so id say yes
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:39am mariano:

Yeah, sounds live, they mentioned Therese just now... great crescendo!
Avatar 1:39am Whooda:

Psychedelic Furs!!!!
Avatar 1:40am KP:

Avatar 1:40am KP:

So great
  1:42am nate:

OK, just preordered their album
  1:43am nate:

for a second i thought this was going to be a swirlies cover
Avatar 1:44am Whooda:

That is some excellent engineering, as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am Therese:

The Swirlies! I should have played them in the first set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am Therese:

Mike Sin did a fantastic job engineering this set.
Avatar 1:46am BadGuyZero:

@Therese: Any idea if this session will eventually be added to the Free Music Archive?
Avatar 1:47am KP:

Very cool throughout
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am Therese:

BGZ- it will be! With the exception of the covers, I think.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:49am mariano:

Ohh... but this chaotic bit is so good, cover or not!
Avatar 1:49am BadGuyZero:

@Therese: Ten-four. Thanks!

Avatar 2:00am KP:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01am Therese:

Mike Sin said it IN THE PAST, Kurt!
Avatar 2:02am KP:

Are you from the past?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:02am mariano:

KP: yeah, a really skeevy looking place, Motel 19, on Rte 28 up in Ulster County. Meth central, dollars to donuts!
Avatar 2:03am Kurt Gottschalk:

yeah, I know. but i had to LOG IN!
Avatar 2:03am KP:

Urghhhh. They are all squishy floors and rusty screens.
Avatar 2:04am Whooda:

I would be uncomfortable in any Motel 6 that didn't remind me of my uncle's tornado cellar decorated with 'upstairs' cast-offs. Motel 6 and Motel 8 were named for their nightly charge.
Avatar 2:06am Whooda:

Motel 8 was 'fancy smancy'. Motel 19? Forgettaboutit..
  2:06am nate:

when I worked at tower, all anyone asked for was macarena (on cassette single)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:06am mariano:

On the other hand, Kate Pearson has her cool trailer park resort on Rte 28 closer to Phoenicia.
  2:07am nate:

where did all the cassette singles in the world go?
Avatar 2:08am BadGuyZero:

I bet that "Brave" song is probably the current song that would get non-music buyers to annoy their local record store employees.
Avatar 2:09am Whooda:

@nate All of that magnetic tape was used as cactus tinsel in the southern deserts. I think the plastic cases became pebbles in the Painted Desert.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:15am mariano:

Y'know, I always thought it a bit cheap of Sir Elton not to write a whole new song for Di. I remember when I heard it in the news: was going home from a Crash Worship show in Oakland, it was about 7am.
Avatar 2:17am Whooda:

Read today that Sir Elton is tying the knot with his long time honey.
  2:17am nate:

I think Elton was busy filming his cameo for Spice World at the time, it was the best he could do under the circumstances.
Avatar 2:19am BadGuyZero:

When I worked at Borders we had soooooooooo many copies of that "Candle in the Wind" CD single. They were non-returnable since all the proceeds went to charity. I ended up marking a few hundred copies out of inventory each month for several months and destroying them. We had great fun destroying them.
Avatar 2:20am KP:

Hope you burned them, in the wind
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:20am mariano:

Then Mother Theresa died around the same time, prompting that awful joke about "Sandal in the Wind."
Avatar 2:21am Whooda:

@mariano I agree with you in the face value of the song was *not* about Dianne because, of course, it predated her death but I guess the similar circumstances of similarity between MM and the Princess were too much to resist. A form of memorial and protest against the Royals rolled into one convenient million selling package.
Avatar 2:23am KP:

There's a golden torch statue almost exactly where Di was killed in Paris. EVerybody thinks it's a monument to her but it's not.
  2:23am nate:

Can we agree that it was better than rewriting a song from the Lion King soundtrack?
  2:24am P-90:

Glad I'm not the only one who thought it a bit creepy when Sir Elton repurposed his classic Marilyn song as a Lady Di funeral dirge
Avatar 2:28am KP:

Going to roll, Therese. Great work. Goodnight all
  2:28am P-90:

KP: the statue is IN the tunnel?
Avatar 2:28am Whooda:

@P-90 it kind of ruined the song for me. Now when I hear it I don't know if I'm supposed to feel sorry for MM and hate the Kennedys or I'm supposed to feel sorry for Lady Di and hate the inbreed Royals.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:33am mariano:

'Night, KP!
  2:34am P-90:

I don't think the Kennedys were anywhere near Taupin and Elton's intentions when they wrote the song, and likewise I really doubt that Sir Elton meant the remake to be a jab at the Crown, just a tribute to his friend
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:34am mariano:

Yeah, Whooda and P90: seemed a lot like RIP [insert name].
Avatar 2:40am Whooda:

The death of a starlet in itself would be of no consequence and not worth a memorial song. EJ related to the star due to an early influence from her and her story, the 'sacrificial lamb'. John himself became somewhat of a martyr when he came out of the closet inthe 70's. He lived the life. The Kennedy's clan can no more be separated from MM death than Princess Di's from the Royals. Without the power component in both deaths, they would be completely unremarkable.
  2:44am KP:

Joker man called me back. Great version.
