Favoriting November 13, 2013: RAMONES interview from 1976, with interviewer Lisa Jane Persky live in the studio!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

On July 8th, 1976, the Ramones sat down for an interview in the offices of 16 Magazine. It was just 10 weeks after the release of their debut album. Their interviewer was not unknown to them: Lisa Jane Persky was already a regular at CBGB, and she was co-starring off-Broadway with Divine. She was also a co-founder of New York Rocker, the magazine that would publish this interview in issue #4. A couple of years ago Lisa re-discovered the cassette recording of this interview, and she shared the interview in full for the very first time on The Evan "Funk" Davies show. You'll also hear ample reminiscing about New York City at the time punk rock and the CBGB scene was just starting to take off -- with plenty of complementary music, of course! Enjoy this fascinating interview with the Ramones at the dawn of their career.

Sorry. I've had an odd evening. We were talking about KISS in the recording studio. I just now made the connection as to who Ms. Persky is. This whole show has been very entertaining. Fantastic.

...I have often thot that as well-documented as everything seems to be now - all wiki-ed & YouTubed & documentaries about everything - a lot of Punk is surprisingly under-documented *still* - or poorly documented - or I'm just ignorant of it ! ;
- That if the supposed goal of Punk was to demystify Rock & destroy & be fast & disposable - it succeeded all too well ! ...& of course 'Punk' has had a few different major 'waves' & is a debatable term for a range of things too...
...It's *still* outside the Mainstream values...then again diluted & diffused into it...like recently watching American Masters on Lou Reed & Hendrix & point comes up that they're *still* seen as druggy & degenerate, despite status as Artists...& then, (only) now also seeing Punk as part of 1970s continuum, rather than a complete disconjunct...

Did the air signal just go out for anyone?

- altho' what the Ramones did seems on the surface very 'simple' - that is part of its' (why mince words) Pop Art Genius - so its' always interesting to get some insight on influences & where they were coming from. Thanks Very Much !
