A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 10:12am glenn:

i don't normally clicky star whole shows, but i think that's going to change.
Avatar 10:12am Cecile:

It blows me away how many albums and singles went gold outside the "great 60s rock canon". You could spend a whole lifetime finding those.
Avatar 10:13am Pat Byrne:

Tim from Champaign- Pat Longo AKA "Primitive Sound System" is selecting, and he rules.

...Reminded of this PBS Show on Latin Music :
- which I thot good for a very broad topic

Avatar 10:24am Cecile:

I love Budos.

Weird question, but what do you think about Carlos Santana? He was my gateway drug to Latin music, and I still love those old records no matter how heavy-handed he can be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am tim from champaign:

I loooooove the Mahavishnu John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana record "Love Devotion Surrender".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Trouble:

steve monge napoleoni played guitar on cayuco
Avatar 10:26am glenn:

thanks trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...myself - my only critique of Santana is there's not much variation over decades - but what he does is great - one of the most expressive & distinctive guitarists - I mean, c'mon! - & blended Rock & Latin really well - killer killer band! - you know - Hendrix wanted a bigger band, but didn't really manage to get it together...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am SeanG:

Avatar 10:28am glenn:

pro santana - earned many royalties for peter green.

con santana - ruined black magic woman.
  10:29am RevPhil:

Some of these music take me back to the days of Symphony Syd and Dick"Ricardo" Sugar
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

santana also had Michael Olatunji (Drums of Passion) on many of his albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...should be a Show - Best Guitarists No One Knows - & feature lots of Peter Green...
  10:30am Allan in Germany:

pro santana - "love theme from Spatacus"
Avatar 10:30am Magda:

Carlos was not my gateway drug. I was around a lot of latin music growing up, but never knew the artists. I liked the sound. I think there are many songs he does well. I'm not into some of the collaborations he has done.
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

and Jingo is based on Jin go lo ba from Drums of Passion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am KevinfromBayRidge:

Captain! Volume set to100%- consequences be damned!!
Avatar 10:31am βrian:

@KevinfromBayRidge: What??
Avatar 10:32am glenn:

pro santana - used yamaha sg, the most uunderrated electric guitar out there.

con santana - switched to paul reed smith.
Avatar 10:33am glenn:

rrn63 you know right know george barnes is at the top of the list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am tim from champaign:

Imagine what Santana's practice space smelled like in 1970.
Avatar 10:33am Erella:

Trouble, I always enjoy your show but today is the best!
It is also my daughter's TWENTIETH birthday. The music is perfect. Thankyou!
Avatar 10:34am Cecile:

erella, how awesome!
Avatar 10:35am Erella:

Thank you Cecile. Love Joe Bataan, this is fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yes - for a lot of us white Rockers, Santana was the *only* Latin Music we knew @ all. So hard to believe *now* !!
- One thing that helped me was becoming interested in Vodoun & the African roots to Blues & Rock. Latin follows from that. Also - living in Santa Barbara in the sunshine, population 1/3rd Hispanic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Patrick:

loving the show so far trouble!! sounds like you guys are having great fun! wish i was there
Avatar 10:37am Cecile:

I think there have to be artist-driven labels with good lawyers on both sides. Give incentives for musicians to do their own pre-production.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am KevinfromBayRidge:

Brian-Star Trek allusion( reeeal loose)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

George Barnes :
- Thx Glenn!
  10:40am Guido (Cologne Germany):

Wish this show would go on for weeks ...

pro santana:
- introduced Tito Puete's compositions to the rock world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am SeanG:

Didn't Joe Bataan play with Los Cubanos Postizos (Marc Ribot)?
Avatar 10:46am glenn:

when you say far reaching interests, do you mean the over the top insanity of the tea party?
Avatar 10:48am dc pat:

..and the "Tea Party" (which doesn't really exist) = the Republican Party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am tim from champaign:

Joe got blackballed for organizing musicians in the 70s to get health insurance and members of congress are shutting down the country in protest of people accessing insurance 40 years later. That makes me wonder how much fuckin money do those dicks then and now think they're going to lose by people getting insurance?
Avatar 10:51am doca:

is it only my impression or the republican party is shooting at itself while it holds the us government hostage to its anti-health care stance?
And by the way, excellent show, Trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am tim from champaign:

I'm with you, Doca. I'm also pretty disgusted with the other party too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Trouble:

joebataan.com here is joe's wevbsite guys and gals...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Reagan would've been 'too Liberal' for these people...
Avatar 11:01am doca:

I like american politics because you can see all the interests and manoeuvres, sometimes it's like a TV show. But no one can deny they're just playing dumb right now. I'm only glad US doesn't have a tradition of government overthrown just as Brazil does
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am northguineahills:

Too true, Rev Rabbit....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am tim from champaign:

¿Quein es 42?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am northguineahills:

There was that one show on NYC basic access w/ the guy w/ the twirly mustache that had Joe Bataan on it in the Brojx. I saw it about 5 years ago, and Joe stole the protagonist's gf. That's all I remember about that episode.

What ngh said-Awesome show!
Avatar 11:59am glenn:

clicky star clicked.
Avatar 9:49pm Reeshard:

Even though your show ordinarily exemplifies all that is great about free-form radio, today's boogaloo-specific episode was one of your best. I'd actually deem the Avern-Bataan survey something like a public service. An amazing three hours in my early Los Angeles morning. Thank you, Trouble!
