A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:27am the glowing one:

@rrn63: there doesn't seem to be "one" comprehensive box set with all her albums, if you mean that. But there are many compilations with rarer stuff:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Trouble:

this morning's artist is grant huang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this James Blake reminds me of KCRW...be this as it may...
Avatar 9:32am the glowing one:

I prefer original CD releases anyway, not those remastered re-re-releases with extra bonus tracks in a box with a DVD and a finger thick booklet. the first CD release of an old album in most cases sounds the best, so I rather go scavenger hunting for used copies of those 80s CD releases.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am KevinfromBayRidge:

Bon Matin! There I said it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Dominick:

Fine music
Avatar 9:57am duke:

My wife know this song by heart!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - maybe it's that in the beginning they hadn't quite got the hang of what digital mastering was about
...& that they rush-released stuff to cash in on the market of people switching over to CDs

- but ReMastering is not always an improvement as far as some's tastes run...
Avatar 10:02am the glowing one:

nah, they just wanted their music to be louder than the next one. it's like the old "who's got the longer love stick". but just like in biology there's a physical limitation after which things get nasty and ugly.

and with "they" I mean the artists. often people blame the producers hauled in by the record companies and the mastering engineers, as if the artists are victims of the loudness war.
Avatar 10:04am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Trouble - this song made me think of today's Burger King news, that they are introducing a new lower calorie french fry called "satisfries". No joke! www.usatoday.com...
Avatar 10:04am the glowing one:

anyway, I'm not *that* sensible to brickwalled crackling sound.. I just take the older mastering if I can and if there is one by default. not putting too much thought into which release might be the absolute best sounding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Trouble:

ha ha jennique!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Andrew Waterloo:

@the glowing one, loudness is a 90s problem. In the 80s there were a lot of CD releases that were straight transfers from vinyl that where simply anemic and muddy. There were releases where digital remastering amounted to a significant improvement.
Avatar 10:06am the glowing one:

I happen to like the "thin" 80s sound very much
Avatar 10:07am the glowing one:

I just turn the volume up ;)
Avatar 10:07am glenn:

it'd be zex, no?
Avatar 10:08am Cecile:

allergies suck.
Can you put a warm washrag on your forehead.

Get out of my head glowing one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- you *can* tell the Decade something was Mastered in that way!...

...corresponds to the ongoing discussions about Live Volume @ venues - which I tend to see as Post-Rave & Post-HipHop - lotsa massive Bass
- & also P.A. & speaker technology changing...

...I think the 2009 Beatles Remasters are an example of the right amount & the right kind of attention given a Remaster (White Album notably emerges from flat sonic murk, I think)
- even though it noticeably changed the sound of stuff definitively 'Classic'
...& I also wonder why not go all the way & do 20-bit Mastering - &tc. ...
  10:09am Tiago:

I had a sinus infection for 3 week after going diving to 30 mts jsut after clearing the loft with no mask...
I sympathise.
Avatar 10:10am Benjamen Walker:

Trouble! I am scared to come back downstairs to the second floor
oh man - cant believe you are going to have joe on Oct 1st - amazing
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

I couldnt' understand why I respected rather than really liked Husker Du, and it's because they were so treble-happy. Which is funny because their first single is all bassy and PIL-y. Greg Norton rules.
Avatar 10:11am Benjamen Walker:

I don't have any sinus meds either!
Avatar 10:11am Cecile:

joe bataan in the flesh? awesome
Avatar 10:11am Benjamen Walker:

oh wait! I have some strange pill in my bag? do you want it? I can come back downstairs if you unban me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Andrew Waterloo:

The Can remasters are good digital remasters.
Avatar 10:12am the glowing one:

@rrn63: you sure it was only a remaster? probably a proper remixing, too.
@Cecile: fully agree, it didn't take anything away from the music energy, quite the contrary!
Avatar 10:12am Cecile:

Watch Law and Order Criminal Intent.
Avatar 10:13am Cecile:

Flashpoint is also good. And very sincere. And Canadian. Keith Mars, I mean Enrico Colasanto is the lead dude.
Avatar 10:13am egal:

Zombies and meth sell on tv these days.
Avatar 10:15am Cecile:

I like Longmire, and Sleepy Hollow is batshit crazy and kind of amazing because 1) they have a great black actress who is the center of the story for once, and 2) it is so over the top WRONG and completely unconcerned about it, it's refreshing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am MD:

Yes! SInce the Re-election...I have been calling my Reps. as much as possible. It's the first time in my life I have ever done so. We should all do it...it's not hard...make your voices heard...
done so...
Avatar 10:15am Cecile:

Also? Icabod Crane is smoking hot. I hear he goes shirtless next episode. hahahahahahahahahaa I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Andrew Waterloo:

People like to watch shows about bad people, and then get upset they finally do something that was bad and not cool
Avatar 10:16am Cecile:

the only anti-hero show I really liked was The Shield and that's because Michael Chiklis and CCH Pounder were so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am MD:

"done so"=Typo...sorry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Dominick:

Many 80's CD reissues were done from cutting master tapes. These tapes were made to compensate for the limitations of vinyl releases and to assure all cuts (many are made) of the record had the same processing. Usually some bass roll off, elliptical filter (look it up) an upper mid boost and some compression were done. Later reissues went back to the original master mix tapes. Unfortunately the sound of the cutting master is the sound people recall and when hearing the original mix they think the re-mastering engineer has tampered with the sound. It's also 20 years later and many original mix tapes have deteriorated to the point that they are no longer usable.
Avatar 10:17am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@Cecile - I actually lived in Sleepy Hollow for a few years, so I am curious to watch it. Something tells me none of it is actually shot there. And yeah, that Icabod Crane is a looker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Andrew Waterloo:

The only new show I'm waiting for is British Sherlock Holmes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- love HuskerDu & BobM. - & been a kick of that stuff lately
- & I think *maybe* (??) they aren't getting Remastered as they should because of the members' disagreements & - Big Legal Mess...

- The Beatles Remasters were pretty thorough, yeah - w/ 2009 technology, @ what point is a Remaster a Remix - ? There was much press about it - should they leave Lennon popping a 'P' or 'autotune it' (so to speak) out? Like restoring a painting (no, really!) - what to remove or paint in...I think they did a great job that should be an example of Proprietary Mastering
Avatar 10:18am Cecile:

I think it's shot in the Carolinas.
It's so nuts. But the lead actress is going to be a star, even if the show flops.
Avatar 10:21am Cecile:

Oh! And now I am totally into Torchwood.
And yeah, new Sherlock Holmes. Woo!
Some guy writer called himself a "Cumberbitch". I laughed so hard.
Avatar 10:21am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Forgot to tell you Trouble, I am going on bird walks again in Central Park for the fall migration. They happen on Tuesdays at noon. Can you teleport here? Saw a waxwing and a red breasted grosbeak (male) last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- may be a great show - be a hot Ichabod Crane?
- Where shall we gangly losers (well - I'm older & fatter now) go for archetypes?
...Like that America lady being 'Ugly Betty': That's *Hollywood* 'ugly'. You want halloween-bait ugly - work in a thrift store in these parts like I do...is all I'm saying...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 10:29am Chris from DC:

Cecile, I assume you mean the English Sherlock, which is great, and not the one with Lucy Liu?
  10:29am Adrian in London:

I read something online the other day that said a newspaper article, a propos Sleepy Hollow, had said: "The boy comes face-to-face with the headless horseman."!!
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

hahahahahah, thats' great.
Avatar 10:30am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

One of the things I don't like about a lot of these new shows is that all the main characters have become Jeff Speakman type slappy fighters.
