Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Nicolas and Ben from France!
I probably shouldn't mention this but, (does the comma come before or after the but?) I had a lot of micro-cassette issues on this show, hence, a lot of editing and enough-garble-that-it-bothers-me moments that it approached issuehood. Accepting the state of it, and not wanting to lose the interviews I had done, I decided to press on. I was hoping the evident sound-fatigue and flutterations weren't the fault of my (secret brand) micro-cassette recorder. They are discontinued now and are hard to find. I think it is the specific micro-cassette I was using. I have three of them and they are very old. They've worked in Paris, LA, Milwaukee, New York, Dubuque ... and I still use them. Sentimental, I suppose. I have taped-over so many interviews and moments, all on these three little crappy tapes. Sadly the specific one I employed for this Dusty may have finally acquired some final internal failures in there in the gears and pinions. Two mostly-functional left, though. That's good news. I could buy new micro-cassette tapes, but I'll bet the quality has gone further out the window, and the treble response of the new ones is worse than ever. In truth it's the treble response of my old ears which has worsened, from listening to all these hiss-riddled endeavors.

Often, about this point in a show, the production gimmicks lessen and the interviews stretch-out. It's usually because I've run out of time and I have to finish the last twenty minutes of an episode in like, an hour. It's always frustrating, as I enjoy editing the heck out of things.

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. I hope you found it worthwhile. Of course, gun violence is a heavy topic and, if ever I seemed flippant or insensitive in my words or in the music, it was not intended. We're working our way through lots of issues right now, but we'll see it through.

Enjoyed getting out and interviewing people this past week. It had been a while. I was a little rusty. A little ... Dusty.

Starting to assemble CC5 and other good things for marathon. Should be fun.

Well, that's it. These playlists take a long time to do. Time to go play old Applejack. Night. Always remember. dusty@wfmu.org

Hi kat!
Avatar 6:04pm sFrances from VA:

Hey all! I will say that my only experience with guns was being held up at gunpoint while managing a Waldenbooks of all things! It gave me the vapors.
Avatar 6:04pm kat330:

We're postponing dinner tonight just to have full attention at keyboards and at the Squeezebox.
Avatar 6:04pm Philo Gristle:

Greets, Clay!
Avatar 6:04pm Cecile:

this is great.
Isley Brothers did a nutso cover of this - a medley with "Ohio"!

Sfrances, that's horrible!
Avatar 6:05pm Clay Pigeon:

Watch those vapors, Frances!
  6:05pm Night Al:

Ban all guns and all weapons of war. Peace and love.
  6:05pm Fredericks:

The vapors were a type of hysteria that women were said to experience. The symptoms of the vapors included anxiety, bloating...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

A blues song "Machine Gun" .. that's actually about a gun! Who knew? :)

Hi Clay and Pidgers!
Avatar 6:05pm Clay Pigeon:

Hi Philo!
Avatar 6:05pm kat330:

@Frances: Oooh, yikes. I've been very lucky that the only guns I've been within a few feet of were my dad's, out hunting or target shooting (which I did, too, but with an airgun).
Avatar 6:06pm Pine:

yo yo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

@Fredericks: "Hysteria" comes from the Greek for "womb", because that's where hysteria comes from. Except when it's from the Moon, "lunacy".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

Bonsoir mes amis.
Avatar 6:07pm Clay Pigeon:

Saturnine. What's that mean, Fredericks?
Avatar 6:07pm Philo Gristle:

Wasn't heroin what Bayer invented as a medication for "hysteria?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Matt from Springfield:

@Frances: Wow! Was that in VA or somewhere else? That actually makes TWO Virginians I know who were held at gunpoint in their retail job. During the 80s for you?
Avatar 6:08pm sFrances from VA:

the upside is I learned how calm I can be in a sketchy situation.
I'd love to try target practice sometime, but I feel better sticking with darts. ;) I'm totally fine with people hunting for food. But no one needs machine guns/assault rifles, and most people overlook the suicide factor when discussing handgun violence (I lost a friend that way)
Avatar 6:09pm Pine:

Love that creepy movie "Through a Glass Darkly".
Avatar 6:09pm sFrances from VA:

Enough! Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like such a bummer! Raising my pint of Arrogant Bastard Ale, cheers!!
Avatar 6:09pm kat330:

@Matt: there's a 2011 film with that title I really want to see. Involves the introduction of the vibrator.
Avatar 6:10pm sFrances from VA:

@Matt: It was on Lakeshore Ave in Oakland,CA /the 90s.
Avatar 6:10pm Philo Gristle:

I always liked the Abbie Hoffman suggestion that you have to eat what you kill. No wars. But can't complain about hunting long as I eat burgers.

@kat: "Machine Gun" you mean?
@Frances: Ah, Oakland. The guy I knew worked at the ABC (liquor) store that used to be in Brookfield Plaza, downtown Springfield around '88. I would believe that now, but he said there was virtually no crime there at the time!

There's too many insane and angry people to allow them to carry guns.
Avatar 6:14pm the glowing one:

it's so crazy to hear that people's answer to violence is more violence
Avatar 6:14pm sFrances from VA:

@Kat & Cecile: I know Panzy has her WFMU fans. ;)
@Matt: Yeah, Brookfield used to be just fine in the 80s, early 80/81 that's where I'd catch the bus to the Metro/Pentagon to get in to DC for punk shows. You're right, it is sketchy now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Slaphappy sound FX tonight, Clay!

Avatar 6:14pm Timbrocks:

@kat That's supposed to be a Florida Gator but it looks more like a frog. Gift from a friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think American's biggest gun problem is that the general approach to violence is to be the one who is better at violence.
Avatar 6:15pm Cecile:

gotta go.
Avatar 6:15pm kat330:

@Matt: Heh! That would be an interesting circuit getting from machine guns to vibrators! :) No, "Hysteria," with Gyllenhaal, Rupert Everett -- supposedly just a RomCom, but sounds "hysterical." :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Matt from Springfield:

There you go announcer: apostle of nonviolence violently shot to death...
Avatar 6:16pm Timbrocks:

Gun control is misguided. The real problems that need to be addressed are big pharma, mental health and the drug war. Address those problems and watch gun violence pretty much end in this country.
  6:16pm Night Al:

When you're in the military, you have to turn your gun in to the base armory at the end of the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Obama swore in this time on Abraham's Bible, on top of Martin's! 2 outta 3 ain't bad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

For this song, and a few others, I enjoy saying "This is a nice song, but I prefer the original by Leonard Nimoy better." ;D
Avatar 6:18pm dale:

i don't downhill. i know i'd die.
Avatar 6:18pm Clay Pigeon:

Mattel. Nimoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@Timb: Mental health is the BIG ONE. There's shocking zero infrastructure for helping the mentally disturbed.
Avatar 6:19pm kat330:

As per usual, Jon Stewart's and Stephen Colbert's segments on gun legislation get right to the heart of the matter by seeing the absurdism of POVs. Great and incisive perspectives (that I'll be sorry to lose when our Hulu runs out soon).
  6:19pm moose:

most of the same people against gun control seem to be also against spending any money on social services
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Andrew Waterloo:

But, not everybody shooting or getting shot is mentally ill. Much of the gun problem is a lack of safety and accountability. It says a lot that 5 people were shot going to gun events on gun appreciation day.
Avatar 6:21pm Timbrocks:

I'd prefer that Obama swear on the Constitution if anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@Frances 6:14: But it also has fantastic ethnic eateries of every stripe nowadays - especially Thai! Just don't hang around there after the stores close..
Avatar 6:21pm sFrances from VA:

There's no reason why we can't have gun regulation *and* address mental health issues more vigorously as well as the drug war & big pharma....but one thing that would've really helped mental health issues is universal health care/single payer affordable options.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Andrew Waterloo:

As someone who has been around rifles all I can say that it is absolutely stupid and negligent to hand someone a loaded weapon. Most gun deaths are stupid accidents that wouldn't have happened with the faintest amount of responsibility.
Avatar 6:22pm kat330:

The domestic harm or death through gun violence is something concerning me the most. Much goes unreported or logged in as "accidents."
  6:22pm Night Al:

Screw hunters! The only citizens that should be allowed to carry guns are trained law enforcement.
Avatar 6:22pm Timbrocks:

I'm generally a very liberal-minded person, but on this issue, I'm very pro-gun. The attention put on gun control is very misguided.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Matt from Springfield:

@Timb: All POTUSs swear "to protect and defend the Constitution" though. Course not all of them *lived up to* that.
Avatar 6:23pm Timbrocks:

@Night Al you'd prefer that only the government have guns? That should be everyone's worst nightmare.
  6:23pm Fredericks:

Saturnine? + Sad , gloomy.

@Matt: Yes!
Avatar 6:23pm Pine:

I'm with Jesse Ventura on this one
Avatar 6:24pm Timbrocks:

They swear to but I doubt that most of them have even read the Constitution, much less defend it.
Avatar 6:24pm Clay Pigeon:

I hear a ground issue. Cats been in the wires again.
  6:24pm Night Al:

The American masses are moronic asses. They should not be allowed to own weapons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: Then again, that's why we have the "Darwin Awards"! Many have done just that. Sadly one of those idiots killed his 7 year old son instead, while stepping into his pickup carrying a loaded gun...
Avatar 6:25pm Timbrocks:

@Clay sounds OK on this end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

I'm "Mattel ThunderBURP"! :)
  6:25pm moose:

if I choose not to have a gun and only the goverment has guns and for some reason they decide to go around shooting up the citizenry do I deserve to die?
Avatar 6:26pm dale:

we don't need a well regulated militia - we have a massive taxpayer funded army. and navy. and air force. and marine corps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Matt the statistics are overwhelming
  6:26pm ?:

Love the Lennon track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Matt from Springfield:

YES YES YES!!!! "Nobody Told Me"! Excellent posthumous release from John L.
And, one of the few chord riffs I can play straight through (I play single notes on guitar, but my fingers find chords difficult).
  6:26pm Night Al:

@Night Al you'd prefer that only the government have guns? You better believe it! The only citizens that should be allowed to carry guns are trained law enforcement. If the government wants to kill you, your personal weaponry isn't going to stop them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@Night Al: "The American masses are moronic asses" -- GNFA Punk Album, if it isn't one already!
Avatar 6:27pm kat330:

@Timbrocks: Right to bear arms had a totally different context when that was written. The Constitution is a living document that changes as circumstances change through the years. The Founding Fathers would be so dismayed the way their careful work is being so misused today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think you should be able to buy a gun. But, I like what we have in Canada. You have to get a fire arms safety certificate before you can take ownership of one. If you want a machine-gun fine, as long as you have some impressive paperwork that backs you up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Carmichael:

I have to disagree with you, Timbrocks. I have no problem with individual gun ownership (via registration and background check), but there are too many people people storing massive amounts of weapons and ammo, starting up militias, and basically stockpiling either because they "can" or because they're fearful of an apocalypse event. There are too many of those people, and they seem to be increasing.
Avatar 6:28pm sFrances from VA:

@NightAl @6:26, so true. In general, I think you're right on.
  6:28pm ?:

Harry Nilsson became a fervent gun control advocate after John was shot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: I like that too! You have to take the training, and the Mounties gotta check you off!
  6:28pm Night Al:

Do you really believe that if the govenment of America wants to sudue it's citizens that a group of armed civilians is going to ban together and battle them? Your dilusional.
  6:29pm moose:

of course if all gun owners were members of a 'well regulated (i assume by the government?) militia' i guess that's ok
Avatar 6:29pm sFrances from VA:

@Andrew, it seems that statistically speaking: Canada has, per capita even more guns than the US yet nowhere near the murder/fatality ratio. So it seems like y'all's method of regulating is working.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Matt from Springfield:

This is a great, lively episode! Unfortunately I have to cut it off halfway--need to make my "Plan 9" showtime! I watched it again on my computer to "study" it alone, now I'll watch it with all the riffin' :)

Have a great night, everyone! Always Remember...to listen to Archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Andrew Waterloo:

I don't understand why well regulated doesn't include regulating who is a member, and what guns they use.
Avatar 6:30pm sFrances from VA:

Have a great night, Matt!
Avatar 6:31pm Timbrocks:

@kat330 certianly, and you'll get no argument from me that the Constitution needs to be amended from time to time, but until you amend it, you need to uphold it. The 13th amendment outlawed slavery, for example. Don't be so willing to give all of your rights away to the government.
Avatar 6:31pm kat330:

Bye, Matt! Enjoy! :)
Avatar 6:31pm Clay Pigeon:

Take it easy, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Andrew Waterloo:

The biggest issue is clip size. That was the biggest failing of the last assault rifle ban.

Avatar 6:33pm sFrances from VA:

Avatar 6:33pm sFrances from VA:

@Andrew: have a good 'un!
Avatar 6:34pm Philo Gristle:

Later, Andrew!
  6:34pm ?:

Most folk are loose cannon fodder hence the need for regulation. Homicide is the end of many means. Guns make it easier.
Avatar 6:34pm kat330:

@Timbrocks: But Obama's only asking common sense regulations. WHY do you think individuals need automatic weapons? There's no need to amend the Constitution for regulating multi-rounds of ammunition and killing machines? Why are you opposed to these sensible changes and, more importantly, why do you think doing so goes against what the Founding Fathers intended by "The Right to Bear Arms"?
  6:34pm Fredericks:

@Dale: You left out the National Guard.

Will Clay play Coop's "Pass the Gun Around"? Maybe.
Avatar 6:41pm dale:

their big thing is rescuing manhattan pigeons who are injured. probably spent 80-100 grand on a building with water, power, heat (all without permits), huge enclosure made out of telephone poles enclosed in netting etc for 20 pigeons. then they shoot owls and hawks and foxes who coma around to eat the trapped pigeons. i made some decent money off all the work so i can't really complain
Avatar 6:41pm glenn:

sorry guys, does anybody honestly believe that the gun they carry will protect them from the government?
Avatar 6:42pm Clay Pigeon:

Yo Glenn!
Avatar 6:43pm Philo Gristle:

I was mugged once, at age 8. The two gypsy thugs on bicycles must've been 12. They stole my salty licorice candy and took a bite off my pear popsicle before giving it back. I threw it to the ground. Soon after they had left. Boy was I mad. True story!
Avatar 6:43pm kat330:

I have a tragic backstory involving an 8-yr. old boy on our street when I was even younger. He and a friend found his father's gun and, then he was dead. It's the irresponsible gun owners. I mean, if we already know how irresponsible people are in being parents (or wearing condoms to start with), what makes them suddenly geniuses and responsible citizens when it comes to gun ownership?
Avatar 6:44pm glenn:

hi clay. how's things?
Avatar 6:44pm northguineahills:

I got held up w/ a gun to my head in Fort Greene in 2003. Caught him later that night, and I had to testify to the grand jury. He got 8 years and is now on probation.

Avatar 6:47pm glenn:

i came very close to shooting my brother in the head when i was about 8. another case of "whoops, we didn't think it was loaded".
Avatar 6:47pm Philo Gristle:

Given that you need to pass a test or few to get a drivers license, I don't see a problem having a similar set to get a gun.
Avatar 6:48pm glenn:

hm. 8 seems to be a bad age.
Avatar 6:48pm Philo Gristle:

@Fredericks My left pinky is registered as a lethal weapon.
Avatar 6:49pm sFrances from VA:

So that's 3 of us so far that've been the victim of gun violence + 1 close to a gun fatality (2 if you want to count my friend's suicide by gun).

I'm going to guess these were all handguns too, not assault rifles....

  6:49pm Fredericks:

Oh, my!
Avatar 6:50pm dale:

i've cut meat consumption down to one or two servings of fish per week. then i watch nature on pbs and see their survival instincts and feel like crap eating a piece of salmon
Avatar 6:50pm Timbrocks:

Anyone who owns a gun and doesn't keep it in a gun safe is a fool. If they have kids, especially so. That's sad of course but it's moronic. No one should EVER be that irresponsible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Carmichael:

I have a registered handgun in my bedroom somewhere, for those late-night unwanted visitors. That's where it stays, and my children don't even know I have it. Why can't other people just settle for the same?
Avatar 6:50pm Timbrocks:

Alright, Clay. "Love Gun" is about Gene Simmons' penis. It's not about a real gun.
Avatar 6:50pm Philo Gristle:

My brother shot me in the face with an air rifle. Luckily it had been loaded with a q-tip. I still yelled at him.
Avatar 6:51pm kat330:

And I have a half-brother who actually is a vendor at gun shows, so he has an economic investment in the matter. Whatever "pry it from my cold dead fingers!" argument can be made, it still is perfectly sane and reasonable to outright ban automatic assault weapons and volume ammunition, as well as background checks as restrictive as getting driver's licenses and beyond.
Avatar 6:52pm dale:

wife's sister and bro in law keep loaded handguns on the nightstands. when she stayed with then she thought the alarm would go off and she'd try to shut it off and blow her brains out by accident
Avatar 6:52pm Timbrocks:

@kat a real gun owner should take a class that teaches responsible gun ownership. if they take a carry and conceal, they would be required to attend a class like that. i'm all for everyone being required to take such a course if they want to apply for gun ownership.
Avatar 6:52pm glenn:

in my case it was my mom's .22.
  6:52pm Night Al:

We need to be striving to become a green energy using, non-warring, kind, sympathetic race of beings. Or I'm getting a gun and kill everyone of you motherfuckers!
Avatar 6:53pm kat330:

I didn't mean BAN background checks, obviously -- I need to get dinner going though since apparently my mind is weakening from the hunger vapors. :)

Great show, Clay! I'll catch up on all I miss later on. Bye and sweet dreams, all!
Avatar 6:53pm Clay Pigeon:

Have enjoyed your comments. Have to get ready for Night People. Thanks for listening everybody. Appreciate it. Stay safe and ... always remember.

@Clay: Good point about there being a Sickness in this country
  6:53pm Fredericks:

Timbrocks: Controlling fools would be far more expensive than controlling guns.
Avatar 6:54pm glenn:

keep your stick on the ice, clay.
Avatar 6:54pm sFrances from VA:

THanks for a great show, Clay!!!! Have a great weekend y'all ! Be safe & responsible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Carmichael:

With the gun lobby, the argument seems to be all or nothing. No registration, no limit on rounds or numbers of weapons, no background checks at gun shows. They seem to see that as the 1st sign of an imminent government takeover. I just don't get the lack of reasonable discussion.
Avatar 6:55pm Philo Gristle:

I miss hockey. I've missed it since 1986 or so. Great show, Clay! Thanks to all partici-pants, too!

Avatar 6:56pm Timbrocks:

@Fredericls if expense is your primary concern, you've got the wrong idea.

Avatar 6:56pm glenn:

it's the only argument they have, carmichael.
Avatar 6:56pm Timbrocks:

Great show Clay! Thank you!
Avatar 6:56pm Philo Gristle:

@Carm with you on last two comments.
  6:57pm drewo:

Handguns are far and away the weapon of choice used in most homicides. But you don't hear much talk about that. Can't help but think of political grandstanding. Also interestingly enough, 55% of gun murders are suicide.

I heard this on a recent Talk Of The Nation radio show.
Avatar 6:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks Clay!
Avatar 6:58pm Timbrocks:

@Carm with you on that. It should never be all or nothing. People definitely treat it that way. We do need stronger background checks. Gun shows are a free for all, at least down here. That's just as scary as anything.
Avatar 6:58pm glenn:

no, 55% of gun DEATHS are suicide.
Avatar 6:59pm Philo Gristle:
