A New Frontier for Travel Scammers: A.I.-Generated Guidebooks (by Seth Kugel and Stephen Hiltner for NYT, Aug 5, 2023): “A recent Amazon search for the phrase ‘Paris Travel Guide 2023,’ for example, yielded dozens of guides with that exact title. One, whose author is listed as Stuart Hartley, boasts, ungrammatically, that it is ‘Everything you Need to Know Before Plan a Trip to Paris.’ The book itself has no further information about the author or publisher. It also has no photographs or maps, though many of its competitors have art and photography easily traceable to stock-photo sites. More than 10 other guidebooks attributed to Stuart Hartley have appeared on Amazon in recent months that rely on the same cookie-cutter design and use similar promotional language.”

• Zoom is listening in to your calls, to train its AI. Via Elizabeth Ayer:

Eight Months Pregnant and Arrested After False Facial Recognition Match (NYT, Aug 6, 2023): "Ms. Woodruff is the sixth person to report being falsely accused of a crime as a result of facial recognition technology used by police to match an unknown offender’s face to a photo in a database. All six people have been Black; Ms. Woodruff is the first woman to report it happening to her."

You can say no to a TSA face scan. But even a senator had trouble. (by Shira Ovide in Washington Post, July 11, 2023):
The TSA declined to publicly disclose its analysis or how the accuracy compares with those of human TSA agents.

Even small error rates could affect many people. If the TSA software verified IDs for the nearly 2.3 million people it is screening on average each day, a 3 percent error rate translates into more than 68,000 people a day.

If you believe the facial recognition machines messed up your ID check, you can request a TSA agent to do the verification, the agency said.

Thank you Mark (and the listeners asking such insightful questions). Just to add one thought: a concept that is NEVER discussed when the perennial topic of what good tech, innovation, and policy comes from war is to seriously consider the innovations that would have occurred (that we will never know)
had the tremendous human and fiscal expense had not gone down the drain (and into the pockets of warnographers and other profiteers during wars.

Thanks for your response. To expand on my comment, I meant the human suffering caused by the violence of war, can not be offset by the benefits of technological advances developed during that war. War is bad. Tech advances are good. But war is more bad.
The ideal would be to preserve human capital by not sending men to kill each other, and apply that capital to improving the world, peacefully.
