@Scott I think Todd disputes that. He recorded a lot of other records there around the same time, and they don't sound thin, or incorrectly recorded. I think the XTC record in its original form sounds great. I think, when asked about it, Todd has just shrugged. If that's the sound of incorrect wiring, it was arguably a happy accident.

I saw some guy playing period instruments on TV or the internet, and he insisted on using catgut strings for his banjo as that is what they used in the 18th century. I guess its a variant on classical (now nylon strings) vs steel string guitar?

steel strings sound notably different though. i think there's a place for all of them; but there's a lot of wastefulness, which causes more wastefulness as nylon strings are manufactured, when gut strings will be excellent.
